Public bug reported: After opening gnome software, it starts taking more and more memory in big chunks, around 80MB per second. While I'm writing this report it has already taken 3.1GB of memory. As time passes it also asks more CPU, taking sometimes up to 33% on my machine. Reproduce: - kill any instance of gnome software - open gnome software - watch it eat all your memory This doesn't happen every time. When it happened to me I had just killed gnome software because it was taking a lot of CPU. It is as if the keyboard was not switched at all and the layout stays at US-EN. For example pressing + c should yield č but it instead prints +c. Previously this randomly failed in some apps, e.g. it worked in Libre Office Writer but did not work in Konsole; now it doesn't work at all. Pressing 3 should yield š but instead types 3. Thanks! FWIW: Jamie, while reviewing the Debian..Ubuntu packaging log in order to merge the Ubuntu one into the Debian source package, I see a few instances of duplicate packaging work going on (e.g. the fix for this bug, upstart job removal). Such duplicate work could have been avoided by merging from Debian first… which would also have avoided mistakes like keeping the obsolete ubuntu-manpage-updates.patch, and removing the initscript by mistake to re-add it 3 versions later. Up until recently, I've been able to scan fine with my Canon Pixma
MX7600. Then I upgraded to Ubuntu Wily and I've started getting:

It appears to me that the scanner is responding but the driver doesn't

It appears to me that the scanner is responding but the driver doesn't
like the response. I'm running sane 1.0.14-11 and sane-utils

Bug description:
When querying nl_langinfo() for the language name of bn_BD.UTF-8, it
outputs the string "BengaliBangla", which of course looks a little
weird. The source file locales/bn_BD states the language
"Bengali/Bangla" with a slash.
A better name would be just "Bangla", since that's the official name
of the language spoken in Bangladesh, and the native Bangla speakers
seems to prefer it; please see bug #991002. The iso-codes package will
soon provide translations of the name "Bangla", bug AFAIK noone
provides translations of the string "Bengali/Bangla".
But at least the bn_BD locale should be corrected so nl_langinfo()
returns the string "Bengali/Bangla" including the slash.
Two alternative patches have been attached to this bug report. One
just escapes the slash ("Bengali//Bangla") to address the slash issue.
The other patch changes the language in both bn_BD and bn_IN to
Bangla. I involve bn_IN, since it's confusing in e.g. lists of locales
that two locales use different English names for the same language.
Please pick the patch that fits best. ;-)
Let's talk about possible forwarding upstream when it has been decided
which route to take.

If I install the proprietary nvidia drivers, I can properly set up my xorg.conf and the Xorg driver as well as the kernel module load correctly. However, when using unity or anything requiring libglx.so, X simply crashes. The reason is that X is loading the wrong libglx.so: grep glx /var/log/Xorg.0.log [ 11312.722] (II) "glx" will be loaded. This was enabled by default and also specified in the config file. [ 11312.722] (II) LoadModule: "glx" [ 11312.722] (II) Loading /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so [ 11312.722] (II) Module glx: vendor="X.Org Foundation" My first solution was to move /usr/lib/xorg/modules/extensions/libglx.so out of the way and to replace it with a symlink to /usr/lib/nvidia-VERSION/xorg/libglx.so. However, as you might imagine, this quick-and-dirty fix has to be redone each time that MESA gets updated, as my symlink is destroyed. I have now found a better solution, which consists in telling Xorg where the right library is in /etc/X11/xorg.conf Section "Files" ModulePath "/usr/lib/nvidia-VERSION/xorg" ModulePath "/usr/lib/xorg/modules" ... EndSection nvidia-VERSION has to be replaced by the proper nvidia version (such as nvidia-current). As a result, X loads the right libglx.so. This solution could be included in all nvidia- packages, so that the problem does not occur any longer. I have found other bug reports from other distributions about this, but most are solved by moving libglx.so out of the way. In fact, the layout indicator is there even in the default layout, however clicking it does not work anyway (you see it change but it does not affect the layout) See also issues #1612910, #1699670 and #879916 which appear to be duplicates. For the time being (cups-filters 1.17.4) I have now applied a solution where pdftopdf detects PDF forms using QPDF (thanks to Tobias Hoffmann, smilingthax) and if there is a form uses and external utility for the flattening, preferrably pdftocairo, if not present, Ghostscript. After the flattening the original treatment by QPDF is performed. If none of the utilities is available, no form-flattening is performed (but as cups-filters-core-drivers depends on poppler-utils, pdftocairo is always there). The originally planned QPDF-based solution is still in the works and will most probably added in a later release of cups-filters. Public bug reported: When I try to move a file that's on the Desktop to another folder holding the shift after having clicked on it and started dragging it to the destination folder, the mouse pointer from an arrow becomes a hand and after this you are unable to click on other files or folders, even in Firefox you are unable to open another tab by clicking on the plus near the other tabs. To reproduce the bug: Open Files. Click on a file on the Desktop. Start dragging it to another folder in Files and while dragging press the shift key. The mouse arrow becomes a hand. Try to click on another file, you won't be able to. Open Firefox and try to open another tab, you won't be able to. This also affected my machines. Thanks to the forum reference I was able to piece together this: The file belonging to network-manager /usr/lib/NetworkManager/conf.d/10 -globally-managed-devices.conf contains: [keyfile] unmanaged-devices=*,except:type:wifi,except:type:wwan Curiously, at least on my machines, this also knocked out "gsm" type connection which made me offline as I rely on 3G connections often. The "solution" is to create an empty file at /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf the presence of which overrides the distribution packaged default. Looking at the changelog I see that the new conf.d file is a debian addition. The relevant changelog says: * network-manager.postinst: Don't create /etc/NetworkManager/conf.d/10-globally-managed-devices.conf override on new installations. Installing ubuntu-standard hasn't changed anything. I wonder how this was expected to work on upgrades. Probably it would allow you to set it to: - about:newtab (Default New Tab page) - about:blank (Blank page) - about:home (Default Firefox home page) But nothing else so there shouldn't be any security issues around New Tab hijacking. Another thing to add, if this does get implemented then I think that the settings should also be accessible through about:preferences and not just about:config as these are essential settings like the home page and will be useful for all users and not just advanced ones. That would appear to be consistent, but consistency might be a bad thing here. I feel we're going too far with the strong purple and brighter orange than previous releases. Maybe we should tone it back a bit instead. I feel Ubuntu orange on Ambiance grey is nice and modern. Fresh install on image of 09/10 updated, an nvidia hybrid laptop, nothing has changed. 1. 1st login from install uses xorg 2. All logins always say "ubuntu" 3. No matter what session is exited from #2 remains always true So with above being true, at best a user does an install, logs in & is using xorg. They may or may not check the reported session by clicking on that little login screen icon. If they were expecting wayland then the impression would be 'it works pretty good' (wonder why? They may never change sessions from the login screen so will continue to use xorg. Or they may open the login options, see xorg & decide to see how that works compared to 'pseudo wayland' Again everything will work fine, may seem like not much difference between wayland & xorg (wonder why? So really the biggest issue is #2 from above, the login screen needs to report the actual session to be used from 1st login on. I think the default login screen uses the US keyboard layout only, so there would be no way to type '€'. This design presumably is to allow for the case that multiple users of the same PC might want different languages. So before you know which user it is, you need to assume the lowest common denominator (US keyboard). This might be related to the setting "org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor", because if I manually set it to zero (gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface scaling-factor 0), g-c-c now can change the display resolution. I logged bug https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gnome-control- center/+bug/1716322 for my issue (g-c-c can't change display settings due to scale factor 2). I think we need a separate bug for not remembering the settings after a restart because this bug thinks it's fixed, and I think it's a bug in gnome settings daemon rather than g-c-c. I find Artful to be pretty flaky at the moment when restarting - sometimes it remembers my settings, sometimes it doesn't; sometimes I get a Wayland session but sometimes I get an X11 session (even though I've always selected the Wayland option at login). Sometimes the Wayland session crashes. In X11 I can change the resolution using xrandr, but not in Wayland. Hulu reports error 3302. This does not happen for all titles, only
some which use Flash DRM. The Flash plugin downloads and installs the
library/module/plugin/whatever it needs, but it fails to load because
of apparmor.
