[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992128] [NEW] thundebird hangs on start

2022-10-06 Thread Götz Waschk
Public bug reported:

On startup, even with safe-mode, thunderbird hangs before you can click
anything, you get the pop-up "Thunderbird does not answer" with the options
exit and wait. I have two IMAP accounts and 10 calendars configured.
This is on Ubuntu 22.04.1 LTS with thunderbird 102.2.2+build1-0ubuntu0.22.04.1.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992101] Re: No sound devices listed in Settings

2022-10-06 Thread Mateusz Łącki
Clarification: "They also show up in alsamixer, where I can mute/unmute,
change volume..." but still just "dummy output" is in System settings
and no sound.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992101] Re: No sound devices listed in Settings on ASUS PRIME X470-PRO

2022-10-06 Thread Mateusz Łącki
Are there further things I can check? The list of audio devices is what
I have - exactly those 4 devices showed up in 22.04. They also show up
in alsamixer, where I can mute/unmute, change volume...

I usually used an USB sound card (the 1 [G1 ]: USB-Audio - Sound
BlasterX G1) listed in the above list with index 1. I am just saying
that this I guess should be sort of motherboard-independent in - it is
pluggable device, not an on-board audio chip.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992101] Re: pipewire no sound on ASUS PRIME X470-PRO

2022-10-06 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Seems like the system knows about several sound devices:

 0 [NVidia ]: HDA-Intel - HDA NVidia
HDA NVidia at 0xf508 irq 155
 1 [G1 ]: USB-Audio - Sound BlasterX G1
Creative Technology Ltd Sound BlasterX G1 at
usb-:0e:00.3-1, full speed
 2 [Generic]: HDA-Intel - HD-Audio Generic
  HD-Audio Generic at 0xf640 irq 157
 3 [Camera ]: USB-Audio - PC-LM1E Camera
Vimicro corp. PC-LM1E Camera at usb-:08:00.0-1.1,
high speed

I wonder if this bug is just in the Settings app (gnome-control-center)

I've pinned gnome-terminal to gnomes-shells (favorites? launch?) area.
When launching, it doesn't track that it's launched like normal
favorited apps, but instead creates an icon to the right of the

the Action in the .desktop file going wrong?

  LibreOffice Failure

Status in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I’ve made tree reports thinking that it was some extension of the
Firefox browser, such as the dark reader and Grammarly, in fact I
deactivated them and my computer worked better.

Last night I reinstalled them, but the fault reappeared. I uninstalled
Grammarly and reported it assuming that was the bug. Instead, I
installed another text corrector that is endorsed by the extension
community web browser and has worked very well.

A few minutes ago, while using the LibreOffice, Google Translate and
the new text corrector, the bug appeared again.

This time was by placing a small window with the browser name in the
upper left of my LibreOffice, something that is not the first time I
  saw.

Other times the fail has manifested more severely and as a flickering
video glitch not only with the Firefox browser and add-ons, but with
other features of the computer. But this time I think it's a
  LibreOffice word processor bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1990673]

2022-10-06 Thread Vmiklos-y
I agree that Writer's default vs text body choice is inconsistent; Word
just uses Normal for both initial para style and after heading.
Improving consistency in this area sounds useful. If this is just a UI
change for new documents, I expect no problems.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1989821] Re: Firefox hangs, unable to reload tabs for up to 2min after switching to session that was idle for several hours

2022-10-06 Thread Steve Chadsey
I installed firefox-104.0.2 from upstream, and set both users' desktop
environments to use that one instead of the Ubuntu bundled version. I
didn't know how firefox handles profiles with different versions of the
browser installed, so I (perhaps unnecessarily) cleaned out ~/.mozilla
for both accounts. After a few weeks of testing it out, with the same
desktop usage habits (switching between accounts and such), I did not
find any discernible improvement in the problematic behavior (nor did I
see a worsening of the behavior). I've since reverted my configuration
back to using the bundled browser.

I'm open to try other experiments. I'm thinking of trying an upstream
version that is old enough to predate this issue, which as I initially
reported might be around the 99 timeframe. Another idea is an OS
upgrade.

Title:
Firefox hangs, unable to reload tabs for up to 2min after switching to
session that was idle for several hours

Status in firefox package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I am not sure when exactly this started. I feel like it was around FF
  v99.

System is always on. 2 user accounts (mine, wife's). We keep the
desktop sessions logged-in, just switch between accounts whenever
needed. Firefox stays open since it's heavily used. When an active
session is unlocked or switched to after being unused for several
hours (not rigorously measured but I'd say more than 6-8 hours), we
observe the following behavior in Firefox:

  * Gmail tab will show a message at the top of the page along the lines of
"Not connected, retrying in 3:00" with the timer counting down
  * For the first 10-20s, clicking on another tab will have no effect - FF
doesn't switch to the tab
  * From 20s to between 1-2 minutes:
    - Switching tabs will work albeit slowly.
    - Reloading an existing tab does nothing except cause the side-to-side
loading indicator on the tab to cycle
    - I am able to open a new tab via ctrl-T
    - I can enter a URL into a new tab, but the site doesn't load. The loading
indicator cycles in the tab title.
    - I cannot open about:performance to troubleshoot

After some period of time, as short as 30-40s and as long as 2
minutes, FF becomes usable again. Sites can be loaded/reloaded, etc.

What I have tried, but has not resolved the issue:
  * Restart FF in troubleshooting mode
  * Upgrade to new releases as they are available in the package manager
  * Run in non-troubleshooting mode but with all extensions removed
  * Refresh the browser
  * Set browser.tabs.unloadOnLowMemory = false
  * rm -rf ~/.mozilla and start with a fresh profile

Workaround: killall -9 firefox, then relaunch firefox

Again, this seems to have started suddenly at some point possibly
around the v99 timeframe. Prior to that, I did not observe this
problem. Hardware, and to the best of my knowledge the usage habits of
the 2 users, have not changed in quite some time.

I've attached the output of a "vmstat 1" command that I launched when
I unlocked a session that was idle for approximately 40h, before
interacting with the existing firefox session. The firefox issue
manifested for about 1min 20s. Once firefox became usable, I stopped
  the vmstat command.

Bug description:
App grid scrolling stutters when Ubuntu Dock is on the left side of

Feels like a scrolling/relayout propagation bug, which might be best
  fixed in gnome-shell itself.

I'm noticing performance issues like this when I have an Nvidia GTX

lowest power mode (desktop has been idle).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1959747]

2022-10-06 Thread Frank Winklmeier
I am seeing the exactly same behavior as Adi on Ubuntu 22.04. I manually
upgraded to Thunderbird 102 via the mozilla ppa and I am seeing the same
high CPU usage on mouse hover and delayed animations, which made the UI
almost unusable for me. My first guess was also the WebRender as I had
to disable it for Thunderbird 91. However, I do use Firefox 105 without
problems. So maybe it is indeed a different issue.

Perhaps it's not actually realted to webrender, I just assumed that
because disabling it solved problems in the past. I use the drivers
built into the kernel and I am on a 5.18 kernel. There were no
differences in performance with software mode, so it could very well not
be related to webrender.

It seems that the high CPU usage and slow UI update is worse when the
message list is big and the window is big. If I make it that only 10
rows are visible, it seems to be faster. Here is a profile of the mouse
moving around a large message list. https://share.firefox.dev/3y3PfU2

I assume you already tried the newest graphics drivers.

Why would you want to *completely * disable WebRender? Do hardware AND
software WebRender crash for you? You can set gfx.webrender.software to
true to disable hardware WebRender and enable software WebRender
instead. Please try this instead of using an e-mail client with security
vulnerabities (since Thunderbird 91 won't receive any further security
update we have to assume that Thunderbird 91 is insecure now).

2022-10-06 Thread adibadi
Debian 11 just upgraded to Thunderbird 102, which has removed the
possibility of disabling webrender, rendering Thunderbird on my computer
basically unusable. I was forced to downgrade to version 91.

high CPU usage and around 100ms delay on hover animations when moving
mouse over emails and menu items.

System is Debian 11.5, Xfce, AMD Ryzen 4750u with integrated graphics in
a Thinkpad T14 AMD Gen 1.

jochemp...@gmail.com,

Looks like I had you grepping for the wrong thing. This is likely your
issue as well if you want to share your dmesg.

jochemp...@gmail.com & toyeisf...@gmail.com,
My suggestion for both of you is to follow up with Lenovo support as I
mentioned and see where that gets us. If enough of us take issue, they might be
inclined to fix it.

Failing that, if enough of us are affected, maybe we can start a
petition?

I still haven't been able to follow up on my ticket. Too busy with
work/life.

This is not a theme that I would normally use so I'm not too bothered

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1992100] [NEW] LibreOffice Failure

2022-10-06 Thread Alexander Zuniga U.
Public bug reported:

I’ve made tree reports thinking that it was some extension of the
Firefox browser, such as the dark reader and Grammarly, in fact I
deactivated them and my computer worked better.

Last night I reinstalled them, but the fault reappeared. I uninstalled
Grammarly and reported it assuming that was the bug. Instead, I
installed another text corrector that is endorsed by the extension
community web browser and has worked very well.

A few minutes ago, while using the LibreOffice, Google Translate and the
new text corrector, the bug appeared again.

This time was by placing a small window with the browser name in the
upper left of my LibreOffice, something that is not the first time I
saw.

Other times the fail has manifested more severely and as a flickering
video glitch not only with the Firefox browser and add-ons, but with
other features of the computer. But this time I think it's a LibreOffice
word processor bug.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1857191] Re: Dark themes don't work well with highlighted current line in gedit

2022-10-06 Thread Coci Web
According to the ticket in #27 please try to change the color schema in the
preferences->Fonts&Colors.
https://help.gnome.org/users/gedit/stable/gedit-change-color-scheme.html.en
Gedit can has a different schema than the system...
AND if you upgraded from previous version, you can easyily inherit the old
classic schema.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1991492] Re: Upgrade to version 1.1.0

2022-10-06 Thread IOhannes m zmoelnig
libsndfile-1.1.0 is now (2022-09-06) packaged in Debian and will
automatically be imported into Ubuntu with the next DebianImport.

Unfortunately we missed the freeze deadline for 22.10/kinetic, which
means that the first Ubuntu version with the new library version will be
23.04

Same with send e-mail as open-document and word document. Only send

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1779890] Re: Nautilus does not use a valid Kerberos ticket when accessing Samba share

2022-10-06 Thread michaelwaterman
Is this bug still being worked on? I'm running into the issue. Took me a
couple of days before I found this bug here. I've applied the workaround
from Val (vk1266) listed on 2020-05-28 and that works, problem is not
visible anymore.

Can I be of assistance in anyway? Have an environment where I can repro
the issue consistently.

Title:
Nautilus does not use a valid Kerberos ticket when accessing Samba
  share

Status in gvfs:
  New
Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Nautilus prompts for username and password when accessing a Samba
share on a network drive, despite having a perfectly valid unexpired
Kerberos ticket. The Kerberos ticket is obtained automatically at
logon by authentication against a Samba Active Directory server (Samba
  AD-DC).

Accessing the same Samba share with the same Kerberos ticket via
  "smbclient //host/sharename -k" works fine.

One known workaround is: "nautilus -q", and then "killall gvfsd".
After that, accessing the Samba share with Nautilus works normally as
  it should.

I did not experience this issue in Ubuntu 16.04. It appears that a
regression was introduced somewhere between 16.04 and 18.04.

The issue is quite annoying and confusing for the users who are used
to accessing Samba shares on the network drive without being prompted
  for their username and password.

The issue appears to manifest itself usually not on the first access
to a Samba share, but on subsequent accesses after a system reboot or
upon user logout/login. Strangely, removing ~/.cache/ibus/bus/registry
file before user login appears to fix the issue for the current user
session, but then the problem reappears upon subsequent user logins or
  after a system reboot.

Nemo appears to have the same problem as Nautilus.

You have been subscribed to a public bug:

The AAC codec is not showing up in the sound settings when a device that
is capable of that codec is connected, but other supported codecs do
work.Tested using the Sony WH1000XM4 and other bluetooth devices that
support the codec.

** Affects: pipewire (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1991530] Re: After upgrading to Ubuntu 22.10-beta I lost the sound.

2022-10-06 Thread jmst
Hi,

Searching the internet, I found a valid solution for the problem (after
many failed attempts...). Will the solution last?

https://askubuntu.com/questions/1406646/ubuntu-22-04-audio-output-not-working-dummy-audio

This looks very similar to No sound output devices listed after upgrade
from 21.10 to 22.04

that I could solve with:

|sudo touch /usr/share/pipewire/media-session.d/with-pulseaudio
systemctl --user restart pipewire-session-manager |

(credits go to https://askubuntu.com/users/1156299/adam)

Best regards,

Joaquim Torres

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1991927] Re: On line account login unavailable

2022-10-06 Thread Sebastien Bacher
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. Unfortunately, we cannot work on this bug because your
description didn't include enough information. You may find it helpful
to read "How to report bugs effectively"
http://www.chiark.greenend.org.uk/~sgtatham/bugs.html. We'd be grateful
if you would then provide a more complete description of the problem.

We have instructions on debugging some types of problems at
http://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingProcedures.

At a minimum, we need:

1. The specific steps or actions you took that caused you to encounter the
problem.
2. The behavior you expected.
3. The behavior you actually encountered (in as much detail as possible).

Please also ensure that you include the release and flavour of Ubuntu
that you are using.

Thank you!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1971242] Re: printing PDF appears always grey, no color

2022-10-06 Thread dm
I thing it is terrible situation and an absolute no go. Since release of
22.04 I have to use Microsoft Windows or MacOS for printing colored
documents. And it seems nobody cares about it. Really? Not only the
snapd bullshit which makes Firefox completely unusable for NFS/LDAP
users. Maybe I should switch to Debian or another STABLE distribution.
Ubuntu has forgotten its basics.
