[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1944071] Re: resolution problem

2021-09-19 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report. It appears that Xorg is using a fallback (low
resolution) graphics driver because your kernel is not providing the
correct device node:

[70.422] (EE) [drm] Failed to open DRM device for pci::01:00.0: -19
[70.422] (EE) open /dev/dri/card0: No such file or directory

Also your kernel appears to be quite out of date so please try updating
it:

  sudo apt update
  sudo apt full-upgrade

and reboot.

Title:
[AMD Ellesmere] Crackling sound on Pulseaudio

Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
While playing back any sounds, a certain crackling sound (static) will
play with a fixed delay of the sound being played. The amount and
volume of the static will depend on the sound/music that is being
played, and this only starts occurring after a somewhat long time (30
minutes or more). What is interesting to see is that while playing
back music from Spotify (Snap) the static will only start after a
second or so, but when playing YouTube videos on Firefox, it will be
immediate and output that static while the video is playing.

I've added two sound recordings, one while playing back a song from
Spotify and the other while playing a song from YouTube. This issue
goes away when restarting the PulseAudio service, but it comes back
after a random amount of time.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1927149] Re: Irrelevant translatable strings

2021-09-19 Thread Matthias Klumpp
I still think this is a dumb fix, especially since you loose the feature to
actually mark strings from being untranslatable by dropping the appstream
dependency.
A proper workaround would be to leave that in, possibly backport the ITS patch
for appstream to update the file, and then mark the release entries you don't
want to have translated with `translate="no"` in the XML.

Title:
  Irrelevant translatable strings

Status in AppStream:
  Unknown
Status in GNOME Software:
  Unknown
Status in snap-store-desktop:

Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
When building gnome-software on Ubuntu, dh_translations generates a
translation template (.pot file) to be imported to Rosetta. That
template includes 700+ log messages from
  data/appdata/org.gnome.Software.appdata.xml.in. The messages are not
shown to users, and it makes no sense to have those strings
translated. It's worth mentioning that the strings are excluded in
  upstream's translation template.

The issue was first reported at the ubuntu-translators mailing list:
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2021-May/007757.html

I stripped the redundant strings from the template and uploaded it to
hirsute manually as a temporary measure.

The reason why this happens seems to be that the appstream package is
included in Build-Depends. appstream installs the file
/usr/share/gettext/its/metainfo.its with rules which make all the log
entries be extracted. But the gettext package installs
  /usr/share/gettext-0.21/its/metainfo.its with more sensible rules
which do not make the log entries be extracted. If the former is not
present, xgettext falls back to the latter.

So a solution to this issue is to drop appstream from Build-Depends.
gnome-software seems to build fine without that package (tested in
  PPA).

  Irrelevant translatable strings

Bug description:
When building gnome-software on Ubuntu, dh_translations generates a
translation template (.pot file) to be imported to Rosetta. That
template includes 700+ log messages from
  data/appdata/org.gnome.Software.appdata.xml.in. The messages are not
shown to users, and it makes no sense to have those strings
translated. It's worth mentioning that the strings are excluded in
  upstream's translation template.

The issue was first reported at the ubuntu-translators mailing list:
  https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ubuntu-translators/2021-May/007757.html

I stripped the redundant strings from the template and uploaded it to
hirsute manually as a temporary measure.

The reason why this happens seems to be that the appstream package is
included in Build-Depends. appstream installs the file
/usr/share/gettext/its/metainfo.its with rules which make all the log
entries be extracted. But the gettext package installs
  /usr/share/gettext-0.21/its/metainfo.its with more sensible rules
which do not make the log entries be extracted. If the former is not
present, xgettext falls back to the latter.

So a solution to this issue is to drop appstream from Build-Depends.
gnome-software seems to build fine without that package (tested in
  PPA).

2021-09-19 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
This bug was fixed in the package gnome-software - 40.4-1

---
gnome-software (40.4-1) unstable; urgency=medium

  [ Gunnar Hjalmarsson ]
  * Drop appstream from Build-Depends
- This prevents that irrelevant translatable strings are extracted
when building for Ubuntu (LP: #1927149).

  [ Adrian Bunk ]
  * Add mipsel to the gnome-software-plugin-flatpak architecture list

  [ Laurent Bigonville ]
  * debian/watch: Update the URL to follow the new version scheme
  * New upstream release
- Adjust the build-dependencies
- Fix the installation paths of the plugins, they have moved to another
directory. Also remove deprecated rules and options
- Install the new libgnomesoftware private library in the main package
  * debian/rules: Enable the apt URL handler in the .desktop file

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1927149] Re: Irrelevant translatable strings

2021-09-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
The package move suggestion wasn't about this bug. If the file ought to
be in the -dev package and we think it's important enough, we can do the
move.

We once discussed this idea for policykit's .its file, which is included
in policykit-1 instead of the -dev package.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1927149] Re: Irrelevant translatable strings

2021-09-19 Thread Gunnar Hjalmarsson
@Jeremy: That would be quite some work. And please note that avoiding
the metainfo.its file shipped with some appstream{,-glib} binary should
be considered a temporary fix, i.e. the file will sooner or later
replace the older equivalent in the gettext package.

After I had filed the appstream issue, they made a change so you can opt
out from extracting strings:

https://github.com/ximion/appstream/commit/51ab4f32

So in the GNOME Software issue I proposed that we should opt out all
over, but the maintainer let me know that the strings will be shown in
Software as from GNOME 41, so he didn't let me 'hide' the latest
strings.

At the same time: Here is the attitude from the l10n.gnome.org folks:

https://gitlab.gnome.org/Infrastructure/damned-
lies/-/issues/149#note_532339

And here we sit downstream and see that GNOME disagrees with GNOME. :(

2021-09-19 Thread Jeremy Bicha
We have done big transitions before. If we wanted to move the file, I
think it could go like this:

Step 1: Have libappstream-glib-dev depend on appstream
Step 2: File bugs against all the rdepends to change their Build-Depends
Step 3: After all the rdepends are fixed, move the file and drop the dependency
we added in step 1

Bug description:
Using ubuntu 20.04 on displaylink docking with external monitor is
totally slow, unusable. The GUI responds very slow, if you click, the
command of the click goes on after about 3 seconds... if you type, all
the letters are with the same lag, so it is totally unusable.

Was using displaylink without any problem on 19.10 until yesterday, when I
upgraded to 20.04.
  It is terrific.

If i plug out the usb for the displaylink docking station, than the
speed is back, and the system is ok, if I connect it to the docking
station again, everything extremely slow again.

Please investigate this asap, as it is unusable on displaylink docking
  stations.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 755342] Re: Samsung Xcover 271 B2710 mass storage does not mount automatically

2021-09-19 Thread Oleg Moiseichuk
This bug still exists in Kubuntu 20.04. Samsung Xcover B2710 isn't connected
properly.
Long ago I fixed it on Ubuntu 12.04 by "DisableSwitching=1" and forgot about
it. Now found this bugreport once again and old fix still works.
If my help is needed in debugging of this issue, I'm ready.
P.S. Does this disabled switching affects other USB devices somehow or only
mobile phones?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1940417]

2021-09-19 Thread Stransky
Please test with latest nightly, how-to is here:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Firefox_problems?rd=Bug_info_Firefox#Testing_Mozilla_binaries

You should create a new profile so it won't break your working Firefox
setup.

Alternatively you can use mozregression tool:
https://fedoraproject.org/wiki/How_to_debug_Firefox_problems?rd=Bug_info_Firefox#Use_Mozregression_tool

as:

MOZ_ENABLE_WAYLAND=1 mozregression --good 91.0

and it will download and launch nightly for you but you need to check
which version is actually running (mozregression will download and
launch Firefox 91, Nightly and versions between these two).

Title:
On Wayland toolbar menus are sometimes invisible/flickering

Status in Mozilla Firefox:
  New
Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  User Agent: Mozilla/5.0 (X11; Ubuntu; Linux x86_64; rv:91.0)
  Gecko/20100101 Firefox/91.0

  Steps to reproduce:

Open Downloads panel, Library or Application menu form the Toolbar by
  clicking on the corresponding icons.

  Actual results:

From version 90 I noticed that Library or other items in the Toolbar
won't open when I click it. Instead it flickers a few times on mouse
movement - it looks like it opens but it's not visible, it becomes
visible a fraction of a second when I move the mouse otherwise it's
  completely transparent.

Which Toolbar icon this affects seems random. I tried to fix it by
resetting the Toolbar and disabling extensions which have icons in the
Toolbar. Then I noticed that Library was working normal again but
Downloads or Application Menu wouldn't open.

When this happened with the Application Menu I could barely see the
contents of the menu by moving the mouse which made the menu flicker.
The cursor was able to select menu items in the menu but it was
  completely transparent.

In the enclosed screenshot you can see I selected the Library menu
  item but it isn't opened.

  Expected results:

The menus in the Toolbar should open like they used to.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1944076] [NEW] [MS-7A39, Nvidia GPU 84 HDMI/DP, Digital Out, HDMI] Underruns, dropouts or crackling sound

2021-09-19 Thread Rajesh Chaudhary
Public bug reported:

I have MSI Optix Pag241CR and it has one audio out port. I use it to
connect my speaker.

Sometimes it has great sound. But most of the time, I can hear a
crackling(buzz) noise while playing the music. It also happens when I
connect an earphone.

It has no issue connecting through green out (PC).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1886653] Re: cups-pki-expired

2021-09-19 Thread Sami Pietila
I think the solution should be something that does not require editing
files under /etc.

Perhaps printing should prompt a question if the document should be
printed in case the printer certificate has expired.
