[Bug 552026] Re: Can not login to another new user
Thanks for the report. Have you checked that you're actually able to change user passwords? Just create a test user, then run 'sudo passwd $USER_LOGIN'. If you get a System Error message even when passwords are long enough, then you're experiencing bug 546874 (which as a workaround). ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete -- Can not login to another new user https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/552026 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 552221] Re: volume icon is missing
Well, pasting a link, expecting triagers will go through the whole thread to understand your problem is hardly a nice practice. I see there that your problem is solved, and you don't provide any detail about the problem. Did you upgrade from Karmic? Was the applet present in the list, only unchecked? And the package is wrong: $ dpkg -S gnome-volume-control-applet gnome-media: /usr/bin/gnome-volume-control-applet gnome-media: /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-volume-control-applet.desktop (ironically, the latter file is the one you should have on your system for the applet to start on its own) ** Package changed: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) = gnome-media (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gnome-media (Ubuntu) Status: New = Incomplete ** Changed in: gnome-media (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided = Medium -- volume icon is missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/552221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-media in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs
[Bug 552221] Re: volume icon is missing
Actually, in Ubuntu, you need to add the notification applet to the panel (not the notification area). It provides the messaging and the volume icon, that's why gnome-volume-control-applet is disabled (not sure how, though). The bug is in the fact that upgraders are not suggested to add it, but that may be a planned feature. -- volume icon is missing https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/552221 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-media in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID
Yeah, you were also able to set the phone number, and tweak membership to every kind of obscure privilege, plus changing home directory. But how many people need that? If you really need a specific UID, just create the user and change UID after, that doesn't hurt, and makes most people not scared by strange settings. Plus, not choosing an UID allows us to let adduser preferences come into play, which is very important for system-wide consistency. Note if you really need a specific profile for some users, have a look at /etc /gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf, where you can add MinUID and MaxUID options. -- Cannot Change User and Group ID https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/553746 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to system-tools-backends in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 134948] Re: required password length for users should be the same as pam.d/common-password
Yes, I'll have to fix that string, but that will be for Lucid+1. We can't really remove these checks because when changing password for a user different than the current one, PAM doesn't check the password, which is set using 'chpasswd'. The current situation is pretty lame, but we'd have to parse PAM's config files in the backends and get the information from there... Using PAM in the backends would be better, but we don't support conversation in the protocol, and that would be very hard to implement without breaking all the other gnome-system-tools. [Bug 238183] Re: Useless memory consumption
So by first time you mean first time from fresh boot; there's no package installation involved then. I think you're slightly wrong about memory usage, because the fact that every SystemToolsBackends perl process uses 10MB doesn't mean you can sum up those values to get the total: there's shared memory (reported as SHR in top) for about 2MB each, which explains why a quick test reports that 70MB are used. There's something I don't get here, because the scripts in themselves only represent a few KB, so I'd expect the total memory usage to be about 15MB. Maybe there's something we're doing wrong in the way we manage memory. Anyway, the best approach for now would be to stop starting all modules, and instead start the one we use. We could divide the footprint by 5 or so. -- Useless memory consumption https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/238183 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to system-tools-backends in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 488158] Re: users-admin should leave adduser handle main group creation
Good news, I've just finished a future patch that allows us to stop creating the main group ourselves. When creating an user, the backends can now omit the --gid option, and we let adduser (and equivalents) do the work. This is simpler for everyone. Should be in the next release. Now I need to get a bug in adduser fixed, because if you specify --uid without --gid, and adduser absolutely wants to use the UID as GID for the new main group, which can fail if the free UID we chose was used by a group (this happens on systems where things are a little messed up, but that's not rare). Since we still have to specify the UID (for now at least), adduser should be patched to choose another GID when needed. [Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration
OK, sorry for the delay Roger. So if I understand correctly, the only way to reproduce this problem is to create a new user when the users list appears empty? That would be logical, since we commit the data we have, which would be empty if it could not be loaded. But do you mean that the second time you start users-admin, the users list is empty even if you don't get the error message? That would be the real failure here: we should never allow the tool to run if retrieving data failed. Then, another part of the issue is that the backends seem to be too slow to start before the timeout is reached. That may come from the fact perl needs quite a bit of memory to run, which may need some swapping. That's relatively hard to solve, but at the very least we should display an error, not destroy the system's configuration. Xande: are you sure users-admin is starts faster after restoring the backup? That seems really strange if the files are the same. One interesting test (for both of you) would be to start the scripts before starting users-admin, and to compare the startup times: start users- admin once, run it again and see the time it needs, then wait for 5 minutes so that the scripts to stop automatically, and restart users- admin to compare. The first time is needed so that the tool is loaded in memory, but it should not be taken as reference for anything. ** Changed in: liboobs (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Triaged -- Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/240437 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to liboobs in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 214622] Re: Can not change username in users-admin
Hmm, I've checked how this could be implemented, and I'm sorry to say you that would be very hard. Currently, we are identifying users with their login, which means anything can change but that setting. Else we wouldn't be able to find what user it corresponds to. I'm not sure there are very common use cases for this anyway. Since that would require a special method that would break the general model in the System Tools Backends, I don't think that will happen. ** Summary changed: - Can not change username in users-admin + Cannot change user login in users-admin -- Cannot change user login in users-admin https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/214622 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 245928] Re: unable to set multiple users to same /home
In 2.29.2 we let adduser create the home directory from the login name. Home dir can only be changed for existing users, this is a design decision. So this bug can't happen now, since it would mean that a user with the same login already exists, which we don't allow. I've just tested it with adduser, and the following procedure would work: we could add an user profile setting for Home, that you would be able to set in /etc/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf. Maybe for the next cycle. ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed = Triaged ** Changed in: gnome-system-tools (Ubuntu) Importance: Low = Wishlist ** Summary changed: - unable to set multiple users to same /home + Unable to create multiple users with the same home -- Unable to create multiple users with the same home https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/245928 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Ubuntu Desktop Bugs, which is subscribed to gnome-system-tools in ubuntu. -- desktop-bugs mailing list desktop-bugs@lists.ubuntu.com https://lists.ubuntu.com/mailman/listinfo/desktop-bugs

[Bug 237488] Re: Let packages add user privilege templates
Sorry if I change my mind, but I don't see how this could happen. We need a list of groups desktop users and administrators should be in, and it would be very complex to make that list dynamic.
