[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003611] Re: Incorrect icon when launching app from symlink

2023-01-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Sounds like gnome-shell/mutter is failing to honour the _NET_WM_ICON
property, although perhaps that would only be possible in Xorg sessions.

Regardless, please run:

  apport-collect 2003611

to provide more system information.

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Package freefilesync installs /usr/bin/FreeFileSync and
/usr/bin/freefilesync is a symlink to FreeFileSync

If you launch the programme from the command line with freefilesync
the icon will be the default system wheel icon and not the icon of the
  app.

If using FreeFileSync icon is the one of the app as expected.

Btw: There is no such problem on KDE. Icon is always correct in the
  taskbar.

Same thing happens when the screen saver kicks in.

Gnome still thinks that there is an external monitor and an extended

  Work-around:

Disconnect the HDMI cable, reboot and then connect HDMI.

This is probably a duplicate of bug #1992563.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003607] Re: Xorg freeze

2023-01-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thank you for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make
Ubuntu better. It sounds like some part of the system has crashed. To
help us find the cause of the crash please follow these steps:

1. Look in /var/crash for crash files and if found run:
 ubuntu-bug YOURFILE.crash
Then tell us the ID of the newly-created bug.

2. If step 1 failed then look at https://errors.ubuntu.com/user/ID where
ID is the content of file /var/lib/whoopsie/whoopsie-id on the machine.
Do you find any links to recent problems on that page? If so then please
send the links to us.

3. Next time a freeze happens please wait 10 seconds, reboot and then run:
 journalctl -b-1 > prevboot.txt
and attach the resulting text file here.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003679] [NEW] calculator sqr(5.2x10^1) = 2.28 te he. he should be 7.2:)

2023-01-22 Thread Richard N. Stone
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 22.04LTS standard calculator in advanced mode.

click on Sqrt
enter 5.2x10^1paste from a previous result
click on enter
answer is 2.28x10^1 (ie 22.8 is the sqr of 52)
should be 7.2111
obviously, someone got tangled up parsing the exponent.
Hilarious case of shoelaces tied together :)
Regards from hot sticky Townsville, Australia
(it's summer here).

(How many Pentiums does it take to change a light bulb... 2.)
(which was a far more nefarious bug)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003626] Re: Hello, my RAM is constantly overflowing due to gnome-shell. The total write to disk takes more than 4 GB after an hour of work. How can I solve this problem?

2023-01-22 Thread Daniel van Vugt
Thanks for the bug report.

Since most gnome-shell bugs and memory leaks are caused by extensions,
the first thing to try is to remove all of these:

'user-th...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'vit...@corecoding.com',
'gsconn...@andyholmes.github.io',
'places-m...@gnome-shell-extensions.gcampax.github.com',
'logomenu@aryan_k',
'desktop-c...@schneegans.github.com',
'compiz-alike-magic-lamp-eff...@hermes83.github.com',
'clipboard-indica...@tudmotu.com',
'caffe...@patapon.info',
'burn-my-wind...@schneegans.github.com',
'blur-my-shell@aunetx'

Please also delete any locally installed extensions by running:

  cd ~/.local/share/gnome-shell/
  rm -rf extensions

and then log in again.

After all unsupported extensions have been removed, please tell us if
the memory problem persists.

Thanks for the bug report.

Please take care to ensure each bug report covers one issue only. You
should open a separate bug for each issue so please reword this bug to
describe one of the issues only.

The problem with text and icons disappearing sounds like it might be bug
1876632.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003661] [NEW] File drag-n-drop, automatic resolution changing, and shared clipboard are all broken on Kubuntu 22.10

2023-01-22 Thread Aaron Rainbolt
Public bug reported:

Note that, in my experience, this bug *only* affect Kubuntu 22.10 and
Ubuntu Studio 22.10, however Ubuntu Studio specifically does not support
VMs, and I assume that fixing the problem in Kubuntu will fix the
problem in Ubuntu Studio too.

Steps to reproduce:

1. Install GNOME Boxes on an Ubuntu machine.
2. Install Kubuntu 22.10 into a GNOME Boxes virtual machine.
3. Maximize the GNOME Boxes window.
4. Boot the newly installed system.

Expected result: The VM resolution should change itself to fit the
window perfectly.

Actual result: The VM resolution remains at some default resolution
(1024x768?).

Additional details: Shared clipboard also does not work (the clipboard
of the host and the guest remain separate), and file drag-n-drop from
host to guest does not work (no files are transferred into the guest).
All of these features work out of the box on all flavors of Ubuntu 22.04
(Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio included), and on all flavors of Ubuntu 22.10
except for Kubuntu and Ubuntu Studio.

Also, I do not remember having tested file drag-n-drop or shared
clipboard on Ubuntu Studio, but I have tested both on Kubuntu.

I believe this is the result of spice-vdagent either failing to start,
dying shortly after starting, or glitching and remaining active but not
actually doing anything its supposed to. If I stop all services related
to spice-vdagent (spice-vdagentd.socket, spice-vdagentd, and spice
vdagent, note the "d" at the end of the first two), ensure that all
spice-vdagent and spice-vdagentd processes are terminated by using
killall, and then run "sudo spice-vdagentd -x" in a terminal, then I am
able to set the VM screen resolution to match the window perfectly.
Shared clipboard and file drag-n-drop still don't work, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998917] Re: Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

2023-01-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
Sorry, what I have asked you for in the previous comment is not correct
in this case, you do not need to do it. Instead, do the following:

Run the command

lpadmin -p testipp -E -v ipp://NPI61F41D.local:631/ipp/printer -m
driverless:ipp://NPI61F41D.local:631/ipp/printer -o PageSize=A4

Test this queue by the following 2 commands:

lp -d testipp 170x230.pdf

lp -d testipp -o print-scaling=none 170x230.pdf

Independent whether you get a correct or wrong printout, please attach
the error_log and /etc/cups/ppd/testipp.ppd

  2. Draw a rectangle 170mm x 230mm.
  3. Print it.

  Expected result:

  Actual result:

The rectangle measures 168mm x 226mm, a difference of approximately
  2%.

I print a lot of labels. I make them in both LibreOffice (for mail
merge) and Inkscape (when I want them all the same).

I use standard downloaded templates in LibreOffice and in Inkscape I
  have made my own manually.

I recently upgraded to 22.04 and now whenever I print any of my
existing documents they no longer line up with the labels. They line
up in the top left of the page but at the bottom right they are
misaligned, shifted up and left. This happens because the entire page
  is now printed 2% smaller.

Nothing else has changed about my setup: it is the same printer and
the same documents printing differently. The printer is a network
  printer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998917] Re: Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

2023-01-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
Could you stop CUPS via

sudo systenctl stop cups

then edit your PPD file
/etc/cups/ppd/HP_LaserJet_100_colorMFP_M175nw_61F41D.ppd changing the
line (line 21)

*cupsFilter2: "application/vnd.cups-pdf application/pdf 200 -"

to

*%cupsFilter2: "application/vnd.cups-pdf application/pdf 200 -"

The added % after the * in the beginning makes a comment line out of the
line, making it inactive. This makes CUPS not trying to send PDF to your
printer any more but the alternative URF Apple Raster) format (via line
22).

Save the modified PPD file and start CUPS again:

sudo systenctl start cups

Try to print. Is the output the correct size now?

It seems that if your printer receives PDF, it tries to scale the PDF
pages down into the frame defined by the printer's unprintable margins,
making them slightly smaller.

Thank you for the additional information.  I didn't realize how it works.

I haven't been using it lately, because I mainly used it to change the
synthesizer volume level of soundcards having hardware synthesizers on
them (the Soundblaster Live, for example), and such soundcards can now
only be used on my oldest machines.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998917] Re: Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

2023-01-22 Thread Alistair Buxton
So attaching the PPD to my bug report about not being able to attach it
seems to have fixed the problem, and now I was able to attach it here.

Title:
Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu
  22.04

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  To reproduce:

  1. Open Inkscape.
  2. Draw a rectangle 170mm x 230mm.
  3. Print it.

  Expected result:

The printed rectangle on paper should measure 170mm x 230mm.

The printer is a network
  printer.

Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
  The meta-packages ubuntu-desktop-minimal / ubuntu-minimal depend on
everything needed for a functioning desktop / server installation
  respectively. Well, almost everything.

Two packages that they don't depend on, but should, or at least it should
recommend them are:
  - cryptsetup
  - lvm2

The reason is that if Ubuntu was installed with disk encryption and/or
LVM turned on, these packages are essential. The system won't even
boot without cryptsetup, for example (found this out the hard way).

The release of Ubuntu you are using: 22.10
The version of the package you are using: ubuntu-desktop-minimal 1.497

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003656] [NEW] "night light" setting only affects one of 2 used screens

2023-01-22 Thread Tomislav
Public bug reported:

I have an external display that I declared my primary display (my laptop
screen being the 2nd one). When night light is applied, it only affects
the built-in display. It should affect both, otherwise it's kind of
useless.

I noticed this just now, no clue how repeatable it is. No known
workaround (maybe "don't use the computer at night?").

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998917] Re: Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

2023-01-22 Thread Alistair Buxton
Okay well it seems to be specific to the PPD file. I wonder why it won't
accept it. I tried adding ".txt" to the filename too but it still
wouldn't accept it. Must be due to the contents.

Anyway that's the PDF I used to test (same as previous one) and I used
the lp command line invocation.

I'll see about getting you the PPD some other way.

Title:
Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu
  22.04

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  To reproduce:

  1. Open Inkscape.
  2. Draw a rectangle 170mm x 230mm.
  3. Print it.

  Expected result:

The printed rectangle on paper should measure 170mm x 230mm.

The printer is a network
  printer.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1990010] Re: VA error: resource allocation failed

2023-01-22 Thread Cody Tipton
** Changed in: chromium-browser (Ubuntu)
Status: In Progress => Fix Released

Title:
  VA error: resource allocation failed

Status in chromium-browser package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  https://github.com/intel/media-driver/issues/1498

  ---

When I play a H264/AAC video with HW decoding enabled on Alderlake
12600k, using Wayland I get the error:

vaCreateSurfaces (import mode) failed, VA error: resource allocation
  failed

After which, chromium will proceed to play the video without HW
  acceleration using ffmpeg.

This is both with using the pre-built snap from channel beta/hwacc and
  a snap built from source.

(NOTE: HW decoding does work with same browser on X11 desktop, using
  VDAVideoDecoder.)

To get more information on this VA error, I built the snap with debug
versions of gmmlib and media-driver (latest git) using the latest git
  from valib as well.

The log output from chromium now mentions why the allocation fails:

I am on wayland, and use these chromium flags:

  export CHROMIUM_FLAGS="--enable-logging=stderr --use-gl=egl --enable-
  features=VaapiVideoDecoder,VaapiVideoEncoder --disable-
  features=UseChromeOSDirectVideoDecoder --ignore-gpu-blocklist
  --disable-gpu-driver-bug-workaround --ozone-platform=wayland"

The video that fails: the 1080p/60 version downloaded from here:
  https://github.com/chthomos/video-media-samples/

I will figure out which is the "unsupported modifier" and report back,
  here.

Note: currently gmmlib and media-driver have failing debug builds, but I have
created pull requests to both:
  https://github.com/intel/media-driver/pull/1491
  https://github.com/intel/gmmlib/pull/97

  CPU: 12600k

  GPU: Intel Alderlake_s (Gen12)

  Snap built with: core20

  Host OS: Ubuntu Kinetic

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2003649] [NEW] Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap

2023-01-22 Thread geole0
Public bug reported:

Hello
I am trying to understand how the three commands testb, icheck and ncheck of
the debugfs command work.
My goal is to use them to find all the sectors allocated to a file.
For this, I created a test set consisting of a 100% full EXT4 partition
containing only one file.
Here are the features:

mount /dev/sda9 /mnt/TEST
df --block-size=512 -text4 | grep TEST
/dev/sda94245641392 0 100% /mnt/TEST

So I think there are only 1064 (42456-41392) unused sectors. To check it, I
make this script:
rm -v testb.in
for ((k=1;k<42457;k++));do
echo testb $k >>testb.in
done
debugfs -f testb.in /dev/sda9 > testb.out 2>err

then I control
head -2 testb.out; tail -2 testb.out ; head -2 err; tail -1 err
debugfs: testb 1
Block 1 marked in use
debugfs: testb 42456
Block 42456 not in use
debugfs 1.46.5 (30-Dec-2021)
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap #6656 for block bitmap
for /dev/sda9
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap #42456 for block bitmap

I can only find this reported incident:

Title:
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap

Status in evince package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:

To check it, I
make this script:
  rm -v testb.in
  for ((k=1;k<42457;k++));do
  echo testb $k >>testb.in
  done
  debugfs -f testb.in /dev/sda9 > testb.out 2>err

  then I control
  head -2 testb.out; tail -2 testb.out ; head -2 err; tail -1 err
  debugfs: testb 1
  Block 1 marked in use
  debugfs: testb 42456
  Block 42456 not in use
  debugfs 1.46.5 (30-Dec-2021)
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap #6656 for block
bitmap for /dev/sda9
Illegal block number passed to ext2fs_test_block_bitmap #42456 for block
bitmap for /dev/sda9

I can only find this reported incident:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/e2fsprogs/+bug/1487787

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1998917] Re: Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu 22.04

2023-01-22 Thread Till Kamppeter
I am trying to find out what exactly is happening and therefore I need
to know somewhat more.

Could you switch to debug logging via

cupsctl --debug-logging

and then print a job where the problem occurs. After that attach the
file /var/log/cups/error_log to this bug report.

Also attach your print queue's PPD file from /etc/cups/ppd/ to this bug
report. It is the one named as your print queue.

Please do not compress the files and do not package them together.
Attach them one by one.

Title:
Everything prints approximately 2% too small after upgrading to Ubuntu
  22.04

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  To reproduce:

  1. Open Inkscape.
  2. Draw a rectangle 170mm x 230mm.
  3. Print it.

  Expected result:

The printed rectangle on paper should measure 170mm x 230mm.

The printer is a network
  printer.
