[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1454473] Re: In Ubuntu 15.04, simply moving the mouse via touchpad scrolls the window
Happend to me today, but on Ubuntu 14.04 LTS. All updates installed. Laptop is: Asus K53SD -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to xserver-xorg-input-synaptics in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1454473 Title: In Ubuntu 15.04, simply moving the mouse via touchpad scrolls the window Status in Xserver Xorg Input Synaptics: New Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Version: Ubuntu 3.19.0-16.16-generic 3.19.3 (This is mostly a copy paste from here: http://askubuntu.com/questions/617117/in-ubuntu-15-04-simply-moving- the-mouse-via-touchpad-scrolls-the-window) When I first boot everything works fine. But then something happens (not sure what triggers it) and many programs start scrolling just by moving the mouse over the window. So far I see this happens in Nautilus, Document Reader, Archive Manager, Ubuntu Software Center, Meld, and System Monitor (what do they all have in common, GTK?). It does NOT happen in web browsers, thunderbird, programs using Mono, Java, etc, for some reason. To be more specific of the issue: if the mouse starting position is over a document in Document Reader, for example, and then I move the mouse via touchpad, it'll scroll the document like an anchor, where the position of the mouse over the document doesn't change (yet it scrolls). I have already tried disabling "two finger scroll", "disable while typing", and the "tap to click" options, but they made no difference (after the glitchiness starts). The other odd case is that in Nautilus, if the mouse starting position is over a file or directory, it sometimes selects it instead of scrolling. Single-clicking a directory will open the directory (so the initial touch acts like a clicks, and letting go acts as the second click). The only thing I can do to temporarily fix the problem is restart the computer. There are no issues when using a mouse. Update 2015/05/03: I see how to reproduce it now. It appears to be a glitchy two-finger scroll issue. If you scroll any window with two fingers a lot, eventually it'll start causing this problem. Try various actions with two fingers, like "clicking" with two fingers, or scrolling in various directions quickly, etc, and it will start happening. It's interesting that it only happens in certain programs and not in others, which makes me wonder whether it is really a trackpad issue or some framework's issue. I can confirm that this is happening on the 15.04 Live CD, so this happens out of the box. The only work-around for this issue is to disable two-finger scroll (if it's already glitchy you'll need to restart). Not sure if it matters, but I'm using the Dell XPS 13 2015 9343. Update 2015/05/05: Apparently this bug can still happen even with two- finger scroll off, though it's more rare. Again, only certain programs have the issue, so it's hard to tell if it's a touchpad issue or something else. This issue had been fixed [2] in GTK+3, but GTK+2 apps that use the mentioned function still crash when trying to allocate a lot of memory. An example of such app is eom (Eye of MATE), an image viewer, which crashes when trying to load a large image. I propose fixing it in current Ubuntu releases with the patch which fixes the crash. The debdiffs are in the attachments in the comments below. [Test Case] Steps to reproduce: 1. Have a 64-bit installation of Ubuntu. 2. Install eom if it isn't installed. 3. Download the archive from the attachment of this post and unpack it. (Firefox doesn't allow me to upload image as is - tries to make thumbnail of it right in the file open dialog, then crashes.) 4. Open the unpacked image (27000_27000_1437947845.png) in eom. 5. eom crashes. The full backtrace is at [3]. You'll also see an error message: "failed to allocate 18446744072330584320 bytes". This huge number appears due to overflow during multiplication of two 32-bit signed integers. In the patch, this error is avoided by using a different memory allocation function. [Regression Potential] After several months of testing the patch in Debian Jessie, Debian Testing and Ubuntu 14.04, I haven't noticed any regressions. I experience the same problem. When someone closes my laptop lid, when no-one is logged in, the laptop keeps running and gets seriously hot like a toaster oven. It is bound to fry one day. I think that this is a bug, since all configurations panels, and configurations files I found out, was saying that when closing the lid, the computer will suspend. I've changed from lightdm to gdm using dpkg-reconfigure gdm and with gdm when closing the lid the computer suspend normally as expected. Update: The author (AriSoft) of the menu extension on which the subject menu was built suggested a one-line change in the CSS for the menu, which has restored the normal functionality of the menu in Firefox and as had no apparent impact on its function in other browsers. Several users have found that they lose sound, and that the problem turns out to be an asound.state file which does not work for their hardware. It has not been established how the file came to be corrupt or whether the problem was caused by upgrades to newer versions which did not handle the file as written by the previous version. It has not been established what aspect of the asound.state files caused the problem. But several approaches can fix the problem: 1. Removing the ALSA modules, deleting the asound.state file, and reloading the modules. This is difficult to do for non-expert users, because applications such as the Gnome mixer and volume control can be using the modules, preventing their unloading. 2. Removing the ALSA modules, and editing the asound.state to an ultra-minimal state that reflects only the primary card, and reloading the modules. 3. Invoking the alsa-utils "reset" option. On Ubuntu, typing this fixes the problem for Intel sound cards: /etc/init.d/alsa-utils reset Intel The latter option is thought to be best, because it doesn't require unloading and reloading modules. It would be very useful to be able to invoke that "reset" command from the GUI Gnome mixer applet, which is why this bug has been filed on that. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1462183] Re: Nautilus "Enter Location" Stops Working
@algomorph, I have since moved away from Ubuntu in January to Archlinux with KDE. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nautilus in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1462183 Title: Nautilus "Enter Location" Stops Working Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Earlier, I had been able to use CTRL-L for "Enter Location" and it worked. At some point I had pressed ESC to revert back to the button- based paths. Later on, with that same window open, I came back and tried CTRL-L and the path didn't switch back to the textbox. Even going to "Go"->"Enter Location" did nothing. While writing this up, I did a test by closing that window, then opening a new "Files" window and CTRL-L worked right off the bat. This wasn't my first experience with that "bug", but enough times for me to finally submit it when it happened. Hopefully the data submitted will provide the information needed to find the cause.
