[Bug 39640] Re: [2.0beta3] gaim: status pulldown menu is half empty (drawn offscreen)

2006-09-23 Thread Jeff Greene
This happened to me, but I was able to scroll down to see the rest of
the menu. Considering that I keep the buddy list stretched from the top
to the bottom of the screen, this can be a pain. I would rather have it
where the list just goes above the button if it needs to (or always). I
am guessing that most people have their buddy lists near the bottom and
so this feature will be rarely useful.

[Bug 45950] beagle integration with nautilus cannot be disabled by the user

2006-05-22 Thread Jeff Fortin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: libbeagle0

I am beagle enabled, and it took over nautilus (they are integrated together).
It's pretty cool, but now I have a question for you guys: would it be possible
to still
* have beagle
* have a beagle-capable nautilus
* but also have a gconf switch I can toggle to disable the beagle integration?

If I want to use beagle, I will use beagle. Otherwise, when I do ctrl-F
in nautilus, I WANT to use gnome-search-tool. Because it just has some
plain advantages over the beagle concept (like not needing any indexing
prior to searching).

[Bug 32823] Re: no dvd menu

2006-06-11 Thread Jeff Fortin
Sebastian, has this been committed yet? We're at gstreamer 0.10.6 now,
after the dapper release, and it still doesn't show menus or allow
moving through a movie's timeline. It works with totem-xine, but I find
it ugly to use totem-xine when everything else works with gstreamer. If
this is not into dapper yet, can I hope to see this as a special
package fix sometime since this is a LTS version? It would be a shame
having a 3 year supported desktop distro that cannot play DVDs with
gstreamer :)

[Bug 62633] Only First Hard Drive Accessible

2006-09-27 Thread Jeff Greene
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gparted

I am using the latest version of Edgy and GParted only detects my first hard
drive. It was detected in Dapper and using the livecd for GParted. The only
workaround that I know of is to manually run GParted with the hard drives
specified.
(For instance: gparted /dev/sda /dev/sdb)

I compiled the latest version of GParted and tried it again in Edgy, but
it still did not work.

I had reported this bug to GParted earlier, but found that it is a problem with

[Bug 65231] epiphany depends on firefox

[Bug 34510] Re: there should be no screensaver on the liveCD

2006-10-12 Thread Jeff Fortin
Wait, this is all wrong. Why is there any screensavers active at all on
the liveCD? I think it's not a matter of patching the installer; it's a
matter of simply configuring GNOME/KDE/XFCE on the liveCD to not run
screensavers at all (just blank the screen if you really want to save
screens).

Because even if you are not installing, you *DON'T* want a screensaver
starting on the livecd. Especially with hardware that does not have open
drivers (thinking of the nvidia people here as an example).

I have tested this, and it is true that you cannot insert pictures (or
other files) over certain protocols, such as Jabber or MSN. However, you
can insert pictures (and only pictures) directly into the conversation
in other protocols such as AIM. I think that for protocols that support
inserting, it should insert the file. If they only support sending, it
should start sending the file. Otherwise, this feature should be
disabled.

[Bug 66759] Gnome system tray icon broken

2006-10-18 Thread Jeff Tucker
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gaim

In Dapper, I used the gnome system tray icon. This worked as expected.
When I closed gaim, the system tray icon remained. Clicking on the
system tray icon opened gaim again.

After upgrading to Edgy, the system tray icon is missing. I DO have that
option configured in my plugins. Closing gaim closes the application
entirely. I can't find any way of having a system tray icon.

I removed gaim entirely using synaptic, delete my .gaim folder, and re-

Re: [Bug 66759] Re: Gnome system tray icon broken

2006-10-18 Thread Jeff Tucker
OK, I uninstalled gaim. sudo dpkg -l | grep gaim shows no packages,
nothing installed. I used synaptic to remove the packages with the
remove completely checked for each.

I deleted .gaim with rm -rf ~/.gaim

Now, I install gaim: sudo apt-get install gaim

Selecting previously deselected package gaim-data.
(Reading database ... 155034 files and directories currently installed.)
Unpacking gaim-data (from
.../gaim-data_1%3a2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu9_all.deb) ...
Selecting previously deselected package gaim.
Unpacking gaim (from .../gaim_1%3a2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu9_i386.deb) ...
Setting up gaim-data (2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu9) ...
Setting up gaim (2.0.0+beta3.1-1ubuntu9) ...

I run gaim from the Applications-Internet menu and set up an AIM
account. I see I'm logged in, I see my contacts. At this point, I have
no gaim icon on the top gnome bar like I used to. It used to appear up
by my clock. Now it's missing.

If I click Tools-Plugins, I see that there is a System Tray Icon
2.0.0beta3.1 listed which is already checked.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ ps auxww | grep gaim
jeff 25835 0.6 3.6 48268 18820 ?S14:04 0:01 gaim
jeff 26115 0.0 0.1 1904 676 pts/7S+ 14:08 0:00 grep gaim

I don't remember what happened before. If there is supposed to be an
applet running in ps for gaim, it's not there.

Now, I click the x in the upper right of the Buddy List. This used to
close the Buddy List but the system tray icon kept me logged in and
receiving messages.

[EMAIL PROTECTED]:~ $ ps auxww | grep gaim
jeff 26179 0.0 0.1 1904 680 pts/7S+ 14:09 0:00 grep gaim

As you can see, gaim is gone, not running.

This was a very generic install of gaim running on dapper. I upgraded to
edgy a couple days ago using synaptic. I'm using the default gnome
window manager and window layout. I really have no idea what else could
be interfering with this.

Thanks for your help.

annoying me (and I think, a lot of other users) daily. I even resorted

Eugenia, you are bringing a lot of light into this issue for me by your

Surely if they can ship Windows Media codecs (for a fee, because

they do the same for DVD playback?

[Bug 103630] Re: Include attached new GTK actions icons in Tango for Feisty (was: 20x20 new icons not in index.theme)

2007-04-15 Thread Jeff Fortin
I must add some pressure here. Very few are the third party icon themes
which inherit Human or Tangerine, but A LOT of icon themes inherit
Tango and gnome.

Please please please, don't limit this to Human Tangerine. These
themes are the default but they are not the most widely used. Covering
Tango would cover the last big remaining chunk (ideally, we should cover
gnome icon theme). It's a shame I am forced to use Tangerine (the pale
orange icons in toolbars do not work well with my eyes) because Tango is
now the less complete theme.

Actually, Tangerine inherits Tango!
Why the duck was this not fixed in Tango directly instead of doing it in
Tangerine as a priority? Doing it in Tango would have fixed Tangerine anyway.

[Bug 106838] title bars in gnome apps have gone missing

2007-04-15 Thread Jeff Hodges
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I updated yesterday afternoon, and rebooted later that evening. When
GNOME started up, all of the applications title bars were missing, I was
unable to switch between windows by mouse or keyboard, and some
applications appear to be segfaulting. You'll have to forgive how lame
this bug report is. The copy/paste mechanism is behaving
inconsistently, as well.

I've figured out that gnome-keybinding-properties segfaults right after opening
pango-basic-fc.so and /var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/D/DejaVu-Sans.ttf from
running strace -eopen on it. Here's the last few lines of it:
'
open(/proc/meminfo, O_RDONLY) = 15
open(/usr/lib/pango/1.6.0/modules/pango-basic-fc.so, O_RDONLY) = 15
open(/var/lib/defoma/fontconfig.d/D/DejaVu-Sans.ttf, O_RDONLY) = 15
--- SIGSEGV (Segmentation fault) @ 0 (0) ---
+++ killed by SIGSEGV (core dumped) +++
Process 24534 detached

Now, the fun part is, when I run `valgrind gnome-keybinding-properties`
it starts up fine, with some complaints about memory leaks.
Unfortunately, I'm not much of C/C++ hacker and I don't know what of the
valgrind output is important and what of it is not. I'll attach the
valgrind output here.

[Bug 87960] installing compiz will make using metacity impossible (even after uninstalling)

2007-02-25 Thread Jeff Fortin
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gnome-session

It seems that debian ubuntu include a patched /usr/bin/gnome-wm file,
which is part of the gnome-session package.

The comment at the top says:
# The user can specify his prefered WM by setting the WINDOW_MANAGER
# environment variable or setting the
# /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default gconf key.
#
# If this is not set, we search a list of known windowmanagers and use
# the first one that is found in the users's PATH

The big problem is this: it will prevent metacity from being used if compiz is
not avaible. To reproduce:
1- install compiz
2- use compiz, a gconf key /desktop/gnome/applications/window_manager/default
will be set to /usr/bin/compiz
3- uninstall/purge the compiz packages
4- logout and try loggin into gnome: metacity will never start no matter what
you do with your session

Looking at .xsession_errors, you see the reason: gnome-wm tries to call
compiz because it read the gconf key and did not check the binary
actually existed. This is completely crazy. If the binary is not
present, don't try running it, fallback to metacity! Actually, if
*anything* goes wrong, fallback to metacity!

Note: this hack is not present in vanilla gnome it seems:
http://svn.gnome.org/viewcvs/gnome-session/trunk/gnome-session/gnome-
wm?revision=4186view=markup

Users can be locked out of their sessions because of this. I was lucky
to have nautilus-open-terminal and [EMAIL PROTECTED] around.

It is a (way too) long standing bug for Dapper. It is very annoying for

[Bug 81010] gnome-applets broken due to missing dependency (liboobs-1-2)

[Bug 81636] GDM has no screensaver

2007-01-26 Thread Jeff Rasmussen
Public bug reported:

Binary package hint: gdm

I rebooted my computer (Edgy Eft) after work and returned the next
morning to see a burned in image from the gdm login screen.

I found a possible way to correct the behavior at http://gentoo-
wiki.com/TIP_Screensaver_in_Background

quote
GDM

OK, first thing is to set up gdm (I use 2.5.90.1, but it looks like 2.4.1.7
should work). As root, launch gdmsetup and set local login to standard greeter
with no background. Then open xscreensaver-demo, find your favourite
screensaver, hit Settings, Advanced, and note down the command line. Convert
the program to a full path - if it isn't in your path, it's probably in
/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver. Then, edit /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf, find the
BackgroundProgram line and set it to something like:
File: /etc/X11/gdm/gdm.conf

BackgroundProgram=/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver/skyrocket --root

or

# BackgroundProgram=/usr/lib/misc/xscreensaver/xmatrix -root -small
-delay 2

Now restart gdm

/etc/init.d/xdm restart

and watch the screensaver paint the root window behind the login box!
What other OS can do that?

Note, to make this works after you log in remove nautilus from your session so
that it wont start when you log into gnome, this will leave you with the
default grey background... but you can now run xscreensaver as a background,
along with Xearth Xplanet and Xaquarium.

[Bug 29690] Freecell fails to work on platforms where qthreads is not available

2006-01-25 Thread Jeff Bailey
Public bug reported:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/29690

Affects: gnome-games (Ubuntu)
   Severity: Normal
   Priority: (none set)
 Status: Unconfirmed

Description:
Upstream of Freecell have decided to make the game threaded. As a side
effect, it means that guile now needs thread support in order for
Freecell to work. Guile on PPC and amd64 doesn't have thread support.

There are two ways to solve this:

1) Port qthreads on these architectures. This is not terribly hard, but
is still a reasonable amount of work to make sure it's right. The
reason to not do this is that guile 1.8 no longer uses qthreads, so
upstream isn't going to care about this patch (although they will accept
it in their stable release).

2) Hack freecell to not use threads for now. The use of threads was
presumably some asthetic decision by upstream. Perhaps the freecell
help system now provides stunningly useful hints instead of just any
available choice? It would be sad to lose that functionality. ;)

Tks,
Jeff Bailey

[Bug 25905] never call debian/control rule and build this file during the build

2006-02-07 Thread Jeff Bailey
Public bug report changed:
https://launchpad.net/malone/bugs/25905

Changed in: cdbs (upstream)
   Assignee: (unassigned) = Jeff Bailey

Comment:
CDBS should handle this case gracefully. Specifically,

1) debian/rules debian/control should fail hard unless an environment variable
is set.

2) The rule should be called automatically.

This will cause an FTBFS on the buildd where the debian/control file is out of
date while still preserving the autogenerate function for maintainers who like
this feature.
