[Bug 552026] Re: Can not login to another new user

2010-03-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for the report. Have you checked that you're actually able to
change user passwords? Just create a test user, then run 'sudo passwd
$USER_LOGIN'. If you get a System Error message even when passwords
are long enough, then you're experiencing bug 546874 (which as a
workaround).

[Bug 552221] Re: volume icon is missing

2010-03-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Well, pasting a link, expecting triagers will go through the whole
thread to understand your problem is hardly a nice practice. I see there
that your problem is solved, and you don't provide any detail about the
problem. Did you upgrade from Karmic? Was the applet present in the
list, only unchecked?

And the package is wrong:
$ dpkg -S gnome-volume-control-applet
gnome-media: /usr/bin/gnome-volume-control-applet
gnome-media: /etc/xdg/autostart/gnome-volume-control-applet.desktop
(ironically, the latter file is the one you should have on your system for the
applet to start on its own)

[Bug 552221] Re: volume icon is missing

2010-03-31 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Actually, in Ubuntu, you need to add the notification applet to the
panel (not the notification area). It provides the messaging and the
volume icon, that's why gnome-volume-control-applet is disabled (not
sure how, though). The bug is in the fact that upgraders are not
suggested to add it, but that may be a planned feature.

When exactly did you upgrade from Karmic? Normally, since beta1, the
indicator-applet is added to the panel automatically. If you upgraded

[Bug 553746] Re: Cannot Change User and Group ID

2010-04-03 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yeah, you were also able to set the phone number, and tweak membership
to every kind of obscure privilege, plus changing home directory. But
how many people need that? If you really need a specific UID, just
create the user and change UID after, that doesn't hurt, and makes most
people not scared by strange settings.

Plus, not choosing an UID allows us to let adduser preferences come into
play, which is very important for system-wide consistency. Note if you
really need a specific profile for some users, have a look at /etc
/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf, where you can add MinUID and
MaxUID options.

[Bug 555139] Re: Cannot enable user

2010-04-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for investigating the code, but I don't think the line you cite
is the source of the bug. This line is only run when changing your own
password, which is a completely different case. Furthermore, enabling an
account works for me following the same procedure as you.

So I rather suspect that changing password is failing on your system,
and that explains why the account stays disabled. Could you check that
you're able to change passwords, e.g. by running in a console 'sudo
passwd testuser' ? If you get a System Error, then you're suffering
from bug 546874.

(Then we have the more general issue of error reporting from the
backends, but that requires much more work...)

[Bug 134948] Re: required password length for users should be the same as pam.d/common-password

2010-04-05 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Yes, I'll have to fix that string, but that will be for Lucid+1.

We can't really remove these checks because when changing password for a
user different than the current one, PAM doesn't check the password,
which is set using 'chpasswd'. The current situation is pretty lame, but
we'd have to parse PAM's config files in the backends and get the
information from there... Using PAM in the backends would be better, but
we don't support conversation in the protocol, and that would be very
hard to implement without breaking all the other gnome-system-tools. Not
likely to happen.

[Bug 557608] Re: user list in shutdown menu is not update on user deletion in users-admin

2010-04-07 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for your report. I can confirm the bug, but it has nothing to do
with users-admin. Just removing an user via 'deluser' triggers the bug.

What is interesting is that new users appear on the fly in the menu,
while they are not removed when deleted. This makes me think something
very trivial is going on here, the code to check for updates being in
place already.

[Bug 490093] Re: [users-admin] Password is reset to old value when it's been changed by running about-me

2010-04-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
It's a little late to fix this for Karmic, it should have been done
months ago. For now, best answer is upgrade to Lucid, since it's a
LTS.

The fix wouldn't be very complex. We should close the user settings
dialog when user clicks on the Change password button. I can post a
patch, if a core dev is OK to upload a new package to Karmic.

Since Karmic services-admin is not shipped, and this is fixed upstream

/etc/passwd file looks right to me. And AFAICT the root account is
always shown, so that's not the cause of the problem.

the values are the same?

UID_MAX 6

[Bug 210710] Re: System Admin Users and Groups: only root available

2009-12-30 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
It's not unlikely that users-admin itself has introduced those broken
settings, but we can't really be sure. I'd need a list of all programs
that may change this file (maybe there aren't at all). But that doesn't
mean there isn't something broken here. I've checked our code, and
everything seems fine - a 0 there could mean there was a problem with
the DBus message. Not easy to find out. If anybody has details of what
he did before this bug appeared, that would be useful.

Anyway, the next release won't commit these settings every time you
create and user, so that won't happen again in Lucid.

[Bug 238183] Re: Useless memory consumption

2010-01-01 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
In Karmic, I can confirm that the -m Platform script does not die after
3 minutes, consuming 10MB until reboot. I'll give a look at this
problem.

Though, you mention in the description that there's a 90MB usage on
first launch. I guess this comes from the package installation, isn't
it? If that usage disappears after it's done, then that part is not a
bug.

[Bug 238183] Re: Useless memory consumption

2010-01-02 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
So by first time you mean first time from fresh boot; there's no
package installation involved then. I think you're slightly wrong about
memory usage, because the fact that every SystemToolsBackends perl
process uses 10MB doesn't mean you can sum up those values to get the
total: there's shared memory (reported as SHR in top) for about 2MB
each, which explains why a quick test reports that 70MB are used.

There's something I don't get here, because the scripts in themselves
only represent a few KB, so I'd expect the total memory usage to be
about 15MB. Maybe there's something we're doing wrong in the way we
manage memory.

Anyway, the best approach for now would be to stop starting all modules,
and instead start the one we use. We could divide the footprint by 5 or
so.

[Bug 488158] Re: users-admin should leave adduser handle main group creation

2010-01-04 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Good news, I've just finished a future patch that allows us to stop
creating the main group ourselves. When creating an user, the backends
can now omit the --gid option, and we let adduser (and equivalents) do
the work. This is simpler for everyone. Should be in the next release.

Now I need to get a bug in adduser fixed, because if you specify --uid
without --gid, and adduser absolutely wants to use the UID as GID for
the new main group, which can fail if the free UID we chose was used by
a group (this happens on systems where things are a little messed up,
but that's not rare). Since we still have to specify the UID (for now at
least), adduser should be patched to choose another GID when needed. Not
too hard, I guess.

[Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration

2010-01-08 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
OK, sorry for the delay Roger. So if I understand correctly, the only
way to reproduce this problem is to create a new user when the users
list appears empty? That would be logical, since we commit the data we
have, which would be empty if it could not be loaded.

But do you mean that the second time you start users-admin, the users
list is empty even if you don't get the error message? That would be the
real failure here: we should never allow the tool to run if retrieving
data failed.

Then, another part of the issue is that the backends seem to be too slow
to start before the timeout is reached. That may come from the fact perl
needs quite a bit of memory to run, which may need some swapping. That's
relatively hard to solve, but at the very least we should display an
error, not destroy the system's configuration.

Xande: are you sure users-admin is starts faster after restoring the
backup? That seems really strange if the files are the same. One
interesting test (for both of you) would be to start the scripts before
starting users-admin, and to compare the startup times: start users-
admin once, run it again and see the time it needs, then wait for 5
minutes so that the scripts to stop automatically, and restart users-
admin to compare. The first time is needed so that the tool is loaded in
memory, but it should not be taken as reference for anything.

[Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration

2010-01-08 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
What I asked Xande to test should be interesting for you too:
One interesting test (for both of you) would be to start the scripts before

You don't actually need to do anything other than starting and closing
the tool, noting the (approximate) time it needs to be up. Does the
users list appear the second time? Is it visible the third time (i.e.
after waiting 5 minutes without using users-admin)?

Good catch indeed! That's the button used to change password when the
selected user is the current one. Does the bug appear only with that
user? In other cases, it should be hidden.

Anyway, this hack should go away in the next release, with a more
generic dialog from upstream.

[Bug 240437] Re: Creating an user destroys most of users and groups configuration

2010-01-10 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
/usr/share/system-tools-backends-2.0/scripts/SystemToolsBackends.pl -m U$
This is a bad copy/paste: U$ can't work, obviously, that should be UsersConfig.

/usr/sbin/system-tools-backends
Should be /usr/bin/system-tools-backends in 8.04.

Anyway, you don't need to run those to perform the test I suggested.
Just run users-admin directly.

Another issue is that I'm absolutely not familiar with the codebase with
had in Hardy. If Xande could replicate this test too, that would allow
me to be sure the same problem still appears in Karmic. The goal is to
fix this for Lucid, there's little chance we can do anything for Hardy
at this point.

[Bug 214622] Re: Can not change username in users-admin

2010-01-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Hmm, I've checked how this could be implemented, and I'm sorry to say
you that would be very hard. Currently, we are identifying users with
their login, which means anything can change but that setting. Else we
wouldn't be able to find what user it corresponds to.

I'm not sure there are very common use cases for this anyway. Since that
would require a special method that would break the general model in the
System Tools Backends, I don't think that will happen.

[Bug 245928] Re: unable to set multiple users to same /home

2010-01-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
In 2.29.2 we let adduser create the home directory from the login name.
Home dir can only be changed for existing users, this is a design
decision. So this bug can't happen now, since it would mean that a user
with the same login already exists, which we don't allow.

I've just tested it with adduser, and the following procedure would
work: we could add an user profile setting for Home, that you would be
able to set in /etc/gnome-system-tools/user-profiles.conf. Maybe for the

[Bug 326135] Re: User Privileges ignored

2010-01-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
If these groups are really obsolete, we should not create them at all,
they would disappear from users-admin.

[Bug 344267] Re: users administration tool deletes all users

2010-01-11 Thread Milan Bouchet-Valat
Thanks for your report. Are you able to reproduce this problem? I'd
really like to fix that if we can get enough information.

At least I'm sure that in Lucid users won't be affected, and groups
won't be removed. Only group membership will be affected, which is still
a problem though.
