This is possible if I use "mount -t cifs" instead, but that is a more manual and less flexible process that should not be necessary. To reproduce: 1. in Nautilus, mount an smb/cifs share with "smb://" 2. right-click a file/directory in the nautilus view 3. from the context menu, pick "Make Link" Expected behaviour: A link to the selected file/directory should be created, as would occur on a local ext4 filesystem Actual behaviour: I get an error saying "The target doesn't support symbolic links". My guess is that this is because gvfs' smb implementation doesn't implement the kind of UNIX extensions that the Samba cifs client uses. ** Branch linked: lp:~evfool/brasero/fixlp848340 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to brasero in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/848340 Title: Brasero can't select DVD drive to burn image Status in A disc burning application for gnome 2: Fix Released Status in “brasero” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: [Impact] When trying to burn an image using brasero (or selecting the drive to write to using libbrasero from any application using it) doesn't allow to select the drive (the drive appears on the list, but it can't be selected), thus making writing a DVD/CD impossible, which is a major regression from the previous releases. [Development fix] The fix has been committed upstream at GNOME, see the commit [1] in GNOME git imported in launchpad as revision 3422 of the brasero master branch [2] [Stable fix] Applying the changes from the commit mentioned above to the 3.2.0 version retrieved with apt-get source from oneiric fixes the problem. [Test case] Right-click an ISO file and select Open with Brasero Disc Burner, with a Blank Disc in you CD/DVD+-RW drive, and try to select the drive to write the ISO file to. Before applying the patch, you will not be able, the combo will remain empty even after selecting the drive, but after applying the commit, you are able to select the drive and write the iso file to it. [Regression potential] I am not aware of any potential issues. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 868400] Re: Synaptics touchpad stops working
Just to re-affirm Here when the freeze occurs 'randomly' there are always 2 syndaemon instances but NO indication that lightdm is involved. There are however 2 scenarios where lightdm is involved, but they are very limited. One is sometimes on a live session, the other is the very first login after a new install. That can be seen here - ~$ ps aux |grep syndaemon |grep -v grep lightdm 1366 0.0 0.0 3524 772 ?S21:02 0:01 syndaemon -i 0.5 -K -R doug 1503 0.0 0.0 3524 772 ?S21:02 0:01 syndaemon -i 0.5 -K -R This only happens on the first login on a new install and then never occurs again . So 5+ weeks of having the option disabled in gnome-control-center - no occurrences 1+ week of having the option disabled in gnome-control-center but starting syndaemon directly from a Startup Application - no occurrences This has been tested on both 11.10 & 12.04 A1 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-settings-daemon in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/868400 Title: Synaptics touchpad stops working Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” source package in Oneiric: Incomplete Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” source package in Oneiric: Confirmed Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” source package in Precise: Incomplete Status in “xserver-xorg-input-synaptics” source package in Precise: Confirmed Bug description: Synaptic touchpad stops working, seen on a few different Thinkpads. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 904032] Re: gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing
** Changed in: gedit Status: Unknown => New ** Changed in: gedit Importance: Unknown => Wishlist -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/904032 Title: gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome: New Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am attempting to use gedit to spool the printout from a legacy program to an ink jet printer. The file is in ASCII, with a form feed character defining each page. Gedit displays the form feed as a box with the hexadecimal value 000C in it. This is all good. When I select "print" from the gedit menu, it sends the text to the printer neatly formatted with a header and page numbering of its own. This is also acceptable. When the legacy program created the text, it determined that additional information should appear an a new form, so it wanted to eject the nearly full form, and begin the next block of information beneath a new header. It emitted a form feed to produce that effect. Gedit happily creates a graphic box with 000C in it, prints the box, and proceeds to print the legacy header (which says "page 2" on it) on the bottom of page One. When it runs out of paper, it prints its Page 2 header, continues to print the legacy second page, a 000C box, and the header for the legacy "page 3" and part of page three until it runs out of paper again, and so forth. Unicode 000C is defined as a white space control character, as are carriage return and line feed. You don't print them, you obey them. Do the same for form feed. Be kind to old programs and old programmers. If my C program contains a "printf" statement with a "\f" in it, give me a new sheet of paper on the printout. That way your page 2 will also be my page 2 and the printout will appear pretty much like the programmer (myself in a previous millennium) intended. Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your description didn't include enough information. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 904032] Re: gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing
Yes, I ended up using "lp" to obtain a printout. I don't want to have to teach people how to do that. The point of having a GUI system is not having to use the command line. Gedit is the tool that opens when I click on a .txt file. Printing should be a one step operation after that. We're supposed to be making it easy for them (the command line challenged). The report has been forwarded to Gnome, and a link established. Thanks for your help! The link and how-to were perfect. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gedit in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/904032 Title: gedit fails to obey page breaks when printing Status in Light-Weight Text Editor for Gnome: Unknown Status in “gedit” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I am attempting to use gedit to spool the printout from a legacy program to an ink jet printer. Currently - the tag from "Locations.xml" is used within the "weather-bom.c" to retrieve information from the appropriate bom.gov.au URL which if successful is then parsed in the "bom_parse" function. With the new HTML forecast pages for various locations however, the data can not be successfully parsed and instead the message "Forecast not currently available for this location." shows up on the Forecast tab of weather-applet. --- Area of Interest --- Within "weather-bom.c" - the following line of code points to URLs (depending on location) that now have HTML forecast data rather than plain text... url = g_strdup_printf ("http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?%s.txt";, loc->zone + 1); --- Suggested Fix --- I suggest/propose that the URL above be changed to point to plain text documents on the BOM FTP server (ftp://ftp2.bom.gov.au/anon/gen/fwo/) with the appropriate weather station zone. e.g. for Sydney (Zone IDN10064) - currently the code would point to: http://www.bom.gov.au/cgi-bin/wrap_fwo.pl?IDN10064.txt However this is now a HTML forecast, which causes the issue noted above... by pointing the code to: ftp://ftp2.bom.gov.au/anon/gen/fwo/IDN10064.txt The plain text forecast can be used without any modification to the other functions/aspects of the code. --- Patches - Untested! --- Please see the attached "weather-bom.c" which includes the suggested fix (i.e. patched version). It is similar to the other bug I reported that the remaining download time during dist-upgrade from hardy to intrepid and from feisty to hardy could not be read in languages hitting long words in localisation Suggested fix: make "File Operations" resizable via "grabbing" the corners/edges. Hello Pedro ! I can verify the problem but NOT its solution with a virtualized Oneiric Live-CD: Burning the ISO image with Brasero + wodim and verifying the md5sum for the CD leads to: md5sum: /dev/sr1: Input/output error Doing the same thing with Brasero + Brandon Snider's cdrecord also leads to: md5sum: /dev/sr1: Input/output error Afterwards I burned the ISO on - the not virtualized - Lucid again and it still works fine, i.e. correct checksum. Steps to reproduce the problem: 1. Create a folder with a number of sub-directories, enough so that the list view will have to scroll. 2. Try to drop a file or directory from another window or the desktop into the list. 3. Cringe as you cannot get the file not to drop into one of the sub-directories Actual Results: File ends up in a sub-directory Expected Results: File ends up where I wanted it Original Description: similar to bug #49348 (no lasso selection in list view) it is impossible to DnD a file into a folder when in list view. Note: dragging the file in between other files, not folders. You can drag them into a folder just fine, in list view. But to have a file append a list of other files in a folder, you'd have to 'move up' one level in the filesystem hierarchy, and drag the file into the right folder. It can off course be dragged to the tree, but to an ex-Win user this is strange. Lasso selection and DnD do work in Explorer. Moreover, in icon view, lasso selection and DnD are not a problem, so this would confuse the user (I guess). "Hey, yesterday I could DnD just fine, but in this folder it won't work".
