Maybe this is a stupid question, but why is a DKMS failure not
considered "fatal" enough to prevent the kernel upgrade from taking
place, or at least updating grub?

  Whenever I try to publish to facebook I get the error:

  "You have already logged in and out of Facebook during this Shotwell
  session.  To continue publishing to Facebook, quit and restart
  Shotwell, then try publishing again."

  No matter how many times I try this it happens,

  I start shotwell, select the pics to publish, File - Publish, login
  into Facebook, then choose options and choose publish and the error
  appears.  Happens everytime I do it.

It looks like we are all having the same issue:

...and it would make sense if the heart of the problem lies with Xorg
server, seeing as people with NVIDIA and AMD ATI cards are both
experiencing the same issue.

Bug description:
  I'm using Ubuntu 14.04 64bit, after install nvidia binary driver
  331.89 from Additional Drivers application then reboot, it shows black
  screen, no login window, I even can't use ctrl+alt+F2 to switch to
  text mode, then I reboot and go to recovery mode, use 'prime-select
  intel' to switch to intel GPU and reboot, everything is fine, but as
  soon as I switch to nvidia GPU, still same issue.

  OS: Ubuntu 14.04 64bit
  Laptop: HP ENVY 15t Nvidia GeForce GT 740M + Intel HD 4600
  Desktop: Unity
  Kernel: 3.13.0

Bug description:
  I have Nvidia Optimus GT415M hardware on my laptop.

  I've upgraded my Ubuntu 14.10 where everything was working fine with
  Nvidia Optimus  to Ubuntu 15.04 and now I cannot login. After I type
  the password login screen comes back again.

  I did complete reinstall of NVidia packages and installed new
  nvidia-346 package from Ubuntu repo.

  Looking at Xorg.0.log I see this message:

Title:
  No hardware acceleration out-of-the-box with Intel HD GPU

Bug description:
  I don't know whether I am reporting this against the right package.

  I have an acer laptop with these GPUs:
  - GPU0: Intel HD Graphics 4000 (M)
  - GPU1: NVIDIA GeForce GT 710M

  with Optimus technology. I know getting the NVidia card to work is as
  complicated as hell, so I gave up on that.

  However, I expect the Intel GPU to work at its full potential out of
  the box.

  Instead, I ran several benchmark test tools and they perform very poorly, 
indicating that everything is being rendered by software.
  On moderately complex 3D graphics tests I get frame rates around 18fps, while 
on the most trivial tests (like a rotating horse with no texture whatsoever) I 
get 60fps at most.

  By googling around I've found some how-to's for getting hardware
  acceleration to work, but they are either unclear or incomplete or
  they contraddict one another, and none of them is official.

  I shouldn't be supposed to do perform complicated installations and
  configurations. Support for all the available hardware acceleration
  power, at least on the integrated GPU, should work right out of the
  box.

  I confirm this bug with my AudioFirePre8.

  I generate this bug in the way below:
  1.Prepare reliable MIDI capture device. I utilize E-MU 0404 USB with 
snd-usb-audio.ko (ALSA).
  2.Connect hardware MIDI-out of AudioFirePre8 and hardware MIDI-in port of 
E-MU 0404 USB
  3.Prepare reliable MIDI playback and capture software. I utilize "kmidimon" 
for playback and "amidi" for capture.
    Using "kmidimon" and "a2j" togather, software MIDI playback port is 
connected to jackd's MIDI subsystem.
    "amidi" can directly listen to hardware MIDI-in port of EMU 0404 USB with 
ALSA's MIDI subsystem.
  4.Run jackd with Firewire backend at 88.2 or 96.0kHz and connect necessary 
ports.
    See "connection.png".
  5.Playback MIDI events to AudioFirePre8 and capture it from E-MU 0404 USB.
    I use "control.mid" as playback MIDI data. It includes control change 
events of 00 control in channel 1.
    The captured data is converted to text data, result_.log.
  6.Compare playback and capture MIDI bytes.

  When MIDI playback runs at 44.1 and 48.0 kHz, the capture data is the
  same as the playback but they are different at 88.2 and 96.0kHz.

  And at 88.2 and 96kHz, the capture data varies in each playback.

  This bug also appear in current upstream, svn revision 2299.

Reproducable by running:
(on VT1)
$ sudo mir_demo_server
(on VT2)
$ sudo chown $USER.$USER /var/run/user/$PID/mir_socket
$ XMir :1 -rootless &
(switch to VT1 then back to VT2)
$ DISPLAY=:1 xeyes
(XMir crashes)

The rootless code is kind of hacky, so I'd definitely use non rootless
mode until it's better understood / fixed.

Bug description:
  Ted has run into problems trying to integrate XMir with Unity8. When
  he starts an app, XMir aborts in compCopyWindow. (Log attached)

  This seems to be because compCopyWindow has been called before
  compConfigNotify (which in turn call compReallocPixmap, and set
  cw->oldx to valid values). This might be an initialisation order
  problem in XMir.

  I am experiencing the same symptoms as described in
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-
  screensaver/+bug/586528. This bug report is new on request.

  I run Xubuntu with XFCE, xscreensaver and Light Locker. Recently,
  whenever I log back (twice, once through locker and once through
  xscreensaver), the X11 applications are not accepting keyboard input.
  I can switch desktops using keyboard shortcuts, though. What fixes the
  issue for me is switching into a Terminal window. Then the keyboard
  input start working.

I have the same problem and I always thought it was the NVIDIA drivers
themselves.

Tried all the newer versions from "xorg-edgers", as well as the latest
upstream Linux kernels (4.x+) and none of it helped.

Finally came across the NVIDIA devtalk post linked in the description of
this bug report and then found this bug report itself.

The workaround mentioned by Rene works for me.

I want to help fix this, but I have no idea where to start.
So I'm just going to start with the X.org dev patch that Aaron made and maybe 
get in contact with him.

  I have Nvidia Optimus GT415M hardware on my laptop.

  I've upgraded my Ubuntu 14.10 where everything was working fine with
  Nvidia Optimus  to Ubuntu 15.04 and now I cannot login. After I type
  the password login screen comes back again.

  I did complete reinstall of NVidia packages and installed new
  nvidia-346 package from Ubuntu repo.

  Looking at Xorg.0.log I see this message:

Kernel 3.19.0-26.28 was pushed as a security update to all Ubuntu users today 
(it is no longer in the, disabled by default,  "proposed" repository).
This means all FGLRX users on Vivid (and those that installed 14.04.2) will 
lose their graphical environment as soon as they reboot.

The only workaround is to select the former kernel in Grub. Patching the
DKMS module manually is possible, but we can't expect the typical Ubuntu
user to do such a thing.

I don't know who is to blame, but I hope I'm not the only one to think
this is a serious situation.

Digging into this I discovered that package_hook from apport writes a
Package key but does not include the version of the package with that
key.  Apparently, I fixed the same thing 18 months ago with the
kernel_oops file.

apport (2.13.2-0ubuntu4) trusty; urgency=medium

  * data/kernel_oops: include the package version in addition to the
name

Investigating the matter further it, report.write() is called with
new_only=True which means that even though the package version
information has been collected (by add_package_info) we do not write it
to the report. Naturally, this is rather confusing and means that fixes
to data collection in apport may not appear in all reports e.g. if we
change how origin information is calculated (which appears in the value
for Package) we need to change package_hook and kernel_oops for the
updated origin information.

A patch has been suggested
Fall back to kernel 4.0 and it should work again

Hello,

I have some further information which I attach hoping it will help to
solve the problem.

I ran strace against the Software Center's PID (5211) for a while
(twice, waiting a couple of minutes between the two traces). The output
is in the files strace_software_center.txt and
strace_software_center.2.txt.

>From how I understand the output, the software_center (PID 5211) seems
to be doing some inter-process communication on file descriptors 6 and
7. The processe's file descriptors (found in /proc/5211/fd/) are also
attached as well as an output of netstat -np (showing sockets).

Title:
Installation in Ubuntu Software Center does not progress

Bug description:
Hello,

I have upgraded from Ubuntu 10.04 to Ubuntu 14.04.

Now I would like to install the GNOME desktop and I used the "Ubuntu
Software Center" for this purpose. I choose the Gnome desktop package
and started the installation.

The installation is now running for over 7 hours, and the progress
bar in the Software Center window stays in the middle position while
the "progress" icon keeps turning around.

When I display processes with top, I see software-center, compiz and
Xorg as the top CPU consumers with 5-10% each. Overall CPU usage is
between 10 and 30 percent (displayed with vmstat) and there is no
significant swapping or other I/O activity. So I wonder what the
process (softwar-center) is actually doing / what it is waiting for.

My machine is a HP laptop EliteBook8530w, with two Intel Core2 Duo @
2.66 GHz and 3.8 GByte of main memory.

For the moment I'll keep Software Center running, in case you need any
further information from the running system. Please also advise me if
I can safely terminate (kill) Software Center, without leaving the
system in an inconsistent state.

  On my i7 2.80 GH, 8 GB RAM HP desktop tower, Ubuntu 14.04 has crashed
  regularly, roughly every 10 minutes, and on reboot gives several
  different executable paths starting with Xorg (ie usr7bin/Xorg). This
  has happened when I am running in LibreOffice 4.2.1 or even About Me.
