Perhaps the group description string should just be changed... easy fix.
How about "Lock audio devices" or "Exclusively use audio devices"?
Doesn't completely clear up the problem, but it sounds scarier than "Use

A rename is a good compromise. I think a good name could mitigate your
concerns in comment 53, Igor.

About "Use audio devices while logged out", that's not really accurate
because you still have to be logged in to use it, just not on the
current console.

When gvfs-gphoto2-volume-monitor is running, I have the familiar last

If I can provide more information, I'd love to.

2010-03-16 Thread David Tombs
Hi naomi,

I'm sorry to hear you're leaving. If you want to give it another try the
cleanest workaround I've found is to do the following:

1) Open a terminal
2) cd /usr/share/gvfs/remote-volume-monitors/
3) sudo mv gphoto2.monitor ghoto2.monitor.ren

I'm not sure if this will break anything else, but I've been using it on
my system for 6 months and all my USB devices are working fine.

Hope it helps,
David

[Bug 543886] [NEW] creating PGP key should warn about comment field

2010-03-21 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: seahorse

When creating a new PGP key with seahorse, it displays a tantalizing
"comment" field without warning newbies that this will become part of
their encryption string.

Steps:

1) Open seahorse
2) File -> New
3) Select "PGP Key"
4) Enter Name, email address, /and comment/
5) Finish rest of steps

What happens? I get a key string like "David Tombs (my stupid comment)
", where everyone will see my stupid comment.

What should happen: Seahorse should tactfully warn the user like GPG
does:

You need a user ID to identify your key; the software constructs the user ID
from the Real Name, Comment and Email Address in this form:
"Heinrich Heine (Der Dichter) "

[Bug 481197] Re: unable to mount location - failed to retrieve share list from server

2010-03-23 Thread David Tombs
I can also reproduce this with nautilus 1:2.28.1-0ubuntu3 on Karmic 64.
Accessing other (Ubuntu) computers on my network works fine, but trying
to access one specific one gives this error.

I don't have very good reproduction steps right now, but I think it
might have to do with me rebooting the machine I'm trying to connect to.
Possible nautilus is using an old address or something? Not sure about
this.

Either way, smb://HERON/ gives the error, while smb://192.168.1.112/
connects as it should. wbinfo -N=HERON gives the correct IP,
192.168.1.112.

I have been able to connect to HERON before, it's just not working this
morning.

[Bug 475845] Re: delay on printing dialog in evince

2010-01-11 Thread David Tombs
Notice that I have a Canon PIXMA MP160, not an HP printer.

Also, I find that the dialog will freeze at different states of
completion, not just with the specific tabs that Wojtek mentioned above.
For example, sometimes none of the dialog painted, it was just a gray
rectangle.

[Bug 484399] Re: when i close the lid on my laptop the system does not go to sleep.

2010-01-14 Thread David Tombs
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 484399

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

[Bug 434251] Re: karmic: battery left time estimation is wrong and randomly changing

2010-01-14 Thread David Tombs
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Please execute the following command, as it will
automatically gather debugging information, in a terminal:

apport-collect 434251

This will help us to find and resolve the problem. Bear in mind that you
may need to install the python-launchpadlib package from the universe
repository. Additionally, when prompted to give apport-collect
permissions for Launchpad you will need to give it at least the ability
to "Change Non-Private" data as it will be adding information to your
bug report. Thanks in advance!

When reporting bugs in the future please use apport, either via the
appropriate application's "Help -> Report a Problem" menu or using
'ubuntu-bug' and the name of the package affected. You can learn more
about this functionality at https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs.

** Description changed:

  Binary package hint: devicekit

Worked fine in 9.04 & previous.

Brightness keys only have failed; all other fn keys still function as
  intended.

Brightness gnome-panel applet works, but occasionally reports it can't
recover data when it can. (not seen since Karmic-RC)

Via KeyboardShortcuts debug process there is no determinable response
from the brightness keys at all. All other fn keys give expected output.

[Bug 406515] Re: [Karmic] Brightness fn keys lost functionality (Lenovo laptops)

2010-01-19 Thread David Tombs
Hi spaetz, sorry about the "hijacking," but I have been trying to take
action on this apparently-stalled bug and just realized that it had
actually originally been hijacked from being a Lenovo-specific bug. It's
quite possible your bug and this one are related, but until that can be
confirmed it's much more useful to developers to have different bug
reports. (And the vague title was bringing in people who I'm sure don't
have the same exact issue.)

Sorry for the inconvenience, but I think it's worth it!

[Bug 510849] [NEW] clicking sound while playing audio CD

2010-01-21 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

When playing a particular audio CD, Resistance by Muse, I get clicking
sounds on certain tracks in Rhythmbox. The sounds are also recorded in
wav and ogg rips by sound juicer, but don't show up playing the CD in
VLC or ripping with cdparanoia. Thus, it seems to be gstreamer-related.

Reproduction steps:
1) Insert audio CD
2) Start playing track 4 (only one example, some other tracks exhibit same
issue)
3) Skip to 2:53, play for a few seconds and you'll hear it.

Oddly, right now I can't reproduce the issue reliably though I was able
to a few minutes ago and throughout the past few weeks. I'll update with
more when I have it.

2010-01-21 Thread David Tombs
Thank you for bringing this bug to our attention. However, a paper cut
should be something the average user will encounter, and many users do
not use the auto-completion in the filechooser. (I didn't even know it
existed.) So this bug can't be addressed as part of this project.

For further information about papercuts criteria, please read
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut.

Don't worry though, this bug has been marked as "Invalid" only in the
papercuts project.

[Bug 388778] [NEW] gnome-appearance-properties theme switching behaves oddly

2009-06-17 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-control-center

Normally on my system, Appearance Properties theme switching works just
fine. However, for some reason (I don't remember why) I switched themes
using gtk-theme-switcher2. After I did that gnome-appearance-properties
will switch the theme, but the GTK elements are not switched, resulting
in an ugly, unexpected theme clash.

This seems to be because ~/.gtkrc-2.0 (set by gtk-theme-switcher2)
overrides what is set in gnome-appearance-properties. While this makes
sense, it results in weird behavior.

I assigned this to gnome-appearance-properties because I think it should
alert the user to the conflict and possibly present the option to remove
the gtkrc file.

[Bug 301749] Re: installed GTK themes are not completely deleted in gnome-appearance-properties

2009-06-17 Thread David Tombs
Per this appears
to be committed. The linked bug, on the other hand, does not really
match this issue.

When I get a chance, I'll try to patch and confirm fixed myself.
