  I have an ods file with an embedded image, size of ods is around 36000 bytes. 
When I save it as an xlsx file the size increases to nearly 1.5 meg. Opening up 
the xlsx file in a editor (emacs) I can see numerous copies for the image - 71 
copies of it all the identical size  - there is only one copy of the image in 
the original  ods. I would expect that the image is not replicated.
  If I open the xlsx file in libreoffice, I can click and drag the copies of 
the image as separate images.

  libre office calc garbled window screen when resized

Bug description:
  Whenever I have to resize my Calc window, it's window is garbled from
  the screen. The menus themselves are still accessible by their
  shortcut keys (if you remember them). If you further resize the window
  to a much smaller one, the menus and the top bar disappears entirely

  The workaround I found is to use ALT-SPACEBAR to access the window
  menu then maximize the window again. Next is to access the window menu
  again and select restore to get back to the window size you want.

  It doesn't crash libre office but you lose your GUI.

I reported this problem to Launchpad a few weeks ago.  My clients
couldn't open and save files created in LibreOffice on a Windows
network.  It was, however, possible to open a file located on a server
on a Windows-like network (one using SMB), in LibreOffice Writer, by
browsing to the file, using "Places", right-clicking on it, and
selecting LibreOffice from the context box to launch Writer with the
file being automatically loaded in the process.  It was possible to edit
the file, opened in this manner, and then save it back to the server.

I have now "solved" the problem by upgrading from 11.10 to 12.04 but
possibly found a minor bug in the installation script of the 12.04
upgrade so I thought I should report it here for the benefit of those
faced with this problem and those who so marvellously fix the issues
raised (and for whose efforts I am so grateful!).

I am a "mid-range" user (compared to the engineers who work for me..
they are brilliant but not disposed to reporting the things they do.) so
pardon me if I write something that is not entirely precise or accurate.
Please feel free, anyone, to correct what I say.

In the Gnome human interface there is a virtual file system that
provides a compatible means by which Linux can interact with a network
that uses Microsoft Windows-like file messaging; called SMB (standing
for Server Message Block protocol which Microsoft modifed and called
Common Internet File System - CIFS).  The Linux application that
provides compatibility between Linux systems and CIFS file servers is
called SAMBA (First developed by Dr Andrew Tridgell - now supported by a
team of good guys.).   The compatibility layer provided by Gnome to work
with the CIFS/Samba file system is called the Gnome Virtual File System.
(You may have seen .gvfs in the paths of files. )  In Ubuntu 11.10,
there was not a good working relationship between the GVFS and
LibreOffice.  Indeed, within LibreOffice (and OpenOffice for that
matter) running within Gnome, the means of browsing a Windows network,
or a network generally, has always been unsatisfactory.  (I hasten to
add this is in no way a criticism of the people who have given so much
of themselves developing these applications!) For example, when browsing
for a file in LibreOffice you can't rename files, copy or move files or
delete files as you can so conveniently in MS Windows.  There is no
button to click on to go to a network and when you click on the drop-
down box in LibreOffice file browse, there is no obvious tree allowing
you to easily browse your network.

But, and here's the really good news, there is a Gnome compatibility
layer package that you can install (if you knew about it) that will
solve some of these problems.  You go to the Synaptic Package manager
and in the search box, type Gnome LibreOffice.  For Ubuntu 12.10, you
really need "office productivity suite -- GTK+ 3.0 integration" but the
earlier version I found seems to work also.  That's what you need if you
want to browse all files at your disposal when working within
LibreOffice.  So install the package and things seem to work really,
really well.

When you first upgrade to Ubuntu 12.10, you find the browse within
LibreOffice is minimal.  (Confused me entirely!)  Then I discovered that
the upgrade, whilst giving me the latest LibreOffice at that time, did
not automatically install "office productivity suite -- GTK+ 3.0
integration".  Once you have that installed, if you have set a bookmark
to a file on a network server, using the facility provided in  "Places"
to browse and network and bookmark folders, then this bookmark will show
in the LibreOffice file browse.  Still not the best, but a heck of a
long way from what used to be!

The good news is that you can now, on a Windows-like network, save to
files on your "samba" server,  or browse to files already on the server,
open them, edit them and save them.  As for being able to do all those
other things like, copy, rename, move, delete, etc... well I sure the
good guys are working on it.

1. Issue has been happening since 11.10, but same thing still happens in 12.04.
2. Hardware: HP EliteBook 8440p with Intel Graphics.
3. Only happens when the system is docked, otherwise there is no issue.

Steps to Reproduce:

1. Go to "Brightness and Lock".
2. Set the screen to turn off when inactive for 10 minutes (though timeframe 
doesn't seem to matter).
3. Set "Lock screen after:" to "Screen turns off".
4. Wait for the screen to dim and turn blank.
5. Wait longer for the screen to power off completely.
6. Wait another minute or so.
7, The external monitor will start to flicker on-and-off for a bit.
8. Try to unlock the screen.
9. The screen will successfully unlock.
10. Once unlocked you will see that your window manager (Compiz) has melted 
down.  You cannot resize windows, etc. because the title bars have all 
disappeared.
11. I have found no way to recover from this issue short of a reboot (I usually 
get to a command terminal and try to shut it down as gracefully as I can).

The only work-around to this issue is to set "Turn screen off when
inactive for:" to "Never".  However, this is not ideal as it means the
screen will always continue to suck battery even after the screen has
been locked (even when not docked, unless I remember to change this
setting every time I undock).

I am assuming I cannot be the only one having this issue.

Just confirming the issue with Evolution freezing when an attempt is
made to select a colour (color in US spelling - for benefit of search
engines) whilst creating a new email.  I recently upgraded to 12.04.  In
11.10 this problem was definitely not present.

I have tried a number of variations to see if the problem is repeatable.
It is.  I have highlighted text and then attempted to select colour.
Evolution freezes.  Similarly, with a new blank email in compose mode,
selecting the colour also causes evolution to freez.

  When selecting color on Email compose in Evolution the interface hangs
  and will not take input. The application is still resonding i.e.
  checking for mail and calendar reminders, but all button, text fields
  and menus do not respond. If you try to close the compose window using
  the unity window buttons, the save change diaglog opens but these
  buttons do not work either (mouse or keyboard).

  The only way to stop the application is xkill or kill.

  In Find&Replace, a regular expression of  "^" (without the quotes)
  never matches anything in the Basic macro editor (it reportedly does
  work in document text).  "^" should match the front of every line.

  For example, if you want to comment out a block of code in the Basic macro 
editor, it should be possible to
  Find ^ in a selection and replace it with "rem " and have "rem " inserted at 
the front of all the selected lines.
  But  ^ alone does not work, and never matches any lines.

  The use of of ^ alone to match the start of lines (and, similarly $
  for end-of-lines) has been a fundamental feature of regular
  expressions in computer systems since they were first widely used in
  1970s Unix.  OO should not deviate.

  border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
  altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
  "invisible" region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
  that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
  perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System >
  Preferences > Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
  still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
  a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
  controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).

  Probably this problem is reported but the ubuntu-bug system cannot
  trace it.

  I have upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 which was a clean install. My
  keyboard language-settings (in the login screen as well) were
  norwegian and greek. However when I installed the 12.04 version my
  keyboard-layout was changed to english but the keyboard layout manager
  was showing norwegian.

  On the keyboard-layout settings I put the english(US) layout and I
  removed greek and norwegian. Typed a bit and then put norwegian and
  greek and I removed the english (US) again and chose the Alt-Shift
  combination for changing layouts.  What I get is an unchangable
  english(US) layout.

  Important note: My keyboard is US-keyboard. I mean the hardware.

  P.S. The ubuntu-bug system has a serious bug. When I was looking about
  the bug on Google I could find the launchpad relevant subject. I
  wanted to use the ubuntu-bug system in order to report my system's
  details. Then I could not find the subject again through the launchpad
  search engine and I was forced to report it as a new problem

On Natty, my problem is somewhat similar. I have set gnome-power-manager
icon policy to "Low" (only show battery icon on panel when its low) &
"use_time_for_policy" to "False" & finally modified thresholds %(20=low,
15=critical battery, 10=critical action).

- At 20%. it shows 'low battery warning' notification along with low 
battery indicator on panel but only when i am NOT watching
   a movie full-screen. And sometimes it doesn't show the notification or 
the indicator at all, even if i am not watching a movie.

- At 15%, it doesn't show anything.

- At 10%, low (or critical?) dialog box appears. At this point,  if I run 
gnome-power-statistics it shows 0% power remaining 
  (which might be another bug). Since critical action has already been 
triggered, it suspends the machine regardless what i select 
   on the dialog box.  

On 12.04, at 20%, low battery notification is consistent,  but again only when 
I am NOT watching a movie full-screen.The rest are
same as Michael described.

  Low and Critical battery warnings show at the same time, Laptop

Bug description:
  When my battery gets low (I'm not sure of the actual %age value), 2
  dialogue boxes show, one for 'low battery', and the other for
  'critical battery'. Leaving these dialogue boxes open, I quickly rush
  over and plug the charger in, however, regardless of weather I click
  the 'X', 'Cancel' or 'Ok' (I cant remember the actual button captions,
  but they're similar) The laptop hibernates anyway.

  The low battery notification in the top right works fine at around
  15%, but I usually forget to do anything until I'm interrupted by the
  2 dialogues, but by then it's too late, and the laptop will hibernate.

  I have also tried to edit the low and critical battery percentage
  triggers in dconf (or gconf?) without success, the low and critical
  values were set to different levels, however it appears that the
  change was not recognised by gnome-power-manager.

  What I Expected:
  ==
  - At 15%, the 'Low battery' warning would show in the top right.

  - At 10%, A 'Low battery' dialogue should show, offering the user to 
'Suspend' or 'Do nothing'
If the user presses 'Suspend', then suspend
If the user presses 'Do Nothing' then do nothing (i.e. don't 
hibernate)

  - At 5%, Show a 'Critical battery' dialogue, with a countdown showing
  the time until the computer will begin hibernation.

  However, the dialogue should automatically dismiss if the laptop is
  plugged into AC while either dialogue is being shown.

  What Happened Instead:

  1) The battery level was around 15%.
  2) I Ignored the 'low battery warning' notification in the top right.
  3) When the battery got to around 10%, The 2 'low' and 'critical' dialogue 
boxes appeared together.
  4) I tried to close the dialogues without the laptop entering hibernation.
  5) The laptop went into hibernate regardless of what I do.

  When I click the power indicator icon, and the "Battery (h:mm left)"
  menu entry, the "Power Statistics" window opens and shows info about
  power, battery and so on. But when I do the same a second, third, and
  subsequent times, the Power Statistics window opens with an empty
  panel, i.e. without content. See the two screenshots attached below
  (first-time normal window and second-time empty window).

  The behavior is always consistent, across kernels (from *-18 to
  current one, *-20).

  This is a fresh install using the precise beta 1 image.
  Using Ubuntu 12.04 Precise Pangolin Beta 1 (64 bits) updated as of today. 
Computer is an HP Pavilion dm4-2120ss laptop with intel core i3 2330M CPU

Confirming; we even have a nice fix for this at the NetworkManager level
via connectivity checking, but it was new and disruptive enough to not
make it in 12.04 -- we're going to be enabling this in the development
release very very soon.

Also confirming for update-manager: I've run into the same issue before
as well. update-manager/apt ought to distinguish between the type of
data being recovered by the downloads, and have a way to gracefully
handle these evil captive portals.

  However when I try and use this font for 'heading 2', I seem to be
  allowed to type 'bold' in to the typeface field ('Paragraph Style:

  "This font style will be simulated or the closest matching style will

  be simulated, I expect that Heading 2 is now a bold version of 'URW
  Chancery L', albeit simulated.

I can confirm this bug with libgtksourceview2.0 on Ubuntu 12.04, gedit 3.4.1.

Tested with another users, and the same problem, but after upgrading KDE
to 4.8.3 and Clementine to the dev branch, media keys work again. So in

Just to point out that mentioned workaround doesn't work on some systems
because LANG environment variable has uppercase letters on UTF8 part and
menu cache file has lowercase letters in UTF8 part. For example:

desktop.${LANG}.cache

translates into:

desktop.en_US.UTF-8.cache

and system expects:

desktop.en_US.utf8.cache

cache file name (notice UTF8 and utf8 part).

It is best to manually go to /usr/share/applications/ and to look for
cache file to be sure about cache file name and to adjust part of
workaround command accordingly, at least thats what I had to do on my
lucid 32 bit.

   Manually created menu item in Gnome disappears from Gnome, Ubuntu 10.04 (64 
bit).after the system is rebooted.
  Menu items in Gnome should not go away one the system is shutdown and started 
again.
   
  Here are the steps to reproduce the problem :

  Steps 0-8 just create a new menu item.

 1. Start with a newly installed Ubuntu 10.04 (64 bit). Gnome.
 2. Select menu System ->Preferences->Main Menu.
 3. Select “Applications” on the left.
 4. Click on “New Menu” button.
 5. Enter “gksudo nautilus” in both fields. Click”OK”.
 6. Select the “gksudo nautilus” menu.
 7. Click “New Item”.
 8. Again (just for simplicity) in all fields enter “gksudo nautilus”. A new
  item is created. You could also see that the new menu and the item are
  available in the Applications menu and work fine.
The goal is to make this new menu entry available for all users. As
  expected the steps above create three files under my home directory:
   1. ~/.local/share/applications/alacarte-made.desktop
   2. ~/.local/share/desktop-directories/alacarte-made.directory
   3. ~/.config/menus/applications.menu
  They now should be moved to a common location which is accessible
  for all the users.
 9. In accordance with the spec
  (http://standards.freedesktop.org/menu-spec/1.0/), move the
  alacarte-made.desktop file to directory /usr/share/applications.
10. Everything still looks and works fine, just as expected. But here is the
  problem.
11. If you now reboot your 64 bit system the menu item would not show up any
  longer. The only way I found to see the menu entry again is to open the
  /usr/share/applications/alacarte-made.desktop file and to add a space and save
  it ( this works only till the next reboot). I tried to 'touch' the file but it
  did not help.
12. The above steps work fine on my 32 bit Ubuntu 10.04 or in KDE. In both 
of
  these cases the menu item stays there after the system is rebooted.

installing the "libreoffice" package.  Here is a revised suggestion
around that, which also would require a standard summary of the issues
on a web page somewhere:

 javaldx: LibreOffice could not find a Java Runtime Environment. That's
fine if you don't rely on features that require Java like some wizards,
extensions and databases. If you do rely on those features, install the
full "libreoffice" package from the Ubuntu Software Center, which will
pull in Java and libreoffice-base.  See http://wiki.ubuntu.org/ for

  LibreOffice Base 3.5.2.2 freezes when exporting a very large table to

  LibreOffice Base 3.5.2.2 and Calc freeze after ~14 mins when exporting data 
of a very large (~100 MB) table from an embedded HSQLDB to a LibreOffice Calc 
spreadsheet. For this, I am using the procedure outlined in LibreOffice Help.  
I can move the cursor after the LibreOffice freeze though.
  Top showed a processor load of 102% on average. Memory usage increased slowly 
from ~9% to 14%.
  Exporting a small (~10 kB) table works all right though.
  For closer analyzing this bug please let me know if I need to install the DEB 
program package libreoffice-dbg and repeat the export,
  or what should I do to support debugging.

may be backported in the future). This only affects IPv6-enabled network where 
the kernel expects to setup a default route by itself and doesn't play nice 
with something else modifying the routes.

For me the keys are working. The issue is that it does not cycle through
all of the windows. Only the previous window is available. If you have
more than two windows opens they will have an icon in the popup, but you
can not get to them. You can only cycle between window #1 and #2.

Even worse, when cycling back to window #1, it is not outlined, and the
popup dissapears. It is very confusing. It sort of makes sense in that
you are back to an unchanged state, but that is not what Alt-tab does.
Alt-tab will outline window #1 and leave the popup until the Alt key is
released, so I expected Alt-` to do the same.

Same issue on TravelMate TM8372TG-5454G50Mnbb. Unfortunately Steffen's
work-around didn't work for me.

I also tried following the instructions at
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiDocs/Driver/bcm43xx#b43_-
_No_Internet_access but when I returned to Additional Drivers b43 didn't
show up.

What did work was manually building and installing the Broadcom hybrid
wireless driver available from here:
http://www.broadcom.com/support/802.11/linux_sta.php

The README.txt is very clearly written. One caveat though: Running
`make` I received a compiler error about 'ndo_set_multicast_list' not
being a recognised field or something. An internet search turned up that
all you have to do is change 'ndo_set_multicast_list' to
'ndo_set_rx_mode' in the code (src/wl/sys/wl_linux.c, line 388). It's
really very easy and it compiles fine after this, and you can continue
following the README to install your newly compiled kernel module.

One (more) caveat: it may be my imagination but it appears as if my
signal strength is now *slightly* less than it was under 11.10. Perhaps
it's the same though and something has just changed in the way it's
reported, like what happened with an iOS update a while ago and got a
lot of people upset.

Anyway, if anyone else can't get Steffen's method to work I this proves
useful.

I have the same error. Installed 12.04 with one monitor, then replaced the
monitor with a diff one...
Using the normal video drivers, nothing special.
I did have to rename the host. I edited hosts and hostname.

Bug description:
Today, after reinstall my nvidia drivers, I started to get an error
after X starts, before lightdm login screen, saying thar my computer
was in low graphics mode and asking me what to do. Whatever option I
choose, the screen backs to the terminal.

I thought for hours that I had a X driver problems, and tried a lot of
drivers, nouveau, nvidia-current, nvidia-current-updates... No
success. After search a little bit on the internet, I found this site,
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=1970586 saying that after
change to gdm the problem were gone. So I did, everything is working
fine, with gdm + unity-2d-shell.

  Shutting down the computer using the menue does not work always correct. It

It's actually Alt+` (backtick), or rather it's Alt+$the_key_over_tab,
and it works here (it's a metacity feature, btw). There's some more
information that will help:

- keyboard layout
- character given by the key in a terminal / text editor
- xev output when pressing that key

There's some nuance here. This bug is GTK-related. If your emacs daemon
is not compiled with gtk support (either a terminal-only version of
compiled with the lucid toolkit), then you will not see this bug. Even
if your emacs is compiled with gtk, you will still not see the bug
unless you actually create (and then destroy) an emacs X window that
uses GTK, so doing emacsclient -nw should not trigger the bug. But doing
emacsclient -c with the same daemon later should still cause a crash.

  I am trying to start using emacs --daemon and emacsclient, so that I
  can easily have multiple emacs windows sharing a single process.
  However, my attempts are frustrated by the fact that when I use
  "emacsclient -c" to create a new window in an exising emacs session,
  emacs crashes about 1 in 5 times. It seems completely random.

  Here's what I've been using to reproduce this:

  x=0; emacs23 -Q --daemon &>/dev/null; while emacsclient -c
  &>/dev/null; do x=$(( $x + 1 )); done; echo "Created $x windows before
  crash."

  
  That will start the daemon, and then keep spawning new emacs windows as long 
as the daemon is running. Just keep closing the windows, and new ones will pop 
up. Every time I do this command, I get a different number of windows before 
emacs crashes. On my last five tries, I have gotten 7, 17, 12, 18, and 24 
windows. Hence my claim of randomness.

Ccampora. I tried that work around.. and my /etc/resolv.conf. it doesnt
show 127.0.0.1it shows 192.168.1.1  but the problem still exists...
I am at a loss here.. Here are the contants of my resolv.conf file..

  I just updated to Ubuntu 12.04. 
  After the update I cannot resolve hostnames reliably: 
  I use Konsole in Unity. There sometimes the DNS resolving works fine and 
suddenly after two commands or so it fails for the same address. 

  E.g. I ping a machine without DNS-Suffix (the suffix is shown in my network 
config correctly aside 3 valid nameserver IPs) and everything works fine. Then 
I try to log into the machine with the same address via ssh and I get a "Name 
or service not known". 
  Trying again, it works with a fully qualified name containing the suffix. I 
also had cases, when the IP wasn't resolved although I put in the fully 
qualified name. When I am more lucky, it starts working again with machine 
names only (without suffix, which is configured and worked perfectly up to now)

  Is there probably a bug in the new Ubuntu Version?
