  Binary package hint: network-manager

I've got few wifi network profiles. NM connects to 1st available
network in alphabetical order. But at my home NM connects to slow and
unstable free network and I want to connect to my own wifi router. I
suggest to add some priorities to different networks to set the order
  which network to connect to.

Network manager crashes after last upgrade

Status in libnl3 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Hello
I'm running Ubuntu 14.04 and did an upgrade yesterday.
Since that upgrade and reboot, network manager crashes and I'm unable to
restart it.
In my update configuration, pre release (trusty proposed) is NOT selected and
I'm still running libnl-*-3-200 3.2.21-1.
The syslog states that network manager main process has been killed by SEGV
signal.
Installed release of network manager is 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu7.2

Restarting the network manager does not do anything, same for
ifup/ifdown. Network icon does not appear anymore.

  Your support will be appreciated.
  Kind regards.

Bug description:
I appear to have been hit by a regression problem in the libnl update
  described here:

After running a regular software update this morning and rebooting,
I've completely lost networking access. Network Manager is down. I'm
running Trusty 14.04. I tried this workaround:

  http://askubuntu.com/questions/727127/last-upgrade-crashes-network-
  manager-no-internet-connection-no-applet

  ... and step 1 didn't work. I'll be trying step 2 tonight when I've
  got more time.

I'm filing this as a new bug with a regression-update, as indicated in
  the above-linked bug report.

Title:
upgrade of libnl-genl-3-200 causes networkmanager to not load

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This morning, before leaving for work, I saw there was a update
available for a package in Ubuntu 14.04 (I do NOT have the -proposed
repositories enabled). I installed it and shutdown. When I got to
  work, no internet (network-manager won't load, there's a general
  protection error in dmesg).

Looking at the apt log /var/cache/apt/history , it looks like libnl-
genl-3-200 was updated (and that was the *only* package that was
  updated).

After loading up synaptic, there are other "upgradable" packages, none
of which got installed (or were listed) when I upgraded libnl-
  genl-3-200:

  gir1.2-netowrkmanager-1.0
  libmm-glib0
  libnm-glib-vpn1
  libnm-glib4
  libnm-util2
  modemmanager
  netowrk-manager

However, without the internet, I can't get these packages! Please
  help!

I *did* have an older version of libnl-genl-3-200 in
/var/apt/cache/archives (from Jan 29), but installing this and
restarting networkmanager (or the machine) does not fix the issue.

Title:
Todays update of libnl-3-200 to 3.2.21-1ubuntu1 broke networkmanager

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  On 14.04 LTS,
the long-standing issue described in bug report 1581535 (libnl /
networkmanager) seems
to have appeared in the main update stream as a result of an update of libnl.
  (libnl-3-200, libnl-route-3, libnl-genl-3) from version 3.2.21-1 to
3.2.21-1ubuntu1.
I do NOT have trusty-proposed updates enabled.
  I am currently running network-manager 0.9.8.8-0ubuntu7.2

After the update - no wired or wireless network connections.

After manually configuring the wired connection, I successfully managed to
downgrade the libnl
  changes using
  sudo apt-get install libnl-3-200=3.2.21-1 libnl-route-3-200=3.2.21-1
libnl-genl-3-200=3.2.21-1
and restored normal network connectivity for both wired and wireless.
(I did the downgrade after some help from our IT guy to restore my wired
connection manually, so I'm not 100% sure whether the cache would have had the
necessary files to allow doing this downgrade with no internet connection.)

It seems to me that there needs to be a fix for both packages in the
  standard release.

How do I update networkmanager? Or are there plans to ship that with
  the normal updates?

 thanks for your help.

2016-05-21 Thread eL
For me it was a faulty init.d script with a broken LSB header.

/etc/init.d/virtuoso-nepomuk

Fixed the end of the LSB header from
###
to
### END INIT INFO

and another start of the installation with

sudo apt-get install -f

continued.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1584386] [NEW] Main monitor doesn't wake up after system suspend

2016-05-21 Thread Diabolo
Public bug reported:

If I lock my Unity session (Super+L) and power down my two monitors
using external power switch, when after a few minutes I restore the
power to monitors and wake up Ubuntu only my VGA connected LG display
wakes up. My main monitor - a DisplayPort connected Dell U2410 wakes up
only for a brief moment (it's power led goes blue from yellow) but
before any picture would be displayed it goes back to sleep mode (led
goes yellow again).

All of this is true only for X session. If I switch to tty1
(Ctrl+Alt+F1) the Dell wakes up correctly and shows tty1. Going back to
X (Ctrl+Alt+F7) causes this monitor to go to power save mode again.

The only means for me to get my main display back in X is to restart the
computer, as logging in and out of X doesn't help. I have also tried
running Displays configuration tool while in X, but what it only does is
that once I click "Detect Displays" button Dell's power led goes blue
for a brief moment and then immediately back to yellow (power save
mode).

I haven't encountered such behavior with Ubuntu 14.04, nor have I
experienced right after migrating to 16.04. I believe this regression
showed up with some update within the last two weeks.

Both monitors are hooked up to AMD Radeon 5850 graphics card.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1574347] [network-manager/xenial] possible regression found

2016-05-21 Thread Ubuntu Foundations Team Bug Bot
As a part of the Stable Release Updates quality process a search for
Launchpad bug reports using the version of network-manager from xenial-
proposed was performed and bug 1584276 was found. Please investigate
this bug report to ensure that a regression will not be created by this
SRU. In the event that this is not a regression remove the
"verification-failed" tag from this bug report and add the tag "bot-
stop-nagging" to bug 1584276 (not this bug). Thanks!

NM needs to re-read the DEVTYPE after the device name changed, an example is
that WiFi network list disappears from network manager applet

  Steps to reproduce: -

  1. Connect to a WiFi AP.
  2. Switch off the AP OR switch off the wifi in the computer.
  3. Switch point (2) back on.
  4. The network will get connected to the AP it was connected to in point (1).

  Problems:-

  1. The network manager applet does not show the list of WiFI APs it can find.
  2. The network manager applet does not the name of the AP to which it is
connected
  3. The icon of the applet shows two vertical arrows in opposite direction -
the wired connection symbol and NOT the wifi connected icon.

  Temporary Workaround:-
Log out and again log back in.

  [Testcase]

After upgrading to the new version, the repeating the above steps
  should give expected behavior.

  [Regression Potential]
Potential of causing regression is relatively small for a one line change to
re-read a value to be known.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1578821] Re: I'm not able to install galician language in Ubuntu 16.04

2016-05-21 Thread Mattia Rizzolo
This was really a "problem" of language-selector, but I'm dealing with the

Bug description:
  [Impact]

Installing the Galician language via Language Support fails. The
reason is that there is currently two hunspell spellchecking packages
  in the archive:

  * hunspell-gl-es, provided by the hunspell-gl-es source package
  * hunspell-gl, provided by the libreoffice-dictionaries source package

Even if hunspell-gl-es conflicts to hunspell-gl, having both of them
available in the archive is not compatible with the way the writing
aids is pulled via Language Selector. The proposed upload in this PPA:

  https://launchpad.net/~gunnarhj/+archive/ubuntu/lo-dicts-symlinks

drops the hunspell-gl binary from libreoffice-dictionaries.

  [Test Case]

   * Open Language Support

  Low.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 572063] Re: [NO SOUND] 10.04 - Intel Corporation 82801H HD Audio Controller (rev 03)

2016-05-21 Thread Dean
20160521
workaround: use PulseAudio Volume control, don't use ubuntu packaged volume
control. replug HDMI at TV.
May 21,2016 Ubuntu 14.04
The standard volume control in the settings manager on unity does not reassign
HDMI correctly.
If I use the PulseAudio volume control (pavucontrol) only, then I can switch
the output back and forth using the "Playback on" button on the playback tab.
Configuration Tab can also make changes but is not simple.
Note: my TV remembers the sound is not present when I use the standard ubuntu
volume control to switch back to pc speakers. I have to replug the HDMI cable
on the TV to reset TV after closing the standard volume control.

my hardware contains both DPORT and HDMI. 3.13.0-86-generic 64 bit

Initially 20160521 I removed alsa and pulsaudio. Then I reloaded both with all
suggested extra software (apt-get). this worked to get audio through HDMI. but
as soon as I switched back to pc speakers, I could not get it to work any more.
tried many things till a random combination of settings with plugging HDMI at
TV set got it working.
Then there were more problems after switching back to pc speakers using
standard volume control.
finally discovered that PulseAudio volume control will switch output ports
correctly, but fuctionality is dissabled as soon as you use the ubuntu volume
control to switch back to pc speakers.

by making a file under /etc/modprobe.d with the following:

The problem with this is when I go to use HDMI out to my TV, I have to

Nominated for Xenial, because this warning message seems to irritate many
people.
Can be fixed when convenient (by just removing that symlink or applying the
upstream patch which renames the plugin and builds it properly without
versioned name).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1582249] Re: No POP3 connexion

2016-05-21 Thread mpaq
Today a new version was installed and replace the 1.24.4.0 (why? the version
was blocked in Synaptic...).
That new version(1.38.8.0+build1-Oui) present exactly the same bug: no
connexion with pop3.

Best Regards

I've try to change from pop3 server, with Dovecot, but it did not change the

I have to go back to an earlier version (The one proposed by SYNAPTIC was
1.24.4.0)
With that old version every things is working fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1301158] Re: nm-applet icon invisible

I can confirm that the dbus-launch workaround mentioned in #14 also
helps when running mate-desktop in 16.04 xenial upgraded from
12.04+14.04 (manually... so this might not be a real bug there).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1409032] Re: gvfsd-smb: very high CPU utilisation

2016-05-21 Thread GizmoChicken
I had this issue (nearly 100% CPU use by gvfsd-smb-browse) on a laptop
that is running Ubuntu 16.04.

In my case, removing the package "gvfs-backends" (which is needed for
Samba and other things) is a workaround for the CPU usage issue. I don't
use Samba on this laptop, and at least so far, I haven't noticed any
other ill effects. Your mileage may vary.

share. Mounting using sudo ($ sudo mount -t smbfs -o

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1542519] Re: Double menu bar

2016-05-21 Thread Philipp
This bug does not depend on nvidia cards.
I can reproduce it with VLC (go fullscren and then back to window mode) on a

Status in OEM Priority Project:

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in network-manager source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1160046] Re: terminal does not resize correctly after maximise by sliding to top panel

2016-05-21 Thread Matthew Fearnley
Note: on watching the behaviour more closely: on restore the terminal
window is very briefly restored to its correct size/position, then
almost immediately changes its size to fill the screen.

It also jumps to the top-left corner at the same time, I think if and
only if it was entirely onscreen.

Just installed 15.04 fresh from the latest ISO (beta2).

In 14.10, I was able to set the output profile either to a2dp or
  hsp/hfp (telephony duplex).

In 15.04, it only works in telephony duplex mode. I can't get high

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1584300] [NEW] X can't be started without login manager

2016-05-21 Thread andrea merello
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04 LTS

X runs fine from the login manager, but if I remove the login manager
(apt-get remove sddm), X can't be run from the text login: running
startx don't even change to graphic mode and causes errors (log
attached).

This used to work at least up to 15.04

This happens on various VM vith different video card emulation (vmware, cirrus,
qemu vga) and on both ubuntu and kubuntu. Log changes slightly, but it still
seems a permission-related problem: depending by the (emulated) video HW, it
can complain about
xf86EnableIOPorts: failed to set IOPL for I/O (Operation not permitted)
or can segfault in libpciaccess.

This happens both on system updated from older version (15.04) and on a
new clean install from scratch.

While the installed-from-scratch system obviously has the default,
untouched, kernel, on the machine I updated from 15.04 I kept my custom
kernel, that is the same that worked before update to 16.04, so it's
probably not due to anything related to the kernel). Never tested
outside a VM on real HW.

On the system I updated from 15.04, I also tried to run startx as root,
and it seems to make the difference, because in this way the graphic is
initialized correctly. (I see some windows with errors, and I can't
reach the desktop, but this is probably another unrelated problem,
possibly due to my local configuration).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1577137] Re: sane service masked and cannot be unmasked

2016-05-21 Thread Hanky
@ jurgen:

Perhaps you should have a look at https://wiki.ubuntuusers.de/SANE-
Scanserver_im_Netzwerk/, judging from your email address you might be
able to read german. Much about saned is documented there, I added my
solution just the other day.

sane service masked and cannot be unmasked

Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to 16.04 (from 14.04) I noticed the sane daemon (sane-
utils 1.0.25+git20150528-1ubuntu2) was no longer running. Attempting
to manually start it results in systems complaining that the service
  is masked:

kjetil at lucien in ~> sudo systemctl start saned
Failed to start saned.service: Unit saned.service is masked.

  Unmasking it does not work:

kjetil at lucien in ~> sudo systemctl unmask saned
kjetil at lucien in ~> sudo systemctl start saned
Failed to start saned.service: Unit saned.service is masked.

kjetil at lucien in ~> ps u -C saned

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1579712] Re: Refresh hangs indefinitely, appstreamcli using 100% CPU

2016-05-21 Thread Ljiljan Veselinovic
In order to install IBM SPSS, I had to install "libstdc++5" package. I
noticed this bug was happening after installing this package and IBM
SPSS. After removing libstdc++5 (not required to use IBM SPSS, just to
install it), I didn't experience this bug. However, this all happened in
last two days, so it could be that Ubuntu updates fixed the issue.

Title:
Refresh hangs indefinitely, appstreamcli using 100% CPU

Status in appstream package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in appstream source package in Xenial:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * The cache refresh is blocked on a strdup on a non-NULL-terminated string
in some very rare occasions (very rare because this bug is present for almost
3y without a single report).
   * Fixing this bug resolves the issue for people who might experience it.
   * See https://github.com/ximion/appstream/issues/35 for details.

  [Test Case 1]

   * Run `sudo appstreamcli refresh --force`
   * The AppStream cache should be updated, no change in behavior should be
seen.

  [Test Case 2]

   * In case you were experiencing the almost-infinite hang when running
`sudo appstreamcli refresh --force`, this issue should be fixed with
  the SRU.

  [Regression Potential]

   * Very low, since this only fixes the decompression code. There
should be no sideeffects of that (given that the patch itself doesn't
break anything, which it shouldn't, since it has been tested upstream
  for a while)

  [Other Info]

   * This fix has been applied upstream:
https://github.com/ximion/appstream/commit/f33c520c37e2ba51d92402220250b8d501a2bf43
   * A smaller version of the patch (one-liner) is available, at the expense of
not having reduced memory usage:
https://github.com/ximion/appstream/commit/378941787d3584b3eb31a6ebe40e0aacc10e180a

/!\ Installing the bugfix from xenial-proposed, without going through APT:
To install the fixed packages manually, please execute the following commands
(for amd64, adjust URLs for other architectures):

  ```
  cd /tmp && mkdir asfix
  cd asfix
  wget
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/appstream_0.9.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  wget
https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+archive/primary/+files/libappstream3_0.9.4-1ubuntu1_amd64.deb
  sudo dpkg -i libappstream3*.deb
  sudo dpkg -i appstream*.deb
  ```
