[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1568224] Re: psmouse FingerSensingPad lost synchronization, throwing bytes away

2016-10-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Alan Mimms, it will help immensely if you filed a new report with the Ubuntu
repository kernel (not mainline/upstream) via a terminal:
ubuntu-bug linux

Please feel free to subscribe me to it.

Title:
psmouse FingerSensingPad lost synchronization, throwing bytes away

Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My first bug report, I apologize if I don't do it right, and please
let me know how to improve it.

Asus Zenbook UX31E initially with Ubuntu 11:10, then 12.04, and then
14.04 worked great until a few weeks ago, when the trackpad became
unusable (mouse jumps all over the screen and starts moving and
clicking around by itself). Booting from USB with Ubuntu 16.04 beta
has the same problem. Dmesg always shows the following type of errors:

psmouse serio4 bad data from KBC - timeout
psmouse serio4 bad data from KBC - bad parity
psmouse serio4 FingerSensingPad at isa0060/serio4/input0 lost
synchronization, throwing 3 bytes away

The laptop works fine with an external USB mouse, as long as I don't
  accidentally touch the trackpad.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629620] [NEW] DNS resolver stops accepting queries

2016-10-01 Thread Joe Barnett
Public bug reported:

After a while / after resume from suspend, the system becomes unable to
respond to DNS queries, with the following output for example:

$ nslookup google.com 127.0.1.1
Server: 127.0.1.1
Address:127.0.1.1#53

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1473149] Re: Lightdm refuses to work after installing kubuntu-desktop

2016-10-01 Thread JNH
I was having the same issue. I discovered the issue when I found errors
written to `/var/log/seat0-greeter.log`:

Error writing X authority: Failed to open X authority
/var/lib/lightdm/.Xauthority: No such file or directory

Indeed, I only had `/var/lib/lightdm-data`. Running the command

mkdir /var/lib/lightdm

and rebooting fixed the issue for me.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1607663] Re: vino-server does not autostart on Ubuntu-GNOME

2016-10-01 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** Description changed:

- The vino-server does currently not autostart if one enables it via the
- sharing settings in gnome-control-center. Running gnome-settings-daemon
- -r --debug shows that it tries to locate vino-server.desktop which it
- cannot find and therefore fails to start. Looking at the debian package,
- a confirmed and working fix for Ubuntu 16.04 is: sudo ln -s
- /etc/xdg/autostart/vino-server.desktop /usr/share/applications/vino-
- server.desktop or only shipping that file in /usr/share/application
+ Impact
+ ==
+ The Desktop Sharing option in GNOME's Settings apps silently doesn't work.
+
+ Test Case
+ =
+ On the host computer:
+ 1. In Ubuntu GNOME, open the Settings app.
+ 2. Open the Sharing panel.
+ 3. In the headerbar, turn on Sharing.
+ 4. Click Screen Sharing. Turn it On. (If it was already On, turn it off then
On.)
+
+ On the guest computer:
+ 5. From a different computer connected to the same local network, attempt to
connect to the local
+
+ For this, you can install Vinagre. Click Connect. Use Protocol: VNC and
+ enter the IP address for the test computer in the Host: field. Click
+ Connect.
+
+ On the host computer:
+ 6. You probably need to approve a popup message to allow the remote user to
connect.
+
+ Regression Potential
+
+ This only adds a symlinked NoDisplay=true .desktop to
+ /usr/share/applications/
+
+ Other Info
+ ==
+ The fix for Ubuntu 16.10 is a bit different. There we can just backport the
systemd service file added to vino 3.22 since gnome-settings-daemon 3.22
handles sharing services via systemd user services.
+
+ I verified that the extra .service file does not affect the way vino-
+ preferences works in Unity 16.10. It's just ignored and manually trying
+ to start the service in Unity doesn't work either which is fine. For
+ 17.04+ we should look at having Unity use the systemd user service too.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629611] [NEW] dns server priority broken

2016-10-01 Thread Thomas M Steenholdt
Public bug reported:

network-manager: 1.2.4-0ubuntu1

Yakkety appears to have switched back from resolved to dnsmasq, but it seems
server priority/order is broken.

Example: In split DNS setups, connecting to VPN will not cause us to
query the DNS provided by the VPN first (or only), which should be the
proper way to resolve names in that case.

Say server.example.com in the public DNS resolves to a.a.a.a and in the
private DNS resolves to b.b.b.b.

Stuff would work from my normal internet-connection, but connection to
VPN would cause stuff to misbehave. I expect to hit the b.b.b.b address
but since my normal LAN DNS is being used first, I'm really hitting
a.a.a.a.

Please let me know how to proceed - Hopefully this can be fixed in time
for release.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629607] [NEW] Privacy settings reset to default on upgrade

2016-10-01 Thread Adam Porter
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu Trusty 14.04
Firefox 49.0

For some time now I have noticed that every time I upgrade Firefox, my
profile's privacy settings are reset to default. For a while I didn't
know why they were being reset, so I put a script in a cron job (see
attachment) to monitor them and alert me when they changed. Since doing
that I have realized that they are reset when I upgrade Firefox.

This is a serious violation of user trust and privacy. Users may have
their preferences set to not save history, to not save cookies, to
delete them upon exit, etc, but after installing a routine upgrade to
Firefox (which happens every few weeks), their privacy settings will be
reset to "Firefox will: Remember history", and the user will not be
informed of this.

I don't know if the cause lies in Firefox itself or in the Ubuntu
packaging, but this needs to be fixed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1314556] Re: Unable to mount Android MTP device

2016-10-01 Thread jbatista
I had a similar problem show up on Lubuntu 16.04 (i386). One thing that
SEEMS to work (it actually made a Samsung phone reboot!) is

1) disable the "USB debugging" on the phone;
2) set the phone to Airplane mode (so it doesn't try to make a network
connection).

In my case, running `dmesg` it seems that Network Manager was trying to set a
network connection:
[ 1039.598665] cdc_acm 1-3:1.1: ttyACM0: USB ACM device

HTH.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629600] [NEW] Installed application from .deb does not appear unless Ubuntu is restarted

2016-10-01 Thread Hadrien
Public bug reported:

I'm using Ubuntu 16.04 x64 and the installed version of gnome-software
is 3.20.1

  * I install a desktop application from a .deb package. I tried several
methods (apt install, dpkg -i, xdg-open then click on install button).
  * After the installation, I control that the application is visible from the
system:
* The application appears correctly in the application list in Unity Dash
* The application appears in the "Open With" menu list in Nautilus (because
of registered mime types)
* The package name of the application can be used as an argument of apt
commands (apt show, apt remove...) and dpkg (dpkg -l, dpkg -L...)
  * I start gnome-software.
  * I click on the "installed" tab to get the list of installed applications.

expected result: the freshly installed application is in the list
actual result: the freshly installed application is not in the list.

If I reboot my computer and start gnome-software, the installed
application appears in the list.

It looks like there is some kind of cache that is not refreshed at the
right moment.

** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

I tried this, but I think that it might have only been before I worked
out the below ExecStopPost issue - so it's worth testing again.

I remember this problem.

It would only solve this specific issue if it lets us get rid of the
stop or restart in the session-runner script. If you ever end up
stopping gnome-keyring from within a new session then its ExecStopPost
kills the upstart session of this new one that we are starting up, *not*
the previous one that it was started up under. That's a mismatch vs.
session and user specific semantics of upstart and systemd --user.

Hmm. Maybe this is saying that we should bind ubuntu-session.target to
something else - like unity7? You can't log in again with an active
unity7, so in theory (if stop is propagated down to graphical-session
and graphical-session-pre) there wouldn't be a need to stop/restart in
the script since everything would be stopped by definition if you're
trying to start unity7 again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1626288] Re: X fonts and widgets disappear after suspend/resume cycle

2016-10-01 Thread Owen Williams
This happens to me too with intel graphics, although not on every
suspend / resume cycle. I'll test the mainline kernel and see if that
fixes the issue. My machine has had issues in the past with SNA
acceleration, this may be another case where falling back to UXA fixes
it.

not all the time, but at some suspend/resume operations fonts disapear from
gnome terminal, nm-applet and soffice which then show spaces and underscore

As it happens not at each suspend resume I find it hard to diagnose what is
going wrong.
next time I will launch more apps to see wich ones are affected.

Title:
Text Menus not displaying - org.gtk.vfs.Daemon

Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I installed standard Ubuntu 14.04 LTS about a 3 weeks ago and
everything has been working fine. After a fortnight of all working
fine I installed Wine via the standard package manager and then
installed a simple windows exe WBridge5 (using wine) and then ran it a
couple of times using wine and all was fine. Note that this may be
  irrelevant.

In the morning when I started my DELL Inspiron 6400 and after
entering my password the standard desktop appeared without my
previously set background; the file mgr appears automatically (without
the recent files icon) and the following message appears:

"Oops something went wrong. Unhandled error message: The name
org.gtk.vfs.Daemon was not provided by any .Service files."

After acknowledging the message, my programs operate but WITHOUT a
text menu showing on the top menu bar. There are other minor
inconveniences such as Alt+Tab doesn't work and there is no "Recent"
option on the Files program and "System Settings Appearance" cannot be
changed. The show stopper for me is that unless a program has a non
text menu method of running a menu option, you are stuffed. This
  affects Libreoffice really badly.

I have tried all sorts of things and most of these have been logged on
askubuntu where there is more information. See :

http://askubuntu.com/questions/736528/ubuntu-desktop-problem-org-gtk-vfs-daemon-error

Bug description:
Scanner: Canon, Inc. CanoScan N1240U/LiDE 30
Ubuntu 14.04, Simple Scan version 3.12.1.

Adjusting the settings of brightness and contrast has no effect.

With the default for scanning in "text" mode being too bright, this makes
"Simple Scan" in text mode unusable for me.
Brightness and contrast settings don't work in "foto" mode, too. But the
default of the foto mode is usable.

Brightness setting does work in program "Skanlite".

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629579] Re: Nautilus does not launch becuase it cannot find commons_comun

2016-10-01 Thread Theodore Frederick
Fixed!

If a nautilus python extension under /usr/share/nautilus-
python/extensions/ cannot import a python module it crashes.

It was a pushbullet problem.

Please mark as closed, Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1577197] Re: Pulseaudio bluez5-util.c: TryAcquire() failed - Operation Not Authorized

2016-10-01 Thread Mark
Just upgraded to Ubuntu 16.04 and have the issue.
I can confirm that the workaround of Con Kolivas working Thanks for that!

dpkg -l | grep bluez

I have version: 5.37-0ubuntu5 just like the repository version.
(apt-cache policy bluez)

If this issue is fixed in ver 5.42 in August, when is it expected to
appear in the repository?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1327801] Re: Bightness and contrast settings have no effect

2016-10-01 Thread Heiko L
Sorry for the late response.
I tested today's cdimage (daily-live).
Unfortunately, the issue has not changed.
Still: Brightness and contrast settings have no effect.
(Tested with the same old scanner "Canon, Inc. CanoScan N1240U/LiDE 30".)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1618886] Re: unity-gtk-module.service is racy; session services don't stop if session terminates

2016-10-01 Thread Martin Pitt
> To fix that, something like comment #3 is needed. Such as looping over
all 'active' units that are PartOf graphical-session.target and stopping
them all.

I think we would only need to "systemctl stop graphical-session.target"
for this, otherwise a unit forgets the PartOf= and that loop would not
work anyway.

> gnome-session needs a fix to its ExecStopPost to not kill the one we
just started.

This is similar to waiting for "deactivating" units after
*-session.target goes down. On the systemd sprint we just figured out a
better scheme for this which solves that waiting, does not require this
session ID tracking, and also gets rid of the manual starting of
graphical-session-pre.target: Eventually we just want to declare in
*-session.target that it comes After=graphical-session-pre.target and
have this propagate to the dependencies
(https://github.com/systemd/systemd/issues/3750). Until then we can just
have a mini-generator do this for us. After we have the Requires/After
=graphical-session-pre.target, then "systemctl stop graphical-session-
pre.target" properly blocks until all "later" units are completely
stopped.

This backtrace is pretty much the same as

also apply to Ubuntu?

Title:
[Lenovo ThinkPad W530] Regression: cannot set up 3 display
  configuration any more (Optimus)

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I cannot set up the third monitor any more (it was working beginning
of March 2016 with Ubuntu 16.04).

The configuration with NVIDIA Optimus starts with builtin display (of
Thinkpad W530) and one of (3K) monitors, the second monitor is
  detected, but not used.

The unity configuration tool shows me two message boxes:

"The selected configuration for displays could not be applied
could not set the configuration for CRTC 64"

  and

  "Failed to apply configuration: %s

GDBus.Error:org.gtk.GDBus.UnmappedGError.Quark._gsd_2drr_2derror_2dquark.Code2:
could not set the configuration for CRTC 64
  "

The first one I have seen at boot time on login screen (with 3
displays) previously, the second one is new.

The third monitor works if Optimus gets disabled in BIOS and the
  machine runs with Nvidia only

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629365] Re: In response of Bug #1551982

2016-10-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Emanuel, thank you for taking the time to report this and helping to
make Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, this report didn't include enough
information. You may find it helpful to read "How to report bugs
effectively" http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html and
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/ReportingBugs . We'd be grateful if you would
then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures

At a minimum, we need:
1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem,
2. The behavior you expected, and
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Thank you for your help.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629546] [NEW] Mouse device grabbed after first login after boot

2016-10-01 Thread Fredrik Öhrström
Public bug reported:

After logging in, after boot, results in less than a minute, in a grabbed mouse
device.
Thus buttonpresses are ignored and I cannot switch windows. Keyboard works
though.

The same behaviour occurs even if using flashback and metacity.

Workaround, ctrl-alt-f1 and then back to alt-f7 releases the grab.

This only happens at the first login after boot. After the workaround,
the system works fine.

This issue is still present on Trusty.

** Summary changed:

+ Suspending while a program is fullscreen

** Description changed:

It would be really useful if you could at least set it so that Ubuntu
does not suspend in a certain amount of time whilst an application is
- full-screen. As I have found this very annoying when streaming, because
- even though the program is full-screen and I am watching something, the
+ fullscreen. As I have found this very annoying when streaming, because
+ even though the program is fullscreen and I am watching something, the
computer thinks that there is no activity and then goes to sleep.

- I understand that not all may want it so that it does not suspend and go to
sleep when an application is full-screen, but at least to have an option to
make it register that an application is full screen and therefore not to go to
sleep.
- You could also be allowed to configure for which applications Ubuntu would
not go to sleep for when they are full-screen.

2016-10-01 Thread Christopher M. Penalver
Nicolas Jungers, to advise, you don't have to apport-collect further
unless specifically requested to do so (also, it doesn't provide any
useful data when you are booted into a mainline kernel).

Despite this, have you had a chance to review the dmesg.log?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629545] [NEW] Selecting a known Hidden Wi-Fi Network does not work: "Connect" button stays disabled

2016-10-01 Thread Alexey
Public bug reported:

When i try to reconnect a previously connected Hidden Wi-Fi Network with
WPA authentication, i cannot: the "Connect" button remains disabled
("grayed out"). I attach a dialog screenshot.

This happens under Ubuntu GNOME 16.04.1 and NixOS 16.03 with GNOME 3
desktop.

I am not completely certain, but i think i remember a similar behaviour
under Debian (or possible under another version of Ubuntu?), except that
at the point where the connection dialog just sits there with a disabled
Connect button, i remember a prompt for password popping up.

As it is impossible to simply select and connect a previously used
connection, i have to create a new one and re-enter the WPA password.

In fact, there is another issue that forces me in the first place to
recreate the same hidden connection over and over: normally it should
connect automatically, but almost every day, after i change a few
networks or restart my home DSL modem, my computer stops connecting
automatically to my hidden home Wi-Fi. However, i have not yet learned
to reproduce this issue, so i am not yet submitting a bug report about
it.

This is what i have found in the Internet that might be relevant:

* [Connect to Hidden...select Saved Secure Connection; Connect not
possible](https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager-applet/+bug/446394)
* [Wifi won't reconnect to hidden
network](https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2326825)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1627496] Re: AMD Radeon hardware features or firmware looked over by Linux 3.6.0+ kernel.

2016-10-01 Thread Valentin Quequet
Hi all,

After my description and with the logs I joined earlier, can we still
blame "xorg" for this bug ?

I very much suggest this be (upstream) "linux" at fault instead.

Another idea ?

Sincerely,
Vécu

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1629530] [NEW] I installed a lubuntu 16.04 and connected to my home network during install but have not been able to successfully connect after installing on my american megeat

2016-10-01 Thread trenessa
Public bug reported:

I'm using a belkin wireless usb adapter to connect to the internet. It
worked fine when installing from usb. Once I installed the OS to the
computer I could see my home network but could not connect to it. It
would ask for the password, I entered it, and it would ask again, and
again, never connecting. If I use my cell phone as a hot spot I connect
instantly. I've spent more than an hour on the phone with my ISP, they
don't think it's them, neither do I. I'm using the same adapter on
another computer also running lubuntu and it works fine. I don't know
if it's related but I can't shutdown my computer without pressing the
power button. I've tried to power off from the terminal, I've tried
adding acpi=force to /etc/default/grub among numerous other
recommendations I've found online. Nothing works.

** Affects: network-manager (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1627769] Re: limits.conf not applied

2016-10-01 Thread Aurélien Leblond
Issue seems to be fixed for me in the latest updates (1st of October).
Could someone confirm it as well?

Title:
  limits.conf not applied

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since upgraded to 16.10 Yakkety, modifications in
/etc/security/limits.conf are not taken into consideration when
  logging in the graphical interface.

  /etc/security/limits.conf:
  @audio   -  rtprio 99
  @audio   -  memlockunlimited

I tried the same settings in /etc/security/limits.d/audio.conf, to the
  same results.

After logging in Unity, opening a console, the limits are not set:
  blablack@ideaon:~$ ulimit -l -r
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64
  real-time priority (-r) 0

Reloging to my user via bash DOES apply the limits:
  blablack@ideaon:~$ ulimit -l -r
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) 64
  real-time priority (-r) 0
  blablack@ideaon:~$ su blablack
  Password:
  blablack@ideaon:~$ ulimit -l -r
max locked memory (kbytes, -l) unlimited
  real-time priority (-r) 95

Switching to a console (ctrl+alt+f1) and logging in would apply the limits as
well.

The exact same setup used to work fine on Xenial 16.04 before upgrade.

If you need any more information, please let me know.
