Title:
session freezes/hangs after undetermined amount of time

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Currently using the default wayland session on 17.10: the computer
eventually hangs/freezes after an undetermined amount of time, whether
it'S still powered on and unused or when put on standby. Resuming the
session is impossible as the device is frozen and needs to bee reset
  with power button.

Critical bug as the issues has provoked major data loss and work in
  progress loss.

Possibly a functional regression due to the use of wayland or the
newer kernel provided with this release.

Title:
changing display mode after login terminates session

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
When I login, I type the password on the laptop screen. (Maybe it's
important.) After a while, while I'm waiting to get logged in, Ubuntu
changes the display mode. Both monitor goes black, laptop screen
becomes the secondary and my external monitor becomes the primary
display. Because of Ubuntu is unable to remember to the previously set
display mode, I usually change it a bit after I have logged in.
However, if I (would like to) do this too quickly, say... less than
4-5 seconds after I can see my desktop, my session gets terminated and
I'm returned to the login screen. You can repeat it indefinitely, it
  always worked for me.

I thought it's because of one of my extensions but I could reproduce it after
I have disabled them.
I haven't found any useful log entries.

  UPDATE 1:
While I was writing this, I thought it has something to do with theme loading
or something like this, so I continued to test with startup applications.
I just rarely managed to reproduce this bug when I didn't execute the
following script (as a file) at login:
  ```
  #!/bin/bash
  sleep 1s; firefox &
  sleep 1s; thunderbird &
  ```

I also noticed that after I have some faulty logins and then I login
without changing display mode, I >sometimes< have no desktop, no
startup applications and when I click power off/logout buttons nothing
happens, but that's sure I will being logged out randomly in the near
future - even if I don't touch my computer (I'm talking about
  minutes).

Plus, I can see the desktop and the top bar (so it's the primary
screen) with two wide black bars on the two sides of my laptop monitor
for a moment before I get logged out. (However, I don't see any
resolution changes so I guess it's not 640x480, or 800x600, etc.)

Title:
gnome-shell crashes when monitor sleeps or is turned off

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Expired

Bug description:
Gnome shell crashes reliably and only after a period of inactivity
(15+ minutes). I have not seen it crash while using the desktop - even
for hours at a time. I suspect it has something to do with locking the
screen or turning off the monitor. However even after attempting to
disable both lockscreen and blank screen it still happens.

  After a crash dmesg shows [ 3726.608957] gnome-shell[2666]: segfault
  at 38 ip 7fc6a7330c30 sp 7fff0d12fe78 error 4 in
  libmutter-1.so.0.0.0[7fc6a72de000+141000]

When the crash happens it goes back to the login screen. Logging in
  works fine.

It happens pretty reliably but will sometimes successfully lock and
blank the screen. I would say it happens 90% of the time I leave the
  computer alone for awhile.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1741588] [NEW] Categories in Ubuntu Software don't work

2018-01-05 Thread dmiller309
Public bug reported:

I'm a developer on the Polarr team for Linux, and users should be able
to find the Polarr app under the Photography category of the Ubuntu
Software store.

I attached a screenshot of the Photography category in the Ubuntu 16.04
Software store. The other categories are similarly non-functional.

As you can see, there are only ellipses where there should be icons and
descriptive text for each of the photography applications. Clicking on
the items doesn't do anything.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1739800] Re: Please remove gnome-python from Ubuntu

2018-01-05 Thread Jeremy Bicha
** No longer affects: rapid-photo-downloader (Ubuntu)

** Description changed:

gnome-python and pyorbit have been removed from Debian Testing because
it is an old GNOME2 library that hasn't been maintained in years. It
will take some time for those packages to be removed from Debian
Unstable, but I don't think we should ship gnome-python in Ubuntu 18.04
  LTS.

I am filing this bug now in particular to provide early notice for the
Ubuntu-specific packages firmware-tools and gnome-activity-journal. Both of
those projects were abandoned upstream years ago.

This bug depends on LP: #1739797 (removal of gnome-python-desktop).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1655348] Re: gpu-manager Error: can't open /lib/modules/

2018-01-05 Thread Ayoub Boudhar
I have a similar bug with the same premise, freezes using Google Chrome.
They tend to be very random, I only have them during playback.

Google Chrome: 63.0.3239.132 (64bits) (Although numerous versions before had
the same problem)
Ubuntu 17.10 (4.13.0-21-generic)
Running on a Pentium N3530, no discrete GPU.

The logs are almost identical.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1222183] Re: package emacsen-common 2.0.3 failed to install/upgrade: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 1

2018-01-05 Thread Vasiliy
I fix this by next commands:
wget
http://archive.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/universe/x/xemacs21/xemacs21-mule_21.4.22-4ubuntu3_i386.deb
dpkg -i --force-all ./xemacs21-mule_21.4.22-4ubuntu3_i386.deb
apt-get -f install
apt remove xemacs21-mule

Hmmm... emacsen-common require xemacs, xemacs21 require emacsen-common,
I don't need this stuff at all )) Just finish upgrade.

As a workaround the following executed on startup seems to work

xrandr --output VGA-0 --off

But it assumes the display will always be detected as VGA=0 and far from
ideal

Bug description:
  SRU Request

Systems with Optimus (Intel+NVIDIA GPUs) can have ghost VGA devices
hardcoded in the BIOS. This leads the system into thinking that there
is actually one more active output than there really is.

  [Impact]
   * The ghost VGA output confuses lightdm and the gnome-settings-daemon making
the system unusable.

  [Test Case]
   * Install the nvidia binary driver, reboot, and check the output of the
"xrandr -q" command
  - Expected: only the outputs that are actually connected will be marked
as active.
  - Bad behavior: a non-existent VGA device will show up in the output.

  [Regression Potential]
   * Low, as it only disables CRT outputs in the nvidia driver.

  [Other Info]
   * N/A

  --

There is a non existent display detected in both intel driver only and nvidia
331 driver installation.
The non existent display is "Unknown Display" shown in gnome-control-center
--> display and "CRT-0" in nvidia-settings, and "VGA-0" in xrandr -q output.
It will cause gdm failed to start. gnome-shell has some crazy layouts.
lightdm will only occupy 2/3 of monitor in top left corner.
I tested this in intel driver only environment. and nvidia-331 installation
environment.
My laptop is Asus U36JC. My monitor correct resolution is 1366x768.

The following is the output of "xrandr -q" in gnome-shell with

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1577197] Re: Pulseaudio bluez5-util.c: TryAcquire() failed - Operation Not Authorized

2018-01-05 Thread Zeppe
Im still experiencing this problem on Ubuntu 17.10 (very infrequently).
I'm getting:

[pulseaudio] bluez5-util.c: Transport TryAcquire() failed for transport
/org/bluez/hci0/dev_00_0C_8A_86_6A_94/fd0 (Operation Not Authorized)

often even in between 2 videos on youtube. This will freeze any video
playing btw. I can resolve with `pulseaudio -k` and repairing the
bluetooth device.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1721428] Re: Artful (17.10) Session logout after screen turned off

2018-01-05 Thread Andrzej Wojtaszewski
That worked but I had to ask for access to bug tracking since I'm new to
this.

Just hope there's no confirmation link etc. email from Canonical since I
lost access to mail account I used to create U1 acount way back then.

   * N/A

  --

There is a non existent display detected in both intel driver only and nvidia
331 driver installation.
The non existent display is "Unknown Display" shown in gnome-control-center
--> display and "CRT-0" in nvidia-settings, and "VGA-0" in xrandr -q output.

Gnome-shell crash and restart after the login and the screen flicker 1

  laptop.

If I go in display settings I notice a second monitor Synaptics Inc

flickering I don't have any other problem and that monitor is not
  present there.

  xrandr | grep -i ' connected'

axis) 309mm x 174mm
  DP-1-3 connected (normal left inverted right x axis y axis) <-- I don't have
anything connected to this port

With Fedora 26 I don't have this problem but I'm not yet able to find what
package is the culprit.
I believe this problem is related to Displayport 1.2, I don't have any dock
nor I need to connect more than 1 monitor and would be satisfied just having
one interface.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1729728] Re: window picker is broken in 3.26

2018-01-05 Thread Dmitry Shachnev
** Description changed:

- WindowPicker seems to be broken in 3.26.
+ [Impact]
+ One of the applets shipped in gnome-applets package is broken. It crashes on
startup because of missing GSettings schema file.

- It just crashes upon applet addition on fresh 17.10.
+ [Test Case]
+ * Log into GNOME Flashback session.
+ * Try to add the “Window picker” applet to the panel.
+
+ Expected result: panel does not crash, applet is added.
+
+ [Proposed Fix]
+ The proposed fix just makes the gsettings schema installed:
+
+ https://git.gnome.org/browse/gnome-applets/commit/?id=6aedbc3a6af54190
+
+ [Regression Potential]
+ None, as the fix just adds a missing file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1674057] Re: [needs packaging] upgrade libzip to version 1.20

2018-01-05 Thread Miha Vrhovnik
The version shipping with ubuntu is prehistoric. It would be really nice
if the library is updated in upcoming 18.04 otherwise the LTS and all
components relying on libzip e.g PHP will ship with this version for the
next 5 years.

On December 22, 2017 Mozilla released Thunderbird 52.5.2, fixing five
  security issues:

The most severe of these bugs only affects Windows. However, the
update also addresses two issues categorized as “high”, one
“moderate”, and another one “low” risk, which seem to affect all
platforms including Linux. Almost two weeks later, there is still no

I also spend hours on this issue trying to get a Logitech H800 headset working
and finally gave up.
It would be at least nice to know what's the problem (pulseaudio ? bluez ?
Headset ?) and if it's on the roadmap to fix it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1735363] Re: inkscape: Port to Python 3

2018-01-05 Thread Alex Valavanis
@Hachmann - Thanks for the gitlab link to su_v's work. Do you know what
the status of the fork is? Is there a wiki page/bug report tracking the
migration?

It would be good to get this merged as soon as possible, as the fork is
6 months behind master.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1726224] Re: wacom invisible mouse pointer in wayland

2018-01-05 Thread Erwyn
Just to add some information on this on the cursor disappearance topic.
If I hit the "windows" button the one that open the application/windows
browsing of gnome shell and I move the stylus on the tablet the pointer
is there. Same thing if I Alt+Tab. But I soon as I leave one or the
other, cursor is not there and the only quickfix yet is unplugging and

Status in GNOME Shell:

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:

Status in xorg-server package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 17.10, I connected my Wacom Intuos tablet,
which has touch and pen functionality.

Controlling the mouse pointer through the touch functionality seems to
work fine, but using the stylus produced very strange behaviour,
  depending the program.

  - With Firefox there there are two pointers - one that is moving in
accordance with the stylus movements, and one stays put at the
position, when the stylus movement was detected.

  - With Darktable the mouse pointer becomes invisible, once it's moved
inside of the application window (it registers clicks though). Once
the pointer is moved outside of the application window, it appears
  again.

I'm running Ubuntu inside of a wayland session.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1726224] Re: wacom invisible mouse pointer in wayland

2018-01-05 Thread Erwyn
Hello, Here to confirm cursor disappearance and system freeze. I have a
Wacom Intuos Comic Small. Also buttons are not properly detected I have
some mismatching in there (between what is shown in the settings and the
one actually pressed on the tablet). Funny thing is, mismatched is not
the same on Wayland and Xorg

Also, on Xorg the touch detection (right click/scrolling) is really
awful while it works pretty well on Wayland...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1616332] Re: gnome-software using hundreds of MB of memory when not in use

2018-01-05 Thread Bernat Guillen
I'm also affected by this bug. Sometimes it starts consuming memory (I
have 8GB, usually 6GB free) and devours swap as well. Only solution then
is to do a hard restart, which can be problematic if I have a simulation
running.

We'll try to get it into Ubuntu ASAP.

Title:
Mouse events pass through pure Wayland windows (that use wl_shell)

Status in Mutter:
  Confirmed
Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  In Progress

Bug description:
* When I run 'mpv', the video player, and I click on the main window with
my mouse, the click goes through and select whatever window was behind.
* The same thing happens if I build a SDL tutorial and start it with
SDL_VIDEODRIVER=wayland.
* The same thing happens if I build this Wayland tutorial:
https://github.com/hdante/hello_wayland
* The same thing with Jan Newmarch's Wayland tutorial examples.

These different cases lead me to believe that the problem lies in
Gnome Wayland compositor and not in these programs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1741428] [NEW] Upstream version 52.5.2 fixing high-risk bugs not yet available in Ubuntu-repositories

2018-01-05 Thread Ansgar Bohmann
*** This bug is a security vulnerability ***

Public security bug reported:

On December 22, 2017 Mozilla released Thunderbird 52.5.2, fixing five
security issues:

https://www.mozilla.org/en-US/security/advisories/mfsa2017-30/

The most severe of these bugs only affects Windows. However, the update
also addresses two issues categorized as “high”, one “moderate”, and
another one “low” risk, which seem to affect all platforms including
Linux. Almost two weeks later, there is still no sign of this update
arriving in the Ubuntu repositories.

** Affects: thunderbird (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Information type changed from Private Security to Public Security

@Daniel no, the whole system freezes, even if I ssh before the UI starts
(which requires exact timing), then the machine freezes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1638983] Re: Boot splash with luks password prompt broken after nvidia upgrade to 367

2018-01-05 Thread Daniel A.
Ubuntu 17.10 and nvidia-387, still a problem. Actually, it got even
worse.

On a freshly installed system, fully updated via apt dist-upgrade:

When I edit the boot options and remove "quiet splash", the screen just
goes black.

The only way to boot the system, is to go into rescue mode and continue
normal boot.

Title:
Boot splash with luks password prompt broken after nvidia upgrade to
  367

Status in nvidia-graphics-drivers-367 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Just got the nvidia driver update from 361 to 367. Upon reboot, the
boot splash (plymouth?) with the password prompt for the encrypted
  root is missing.

The screen flashes dark purple and the switches to black with a
blinking cursor echoing anything typed. Ctrl-alt-del reboots. Booting
with kernel options "quiet splash" removed results in a text-mode boot
process where the password prompt is present, proceeding normally.

Wasn't sure if this was plymouth or nvidia issue, I'm guessing nvidia
because that's what upgraded and broke functionality.

  Tried redoing update-grub and update-initramfs, didn't help. Found I
  had both nvidia-361 and nvidia-367 installed (why didn't -361
uninstall?), but manually removing -361 (and redoing initramfs just in
  case) didn't change anything.
