[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Kai-Heng Feng
After discussion with Kailang, he concludes that it's likely to be a
hardware issue - nothing serious can be done in the software level.

If we introduce the workaround,
- No more static noise in headset
- The headset volume will be drastically decreased, but you can increase the
maximum volume in PA to 150%.
- The traditional microphone can still be used, but without level 2 and 3 amp.

So it's up to you guys - if you guys think it's a fair trade off, I'll
upstream the fixup. If not, there's nothing more we can do in software
level.

XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

Status in Dell Sputnik:

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Pertaining to 16.04 on a dell XPS 13 9360

  ii alsa-base 1.0.25+dfsg-0ubuntu5

Advanced Linux Sound Architecture Driver Version k4.4.0-57-generic.

When headphones are plugged in, there is a clearly audible hiss (white
noise). This is present as soon as the headphones are plugged in, whether
'headphones' or 'headset' are selected from the pop-up box.

Using alsamixer to debug the issue reveals that it is related to
"Headphone Mic Boost" - the default setting is: dB gain 0.00, 0.00. If
  this is changed to:

10.00, 10.00 (one notch up) the hiss disappears.
  20.00, 20.00 cause a louder hiss and
30.00, 30.00 causes an even louder hiss with high frequency audio artifacts.

When the headphones are removed and plugged back in the Headphone Mic
Boost setting returns to dB gain 0 and the problem also returns.

This (problem and workaround) has been reported in the wild:
  https://news.ycombinator.com/item?id=13050843 and

https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/4j1zz4/headphones_have_static_noise_with_ubuntu_1604_on/

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1698287] Re: i965-va-driver fails to load in a Gnome Shell Wayland session

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It seems we're loosely in a deadlock on this one...

The i965 VA driver is failing to load because it's using Xwayland.
Xwayland only supports DRI3, while VA-API only supports DRI2. VA-API
does support native Wayland, but that's not being tried by the video
player apps as first preference. You could call it a bug that the apps
choose X instead of Wayland, and that's easily fixable, but according to
the mpv developers people prefer X in the mpv case because a native
Wayland app has no titlebar or window decorations. But by defaulting to
X, it uses Xwayland which does not support the same DRI interface as VA-
API. Hence VA-API initialization fails.

So there are at least a few possible ways forward:
 * Implement DRI3 support in libva (unlikely to happen soon); or
 * Implement DRI2 support in Xwayland (unlikely to happen ever); or
 * Modify each player app to prioritize checking for Wayland before checking
for X11 (rejected by mpv); or
 * Modify each player app to try vaInitialize multiple times (different display
types) until one works.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Again, if audio quality matters to you, you can also consider a USB DAC
(USB "audio card"). Using the onboard audio socket in any PC is often
prone to system noise.

Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always crashes
during stack-related actions on initialization. This means, the plugin
  completely stopped working.

It works perfectly fine in linux-image-4.4.0-79-generic (vurlerable to
CVE-2017-1000364) as well as linux-image-4.11.6-041106-generic, which also
contains a fix for CVE-2017-1000364.

I tested Oracle Java 1.8 u131 as well as 1.6 u64 in Firefox 51.0.1 as
well as Iceweasel / Firefox/3.5.16 in a chroot.

Using linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic it crashes in all combinations
while with both other kernels it works.

I was not able to obtain any detailed crash information from Firefox 51.0.1,
but Iceweasel 3.5.16 crashed completely, allowing me to obtain a stack trace
which shows the relation to stack operations performed by the plugin, even
without proper debug symbols:

  > (gdb) bt full

I first assumed a bug in the Java plugin, but it works fine in Linux 4.11.6.

The crash will be triggered by any applet, for example the test applet at:

  * https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

I'm running the Ubuntu 16.04 based KDE Neon distribution which somehow
apparently does not allow me to use apport to report this bug:

  > $ LANG= apport-cli linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic

If someone can tell me how to get apport working for this package, I
can use it to collect additional information, but (unfortunately?) the
problem should be fairly easy to reproduce...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Esokrates
Kai: So you are saying the sound card is buggy on a hardware level? Does
this only affect XPS13's or are other Laptops possibly affected too? I
guess all that are using the same soundcard?

How about communicating this to Dell? Or isn't this their fault? Is the
vendor of the sound card to fault? Or is it the headphone jack?

Is a component at fault I could swap on my own?

Daniel: Sry but on all my other laptops even lower end ones this works
satisfying, this is no excuse for Dell selling me this in a flagship model.
This is like selling me a crappy Display and telling me for a good Display I
should use an external one anyway as any Laptop Display is worse than something
I could connect via HDMI.
Furthermore blocking one USB port of only two is not an option for me ... apart
from the fact that this is an ultra compact laptop I do not want to attach any
obstacles to.

Bug description:
Desktop icons slip under the top bar after logging in again.

If I place icons on the desktop in Gnome Shell they look fine, until I
log out and log in again. On the second login they have moved half
  under the top bar.

The same problem is visible in the Ubuntu live session starting with
  20170607.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like the Windows approach of using a noise suppression filter
might generally be a good idea. It's likely Microsoft has seen many more
laptops and desktops with this same problem.

Although I can't help but think that we could still fix this by limiting
the volume more (or finding some gain setting that is on but shouldn't
be). Having headphone volume that doesn't go high enough is already a
common problem plenty of people would be used to. But the important
thing is they won't report that as a bug, so maybe that's better.

Daniel expressed what I meant: it's often hard to avoid noise on onboard audio
chip.
Lots of PCs have background noise - nothing really can be done at software
level.

Kai: Yeah but it would be nevertheless good to communicate that to the right

Is this an integrated component I can't exchange? Is it Intel integrated Audio
or is it an external chip?

Hence I would like to do something on hardware level ... is this not
possible?

He noticed that the Gnome3 new user dialog does not support the
encrypt-home-directory feature that was present in previous versions
  of Gnome.

To solve this, the new user dialog would have a boolean checkbox
(defaulted to un-checked), which asks if this new user's home
directory should be created. Talk to mpt about the wordsmithing. If
checked, then you need to add --encrypt-home to the 'adduser'
invocation. Before running adduser, you'd also need to ensure that
  ecryptfs-utils is installed.

For real security, you would also need to run (as root) ecryptfs-
setup-swap, which would encrypt the user's swap space. This is
necessary, as any files/data that gets swapped out to disk could be
written in the clear, thereby circumventing the user's requested
encryption. Further note that if swap is encrypted, hibernation
should be disabled (suspend continues to work just fine).

IIUC hardware amp (the "Headphone Mic Boost" here) is disabled for
Headphone/Mic/Headset combo jack (which is used on this laptop) on

Esokrates,
The reality is that noise happens on a lot of machines - there are already lots
of noise workaround in ALSA driver - this is just being one of them.

2017-06-29 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It appears the headphone socket is right on the motherboard:
https://www.ifixit.com/Device/Dell_XPS_13

However, whether it's on the motherboard or a daughterboard probably
would not matter in this case. The problem is so prevalent among XPS 13
models that replacing parts probably would not solve the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Esokrates
Kai: I understand what you are saying ... but I would find it great if
you could point that out to Dell ... just because now it is bad, does
not mean it can't be improved in the future. With proper hardware
testing this could have been avoided.

Boost setting returns to dB gain 0 and the problem also returns.

seb128 asked me to file this bug...

I think they are already aware - a quick google on "xps headphone noise"
shows several results, affecting all OS.

So make the fix in the driver is a more practical approach.

Yeah but I don't think it gets through to the right people. If I read most of
the forums discussions no one acknowledges the problem. Only suggestions are to
install the latest drivers.
The 9360 came out one year after the 9350 and still has the same issue. User's
experiences are not that grave compared to driver developers that point out an
issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1654448] Re: XPS 13 9360 and 9350, Realtek ALC3246, Headphone audio hiss

2017-06-29 Thread Esokrates
Kai, Thank you very much for looking into this and answering questions. Kudos!
I think the behavior should remain as it is if the output volume is reduced
that much AND support for microphone devices is crippled.
My arguments: It is still better to hear the hiss when music is at low volume
than have low output volume enforced (on high output volume you do not notice
the hiss) and additionally lose some functionality.

If you could manage that classic microphones remain operable I would
vote for inclusion.

linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic appears to contain a regression, probably
related to the CVE-2017-1000364 fix backport / patch.

  * https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

  4) gnome-keyring is not unlocked, chrome takes 2 minutes to open and with no

For the past couple days, chrome on Ubuntu 16.04 takes a REALLY long
time (maybe 2 minutes) to start. Once chrome is started, I am not able
to sync and any secure password features are broken. I found out this
is due to gnome-keyring not being unlocked at login. There's also no
way to unlock the "login" portion of the keyring from the running
daemon by default. I have to kill the gnome-keyring process and start
without "--login" as a parameter. Then the "login" section shows up
which I'm able to unlock. From there chrome starts up instantly but
  asks the following:

Enter password to unlock your login keyring
The login keyring did not get unlocked when you logged into your computer

After that, all of it's sync and secure features are functional.

Starting google-chrome-stable from a command line at boot without
running the above workaround shows the following error messages:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 25708] Re: Should not force to configure a mail account to use the calendar

** Changed in: evolution
   Status: Confirmed => Fix Released

Title:
Should not force to configure a mail account to use the calendar

Status in Evolution:
  Fix Released
Status in evolution package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid

Bug description:
The gnome calendar is integrated with evolution. Good thing. Now, when I
install
ubuntu and try to add a event to the calendar, a wizard is launched asking me
to
  tell my email account (!!)

I don't have an email account, I use gmail. And anyway - I'm trying to add a
calendar event, nothing related at all with email. But it's worse, apparently
I
can't launch evolution without configuring an email account. It asks me to
configure my outgoing email, and I can't get rid of that screen by setting my
outgoing email to "sendmail" (which is somewhat weird since ubuntu doesn't
install senamdil, maybe it wants to mean "local email server") It also asks me
to set my local time configuration, despite of having already set that to
  "Europe/Madrid" in the install...

IOW: I don't think that it should annoy the user at all when adding a calendar
  event.

IOW: I don't think that it should annoy the user at all when adding a calendar
  event.

XFCE under VMware WS Pro 12.5.7 build-5813279) fixed my problems with
"jsvc" (starting "tomcat" 8.5.16) and kernel 4.10.0-24.28 ... catching
"signal 11" immediately after start.

Many thanks to all of You, having helped to solve the problem!

Bug description:
Distribution: Ubuntu 16.04 x64 (Flavour: KDE Neon User Edition 5.10)

linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic appears to contain a regression, probably
related to the CVE-2017-1000364 fix backport / patch.

Using this kernel, the Oracle Java browser plugin always crashes
during stack-related actions on initialization. This means, the plugin
  completely stopped working.

It works perfectly fine in linux-image-4.4.0-79-generic (vurlerable to
CVE-2017-1000364) as well as linux-image-4.11.6-041106-generic, which also
contains a fix for CVE-2017-1000364.

  uname -a:

  > Linux Zweiblum 4.4.0-81-generic #104-Ubuntu SMP Wed Jun 14 08:17:06
  UTC 2017 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux

  > #0 0x7fa06d805307 in _expand_stack_to(unsigned char*) () from
/opt/java-8-oracle/jre/lib/amd64/server/libjvm.so

  > #4

I first assumed a bug in the Java plugin, but it works fine in Linux 4.11.6.

The crash will be triggered by any applet, for example the test applet at:

  * https://java.com/en/download/installed8.jsp

I'm running the Ubuntu 16.04 based KDE Neon distribution which somehow
apparently does not allow me to use apport to report this bug:

  > $ LANG= apport-cli linux-image-4.4.0-81-generic
  >

and try again.

If someone can tell me how to get apport working for this package, I
can use it to collect additional information, but (unfortunately?) the
problem should be fairly easy to reproduce...

01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation GT218 [NVS
  3100M] (rev a2)

If I configure an external monitor (using nvidia-settings) and put it
above or below my laptop's monitor, the panel at the top of the
external monitor is missing. This causes issues with the menus for
any programs on the external monitor (unless I disable unified menus)
and causes problems for applications that are maximized (since they
have no titlebar and no unmaximize button).

I also note that if I put the external monitor above my laptop's
screen, the laptop does is not treated as the main display, even
though it is marked as such in the nvidia-settings (unlike normal
unity, which places the main interface on the laptop even when the
laptop is not the "highest" display).

Note that this bug is not related to #842745, since that is talking
about the launcher and monitors that are not aligned on the left.
Though my monitors are of differing size, they are aligned on the left
  edge.

  Steps to Repro

  1. Open the Dash.
  2. Perform search with large number of results (say "e").
  3. Expand all the groups by clicking the "Show X more results" buttons.
  4. Using the arrow keys, navigate to the second-last row of icons in the
Applications group.
  5. Press the following key combination: up, down, right, left.

  Expected Result
  ---
When you press right & left, the grid should not move up or down.

  Actual Result
  ---
The grid moves up when you press right, and down when you press left.

Pressing left & right again works ok. You need to press up & down
  beforehand.

The attached video will show best what I mean.

  looks really bad.

  How to reproduce:
  1. Install any application which have own indicator like Transmission,
Dropbox, Radio Tray or anything else.
  2. Start this application.
  3. Close this application.

  Actual results:
  1. After step two all indicators on panel to the right from newly added
indicator will jump to the right (powerbutton indicator will fall to offscreen
space). Then after ~1 second all indicators jumps to the left on right place.
  2. After step three all indicators on panel to the right from removed
indicator jumps to the right (there is gap after poserbutton indicator). Then
after ~1 second all indicators jumps to the left on right place.

  Expected results:
In both cases only left part of indicators list should jump and powerbutton
indicator must stay in place like this set of indicators adjusted to the right
side. Small animation with indicators moving to the left or to the right when
one added/removed will be fine too.

Title:
workspaces has one too many states and prevents launching apps

Status in Ayatana Design:
  New
Status in unity-2d:

Status in unity-2d package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
The bug is that one cannot launch an application directly after
  selecting a workspace in Workspaces.

To explain and to understand my proposed solution:

   * Normal work condition is one workspace active: Let's call this "State One"
   * When you click Workspaces on the launcher, the four workspaces are
displayed: "State Two"
   * You then click one, and it expands to almost, but not quite, fill the
desktop area: "State Three"

If you then click an icon on the launcher from State Three: nothing
  launches. This feels broken.

I propose that State Three adds nothing, creates this problem, and
  should be eliminated.

Instead, when in State two (the four workspaces all displayed), and
you click one, it should become selected and active. That is, you
should transition to State One with your selected workspace the active
one. Thus you can immediately click launcher icons. No State Three.

A rationale for State Three was that when all workspaces are shown
(State Two), they are scaled down and may be difficult to see, so
let's give the user the chance to enlarge it before selecting it. I
don't see how that is any better than _actually_ selecting it. If they
selected the wrong one, they can just click Workspaces again and
  select another one.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: unity-2d

If unity-2d-panel is started while Compiz is running, indicators do not
appear. Instead, a window titled "" appears and vanishes quickly. That
window either
   1. is the height of the panel and contains the panel background
   2. is maybe 100-200 pixels high and contains the panel background several
times, tiled.
It has a width of also about 100-200 pixels. I didn't manage to capture a
screenshot yet, unfortunately.

The single legacy system tray icon is broken as well, it appears on
the far left of the panel, on top of the Ubuntu button. The icon
works, though sometimes the icon itself doesn't display correctly.

This does seem related to https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-
  2d/+bug/718512 and https://bugs.launchpad.net/unity-2d/+bug/703542,
but I think it's a different issue since it appears to be inherently
linked to Compiz. If the panel is launched while Metacity or no window
manager is running, it works. Similarly, if the panel is running and
Compiz is launched, it keeps working. If the panel is then killed and

Bug description:
In Unity 3D or Classic, when I select the Bookmarks menu in Firefox
4.0.1 (which is too long to fit vertically on the screen) I see a
single column with scroll arrows at top and bottom. In Unity-2D I get
a multi column view. I realise this may just be a setting somewhere,
but if so it should arguably default to single column for consistency.

In addition the items in the bookmarks menu do not have icons
alongside (as they do in Classic and U3D). Perhaps this should be a
separate bug. I was not sure whether to put this against Unity-2D or
Firefox. Hopefully someone will redirect it if it should be under
  Firefox.

Using Unity-2D from daily ppa, 3.8.4.1-0ubuntu2~bzr560

 I'm running Ubuntu 11.04 with Unity-2d.
What happened: i opened nautilus and pressed Alt+b to bring up the
"Bookmarks" menu. Then pressed "a" to "Add bookmark". Worked fine. Then i
clicked on the area in nautilus where my files are listed and pressed Alt+b
again. The "Bookmarks" menu in nautilus was summoned, however, the subsequent
keystrokes had no effect - i had to left-click on the title of the window, as
if removing focus from the previously selected area. It not only happens with
the bookmarks menu, but pretty much with any other shortcut i use.
The very same behavior was noticed in Firefox (Thunderbird, Remmina and
Arora too, which is why I assumed it's a Unity-2d bug): in Firefox, i created a
new tab and tried Alt+t to summon the "Tools" menu, then pressed "h" to bring
up the "Clear All History" menu - it worked. Then i created another tab and
clicked on the blank area where the pages are displayed and tried again. Alt+t
successfully brought up the "Tools" menu, but subsequent keystrokes had no
effect. What is more, if i click on the Location area, all the keys I press
after Alt+t are typed into it. This makes keyboard shortcuts rather
uncomfortable to use in Unity-2d.

If a window is too large to fit completely on the screen (at least I think
that is the trigger) then using Super D twice results in the window being
maximised.
I see this easily as I have two screens side by side, one taller than the
other. If I make a window on the tall screen close to full height, drag it to
the smaller screen, then hit Super D twice the window is maximised.
The symptom can be reproduced on a single screen by making the window nearly
full height, dragging the window down so half of it is off the bottom of the
screen, then expanding the top of the window up. Then Super D twice.

devices exist with the same SoC in htcleo (qsd8250) using same dsp => same
framebuffer driver, this problem is likely to occur on several other devices.
Thanks to Ricardo Salvetti (rsalvetti on irc.freenode.net #ubuntu-arm) I now
have this problem solved locally:
When I run the unity-2d-* binaries like this:
"unity-2d-launcher -graphicssystem native" it works without any graphical
glitch. To automate it I moved all /usr/bin/unity-2d-* to
/usr/bin/unity-2d-*-bin and created scripts in /usr/bin/unity-2d-* with
"unity-2d-*-bin -graphicssystem -native" for each binary. With that workaround
I get a (partially, see below) working unity-2d session on my device with
msm-fb framebuffer driver!

Is there a way to configure this? If not, can we get one?

Best regards and thanks again to Ricardo,

  Lukas
