Bug description:
Some religious as well as regional calendars (e.g.: the Japanese
calendar) start the week with Sunday as opposed to Monday. I think
that there should be an option in the gnome-tweak-tool to make it so
that the weeks are displayed as starting on Sunday in the built-in
  calendar accessible from the top-bar.

This can already be done manually, but an option in the GUI would be
  nice.

Bug description:
In 0.91 the z-order information in svg is used to create multipage
PDF+LaTeX documents as per bug 771957. However, for the SVGs I have
been converting to PDF+LaTeX in this way, the TeX-file instructs to
load more pages than the PDF has, for example the PDF has only three
pages and the TeX file also includes page=4. This basically breaks the
PDF+LaTeX export for me and I have to use EPS+LaTeX + epstopdf
  package.

The bug occurs on OpenSuse 13.1 and Windows 8.1.

Attached a zip file with two svg files and their broken PDF+LaTeX
  counterparts.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1417470] Re: PDF+Latex export creates multipage pdf, pages missing

2017-11-24 Thread Eduard Braun
As the previous fix only worked around the issue by adding blank pages to the
output I had another shot at fixing this. I created a merge request with a
"proper" fix that actually outputs partial renderings of the final document
which can then be stacked in the LaTeX document with the text sandwiched in
between, see
https://gitlab.com/inkscape/inkscape/merge_requests/135

As the renderer (especially the hack we use to make PDF+LaTeX work) is a
fragile thing and I'm not too familiar with it yet this requires a lot
of testing. I'd appreciate if you could check with your own samples if
Inkscape produces proper output.

Attached is an example document that should highlight the new

Title:
PDF+Latex export creates multipage pdf, pages missing

Status in Inkscape:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1731796] Re: NMI watchdog: BUG: soft lockup - CPU#0 stuck for 23s! [gdbus:2878]

2017-11-24 Thread Arlie Stephens
Happened again. Auto-bug reporting didn't recognize this report as
similar, so created bug 1734405

Note - compiz was in Z state (per top), consuming 100% of a cpu (per
top) throughout the incident. I was able to login via ssh and look at
things.

I don't believe that a stuck compiz process could be caused by soft
lockups. So the compiz process *may* be closer to the root cause?

This is a bug report about errors during the upgrade process. I don't
know whether or not my samba installation was working immediately
before the upgrade; the windows box that was intended to be a client
died and has not been replaced. Don't believe my answers to the forced
  questions.

  ***

My ubuntu system locks up regularly. Bugs I've reported about this get
closed for inattention, after being ignored, and queries about how to
do basic debugging get the same treatment, so I just power cycle
  whenever it happens again.

This time the lock up happened while the GUI upgrade-everything-to-
  latest tool was running.

When I power cycled the box to recover, the system was unusable -
flashing "system problem detected" popups, none staying stable long
  enough to respond.

ssh + "sudo apt-get update" + "sudo apt-get upgrade" pointed me to
  "sudo dpkg --configure -a"

That command reported numerous errors - I don't know which of them are
"normal" for this system, but hidden by the GUI, and which are new.

But it got the system semi-usable from the GUI, so now I'm clicking on
"yes, report it" for the many pop-ups, of which this is one.

FWIW, samba is one of the ones "dpkg --reconfigure -a" complained
  about.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1653873] Re: gnome-calendar desktop file claims text/calendar mime support, but doesn't actually open such files

Title:
gnome-calendar desktop file claims text/calendar mime support, but
  doesn't actually open such files

Status in GNOME Calendar:
  Expired
Status in gnome-calendar package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  release: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  package version: 3.20.4-0ubuntu0.1

Expected behavior: gnome-calendar displays text/calendar file contents
OR doesn't report support for such files so that some other
  application will be used.

Observed behavior: gnome-calendar registers itself as supporting
text/calendar files, but doesn't actually open them, at least not on
launch by an external program, such as any mailcap program or
Nautilus. From Nautilus, gnome-calendar never opens. From mailcap
applications, gnome-calendar opens but just shows a calendar.

  Additional details:

Found when using a mail client that uses mailcap to find programs to
open attachments. The /etc/mailcap file claims that, to open files of
type text/calendar (e.g. *.ics files), one should run 'gnome-calendar
%s' replacing %s with the filename:

text/calendar; gnome-calendar %s; test=test -n "$DISPLAY"

I found via tracing that this line comes from when the update-mime
  program parses /usr/share/applications/org.gnome.Calendar.desktop from
the gnome-calendar package, which includes the line

MimeType=text/calendar;

The actual behavior of running gnome-calendar in this way is that it
ignores the file argument and just shows a calendar and does not view
  the file specified.

Relatedly, this desktop file also seems to result in Nautilus thinking
that gnome-calendar should open a .ics file, but when opening a file
via nautilus, I get an indicator showing that gnome-calendar is
launching, but no window opens and the indicator eventually times out.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1734388] Re: LibreOffice Snap version is not recognizing the word accent keys.

2017-11-24 Thread Olivier Tilloy
Can you please elaborate on what you mean by accent keys?

I'm using a French keyboard layout where "é" and "è" are primary keys,
and they are input correctly in libreoffice. I also tested a Spanish
layout with a dead key for the acute accent, and I was able to input
letters such as "é" by combining the dead key and "e".

I'm not familiar with Portuguese layouts, please explain how you input
accentuated characters and how it's not working. Thanks!

Bug description:
This problem has plagued me for a few years across different laptops
and Ubuntu versions. Current I am experiencing this on a Dell Inspiron
  15z running Ubuntu 14.04 LTS.

It typically starts after I have used the chat or call feature in
gmail, by clicking on the phone icon in the left chat margin. I am a
Firefox user and have not tested this with chrome etc. It has not
happened if i dont install google-talkplugin so it is quite possible
that the plugin is to blame.

  Symptom
  ===
The left mouse button on all attached mice - USB , Trackpad and touch - will
not do anything however the right mouse button continues to work. This
happens to all applications and also to the desktop. The keyboard continues to
function as normal.

When this occurs , my solution is to Alt-F4 close all windows and log
out of the X session. When I re-login the left mouse button works as
  normal.

This is an irritant and work disruptor as I have to save all browser and
desktop applications to safe state before I logout to reset the mouse. I will
appreciate any soltion or workaround.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1694225] Re: [Thinkpad T450s] Click lock effect on trackpoint left button when touchpad is disabled

2017-11-24 Thread James Ward
In my case I want to disable the touchpad completely :)

Title:
[Thinkpad T450s] Click lock effect on trackpoint left button when
  touchpad is disabled

Status in xserver-xorg-input-synaptics package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Click lock is a behavior where you do a button click once, the system
will register the click as "holding the button".

In laptop Thinkpad T450s I have an issue where the disabled touchpad
sometimes could trigger the click lock when clicking the trackpoint
  (red pointing stick)'s left button.

Basically it happens randomly when my palm is touching the touchpad
while I'm clicking the trackpoint left button.

But I found a way to make the bug occurs easily:
  1. Disable the touchpad first. You can do this from ubuntu's "Mouse &
Touchpad" setting.

  2. Put your two fingers on the touchpad (whether your two fingers are
tapping or pressing the clickpad, it doesn't matter). You could use
your left hand's index and middle finger for this.

  3. While your left hand's two fingers are on the touchpad, use your
right hand to click the trackpoint's left button once (don't hold it)
on the desktop area, then immediately move the cursor with the
  pointing stick.

  4. If the click lock effect gets triggered, you would see you make a
selection drag on the desktop area. If the click lock doesn't happen,
  repeat again the step 3.

The evtest log on the trackpoint:

  $evtest /dev/input/event15

  Input driver version is 1.0.1
Input device ID: bus 0x11 vendor 0x2 product 0xa version 0x0
Input device name: "TPPS/2 IBM TrackPoint"

Event type 2 (EV_REL)
  Event code 0 (REL_X)
  Event code 1 (REL_Y)

  Event: time 1496047216.720823, -- SYN_REPORT
  Event: time 1496047216.778898, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 272 (BTN_LEFT), value 0
  Event: time 1496047216.778898, -- SYN_REPORT
  Event: time 1496047220.234518, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 272 (BTN_LEFT), value 1
  Event: time 1496047220.234518, -- SYN_REPORT

If the click lock is not triggered, you would see BTN_LEFT's value 1 & 0:

  Event: time 1496047216.720823, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 272 (BTN_LEFT), value 1
  Event: time 1496047216.778898, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 272 (BTN_LEFT), value 0

But if the click lock is triggered, you would only see value 1:

  Event: time 1496047220.234518, type 1 (EV_KEY), code 272 (BTN_LEFT),
  value 1

I am guessing "value 0" means release the button. So when click lock
is happening, the button left is not released at all, thus it's
  producing "hold the button" effect.

  More Informations:
This issue doesn't happen on other OS like Windows, but I can confirm it
happens on most modern linux distro and DE I've tried (e.g. ubuntu v17/v16,
kubuntu, ubuntu mate, xubuntu, lubuntu, linux mint, fedora, open suse, etc). So
this issue must be coming from the synaptic touchpad driver, or maybe from the
kernel (?)

Also, the issue doesn't occur on older thinkpad models which doesn't
use same clickpad type touchpad, e.g. T430 or X230. For newer thinkpad
models (e.g. T460, X260, etc) which uses same clickpad design, same
issue might exists too (need confirmation though).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1730399] Re: Add krackattacks mitigation

Title:
  Add krackattacks mitigation

Status in wpa package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  See for reference:
  https://www.krackattacks.com/#ap-mitigations

Yes this is not a bug. However, it has been noted on ubuntu-devel that adding
some features even to stable releases could be justified in *some* cases.
First of paramount importance is that the fix introduces no regression.
In this case this code is *only* used if a new parameter is set:

  wpa_disable_eapol_key_retries=1

if this parameter is missing, behaviour will not change.
So any regression introduced will be caused by a deliberate admin decision,
from where all responsability could be denied (use at your own risk, yadda,
yadda...)

Then is this parameter useful: it could be for the hundred of millions
of Android Phone that are not yet patched (6.0 et upper) and will
never be patched (about 50% of existing Android Phones).

Please note that at least one wifi provider has already decided to
provide this feature to help its users:

  https://tools.cisco.com/security/center/content/CiscoSecurityAdvisory
  /cisco-sa-20171016-wpa

so this is something that leaders do :-)

I have already patched my AP that runs Ubuntu 16 LTS (see attached
patch against 2.4-0ubuntu6.2, I have used my AP for 3 days now with a
Ubuntu and an Android client without problem) and I could try to
provide a patch for Ubuntu 17. This kind of patch is really trivial
anyway, since it's just a port of the upstream patch in hostapd:

  https://w1.fi/cgit/hostap/commit/?id=6f234c1e2ee1ede29f2412b7012b3345ed8e52d3

However I have a big problem. Any security patch (and this is a security
enhancing patch at least) is only worth as much as it is *tested*. And I don't
have the means to verify that mitigation is effective, as the vulnerability
discoverer has not provided (for obvious reasons) public testing code for
clients.
I think that Ubuntu should have this code (or did you just distribute
security patches without testing that they are effective ? that would not be
very serious IMO).
There is no chance that M. Vanhoef sends his code to any old dog on the
internet, so Canonical is my only chance for a real test of this feature on an
Ubuntu AP (short of rewriting the attack code myself, not an attractive
proposition).
If in fact you don't have the testing (well, attack) code feel free to
dismiss my bug report as irrelevant. But if you have please consider the
opportunity to add some goodwill to Ubuntu. Thanks.

This bug was introduced with 17.10. This flickering didn't appear in
  17.04, 16.10, 16.04...

Working as a developer with several open terminal windows on the

by covering not used terminal windows complete with other apps.

Haven't reproduced with other apps than gnome-terminal.

Seems that command solves the issue but there is a drawback, it disables
the touchpad completely. Even "Enable Touchpad" option in the mouse &
touchpad GUI setting and xinput set-prop "Device Enabled" command won't

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1733616] Re: X crashes on VT switch

2017-11-24 Thread Simon Rettberg
The same problem exists in the xf86-video-amdgpu driver. The bug was fixed
upstream as well:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-amdgpu/commit/?id=55396cc45c9aae3b1985ced1044b6b93064667c3
(this time, 3 commits after 1.4.0 release which is shipped in Ubuntu 17.10)

** Also affects: xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu (Ubuntu)
   Importance: Undecided
   Status: New

Title:
  X crashes on VT switch

Status in xserver-xorg-video-amdgpu package in Ubuntu:
  New
Status in xserver-xorg-video-ati package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  On Ubuntu 17.10 x64

Version 7.10 of xf-86-video-ati crashes the xserver as soon as you switch to
another VT. The bug has been fixed upstream:
https://cgit.freedesktop.org/xorg/driver/xf86-video-ati/commit/?id=34da04daec82077571558ac3fe1ec0c1203a01ad
I compiled the code from that commit and replaced radeon_drv.so. The issue
was gone.

The package should be updated to at least this commit (which is just
one commit after the official 7.10 release of the driver).

  Happened on a Radeon HD 8570 / R7 240/340 (1002:6611)

Steps to reproduce: On a machine with a radeon card, start an X
session (login manager is enough), then switch to another VT (e.g.
  Ctrl+Alt+F1)

  Result: server crashes.

Expected result: x server not crashing so it's possible to switch back
  to the x session.

2017-11-24 Thread Ricky Seltzer
Public bug reported:

Just came out of several hours of hibernation and load average was a
high 10. It's never that high when I use this fast machine. Htop says
big CPU user was Thunderbird.

Before I put the system in hibernation I was trying out Firefox quantum. It
seemed nice.
I closed Firefox before going into hibernation.

While typing this apport popped up with a gnome-shell error.

I haven't used the scanner in weeks. And I've rebooted since then.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1722708] Re: Crash when setting laptop display resolution

2017-11-24 Thread Frode Solheim
This problem still affects me:
- I got a full HD monitor (1920x1080) connected via HDMI.
- Laptop display with internal resolution 3200x1800.

If I try to change the laptop display to 1600x900 (custom added
resolution btw) to use 100% window scaling on both monitors, I'm
instantly returned to the login screen (resolution changes are not
applied). This happens every time I try to do this.

However, I was able to change the laptop monitor resolution to
1920x1080! And, afterwards, I could even successfully change to
1600x900.

Title:
Crash when setting laptop display resolution

Status in xorg package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
This system has a 4k laptop screen with resolution 3840x2160, and an
external HP monitor connected via HDMI, resolution 1920x1200. Windows,
fonts etc are not scaled properly on the external monitor (too large,
etc), and the only workaround I've found with earlier versions and
other distros is to set the laptop display to 1920x1080 mode, so
that's what I'm trying here as well.

However, when doing that, the X (wayland, not sure if the package is
correct here) session crashes and brings me back to login screen.

So to summarize: connect the external monitor, go to Settings >
Devices > Displays, click primary built in display, observe that it
shows Resolution 3840x2160 (16:9) and Scale 200%, change resolution to
  1920x1080 (16:9), click Apply --> crash.

2017-11-24 Thread Muelli
wait a second. That string doesn't look right, i.e. Version: 5.4.2.2
does not look like it's been downgraded. I expected 5.4.1. But I can't
make it show that. It seems that the libreoffice-common package is
defining that version string. That is indeed a newer version here for
me. Downgrading that seems to incur some other trouble:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1734132] Re: LibreOffice doesn't seem to have a right click context-menu

2017-11-24 Thread Muelli
Downgrading libreoffice-gtk3 to

Version: 5.4.2.2
Build ID: 1:5.4.2-0ubuntu0.17.10.1
CPU threads: 4; OS: Linux 4.13; UI render: default; VCL: gtk3;
Locale: en-US (en_US.UTF-8); Calc: group

exposes the same behaviour.

Without scaling, it still behaves weird. The context menu is way off,
like half a screen away from where I right-clicked. I hope it's visible
in the attached screenshot.

Title:
LibreOffice doesn't seem to have a right click context-menu

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

  1) Run
  libreoffice -env:UserInstallation=file:///tmp/tmp_profile

  2) Create a new writer document.

  3) Type some silly stuff

  4) Right click on a word

I'd expect a context menu to be shown, but there is none.
The mouse cursor changes though as if the context menu was shown. Pressing
Escape make the cursor return to the normal caret.

The attached screenshot is not really telling much. You can see how
there is no context menu although I've just right clicked. The mouse
  cursor changed.

Title:
  17.10 - flickering overlay patterns in gnome-terminal

Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Clean install of Ubuntu 17.10.

For gnome-terminal select color-scheme "black on light yellow".

Overlay partly with e.g. Chrome (Browser) or Geany (editor). Then the
border shadow of the e.g. Geany produces flickering extended shadows
in the gnome-terminal. Foto with the extended shadows is attached.

This bug was introduced with 17.10. This flickering didn't appear in
  17.04, 16.10, 16.04...

Working as a developer with several open terminal windows on the
desktop, this produces a disturbing desktop environment and mitigated
by covering not used terminal windows complete with other apps.

Haven't reproduced with other apps than gnome-terminal.

  Hardware
  Lenovo Thinkpad e330, cpu : Intel(R) Core(TM) i5-3210M CPU @ 2.50GHz
  gpu Builtin : HD 4000

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1700465] Re: gnome-shell --replace does not work: Can't initialize KMS backend: Could not get session ID: No such file or directory

2017-11-24 Thread dino99
@Daniel

this is what i get now with fresh artful & bionic installs: i can only
login with Xorg, when sometimes ago, with the same hardware & a zesty ->
artful dist-upgrade, wayland was used without problem.

So is mutter faulty here, or ubuntu-drivers-common or libinput, as the
system choose the fallback way (which is wrong: skylake gt2 igp (only))

But setting to 'low' priority might be set higher as wayland is the
default now.

 sudo dbus-run-session -- gnome-shell --display-server --wayland
[sudo] password for oem:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1716203] Re: Backport packages for 16.04.4 HWE stack

2017-11-24 Thread Adam Conrad
Hello Timo, or anyone else affected,

Accepted xorg-server-hwe-16.04 into xenial-proposed. The package will
build now and be available at https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/xorg-
server-hwe-16.04/2:1.19.5-0ubuntu2~16.04.1 in a few hours, and then in
the -proposed repository.

Please help us by testing this new package. See
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed for documentation on how
to enable and use -proposed.Your feedback will aid us getting this
update out to other Ubuntu users.

If this package fixes the bug for you, please add a comment to this bug,
mentioning the version of the package you tested and change the tag from
verification-needed-xenial to verification-done-xenial. If it does not
fix the bug for you, please add a comment stating that, and change the
tag to verification-failed-xenial. In either case, details of your
testing will help us make a better decision.

Further information regarding the verification process can be found at
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/QATeam/PerformingSRUVerification . Thank you in
advance!

  *** hwe-16.04 refresh for 16.04.4 ***

A minor update, only some driver updates plus a newer Mesa.

Mesa needs llvm-toolchain-5.0 and libclc, libdrm, wayland-protocols
  updates.

  [Test case]

upgrade from/to stock & old hwe stack, test desktop usage

  [Regression potential]

  libdrm:
Slim to none, changes from 2.4.76 to 2.4.83
  - amdgpu: pci-id handling moved here, new pci-ids, bugfixes, tests
  - intel: new pci-ids
  - drm: leak fixes, manpage updates
  - exynos, etnaviv, freedreno, android: fixes, new stuff

  wayland-protocols:
None, just adds a few protocol definitions (xml files)

  llvm-toolchain-5.0:
  None, a new package

  libclc:
I'd say none, very little has changed, added support for llvm-5 is the main
reason for this slightly newer snapshot

  xorg-server:
Slim, it's an upstream bugfix release, changes from 1.19.3 to 1.19.5 include:
  - security fixes
  - backported bugfixes to glamor, modesetting driver, xwayland etc

  mesa:
New major release plus a few bugfix updates after that. Regressions at this
point are less likely. Upstream is tested by Intel CI system for instance. And
we're already testing it via a ppa on OEM systems for 16.04.4. Tracking bug for
the bugfix release (xenial & artful) is bug 1727390

  [Other information]

build order: [libdrm, wayland-protocols, llvm-toolchain-5.0], [libclc,
  xorg-server], mesa

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1734212] Re: package openssh-server 1:7.5p1-10 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2017-11-24 Thread ChristianEhrhardt
Hi tenwit,
thanks for your report!
You did just right to clean up and complete the installation.

On the error that occurred, what I can find related in your log is:
frontend: Fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server :0.

I found various such issues across the past - not frequent but every now and
then:
- bug 951404
- bug 821630

None came to a perfect conclusion, but it matches the error in your log as well
as the symptom "the graphical login having crashed".
That took down everything else with it, so the upgrade which you completed
later on.

You might read through those bugs, there are some hints on lightdm.conf
being responsible, but since you are "out of the bug" already that might
not matter to you anymore.

On the actual issue I don't see openssh related in any way - instead I'll
re-file this against
Given that this seems to be something like an X server dying checking and
attaching those logs might help the Team around lightdm and such as well.

Title:
Nautilus is very slow when opening folders with many files

Status in Nautilus:
  Invalid
Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Opening folders with many files takes a long time with Nautilus, to the point
it becomes unusable for folders with more than 5K files.
I've measured the time it takes for folders with different amount of files to
open with Nautilus and Gnome Commander. It is ~6 times faster with GC on
average. In folders with ~20K files, it takes 30s with nautilus versus 6! with
GC.

  With Nautilus
  ~3500 files tales 6 seconds
  ~7000 files takes 18 seconds
  ~15000 files takes 22 seconds
  ~2 files takes 30 seconds

  With Gnome Commander
  ~3500 files tales <1 second
  ~7000 files takes 1.5 seconds
  ~15000 files takes 3 seconds
  ~2 files takes 6 seconds

These are mostly small dicom files (MRI images). I am using a 8 core 3.4Ghz
and 16Gigs of RAM with Ubuntu 11.04 64-bits.
Also, of course, things like selecting all files and copying them around is
absurdly slow and makes nautilus unusable... but that would be another bug
report (?).
