[Desktop-packages] [Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working
I'm getting the same error (touching the touchpad = mouse going crazy - it eventually settles in the top right corner and is unresponsive to either clicks or movement, and none of the above work arounds have worked for me. I've noticed, however, that if I plug in a USB mouse after the bug occurs, I can move the pointer freely, but the system refuses to recognise any mouse clicks, whether from the USB mouse or the touchpad. If I plug in a USB mouse before the error occurs, it works fine until I touch the touchpad, then the above occurs. In case it helps, I've also been unable to disable the touchpad through any ubuntu settings (including dconf), whether for when typing, or just turning the damn thing off altogether. The function key combo, which is built into the laptop, does work however. Also, this bug was occurring randomly when first installed (every second or third reboot had it occurring), but since I ran all the latest updates, it now occurs every single time from the first touch of the touchpad. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868400 Title: Synaptics touchpad stops working Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” source package in Oneiric: Incomplete Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” source package in Oneiric: Confirmed Bug description: Synaptic touchpad stops working, seen on a few different Thinkpads. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 860427] Re: Oneiric displays 'Laptop battery critically low' message after AC is unplugged when 'charged' shown on battery indicator
I finally found a workaround in this thread: http://ubuntuforums.org//showthread.php?t=1866533 . Specifically, $ gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.plugins.power 'use-time-for- policy' 'false' made it possible to run my netbook for several minutes without AC (I didn't bother trying longer), and dconf-tools and experiment show this setting is persistent across reboots. Never ever automatically modify ~/.profile. Plenty of reasons. One reason is that it can make it impossible to login if something does not work as expected. Second is that it makes it difficult/impossible to keep the profiles in sync between different machines. This is severe bad design. If you can't do it in any proper way inside the gnome environment, write it into a separate file and use a . file in .profile. But never ever try to fiddle around or overwrite a user-written .profile. BTW, the script fails if the .profile contains several export commands e.g. in a case instruction. This is *REALLY BAD*. what to do in unity? -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-power-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/881750 Title: ubuntu 11.10 unity hibernate when battery full Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: in Ubuntu 10.04 gnome had a bug that was worked around but cannot be done in Unity in 11.10 IN GNOME: Whenever I unplug my laptop from AC power, I get a window popping up that says Laptop battery critically low. Computer will hibernate very soon unless it is plugged in. And a little notification pops up that says that the laptop has 5 minutes until the power drains. But when I click on the battery icon, it says that I have 4 hours of battery time remaining. My battery is a six cell battery with 97.1% charge capacity. I have no idea why it's saying that it's almost out of power. That doesn't come up if I turn on my laptop after I unplug it. Does anyone know why it's coming up or how I can disable it? WORKAROUND: If you open up a terminal and run gconf-editor, go to apps, navigate to gnome-power-manager, click on general, and then uncheck use_time_for_policy, it will fix the warning messages. Some people (myself included) were also having trouble with it automatically hibernating/suspending when unplugged, and this fixes that issue also. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 886490] Re: use aufs instead of tmpfs for guest account
Hi Gunnar, thanks for the hint. Does that tutorial still aply? Seems to be almost a year old. And I noticed that my test machine with an early beta version of 11.10 still came with those guest-session packages (and the guest session could be disabled by simply removing the guest session package), while machines upgraded or freshly installed with the final 11.10 don't have these packages. Seems as if these guest session functionality had been moved into lightdm itself somewhere in the beta state of 11.10. There is not even a /etc/guest-session on my machines. Now it seems to setup the guest account through /usr/sbin/guest-account, which uses some files from /etc/guest-session, if they exist. It however allows only local settings, but not a different method of mounting the file system. The solution might be to write a completely different shell script, and I guess the configuration variable guest-account-script would allow to run a different guest script than /usr/sbin/guest-account. Which is not really advisable since the documentation of lightdm is rather poor and it is not exactly obvious what lightdm expects from this script. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886490 Title: use aufs instead of tmpfs for guest account Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: lightdm creates a directory in /tmp and mounts a tmpfs over it as a home directory for guest users. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 883744] Re: gnome-terminal does not honor the Show menubar by default in new terminals option
There is a workaround for this problem. Create a new file in /etc/X11/Xsession.d and name it as you want, say /etc/X11/Xsession.d/99baroslized, and write unset UBUNTU_MENUPROXY to it. Unfortunately, ~/.profile is not acceptable because the variable is set after ~/.profile is called. In addition to the annoying bug, GNOME Terminal in Ubuntu 11.10 has two more bugs in my experience. So I've decided to temporarily use sakura (a terminal emulator) instead. I will report them soon. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-terminal in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/883744 Title: gnome-terminal does not honor the Show menubar by default in new terminals option Status in “gnome-terminal” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: When launched, gnome-terminal has a menu bar, even though 'Show menubar by default in new terminals' is clearly unchecked. I only have the default profile. This happens both when launching a new gnome- terminal from the command line, and when opening a new terminal window through the File menu of an existing gnome-terminal. In both cases, the terminal launches without the menu, but the menu flickers into existence after half a second or so. If it helps, I am on Gnome Classic (no effects), so none of that Unity crap for me. I've been told by several users that the same thing happens to menus. Now, there's also been two separate questions about it on AskUbuntu.com which tells me that the issue is absolutely real. See http://askubuntu.com/questions/64464/empty- nautilus-menus and http://askubuntu.com/questions/75733/nautilus- menus-empty-ubuntu-11-10. I haven't been able to reproduce it reliably, though it _seems_ to have something to do with workspace switching, but that's only speculation. Seems as if these guest session functionality had been moved into lightdm itself somewhere in the beta state of 11.10. Right. There is not even a /etc/guest-session on my machines. It's created if you install that tarball. Now it seems to setup the guest account through /usr/sbin/guest-account, which uses some files from /etc/guest-session, if they exist. Precisely. It however allows only local settings, but not a different method of mounting the file system. True, but I got the impression from your bug description that it's customization possibilities you are after, and that changing the mount method isn't an end in itself. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 886468] Re: Problem to read PDF
Well, you do not need to reinstall a complete OS just because a single program is not working. Maybe try to reinstall Document Viewer. If the problem persists, we'll look at it. You in the description mentioned that you can't use your touchpad to scroll through pages so you use mouse. Does it work with the mouse? Until the issue is resolved you can try other PDF readers available in the Software Center. Also Google Chrome does a nice job as a PDF reader though you might miss some features. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/886468 Title: Problem to read PDF Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Hi ! [Desktop-packages] [Bug 886555] [NEW] keyboard selection in nautilus buggy
Public bug reported: Normally in nautilus if you search in the window using the keyboard you get the little searchbox on the lower right corner with your preview. Now if you klick up or down on the keyboard or turning the scroll wheel on the mouse the next matching search results will be displayed. If you klick ESC the searchbox will be closed and purged. Now in Ubuntu (but not in other distributions like fedora), if you search with your keyboard you'll get the first matching search result but turning the mouse wheel scrolls the screen and mouse keys move the selection. Thats annoying enough but if you decide you want to search again the searchbox adds your chars instead of replacing them, and also if you want to clear the box using the backspace button like you normaly would do, nautilus just goes up one level. And sometimes the searchbox will only clear if you close the nautilus window and open a new one. Not very user friendly. Like you, I was also going to suggest it was related to video drivers, but given that you have high CPU usage when playing an OGG file, that can't be the cause. I suspect that this is your problem: Intel(R) Atom(TM) CPU N270 @ 1.60GHz That's not a very powerful CPU. And if I recall correctly, your Intel Corporation Mobile 945GME Express Integrated Graphics Controller is too old to support VA-API. However if the video plays smoothly I wouldn't worry about it. Just don't try to do much else while playing the video. At 60%, you should be able to do other things while listening to an OGG. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/871412 Title: more than 80% cpu usage when watching youtube video (flash or html5) firefox and chromium Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Whether it's plugin-container or firefox with html5 enabled, watching youtube is cpu consuming. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 886093] Re: spreadsheet export to xhtml produces xml parse error
Now I am not sure, perhaps the bug should be filed against Firefox. The trigger for the bug is a trailing . on the file name of the .html output. I tried to reproduce it this morning, without success, compared the output file with the defective file from yesterday, meld told me they were identical. I then saw the trailing . on yesterday's file name, and renamed a copy. This did not trigger the error. Let me puzzle a bit. I don't understand xlms well enough to see what is happening. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 176125] Re: Ubuntu should activate the IPv6 privacy extension by default (echo 2 /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/use_tempaddr)
@Michael Heimann yeah, the idea IS to have a workaround for ssh, and only for it (or some other server-software). with tempaddr = 2 you have a dynamic and a static ip, and softwares are using the dynamic by default, if not configured otherwise. You can surf (more) anonymously, but your ssh-session uses the static ip, so the session does not die when the tempaddr is discarded. It should be a user decision to use the static ip, the default should be safe for the average user, which means that he's not exposed by a static ip. Server software will bind to all intefaces by default, so a http or ssh server will be reachable on the dynamic address (mostly useless for you) and the static address (useful). Client software which needs long sessions often can be configured to use a specific from-ip, as i showed you the manual for the ssh-client. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/176125 Title: Ubuntu should activate the IPv6 privacy extension by default (echo 2 /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/use_tempaddr) Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “procps” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Binary package hint: procps Some background information: recently Free ADSL, one of the biggest ISP in France, added IPv6 support possibly exposing 2.5 millions of users to IPv6 The address are configured automatically and by default linux will build it using the MAC address. However this presents a risk of privacy loss: - there is an unique identifier which can be used by website to track the location of a laptop or pda - some information about the model of the network card (other information can be probably derived if you know the serial number of the card) is leaked The following rfc (http://tools.ietf.org/html/draft-ietf-ipngwg-temp- addresses-v2-00) mitigitates this problems by introducing temporary addresses to be used by outgoing connection (in addition to the static address which can be used for incoming connection and have a dns name associated with it). To activate it under linux you just need to activate the following in sysctl: echo 2 /proc/sys/net/ipv6/conf/all/use_tempaddr or add net.ipv6.conf.all.use_tempaddr=2 thanks for protecting the privacy of the clueless users by default :) To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/176125/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

It isn't totally frozen, the menus and bottons react, but the movie itself doesn't continue, even if play is pressed and waiting for minutes. I would expect the movie to continue when play is pressed. All Quicktime videos I have seem to have same effect. But they all are filmed by Nikon Coolpix 3200 digital camera, with best resolution. And last at least 10 seconds. I attached freeze.mov as an example movie with what it happens every time following the steps to reproduce mentioned below. It happened once with asf-file also, but the resolution is much smaller so it might help with it not happening more often. But I would assume that this is not related only to mov-files. Steps to reproduce (it is quite random, but I found that this is the best way to make it happen every time): 0. Totem is not open 1. Double click movie file to start it 2. Press space bar down instantly when movie opens and don't release it. (5 seconds is enough for me) 3. Totem freezes. The buttons and menu react, but pressing play/pause doesn't do anything. It seems as if the movie is permanently paused. Only way to recover AFAIK is to restart Totem. Since xbmc is fully open sourced, and the licensed issue is long behind us (as can be read here: http://bugs.debian.org/cgi- bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=469397 and here: http://trac.xbmc.org/ticket/7983 ) i believe Ubuntu should add this (and maybe also Boxee) to the latest and greatest selection of software in the USC thanks in advance.
