[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937919] Re: Fails to start pulseaudio (No card found by this name or index.)

2021-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Assuming the config file is correct, the next step would be to report
the problem to the developers at:

  https://gitlab.freedesktop.org/pulseaudio/pulseaudio/-/issues

and then tell us the new issue ID.

Yes PulseAudio should be able able to handle it but it also looks like
the cause of this bug. Please try temporarily moving that file to a
different directory and logging in again.

that is in my living room.

Thank you.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1938096] [NEW] touchpad lagging after resume from suspend

2021-07-26 Thread Alexander Karlstad
Public bug reported:

Hardware: Thinkpad X1 Carbon, 9th generation
Touchpad: SYNA8009:00 06CB:CE57

Right after a clean reboot, the touchpad works fine. No issues
whatsoever. But after resuming from even its first suspend after a clean
boot, the touchpad feels less responsive, choppy or even laggy. Very
strange. I have tried removing and re-inserting some HID kernel modules,
"psmouse", and setting i915.psr_enabled=0 in kernelstubs. Haven't found
anything that fixes it yet. The trackpoint works flawlessly all the
time, so that is the current backup when I don't have an external mouse
connected.

My installed OS is Pop!_Os 21.04, but I have tested and confirmed this
on a live USB with Ubuntu 21.04 as well and the issue do present itself.

I have also tried upgrading to the latest 5.13.5 and 5.14.0rc2 kernels
from the mainline PPA, and even tried bumping the libinput10 to 1.18.0
from the impish repos today to no avail I'm afraid.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1938077] [NEW] drag'n'drop file to terminal adds newline before closing quote

2021-07-26 Thread rduke15
Public bug reported:

When I drag and drop a file from Krusader to gnome-terminal, it quotes
the filename with single quotes but adds a newline before the closing
quote.

I then have to do Ctrl-C to correct the quoting before I can go on with
my command.

In case it's not clear, here is how it looks in Terminal:

$ file '/tmp/20180102_161315.jpg
> '

This however doesn't happen when drag'n'dropping from the Files
application. And it doesn't happen either when dropping the file from
Krusader into Konsole.

Ubuntu 20.04.2, gnome-terminal 3.36.2-1ubuntu1~20.04, Krusader 2.7.2,
KDE Frameworks 5.68.0, Qt 5.12.8

** Affects: gnome-terminal (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937922] Re: gtk4 not built for i386

2021-07-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Steve: I suppose this is now a request to add gtk4 to the whitelist, so
I subscribed ubuntu-archive.

I can't tell if any of the current i386 packages will use gtk4. But ibus
needs gtk4 when building to be able to enable gtk4 support, and it would
be convenient to not need to special case i386 and with that create a
permanent Ubuntu/Debian delta. So at least for now it would be great if
gtk4 could be added to the list explicitly.

Up to now ibus has been built also on i386, but gtk4 has not been
built on that arch, so the i386 build fails due to missing build
  dependencies.

Is it time to stop building ibus on i386? Or can we build gtk4 on i386
(it was successfully built on Debian's i386)?

At least some step needs to be taken.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937922] Re: gtk4 not built for i386

2021-07-26 Thread Steve Langasek
"regression-update" is a tag for SRUs, not appropriate here.

Otherwise, nothing in this bug report has flagged it to the attention of
the ubuntu-archive team, who are the only people that can add packages
to the i386 whitelist. The general process we've been using is to ask
folks on #ubuntu-release, but if you're going to file a bug about the
i386 whitelist, please subscribe ubuntu-archive.

Do we need gtk4 explicitly added to the whitelist, or will something
else that's currently built on i386 in the archive be using gtk4 in the
impish release? (For reference, gtk+3.0 is not manually whitelisted for
i386.)

commit changed the JD definition.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1708933] Re: Can't add a Microsoft account to GNOME Online Accounts

2021-07-26 Thread Reza
After logging in, I see the "windows Network" added under Files > Other
Locations. However, it has no access to the account. Gives the following error
when clicking on it:
"Unable to access location,
Failed to retrieve share list from server: No such file or directory"

Google account is added successfully though!

Any solution?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1929854] Re: Vital and critical configuration files get overridden by system updates without warning

2021-07-26 Thread Julian Andres Klode
Please don't modify that in /etc/grub.d, set GRUB_RECORDFAIL_TIMEOUT=5
in the /etc/default/grub file (or in an /etc/default/grub.d snippet).
/etc/grub.d file changes are last resort, that file changes and
incorporating those changes with your own ones will be annoying.

Title:
Vital and critical configuration files get overridden by system
  updates without warning

Status in grub2 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in libx11 package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in openssh package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  • In my /usr/share/X11/locale/en_US.UTF-8/Compose I have about 10'000 lines
of special compose keys defined.
  • In my /boot/grub/grub.cfg I have a very complicated special setup for my
various boot configurations, and a 5-sec timout for my EFI-config.
  • My /etc/ssh/sshd_config contains a well-balanced configuration

All these files are regularly overridden WITHOUT EVEN A SINGLE WARNING
or ASKING BACK by ubuntu system setups (discover).

I set all of them to read-only by root and no-access for group and
other users, but they still get overridden by every other system
update. I even have a shutdown process in place which should actually
make sure that changes to these files are reverted by writing a backup
copy over any newly installed override — unfortunately, everything I
did to run either a custom shutdown process or a startup process with
systemd turned out to not work and be a nightmare to make work.

How somebody could be as bold as to override vital configuration files
like this without even asking for consent is one of the strange
miracles in this world which I'll probably never understand. However,
if "ubuntu" is really what it translates to, it should take a little
bit more care about pre-existing configurations on systems on which it
is set up and running well — until one system update suddenly
jeopardizes the functioning of the entire system. I'm pretty sure
these are not the only configuration files which are carelessly just
overridden. They're just the ones every other update breaks my system
and inflinges on my the costs of hours of research until I find out
that — of course — it was an overridden critical system configuration
again. The really mean thing is that you don't notice anything when
you run the update … only next time you start your system and of
course are not aware anymore that you did a system update, the new
(absolutely wrong and/or insufficent) settings are in place and shoot
  you in the leg.

Take an example from gentoo's etc-update feature which lets you merge
new configuration files with pre-existing ones using a diff3-update.
I went away from gentoo for other reasons, but I always praised that
  feature.

Please make sure immediately that critical configuration files do not
get overridden if they are non-writable by root, and then gradually
introduce a system that merges changes to configuration files with the
current situation on the target system. Or at least present the
configs that would be changed in a particular directory, so that
anybody who is interested in preserving local settings could merge
  them in a suitable way.

  Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1929854] Re: Vital and critical configuration files get overridden by system updates without warning

2021-07-26 Thread Dominik Wezel
As to sshd_config:

I will, when the case arises again.

Unfortunately, I don't use sshd in my boxes on a regular basis and so
often discover only changes that possibly happened a long time ago. I
remember a nasty change from "PasswordAuthentication no" to
"#PasswordAuthentication yes", but honestly it was quite some time ago.

  Thanks

I think wasn't built as per missing pango build on i386, that's now
fixed so shoudl just trigger a rebuild of gtk4 itself.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937919] Re: Fails to start pulseaudio (No card found by this name or index.)

2021-07-26 Thread Jarno Suni
I created the custom default.pa. It adds only two commands when compared to
default /etc/pulse/default.pa:
load-module module-native-protocol-tcp auth-ip-acl=192.168.100.51
set-card-profile alsa_card.pci-_00_1b.0 input:analog-stereo

The first one I need for network access of pulseaudio from a separate
server
(https://www.freedesktop.org/wiki/Software/PulseAudio/Documentation/User/Network/#authorization)
and the second one sets up the profile for the integrated
alsa_card.pci-_00_1b.0 to use it only for input. I use an USB device
for output. Pulseaudio should be able to handle these.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1918855] Re: Xorg xserver got signal 6 to abort

2021-07-26 Thread Andy Chi
I enable -proposed and do a dist-upgrade, made sure 21.0.3-0ubuntu0.2 is
installed, then reboot and run stress-ng:

$ stress-ng --stack 0 --timeout 300
stress-ng: info: [1936] dispatching hogs: 8 stack
stress-ng: info: [1936] successful run completed in 300.88s (5 mins, 0.88 secs)

The desktop session didn't crash so it's still alive.

When the system is under memory pressure, the entire desktop session may
crash.

  [Fix]
Commit f9d8d9acbb6a620684fb4dac4affe25816587d92 ("iris: Avoid abort() if
kernel can't allocate memory")

  [Test]
Run memory stress and the session crashed in less than 5 minutes.
With the fix applied, run memory stress for 24 hours and the desktop session
is still alive.

  [Where problems could occur]
Doing a reset might make the system even more sluggish when under memory
pressure.

  == Original bug report ==
I run checkbox job com.canonical.certification::memory/memory_stress_ng on
focal, and the xserver stops unexpectedly with the following stacktrace:

Bug description:
In Ubuntu 21.10 Impish Indri, I have done today's updates, including
GNOME 40, and when I rebooted, I saw the desktop icons in the
Activities overview that has the grey gears icon and the gibberish
name. However, when I clicked on it, I'm taken to the desktop. When I
open the Activities overview again, that "application" didn't show up.

I suspect that this "application" came from a GNOME extension that
  handles desktop icons, called gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons-ng.
Because I thought that it loaded AFTER the Activities overview opened
at log in. This repeats every time I reboot or just log off and log
  back in.

  Steps to reproduce:
1. Update the Impish system to the latest version
2. Reboot
3. Log in

  Expected results:
The "application" that came from the desktop icon shell extension doesn't
appear in the Activities overview

  Actual results:
This "application" shows up in the overview with the grey gears icon and
the gibberish name every time a user signs in to the new GNOME 40 desktop

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937126] Re: bug found

2021-07-26 Thread Fernando Fernandes Bonadio

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1917010] Re: Hard to detect double-clicks on the HiDPI touchscreen system

2021-07-26 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Kai-Heng Feng: Yes, but I meant to ask if the *additional* dependencies
(gir1.2-clutter-gst-3.0 and gir1.2-gtkclutter-1.0) are required, i.e. is
there a need to change the gnome-shell-extension-desktop-icons uploads
as well?

Roughly double tap the desktop icon and nothing happens.
After applying the fix, double tap can 100% open the app or directory.
[racb] Since single click code is also being adjusted, please also test that
single clicking behaviour has not changed.
[racb] Since clicking with modifiers (holding Shift and/or Ctrl) is also
being adjusted, please also test that modifier clicking behaviour has not
changed.

  [Where problems could occur]
If the new code throws any exception, clicking can also be affected.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1922839] Re: Opening new tab in gnome-terminal launched from nautilus loses most environment variables

2021-07-26 Thread Stepan Roucka
A quick workaround is to install the gnome-terminal version >= 3.38.2.
E.g. 3.38.3 from debian repos here:
https://packages.debian.org/bullseye/gnome-terminal

Title:
Opening new tab in gnome-terminal launched from nautilus loses most
  environment variables

Status in GNOME Terminal:
  Unknown
Status in gnome-terminal package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gnome-terminal source package in Hirsute:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]

If you launch gnome-terminal by right clicking a directory in
Nautilus, selecting "Open in Terminal", you get a fully functional
  terminal window.

If you then press the new tab button, or ctrl-shift-t to open a new
terminal tab, you will find that most environment variables have
become unset, and you see the text:

To run a command as administrator (user "root"), use "sudo ".
  See "man sudo_root" for details.

  Comparing printenv between:

  Normal terminal: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/2hcCY9hbHQ/
  Broken new terminal tab: https://paste.ubuntu.com/p/zYsjRHVJH7/

Most commands won't run in the new terminal tab, due to $HOME and
  $USER not being set.

Note, if you launch gnome-terminal from gnome-shell or the dock, and
create a new tab, everything works perfectly. Is something wrong with
the Nautilus option for "Open in Terminal"?

  [Testcase]

  1. Launch Nautilus to home directory
  2. Right click > "Open in Terminal"
  3. Run "printenv" to see full list of env variables
  4. Click new tab button, or ctrl-shift-t
  5. Run "printenv" see the lack of env variables

I have a test package available in the below ppa:

  https://launchpad.net/~mruffell/+archive/ubuntu/lp1922839-test

The build in the ppa has 16bd9f6a4181d37af2769e7ca5a1f9a1211cfaac
  reverted.

If you install this package, environment variables will be set
  correctly.

  [Where problems could occur]

I think there is some risk with re-instating a commit which has been
reverted, and users could run into similar issues as found in the
  upstream bug.

We do have some supporting evidence that the commit isn't too harmful,
since it is applied to Groovy currently, things work as intended
there, and users haven't complained about the issues in the upstream
  bug applying to Groovy.

If a regression were to occur, then launching a new gnome-terminal or
opening a new tab could land the user with a terminal with little to
no environment variables set. A workaround will be to launch gnome-
  terminal from gnome-shell overview.

  [Other info]

Focal and Groovy have the following commit applied:

  commit fd5ac772154426e2da5afd633b336414bca33be9
  Author: Christian Persch
  Date: Mon Mar 23 09:57:56 2020 +0100
Subject: screen: Use clean env when creating new tab
  Link:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-terminal/-/commit/fd5ac772154426e2da5afd633b336414bca33be9

This was then reverted in 3.38.1 due to the upstream bug:

  https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-terminal/-/issues/253

  The reverted commit is:

  commit 16bd9f6a4181d37af2769e7ca5a1f9a1211cfaac
  Author: Christian Persch
  Date: Thu Sep 17 17:10:47 2020 +0200
Subject: Revert "screen: Use clean env when creating new tab"
  Link:
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-terminal/-/commit/16bd9f6a4181d37af2769e7ca5a1f9a1211cfaac

This revert seems to have broken Hirsute. If we revert the revert,
that is, apply the commit again, things work as intended.

To fix this, we need to re-apply
  fd5ac772154426e2da5afd633b336414bca33be9.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1936966] Re: Libreoffice 7.1 from PPA uses wrong desktop/panel/window icons for Template wizards

2021-07-26 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
The template dialog has an unfortunate setting of
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "soffice", "Soffice"
compared to the main windows of e.g. LibreOffice Impress
WM_CLASS(STRING) = "libreoffice", "libreoffice-impress"

Although I thought bamf is able to match windows based on their (parent-) pid
by using e.g.
_NET_WM_PID(CARDINAL)
which do match in this case.

** Also affects: bamf (Ubuntu)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937958] Re: gnome-shell gdb instructions cause immediate "Oh no" crash

2021-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
That wiki is not owned by Ubuntu so we can't fix the instructions it
gives. As for any and all crashes in Ubuntu, please follow these
instructions:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. If step 2 also failed then apply the workaround from bug 994921,
reboot, reproduce the crash, and retry step 1.

Please take care to avoid attaching .crash files to bugs as we are
unable to process them as file attachments. It would also be a security
risk for yourself.

Title:
gnome-shell gdb instructions cause immediate "Oh no" crash

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I wanted to report a gnome-shell bug with a backtrace, so tried to use
  the instructions in

     https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging

which say to do the following in an ssh login or separate VT:

    gnome_session=$(pgrep -u $USER gnome-session)
    eval export $(sed 's/\o000/\n/g;' < /proc/$gnome_session/environ | grep
DISPLAY)
    eval export $(sed 's/\o000/\n/g;' < /proc/$gnome_session/environ | grep
XAUTHORITY)
    eval export $(sed 's/\o000/\n/g;' < /proc/$gnome_session/environ | grep
DBUS_SESSION_BUS_ADDRESS)
    gdb
    ...etc...

However three problems came up, two minor (wrong instructions), the
  other major:

  (1) There is more than one gnome-session process, and so the shell
variable $gnome_session gets set to a list of several PIDs, which in
turn causes syntax errors when using the expression
  "/proc/$gnome_session/environ".

In Ubuntu 21.04 I have three gnome-session processes immediately after
rebooting and logging in (I have auto-login enabled, so the login
happens by itself, in case that matters):

  $ ps -F $(pgrep -u $USER gnome-session|perl -p -e 's/(\d+)/-p $1/')
UID PIDPPID CSZ RSS PSR STIME TTY TIME CMD
  jima97439725 0 55216 16084 2 13:41 tty3 00:00:00
/usr/libexec/gnome-session-binary --systemd --session=ubuntu
  jima98288066 0 24031 6148 8 13:41 ?00:00:00
/usr/libexec/gnome-session-ctl --monitor
  jima98388066 0 129272 18176 7 13:41 ?00:00:00
/usr/libexec/gnome-session-binary --systemd-service --session=ubuntu

  (2) The instructions specify this gdb command:

    call gjs_dumpstack ()

However that results in an error and the call is not made:
'gjs_dumpstack' has unknown return type; cast the call to its declared
  return type

  (3) Most importantly, a crash: Immediately upon starting the new
gnome-shell process (with option --replace) a white screen appears
with "Oh No... something went wrong..." forcing me log out.

The crash happens whether using an independent VT or an ssh login.

Afterwards I typed Control-C to get control in gdb, and produced the
attached backtraces but they don't seem useful (see attached
  typescript file).

/var/syslog might be useful. I will attach the portion beginning just
  before starting the new gnome-shell

The attached typescript file shows what I did to circumvent the buggy
  instructions at https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/GnomeShell/Debugging

P.S. The original crash I wanted to report was that opening any .jpg
in gimp and selecting part of the image and then doing Select->Invert
instantly freezes the system. The only recovery is to use a separate
VT to kill the gimp process, after which gnome-shell restarts. A
system error dialog appears saying gnome-session [correction: gnome-
shell] got a segfault somewhere; thus the desire to get a backtrace.
But this bug report is _not_ about that bug, but is about how using
the debug instructions in the wiki are incorrect and when fixed seem
to cause a crash on their own.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1937919] Re: Fails to start pulseaudio (No card found by this name or index.)

2021-07-26 Thread Daniel van Vugt
It sounds like the error is coming from:

  /home/jarnos/.config/pulse/default.pa

so I would recommend just deleting that custom config file if you can't
figure out where the error is.

If the file reappears and you didn't manually create it then we would
need to find out which app is creating the file.

Title:
[HP Probook 450 G6] Laptop Monitor Turns off During Startup, but older
  kernel versions work

Status in linux package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  While starting the my laptop

(Computer Model: HP Probook 450 G6
  ProdID 5YH15UT#ABA
  Memory: 15.5 GB
  Processor: Intel Core i7-8565U CPU @ 1.80GHz x 8
Graphics: NV118 / Mesa Intel UHD Graphics 620 (WHL GT2)
  Disk Capacity: 256.1 GB)

  which runs

  (OS Name: Ubuntu 20.04.2 LTS
  OS Type: 64-bit
  GNOME Version: 3.36.8
  Windowing System: X11)

the monitor turns off as soon as Ubuntu loads. The OS loads as normal
and my external monitor still works, but my laptop monitor does not. I
was able to fix the problem by pressing ESC as soon as the HP logo
appears during start-up, then selecting "Advanced Ubuntu Options",
then choosing an older version of Ubuntu (currently that's
...5.4.0-48..., while I believe the latest version is ...5.8.0-66...).

It seems clear that this problem is caused by a bug that was
introduced in one of the more recent updates (...5.8.0-59..., maybe?).
I am not at all sure that the problem is in xorg; the package
identification webpage just suggested that, if the monitor is blank
when I would expect to see the Ubuntu logo during startup, then I
should say that the relevant package is xorg.

I am more than happy to run additional diagnostics that you would
recommend if that would help you diagnose and fix the problem.

  Thank you.
