[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828883] Re: update-software-center crashed with ImportError in /usr/share/software-center/softwarecenter/utils.py: No module named gmenu
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy. Mike S - Not disagreeing a bit. There are also other significant flaws in FF4 and up (dysfunctional default UI, rapid release cycle, the 'fix' for bug 586234, inability to clone a tab). I don't think it is necessarily a reflection on all software developers, not even on all who work on FF. My guess is - and that is true for commercial software as well - some folks with a far too big ego make the decisions and they want things to be their way. The UI change that nobody wanted - still there. The rapid releases that still break add-ons and that caused hundred thousands of complaints - still there. All the stuff that works fine in FF3.x and was broken for no reason in FF4 - still there. I think that up until FF3 Mozilla was close to the community of users and made a browser that users loved. Then something changed, a decision was made to copy Chrome and entirely ignore the wishes of the user community. What Mozilla needs to do is replace the decision makers with folks that care about the users more than themselves. FF turned into the materialized ego trip of a select few and the result is unhappy users and continuously dropping market share. I really wonder how the decisions are made which bugs to fix first after covering security issues. My guess is that new (and buggy) features trumps fixing bugs filed a decade ago. And the memory leaks are still there, but that is a common occurrence in FF since version 1. As far as sharing a profile is concerned, I think that it is even more a need for Thunderbird. You wrote that you are a developer. I know it is a common response that gets used too often, but maybe you can take on this issue and fix it? I wish I could, but I am just a QA buff and a regular user aka someone who the FF folks give a damn about. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93546 Title: [upstream] Address data sources missing Status in BlankOn Linux: New Status in LibreOffice Productivity Suite: Confirmed Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser: Confirmed Status in The OpenOffice.org Suite: Invalid Status in “firefox-3.0” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “openoffice.org” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Over on the Ubuntu user's mailing list someone asked a question about Thunderbird address data sources. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 93546]
For goodness sake. TEN YEARS and an issue is still "new". In a commercial environment someone would be sacked. You cant run Firefox in a remote desktop session or under Citrix if another session already has Firefox open. This is a pretty big defect. Frankly, this is the achilles heel of "community" software. Lots of voluntary work on building a Ferrari ... but because it is not managed as a consumer product ... you cant drive it on Sundays between 2 and 3pm. The thing that really ticks me off after 20 years in the industry is techs nodding their heads and saying "yep, that's to be expected". Sorry, just because you can come up with an explanation doesn't mean "its OK". Any workaround is better than closing umpteen "duplicates" and leaving an issue open for 10 years. Come back in 2050 and this will probably still be open. Am I really the only one who is ashamed to say I'm a software developer? This is exactly the sort of thing that sees software guys get mocked by business people (well actually anyone for that matter)... and fair enough too. Firefox as a browser is in my opinion the best (except for this particular problem) ... all the man hours that some extremely talented and selfless people have put into the tool is amazing .. only to be let down by a failure to look at the whole... as a tool used by people ... to address real usability issues ... which after all is the point. Do you know that in real engineering disciplines people construct whole buildings? that stay standing? that can be used all year round? That take technology and engineering and apply it to _people_? that can be constructed in days? to budget?!! ... such a revolutionary concept. While "db" has been very generous with his time to provide his script I don't think this will help my grandmother. Yep, Im an angry old man .. the thing that makes me a sad old man is that this sort of failure is why open source and community software hasn't quite conquered the world how many predicted. Instead a commercial layer appears in between .. a layer that "tweaks" all the effort of selfless individuals to get to an actual product that delivers... and that commercial layer then chuckles it all the way back to the bank. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to libreoffice in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/93546 Title: [upstream] Address data sources missing Status in BlankOn Linux: New Status in LibreOffice Productivity Suite: Confirmed Status in The Mozilla Firefox Browser: Confirmed Status in The OpenOffice.org Suite: Invalid Status in “firefox-3.0” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in “libreoffice” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “openoffice.org” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: Binary package hint: openoffice.org Over on the Ubuntu user's mailing list someone asked a question about Thunderbird address data sources. hello same problem here. workaround with "dns=dnsmasq" did not work. It is not serious for a LTS to have a fully broken DNS and no fix available. Will go to linux mint. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/989900 Title: DNS Resolve Problems in Ubuntu 12.04 Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I just updated to Ubuntu 12.04. After the update I cannot resolve hostnames reliably: I use Konsole in Unity. There sometimes the DNS resolving works fine and suddenly after two commands or so it fails for the same address. E.g. I ping a machine without DNS-Suffix (the suffix is shown in my network config correctly aside 3 valid nameserver IPs) and everything works fine. Then I try to log into the machine with the same address via ssh and I get a "Name or service not known". Trying again, it works with a fully qualified name containing the suffix. I also had cases, when the IP wasn't resolved although I put in the fully qualified name. When I am more lucky, it starts working again with machine names only (without suffix, which is configured and worked perfectly up to now) Is there probably a bug in the new Ubuntu Version? --- ApportVersion: 2.0.1-0ubuntu7 Architecture: amd64 DistroRelease: Ubuntu 12.04 IfupdownConfig: auto lo iface lo inet loopback InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 12.04 LTS "Precise Pangolin" - Release amd64 (20120425) IpRoute: default via 192.168.1.1 dev wlan0 proto static 169.254.0.0/16 dev wlan0 scope link metric 1000 192.168.1.0/24 dev wlan0 proto kernel scope link src 192.168.1.2 metric 2 NetworkManager.state: [main] NetworkingEnabled=true WirelessEnabled=true WWANEnabled=true WimaxEnabled=true NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia Package: network-manager 0.9.4.0-0ubuntu4 PackageArchitecture: amd64 ProcEnviron: TERM=xterm PATH=(custom, no user) LANG=en_US.UTF-8 SHELL=/bin/bash ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 3.2.0-24.38-generic 3.2.16 RfKill: 0: phy0: Wireless LAN Soft blocked: no Hard blocked: no Tags: precise Uname: Linux 3.2.0-24-generic x86_64 UpgradeStatus: No upgrade log present (probably fresh install) UserGroups: adm cdrom dip lpadmin netdev plugdev sambashare sudo mtime.conffile..etc.NetworkManager.NetworkManager.conf: 2012-05-09T05:01:02.241358 nmcli-con: NAME UUID TYPE TIMESTAMPTIMESTAMP-REAL AUTOCONNECT READONLY DBUS-PATH Wired connection 1a76f352c-6e8c-49c7-bc05-b890445abb22 802-3-ethernet1336943434 Sun 13 May 2012 05:10:34 PM EDTyes no /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Settings/1 Ladner Computer Repair L.N.A 47560d22-54ec-491b-b90f-a41535d69f00 802-11-wireless 1337213171 Wed 16 May 2012 08:06:11 PM EDTyes no /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Settings/0 nmcli-dev: DEVICE TYPE STATE DBUS-PATH wlan0 802-11-wireless connected /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/1 eth0 802-3-ethernetunavailable /org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/Devices/0 nmcli-nm: RUNNING VERSIONSTATE NET-ENABLED WIFI-HARDWARE WIFI WWAN-HARDWARE WWAN running 0.9.4.0connected enabled enabled enabledenabled disabled To manage notifications about this bug go to: https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/989900/+subscriptions -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp

** Package changed: mountall (Ubuntu) => nautilus (Ubuntu) -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637979 Title: Removeable filesystems are not automatically mounted during boot. Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Opinion Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “udev” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: If a removable drive (such as a USB flash drive) is plugged in, it typically is automounted by Gnome. It is not automounted if the device is already plugged in during boot. Story: A user plugs in a flash drive and starts working. He gets on the plane, so he shuts down the system. Once the plane lands, the user boots up the system - the drive is no longer mounted. This violates the principle of least surprise. The user is forced to re-mount the drive through the disk utility or unplug and replug it (which can be a challenge depending on where the device is plugged in). I'd like to avoid unfriending these people (they _are_ in my network) but unfortunately without doing so really drops the signal to noise ratio of the stream presented by Gwibber. I'd have to guess you are constrained by the API presented by Facebook, but if there's any way to query whether the user has actually requested certain posts (or more to the point, all posts by a given user) be omitted then it'd be terrific to use that information to not present those posts in Gwibber. LibreOffice can attempt to repair the file. The corrupt document could be the result of document manipulation or of structural document damage due to data transmission. ... Should LibreOffice repair the file? [Yes] [No] >> If I select "Yes," I get another dialog saying "The file 'x.odt' could not be repaired and therefore cannot be opened." I click "Ok" and another window appears saying "General Error." If I attempt to open the same file again, I get an error message saying: << The document 'x.odt' is locked for editing by: Unknown User Open document read-only or open a copy of the document for editing. >> If I select either of these options, it goes back into the "The file . . . is corrupt. . . ." I can open the files just fine on AbiWord. I was also able to edit things in LibreOffice by opening them in AbiWord then copying them into an empty document in LibreOffice, but then when I saved, closed, and tried to open again I got the same problem. I also found that when I was trying to save these documents last night, it would tell me that (I didn't write this down so I'm constructing it from memory) it couldn't write the data due to insufficient user privileges and that it couldn't write some xml file. I tried to save in another folder and it worked without problems. Then I moved it from that folder into the original folder without problems. So there is no write permissions problem here. (I thought maybe this was because I was writing in an Ubuntu One synched folder, but this was only a problem some of the time and only with LibreOffice, not other programs.) I just upgraded to the new LibreOffice and am having the same problems. So I'm working with AbiWord for today and hoping I can open my files with LibreOffice eventually. Thanks. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 637979] [NEW] Removeable filesystems are not automatically mounted during boot.
You have been subscribed to a public bug: If a removable drive (such as a USB flash drive) is plugged in, it typically is automounted by Gnome. ** Affects: hundredpapercuts Importance: Undecided Status: Opinion ** Affects: nautilus (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Affects: udev (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: Confirmed ** Tags: apport-collected maverick regression-release -- Removeable filesystems are not automatically mounted during boot. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/637979 You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. -- Mailing list: https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages Post to : desktop-packages@lists.launchpad.net Unsubscribe : https://launchpad.net/~desktop-packages More help : https://help.launchpad.net/ListHelp
[Desktop-packages] [Bug 687635] Re: No easy way to make Samba shares permanent
Not sure why this was assigned to mountall; mountall only parses /etc/fstab at boot time, it certainly isn't going to be responsible for writing to it. Reassigning to nautilus, which I guess is what would have to provide an option to convert gvfs mounts into boot-time mounts by adding them to the /etc/fstab. (This is probably a bad idea, but I guess that's a decision for the desktop team.) ** Package changed: mountall (Ubuntu) => gvfs (Ubuntu) ** Changed in: gvfs (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Wishlist -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gvfs in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/687635 Title: No easy way to make Samba shares permanent Status in Ayatana Design: New Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts: Invalid Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu: New Status in “samba” package in Ubuntu: Won't Fix Bug description: NAS are becoming a popular add-on to people networks, used for every purpose from backing up data to let it be available to multiple PCs on the same (W)LAN. This makes no easy task to save files on daily basis since there's no easy way to browse the drive from many windows (i.e. save or open windows) except going inside .gvfs folder which is not user friendly. Also, these drives will not be mounted on boot, so in order to use them users must go through the Network window every time (or edit by themselves fstab). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1001687] Re: package gir1.2-unity-5.0 5.10.0-0ubuntu1 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess dpkg-deb --control returned error exit status 2
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu better. It seems that there was an error on your system when trying to install a particular package. Please execute the following command, as it will clear your package cache, in a terminal: sudo apt-get clean Then try performing the update again. This will likely resolve your issue, but the failure could be caused by filesystem or memory corruption. So please also run a fsck on your filesystem(s) and a memory test. Thanks in advance! Thanks you for the prompt reply and your patience. I tried two computers, my main and my test laptop both with the same versions you are using and bookmark sorting works by default... The only possibility I can think of now is some artifact of the upgrade, configuration, or plug-in issue - you can try running Firefox in Safe Mode, or under a new profile (e.g. new user or the "guest" account). See the section on Firefox debugging: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/MozillaTeam/Bugs?action=show&redirect=DebuggingFirefox#Try_running_in_safe_mode In any case, I'll update the description and set the bug back to new as I cannot find the cause of the bug at the moment. ** Changed in: firefox (Ubuntu) Status: Incomplete => New -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/997876 Title: No manual sort for bookmarks Status in “firefox” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I used to be able to manually sort my bookmarks however I wanted. In order to avoid an update of the package to the Precise version you need to put lightdm on hold: https://help.ubuntu.com/community/PinningHowto#Introduction_to_Holding_Packages Note that this is not an ideal solution as you will not receive security updates for this package. By putting it on hold you are assuming manual control over it, so it is your responsibility to update it manually when needed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to lightdm in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/976124 Title: lightdm multiseat: no login possible Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in “lightdm” source package in Precise: Confirmed Bug description: I am testing a multiseat setup with precise: One XServer is running on intel graphics card, a second one is running on a DisplayLink (usb video) device. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 941718] Re: Some Keyboard Layout Options not working in 12.04
I can confirm this is still an issue in 12.04 release, x64. (Just in case anyone was wondering.) [Desktop-packages] [Bug 913856] Re: NetworkManager periodically writes to the disk causing wakeups
I encountered the same problem, but used a different solution: make /var/lib/NetworkManager a symlink to /var/run/NetworkManager (and create the corresponding directory). /var/run is a tmpfs filesystem, so it won't generate hard disk wake-ups. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to network-manager in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/913856 Title: NetworkManager periodically writes to the disk causing wakeups Status in “network-manager” package in Ubuntu: Fix Released Bug description: Network Manager is periocially creating dirty pages that are being written back to disk and causing uncessary drive wakeups. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1001570] Re: Regresson: Unable to import WMF images into GIMP, or convert them using wmf2xxx
I use both Ubuntu and OSX, found that right-clicking on the image in LibreOffice (in OSX) and selecting "Save Graphics" allows one to choose another format. I know, I know. What would be really useful is if I helped with a fix for *Ubuntu* - but I have a deadline, and needed a workaround today fast. Actually, the client sent me a bunch of .docx files with the wmf images inside, so I unzipped them and opened the /word/media/image*.wmf files in LibreOffice. When you open the wmfs this way, right-clicking yields a "Save as Picture" dialog, instead of "Save Graphics." I have an inkling of where the problem might be; after I've put out my fires, I'll look and see what turns up. After 19 months, a bit more time doesn't seem like it'll hurt that much. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gimp in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1001570 Title: Regresson: Unable to import WMF images into GIMP, or convert them using wmf2xxx Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I have put the package on this bug as GIMP, but seeing the range of problems (described below), it is probably something else. There was, at least, a work-around, in that the tools wmf2xxx could convert the files into a different format (e.g. EPS), which GIMP could import. 4. But with Precise 12.04, even that work-around fails. MORE INFORMATION: * When trying to open a file with GIMP, GIMP incorrectly recognises the WMF dimensions as having dimensions of -1x-1 (see attached screen- shot), and having negative X and Y ratios. GIMP will allow you to correct the width and height, but not the resolution, making importing impossible. * wmf2xxx fails with error code 1 but no error message. * convert (from ImageMagick) fails with error code 1 and the message: failed to scan file `t2.wmf' @ error/wmf.c/ReadWMFImage/186. * Surprisingly, Libre Office Writer and Draw are able to import WMF files. Unfortunately, Libre Office crops the images, so that they anyway cannot be used. This regression has been hanging around for 19 months, and really needs fixing. The only remaining work-around is to either boot into Windows or run 10.04 in a virtual machine, neither of which is an acceptable solution. I'm not seeing what you do but I did uninstall British, Australian and other English spell check dictionaries because I felt I didn't need them. I only have the English_US dictionary. Note that Language Settings warns me that I'm missing those deleted English dictionaries but my system still functions correctly. For example, US English has "color" and British English has "colour." In my case I want US. If I look at Tools-> Set Language-> I see a list with English on top followed by six specific English languages and Turkish. If I select "English (United States)" I get the dictionary I want but only for this Gedit session. There is no way I can find to always use US English so every time I open a Gedit session and want to spell check I have to specifically select Language. I attempted to delete the other dictionaries in the Synaptic Package Manger but since the languages are part of an umbrella package I'd create problems the next time I wanted to upgrade to a new Ubuntu release. I also tried the configuration editor but no parameter for language was available. I can't recall having to specify language with each Gedit session in past Ubuntu releases. There needs to be some way to set the default Gedit language for the spell checker plugin. My expectation is that once a language is selected it should stay the language until I manually change it. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 994243] Re: cannot print to file after selecting preview in print settings
I have a similar problem after the upgrade to 12.04. I can't even print (even if I don't do a preview first) ... but only when I do *some* of the pages, like e.g. just page 1. If I print or preview the entire document, both work fine. I'm attaching the results of error messages output by the printer diagnostic wizard. I have an Epson Style NX215 with no special custom drivers which worked out of the box. I tried removing and reisntalling evince, no luck. ** Attachment added: "Print errors after diagnostic" https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/994243/+attachment/3154129/+files/print_errors.txt -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to evince in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/994243 Title: cannot print to file after selecting preview in print settings Status in “evince” package in Ubuntu: Triaged Bug description: I open up a document with evince and try to print some of the pages to a pdf file.
