[Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use
If I understood this right,The proposed solution is,Just drop empty files from various apps in the templates folder? Dropping the empty files in templates folder , just to add them to the list is *blatant abuse* of Templates . *Templates are supposed to be user or company specific* , something that already has a format, and just needs an edit to be finished. Upstream has been right to reject this and not to populate the create document option. *Templates are not empty files* and *this is a wrong approach* . If this option is confusing or difficult to use, its better if this item 'Create Documents' is removed! As already pointed out, The *only* user-friendly solution is, if the a menu item actually points to the New of the app, ie: when the user selects , 'New document' , the app directly opens with an empty file. The Windows way of creating new documents is not user-friendly: 1: User *has to rename a file* 2: User has to open the file after the initial select of Create Document. No-one actually simply creates an empty files, users want to work on the new Documents. I'd say rather than taking shortcuts and dropping files into templates , we could implement a feature which is actually user friendly. -- Create Document Templates difficult to use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 399320] [NEW] [karmic] PTP devices not auto-unmounting on USB disconnect
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gvfs I have an iPhone 3G which I connect via USB to charge: Bus 001 Device 009: ID 05ac:1292 Apple, Inc. iPhone 3G The device presents a PTP interface, so each time I connect it I get prompted to open F-Spot with buttons for OK, Cancel and Unmount. If I choose Cancel the device is mounted with the name iPhone, which is presumably correct behaviour, but when I disconnect the USB cable an entry remains in the Places menu (although underneath the Network entry, not underneath the Computer entry where the iPhone entry is created) named: Digital Camera (usb:000,007) This happens each time I disconnect the device, so over the course of a day I build up quite a few bogus entries. Presumably the gvfs mount should be completely removed on USB disconnect? [Bug 395673] Re: Opening the trash folder makes nautilus crash
Same here; attaching a .crash file. I've emptied the trash, put one zero-length file into it and tried to open trash in Nautilus, which unceremoniously crashes. Same thing happens whether I open the trash from the desktop or from Nautilus. If I open the *empty* trashcan and only then put the null file into the trash, though, everything seems fine. I can see the file and even open a second or third Nautilus on the trash folder until *all of them* are closed again. Thereafter, opening trash once again crashes Nautilus. ** Attachment added: generated crash file http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29010947/_usr_bin_nautilus.1000.crash -- Opening the trash folder makes nautilus crash https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395673 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is a bug assignee. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. The issue that you reported is one that should be reproducible with the live environment of the Desktop CD of the development release - Karmic Koala. It would help us greatly if you could test with it so we can work on getting it fixed in the next release of Ubuntu. You can find out more about the development release at http://www.ubuntu.com/testing/. [Bug 396197] Re: totem crashes when i open a video file
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash- file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. Thanks in advance for your cooperation and understanding. ** Changed in: totem (Ubuntu) Status: New = Invalid -- totem crashes when i open a video file https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/396197 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to totem in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 395692] Re: Drag-and-Drop behavior in the menu editor is inconsistent and confusing
@Richard: I like the immediate feedback that your patch adds to the menu editor. It's a definite improvement, but It doesn't really solve the problem of where the items get placed once you drop them. If you open the Menu Editor and drag an item up or down, you'll notice a black line that appears when you hover between any two items. The placement of the line implies that when you drop the item, it will be placed in between those other two items, but if you're dragging downward the item directly below gets pushed up and the item you were dragging is placed below the line. When you drag an item down, the item should be placed above the black line, not below it. Dragging an item up behaves as expected, though. I'm attaching an image that demonstrates what I'm talking about just to clear up any confusion. ** Attachment added: alacarte_bug.png http://launchpadlibrarian.net/29011836/alacarte_bug.png -- Drag-and-Drop behavior in the menu editor is inconsistent and confusing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/395692 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to alacarte in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

I agree that hiding the command is better than the current experience. However, I disagree that there is any kind of abuse in dropping in empty documents. [Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use
After looking at the current behaviour of the Create Document command I tend to agree with mac_v, in that users want to work with new documents, not just create them and leave them sitting there. Couldn't we change the way the command works so that it opens a new document within the associated app using the template selected i.e. the same thing that would happen if the user double clicked on the template file directly? That would make the command much more useful in general. I still think that the Templates folder should come pre-populated with some good basic templates - otherwise most users will never figure out what that folder is for in the first place (I didn't, and I've been using Ubuntu for years). If non-desktop users really have such a problem with that, then perhaps make it so that each user's Templates folder is only populated on the creation of a desktop user account? To be honest, I don't think that's really necessary though... how much room do a few basic templates take up really? -- Create Document Templates difficult to use https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/372132 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to nautilus in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

Re: [Bug 372132] Re: Create Document Templates difficult to use
mac_v didn't take care of one thing: when I'm browsing with nautilus, and I am in a directory, if I want to create a new document inside it, I will use the templates menu, and I will create the file INSIDE that folder. This is the real gain of templates.
