[Bug 439448] Re: visual corruption affecting several panel applets
Further to my earlier comment this issue has returned on occasion, so it isn't fixed for me, however, it is happening less, say once a week and only with the Date applet. @Teej I think all Alex was saying was that he has seen this bug on two others machines, one owned by his Dad and one owned by his Uncle. As Alex had already reported the issue, he thought there was no point his Dad and Uncle also reporting the same issue. I guess, however, that technically, he should sign them up for accounts so they can report the issue. Since a bug with one person reporting it might seem not that important, but with three people reporting it seems more important. [Bug 483989] Re: Importing from Samba share extremely slow: Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug
This bug affects me to. For me the behaviour is slightly different. I have my MP3 on a Samba share (a NSA210 Zyxel NAS box). It imports the files all successfully. On reboot, I find the library empty (despite the Samba folder being correctly mounted (tested by browsing to it)). On reloading Rhythmbox a few time, maybe by the third close / reload suddenly the library is full, though it will randomly re-build the library from scratch as if it was importing all the music again or it will just do a scan for new file. After this, generally, things work ok, apart from the timeline not progressing, but that's another issue. However, if I try and play large MP3 files (we are talking plus 100MB here (continuous DJ mixes)) I get a message shortly after playback starts saying Internal GStreamer problem; file a bug. Which is exactly what I am doing. Ironically, for these files that give the message, the Timeline progresses as it should!! Playback works normally with no errors, apart from this message. It also seems that it can't save any Tag changes to these files, I think that is what causes the error to pop up - it is trying to save a Tag. Bizarrely, this happens the first time I play a file, but not if I try to play that file again. This might be related to this bug: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/rhythmbox/+bug/292409 but I can't update my NAS's firmware. [Bug 592646] [NEW] remote desktop does not work because of keyring popup
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: gnome-keyring After the upgrade of a few days ago in Ubuntu 10.04 (I think it is was two days ago) I cannot login my Ubuntu machine anymore with VNCVIEWER because on the screen of the machine I wish to login remote with, the gnome keyring pops up and VNC seems to cause that. I have never had that problem and the passwors is supplied with the remote desktop login and always has brought me straight to the remote desktop screen. I have read that disabling auto login is an option, however not for me as it is a media PC and has no keyboard / mouse attached most of the time. So what happens; 1) I turn on the Media PC (it auto logs in) 2) I want to access it with vncviewer from my laptop 3) On the media PC the gnome keyring annoyance (sorry but I never liked it) pops up 4) I can't log in as the remote desktop component seems to wait until authentication is given 5) When I click away the gnome keyring manager or cancel it or kill it by ssh I can log in (no password entered) So the annoyance is that I do not have a password stored in the gnome keyring manager, it does not need a password (since cancelling also works) and yet the window pops up. I have removed the gnome keyring stuff from the startup applications it was not even present before this happened so some upgrade caused the gnome keyring manager to be active again without my consent. I also noticed when checking if remote desktop still had a valid password stored, it also presented me with the gnome keyring for no reason. After cancelling I could view and edit the properties. So it seems that on my machine without a stored keyring password probably every action will present me that annoying popup. How can I disable this gnome keyring forever? Note that if you wish this patch to be applied to the stable 2.30.x series, you'd have to update the translations too by running: sed -i -e s/_Configuration:/Confi_guration/g *.po from the po/ dir of the source tree, and add the changes to the patch too. [Bug 592671] [NEW] application cache update
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: desktop-file-utils Related packages: gnome-panel 1:2.30.0-0ubuntu2, python-gmenu 2.30.0-0ubuntu4, xdg-utils 1.0.2-6.1ubuntu3 The /usr/share/applications/desktop.*.cache file is not updated when an (attached example) entry is added by xdg-desktop-menu or desktop-file- install. Gnome-panel detects creation of a new desktop file in /usr/share/applications and displays it in the menu immediately, but on its next start (e.g. after logout/login) the old menu without new entry is displayed because of the cache. This is not a problem for native deb packages, for which dpkg triggers the python-gmenu postinst script responsible for updating the cache. This is only a problem for ISVs, that install their (LSB) packages themselves. This bug will force them to delete all such cache files. Is this deletion acceptable? Another possible solution would be to update the cache in update- desktop-database command. I haven't found such cache on Debian testing nor Fedora 13, so I think this is Ubuntu's invention, thus reporting it here. [Bug 592381] Re: Epiphany Crash While Loading a Webpage
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. However, your crash report is either missing or challenging to deal with as a .crash file. Please follow these instructions to have apport report a new bug about your crash that can be dealt with by the automatic retracer. If you are running the Ubuntu Stable Release you might need to enable apport in /etc/default/apport and restart. If you are using Ubuntu with the Gnome desktop environment - launch nautilus and navigate to your /var/crash directory and double click on the crash report you wish to submit. If you are using Kubuntu or Xubuntu you can file the crash using /usr/share/apport/apport-qt --crash-file=/var/crash/_my_crash_report.crash in a terminal - where _my_crash_report.crash is the crash you would like to report. I'm closing this bug report since the process outlined above will automatically open a new bug report which can then dealt with more efficiently. [Bug 592692] [NEW] 'dual' view mode produces inaesthetic space between pages
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: evince The dual view mode is, presumably, meant to emulate the layout of a physical book. The current approximation -- placing separate pages side-by-side -- could be done better, by placing them touching each other, with a simple one-pixel line between them. It may seem pedantic, but this current separation destroys the design of facing pages. For example, the http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Canons_of_page_construction are based on the assumption that the two facing pages are touching. This is not to mention such things as carefully-designed two-page spreads -- in this case Evince effectively chops someone's artwork in half. ** Affects: evince (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New -- 'dual' view mode produces inaesthetic space between pages https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/592692 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to evince in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 545397] Re: gnome-screensaver-gl-helper crashed with SIGSEGV in exit()
I have encountered a crash with symptoms matching this one, while running from the 10.04 32-bit live CD. After starting the live CD, a message displayed suggesting I could install the proprietary nvidia drivers, which I agreed to, selecting the recommended (latest) version - but when it asked me to reboot I realised that while using a live-cd (presumably without persistent storage) rebooting would not in fact cause those drivers to be loaded. Instead, I left the computer running without having rebooted. I left the computer running in this state; when I returned to it later, apport informed me of a crash. I submitted the report and thought no more about it. Later, I left the computer again, and returned to find the same error message displayed. I have attached the apport report. The computer I was doing this on was an NEC WA2510 with specification including 2 AMD Opteron 2218 2.6GHz processors and an nVidia Quadro FX 560 video card running two CRT monitors. ** Attachment added: Crash report log file http://launchpadlibrarian.net/50139901/_usr_lib_gnome-screensaver_gnome-screensaver-gl-helper.999.crash -- gnome-screensaver-gl-helper crashed with SIGSEGV in exit() https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/545397 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-screensaver in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 592748] [NEW] problematic default file/directory permissions when VFAT drive connected
Public bug reported: Binary package hint: nautilus The proper behavior I EXPECT: When I hook up an external hard drive (or USB flash drive) with one big VFAT partition (a VERY common thing), I want to see all directories/folders having these default permissions: drwxr-xr-x ...and all files to have these default permissions: -rw-r--r-- Why do I need this? Because all my folders and files under my home directory get those permissions by default whenever I create them. And I want to be able to sync/back up data to and from my VFAT drives, using file syncing tools like grsync, rsync, unison, conduit, etc. But ALL those file sync tools fail miserably when the folder and file permissions are not the same! Furthermore, it's annoying that whenever I copy files from the VFAT drive to my home directory, then I have to manually adjust the folder/file permissions as above, so that the newly-copied files have permissions similar to all the other folders/files in my home directory. I don't want to have to do this step, as I don't think it's necessary. It is NEVER the case that the wonky permissions above are useful or appropriate or helpful, in the real-world way that I use Ubuntu. Also, novice Ubuntu users should not have to know about permissions (let alone have to manually adjust them), this is a big turn-off for them! It's a big stumbling block when newbies run into this. You don't have to mess around with permissions this way in Windows! The buggy behavior I GET: When I hook up an external hard drive (or USB flash drive) with one big VFAT partition (a VERY common thing), I see folders having these permissions: drwx-- ...and all files having these permissions: -rwxr-xr-x There *used to be* a workaround to this, back when gnome-mount was used: 1. Within gconf-editor, edit /system/storage/default_options/vfat (Note: this no longer exists!) 2. Delete the umask key, then add these 2 keys as follows: dmask=022 fmask=133 ...but as of Ubuntu 9.10, you can't use this workaround anymore. Help! Aargh! I patiently tried to get this issue addressed in bug 178154 (https://bugs.launchpad.net/gnome-mount/+bug/178154), but the bug got closed on me with no fix because gnome-mount is no longer in use. Final note: It's possible some subsystem of nautilus is to blame for this (But which one? I don't know, please adjust relevant package accordingly if you do, and please don't just mark this as wont-fix like bug 178154).
