Title:
hp-plugin hangs at invisible sudo prompt after download of plugin
  files

Status in hplip package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After downloading the plugin files with the recommended method and
accepting the license agreement the installation routine hangs
(doesn't proceed over multiple hours without any CPU or I/O load)
after output `Number of files to install: 42` which is likely to be
caused by a spawned process with the `cmdline`
  `/usr/bin/sudo/usr/bin/pythoninstallPlugin.py` which might request the
user's `sudo` password which isn't visible for the user (and expected
to be requested in a dialog anyway).

Title:
  Kyocera Mita FS-1900 prints garbage

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Using the PPD from
  http://www.kyoceradocumentsolutions.de/dlc/de/driver/all/linux_ppd_s_ksl_8
  .-downloadcenteritem-Single-

License.downloadcenteritem.html?langLabel=de_de&actURL=/content/sites/kme/de/de/index/serviceworld/downloadcenter
(the German one, not sure if that could make a difference).

  Followed the instructions on
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems.

Steps in "USB Printer" gave the following results:

  2. lsmod | grep usb would give several modules (is usblp the right one? the
page doesn't tell)
  3. tailing the syslog would show me USB activity during plug and unplug.
  6. lsusb output seems legit: Bus 001 Device 013: ID 0482:0004 Kyocera Corp.
  8. Device id seems legit, usb_printerid /dev/usb/lp0 says
ID:FS-1900;MFG:Kyocera;CMD:PCLXL,PostScript
Emulation,PCL5E,PJL;MDL:FS-1900;CLS:PRINTER;DES:Kyocera Mita FS-1900;CID:HP
Laserjet 4050 Series;
  10. lpinfo -v has this to say about the printer: direct
usb://Kyocera/FS-1900?serial=AAP2925070 (other non-network, direct printers
listed are "direct hp" and "direct hpfax", could be a modem jack I never cared
about, could be something emulated, no idea)

Printing the test page gives me two sheets of paper, the first mostly
empty except for three lines each starting(?) with a single full stop
character, and a second with these lines (note the initial blank on
most line starts, could actually be multiple blanks):

   ERROR
   rangecheck
   OFFENDING COMMAND:
   filter
   STACK:
  .
   563135
   --nostringval--
   --nostringval--
   5

The printer seems to be emitting a line with a full stop every 20
lines or so, the full stop in the message above is somehow connected
  to that.

From the DebuggingPrintingProblems page, I tried both usb-unidir-default and
usb-no-reattach-default, with no discernible difference.

(Things were slightly complicated by the docking station being entirely
unresponsibe on three of six USB ports. I don't know whether the ports of the
drivers are at fault here, but I guess that's unrelated to CUPS.)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1517272] Re: Can't import ssh keys

2016-01-01 Thread Patrick
I can confirm this bug on a fresh install of 14.04. I am unable to
import my keys as a result. My solution was to generate new keys for my
remote servers, but next time I hope to export/import. This bug prevents
that for the time being.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 991666] Re: VPN Connects Successfully & Then Shortly Thereafter Fails

2016-01-01 Thread Avankey
I had two problem with my pptp vpn connection on ubuntu 14.04 with 3.19
Kernel.

first it wont connect at all and i solved that with this command:

sudo modprobe nf_conntrack_pptp nf_conntrack_proto_gre

second my vpn connection gets disconnected after a few second (usually with
first packets transmit) and i solved that with my vpn setting's on network
manager:
IPv4 Setting tab -> Routers -> checked both check boxes there.

I am able to successfully establish a PPTP VPN connection in Ubuntu
12.04 (kernel 3.2.0-24-generic) but after approximately 30 seconds to
1.5 minutes it will fail. During the connection time I am only able
to load about 1-2 webpages and then they freeze and I cannot access
resources on the VPN network. I do not believe this is related to my
VPN server as I am able to establish VPN connections with my Windows

  solution to this problem?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 317897] Re: pidgin crash with Pulse Audio

2016-01-01 Thread Michael Alexander
I'm having this exact issue ever since installing Ubuntu 15.10 (Wily
Werewolf). It was never an issue before. I had my Pidgin sounds set to
use ALSA. Changing them to "Automatic" made no difference. Pidgin
crashes and closes itself out seemingly at random, whether I'm using my
computer at the time or not. No connection to playing other sounds or
videos.

installed libpurple version is 2.10.11
installed pulseaudio version is 1:6.0-0ubuntu13

Crash error contains this line:
Pidgin GStreamer-CRITICAL **: gst_poll_get_read_gpollfd: assertion 'set !=
NULL' failed

It looks to be the same as this bug from 7 years ago:
https://developer.pidgin.im/ticket/7519

Some good discussion is here:
https://bugzilla.redhat.com/show_bug.cgi?id=47

Everything I'm finding on this is from 2009, though. I don't know why
it's suddenly appeared in a fresh install of Ubuntu 15.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1522527] Re: Feature request: reinstate the menu option to hide the toolbar

2016-01-01 Thread Alistair Muldal
There is already a closely related issue here:

https://bugzilla.gnome.org/show_bug.cgi?id=714996

Unfortunately the evince devs seem to have no interest in reintroducing
this feature :-/

Title:
Feature request: reinstate the menu option to hide the toolbar

Status in evince package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Back in the days of Gnome 2 the evince toolbar used to be fully user-
customizable, but now there is no longer even an option to hide the
toolbar. I find this especially annoying when I want to view documents
in full-screen mode on a small laptop display.

There are quite a few questions regarding this on AskUbuntu:

  http://askubuntu.com/q/430822/185188
  http://askubuntu.com/q/587095/185188
  http://askubuntu.com/q/657226/185188

There is also a 4-year-old feature request for a keyboard shortcut to
disable the toolbar here, although at the time the request was made it
seems there was still a menu option that did this:

  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/evince/+bug/780491

  I'm using evince 3.16.1 on Ubuntu 15.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 559331] Re: Permanent "Printer-out-of-paper" message.

2016-01-01 Thread Richard
As of Ubuntu 15.10, a get-around is this:

sudo systemctl stop cups && sudo sed --in-place '/Reason media-empty-
warning/d' /etc/cups/printers.conf; sudo systemctl start cups

Check the status:
$ system-config-printer
double-click your printer
in left pane, select Ink/Toner Levels
Under Status Messages either (bad):
- Printer 'xyz' is out of paper.
or (good):
There are no status messages for this printer.

Title:
  Permanent "Printer-out-of-paper" message.

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: cups

This probably has to do with CUPS. Version: 1.4.1- 4ubuntu2.4 (latest
  on Karmic).

I was printing a document when the printer was out of paper and got a
message that "The printer is out of paper". I went to reload it and
clicked resume on the printer and printing carried on normally.

From this point on, the message "The printer is out of paper" is permanently
stuck on the printer.
  - Every time i print, i get the message "The printer is out of paper", but
the printing occurs without errors.
  - The configuration tool (system-config-printer 1.1.12) shows the printer
with the red error sign. When viewing the properties of said printer, in the
"Ink/Toner Levels" section, i have the "Status Message": "Printer
HP-Officejet-Pro-k550 is out of paper". If i click refresh then i get a "CUPS
server error": "There was an error during the CUPS operation:
'client-error-document-format-not-supported'." (Not sure this is relevant).

Removing and reinstalling the printer fixes this.

It happens absolutely randomly. I haven't been able to figure out any

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1366221] Re: gnome-calculator does not show application menu anywhere

2016-01-01 Thread Filofel
Same problem here, running 14.04 with flashback-metacity.
When needed, as a workaround, I'm changing gnome-calculator config using dconf
as indicated below, but I certainly would not consider this convenient.

$ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'basic'"; gnome-calculator
$ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'advanced'"; gnome-calculator
$ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'programming'";
gnome-calculator
$ dconf write /org/gnome/calculator/button-mode "'financial'"; gnome-calculator

Title:
gnome-calculator does not show application menu anywhere

Status in gnome-calculator package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
gnome-calculator no longer offers, as of 14.04, an application menu.
It used to be there before the upgrade, in 12.04. So switching between
scientific and engineering now requires me to use dconf-editor.

Note that I did check hovering menu line, application title bar, and
  thereabouts, to no avail.

  This application is now useless...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1530366] Re: 1 second lag when opening URLs from the command line

2016-01-01 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
Status changed to 'Confirmed' because the bug affects multiple users.

** Changed in: chromium-browser (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop
Packages, which is subscribed to chromium-browser in Ubuntu.
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1530366

Title:
1 second lag when opening URLs from the command line

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When you, or another application, attempts to open a URL in Chromium,
there is a very perceptible delay: over 1 second on my modern
  i7/ssds/>16gb ram desktop.

  e.g.

  chromium-browser http://google.com

  or:

  xdg-open http://google.com

This is annoying. It doesn't happen with Chrome Stable Channel, nor with
Debian's Chromium packaging. This has become significantly worse since
Chromium 45.

  --

I had a go at diagnosing this on the Chrome upstream bug tracker:
  https://code.google.com/p/chromium/issues/detail?id=569437

In summary: Chromium in Ubuntu is built with dynamic linking, which is
apparently a big surprise to the Chromium people, as it is known to
cause issues. Specifically, just loading libraries (like `ldd -r`)
takes 900ms+, instead of the <100ms expected. This doesn't show up
well in Chrome tracing, as it has to happen before Chrome tracing can
  start.

  chrome-stable:
  % time ldd -r /opt/google/chrome/chrome | wc -l
  81

  0.02s user 0.01s system 84% cpu 0.038 total

  chromium-browser from Ubuntu:
  % time ldd -r /usr/lib/chromium-browser/chromium-browser | wc -l
  201

  0.89s user 0.01s system 99% cpu 0.909 total

The choice to go shared_library is only in Ubuntu (i.e. not Debian).
The debian/rules file in the package contains:

147 # Do this for every architecture. More than 4GB of memory is too much to
expect
  148 # of builders.
  149 COMPONENT_SHARED_LIB_BUILD := 1
  150
  151 ifeq (1,$(COMPONENT_SHARED_LIB_BUILD))
  152 BROWSER_GYP_DEFINES += component=shared_library
  153 FFMPEG_GYP_DEFINES += component=shared_library
  154 endif

  --

Please remove this customisation and Make opening links Great Again.

I can copy files from Android device, and paste to a home folder, like

Title:
FGLRX package cant be installed and run correctly on 15.10 UPGRADE

Status in fglrx-installer package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hi there!

I cant get my graphics to work properly.. I have an AMD radeon HD 6450
card, I changed the display drivers via

system settings -> programs & updates -> additional drivers

to fglrx there (switching from the default xserver-xorg-video-ati),
  that worked.

But when I did upgrade the distribution from 15.04 to 15.10, it just
"hanged" when loading ubuntu.. it never got into xserver.. managed to
get around that by connectin an old monitor via vga to my mobo
directly, then it worked somehow by displaying the picture on my main
screen via hdmi via amd hd 6450..

Have tried to install fglrx back and forth trying to get it to work,
but it does not seem to work..

I did get this message when filing the bug:

"Your system is providing 3D via software rendering rather than
hardware rendering. This is a compatibility mode which should display
3D graphics properly but the performance may be very poor. If the
problem you're reporting is related to graphics performance, your real
question may be why X didn't use hardware acceleration for your
  system."

What is even more disturbing is that I cant switch back to
xserver-xorg-video-ati eighter and run that driver via the "additional drivers"
settings dialogue.

Dont know if I should file that into a separate bug but thought it
  maybe helps reporting that.

Dont know how to get fglrx to work actually.. also the screen is reporting
just a single resolution that is very low that I also even cant change..

  Thanks for reading.
  Have a nice day!

  /Micke

As reported in (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xserver-xorg-
video-intel/+bug/1522727).

Since upgrading to Ubuntu 15.10, X.org crashes intermittently. The
screen will suddenly turn black, and after a few seconds, the LightDM
login screen appears. All unsaved work is lost of course.

A clean install of 15.10 did not help, the problem persists.

It happens absolutely randomly. I haven't been able to figure out any
pattern related to time or specific user interaction that would cause
this, except that I believe the crash is always triggered by some kind
of input device action, i.e. mouse click or key press. The system won't
crash if I don't actively do any work.

Regression: Visual new email notification no longer working in 38.2.0

Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1530500] [NEW] Desktop manager crashes to login screen without warning

2016-01-01 Thread Matt Restko
Public bug reported:

I would be happy to try to acquire more information to help track this
problem down but I do not know what to do on my own so I would need
directions.

This problem first started occurring after I upgraded to 15.10 and has
been happening once every few days since then. The system will without
warning crash to a console-looking screen which shows some of the
typical startup screen notifications about different services coming up
etc. The system automatically then goes back to the login screen after
about 10 seconds without user intervention. I log in and it seems that
everything works fine but anything I was working on is lost and there is
an error notification waiting for me.

Title:
Network Manager doesn't set metric for local networks any more,
  causing connection issues

Status in NetworkManager:
  Fix Released
Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in network-manager source package in Vivid:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]
NM changed its method of setting routes on systems, and no longer attaches a
metric value specific to the type of device being used. These values were used
to prioritize connections, so that for example, when connected to both wired
and wireless at the same time, wired can be used in priority over wireless
without incurring packet loss.
Currently, when connected to both wired and wireless are connected to the
same subnet, the user may notice connectivity issues since packets are sent in
a round-robin fashion over all default routes on the same subnet with the same
metric.

  [Test Case]
1- Connect to a wireless network.
2- Connect to the same network over Ethernet both connections should come up
on the same subnet.
3- Make sure there is no packet loss, and that there are specific metric
values for each default route, as displayed by 'ip route'.

  [Regression Potential]
Since handling default routes properly involves correcting the behavior for
all device types, VPN behavior may change to pick up the default routes in all
cases, over a wired connection. It's also possible that a connection pick up
the default route when it is not meant to.

  ---

With Vivid, having two connections to the same network subnet is
unstable due to missing metrics for local networks.

  Example:

Being connected to 192.168.1.0/24 via both wired and wireless will
cause connectivity issues as sent packets hop between the two
  interfaces.

It used to be that this wasn't an issue. I would go between work and
home and plug in and my machine would automatically connect to
wireless and it would use the lower metric ethernet interface for all
communications, while the wlan interface would remain connected but
  unused.

Naming or renaming folder often crashes Nautilus

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
In the last 2 Ubuntu versions I had this problem: naming or renaming
folders crashed nautilus. It happened twice this evening, sometimes I
only see this once in a few days, other times, more times a day if I
work more intensive with files and folders. First it darkens the
Nautilus windows (I usually have 2-3 when working with files - moving,
copying - pictures mainly) and then it crashes, closing all windows.
It happened many times when creating new folders and trying to name
them, after I write the new name and press ENTER; after crash, the
folders are created, but they have the default name (Untitled Folder).

Title:
  Xorg freeze

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Neither the proprietery nor the open source driver work well for my
  ATI graphics card.

The OS driver is the better choice, as it crashes about twice a day and
that's it ...
Crashes = strange patterns filling the screen plus X crashing (Keyboard
combinations don't have effect anymore I think ... tried to quit my code editor
with alt+f4 which should have closed all sourcefiles I was working on, still
some of them were scrambled after reboot)

The proprietary driver works well for some time, then brings on all kinds of
artifacts, displaying old (buffered) parts of windows where they aren't etc.,
for example on mouse scrolling ... unusable really
The Troubleshooting guide says something to check and by trial n error fix
this in the BIOS by trying all AGP APERTURE SIZE settings ... well, I ain't got
no AGP, I got the new stuff (ahemmm ... forget the name ...)
Also, I read it doesn't work with the new kernel of Ubuntu Wily ... so I
guess I'm in luck I switched back in time.

Title:
gpu-manager generates an invalid xorg.conf file

Status in ubuntu-drivers-common package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I use Ubuntu 15.04. I have both a nvidia graphics card and an
integrated intel one. Sometimes, I boot my system without nvidia card,
and sometimes with both. Until recently this setup worked correctly,
so that when the nvidia card was enabled, the system would boot up
using nvidia drivers, and in the other case it would use intel card.
Now I am unable to boot up without nvidia card. Booting with it
removes the xorg.conf file (it is empty). When I reboot with intel
card only, Xorg fails to start because of the following error:

  Data incomplete in file /etc/X11/xorg.conf
Undefined Screen "nvidia" referenced by ServerLayout "layout".

I check gpu-manager's logs, and indeed it claims to have generated the
  xorg.conf file:

However, the generated xorg.conf file is clearly invalid:

  =xorg.conf=
  Section "ServerLayout"
  Identifier "layout"
  Screen 0 "nvidia"
  Inactive "intel"
  EndSection

  Section "Device"
  Identifier "intel"
  Driver "intel"
  BusID "PCI:0@0:2:0"
  Option "AccelMethod" "SNA"
  EndSection

  Section "Screen"
  Identifier "intel"
  Device "intel"
  EndSection
  ===

So Xorg is right to report the error that screen "nvidia" is
undefined. Apparently the xorg.conf file that gpu-manager generated is
incorrect, and this issue prevents me from booting my system
correctly, and this makes me believe this bug may be considered
  significant.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131571] Re: Nautilus properties window "Content" number continuously counting

2016-01-01 Thread Anthony
I have several, various machines using Ubuntu at different stages for over two
years, and they all have had this problem. If a 'Report System Problem' pop-up
occurred there would be more reports, but it loops instead of crashing or
outputting an error: typically you eventually click "close" and it quits like
nothing happened.
This loop occurs with large NTFS file systems containing many files ans
subdirectories, say 20GB+ and 20,000+ files.
I can sometimes get around it by accessing the parent directory properties, but
that includes "system volume information" and recycling and any other unwanted
directories. Right-clicking properties is much simpler than using the command
line so I hope this gets fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1530512] [NEW] Sparse files cause malproportioned charts and "usage" reporting

2016-01-01 Thread Erik Ackermann
Public bug reported:

When scanning dirs with sparse files, the full file size is used in
computing Usage % (in the table) and also for calculating the ring size.
Curiously wherever a file size is mentioned (in table or highlighting a
ring piece) the dirs allocated size is displayed (same as what `du -hs`
would show).

This leads to weird behavior where dirs with similar reported size (in
both baobob and du) have wildly different Usage% and ring size if some
contain sparse files. It is inconsistent (either both should be
allocated size or both be file size), but to match `du` I would argue
that allocated size should be used.

I glanced at the code and I think the simple fix would be to change the
percent calculation in baobab-scanner.vala from using size to using
alloc_size. Likewise in the calculation for charts.

** Affects: baobab (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1530514] [NEW] unity-control-center datetime can be made to seize when sorting extra clocks by time

2016-01-01 Thread ADFH
Public bug reported:

I work on systems that are in multiple timezones, so I like to have
multiple clocks available to me at a glance so I can see what time it is
where those systems are running.

Due to an unrelated mistake, I did a complete reinstall of Ubuntu last
night, but maintained my user profile (separate drive).

1. I clicked on the clock in the system notification area, and selected Time &
Date Settings.
2. I ticked some boxes (Show a clock, Weekday, 24 hour time, seconds, monthly
calendar, include week numbers, time in other locations)
3. I clicked "Choose locations" and added Auckland, Adelaide, Perth, New York
and Dallas
4. I clicked add (+) again but before actually entering a title, I clicked
"Sort by time" (having clicked neither sort by time, nor sort by name
previously) ... nothing seemed to happen so I clicked it again a couple of times

It's at this point my hard disk started thrashing heavily for several
minutes and I lost control of my system until the IO subsided. I could
not SSH in from another system (I could authenticate it seems, but not
get a prompt) as if something was consuming all the available disk IO.

After a few moments, the system came good again.

It seems the key is to click the "+" but not complete the actual
location adding operation, as clicking "Sort by time" otherwise works
just fine.
