Title:
Gdm3 with smartcard asks for login/smartcard pin even if there is no
  smartcard authentication enabled

Status in gdm3 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
I use my Ubuntu PC with Yubikey almost always plugged in. It provides
several security token interfaces, such as U2F, GPG smartcard,
proprieritary Yubico interfaces (of which I mostly use TOTP codes),
and also PIV smartcard. However, I haven't configured a PIV smartcard
  on it.

Whenever I login into the system having Yubikey plugged in, I'm prompted for
login name, and then for PIN for some smartcard while also being asked to plug
in one. This is very misleading on several layers:
  1. I have the device providing smartcard plugged id,
  2. But it's not the smartcard GDM would think it is as it's not configured
properly,
  3. There are no local smartcard-authenticating users right now in the system,
  3. There are no remote authentication systems configured on the system (so no
ActiveDirectory-smartcard logins or such).

If I unplug the token UX goes back on old good track.

Given the circumstances above, I'd consider that GDM (and, on my bet,
any PAM configuration it uses) shouldn't offer to login using
smartcard if there is no way to actually do so. I feel something is
off here, so I'm reporting a bug. It could be an upstream problem
though; it also could be an upstream SSSD problem, or all combined.

I believe there is a more clear user experience:
  1. GDM should display users that can login into the system, as it always does
(if configured). It may also provide entering other login name (also if
configured). This is GDM usually does without smartcards altogether.
  2. When user is chosen (from the list or manually typed in), check can this
user even authenticate with smartcards (i.e. if any of available smartcards is
actually recognised for this user). If so, then ask for PIN. Else, don't show
anything about smartcards at all (this includes when SSSD is not configured for
any AD or related and this user has no local smartcard configuration). This can
switch there & back based on device events.
I've seen other OS doing this.

Ubuntu/Gnome session doesn't ask me for PIN for a smartcard on a lock
screen, so I guess it doesn't support it at all or correctly finds out
it can't be used. Even more, I couldn't find a way to actually add my
smartcard as a local login method.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2041736] [NEW] dm crypt unlock prompt doesn't respond to key presses

2023-10-28 Thread Andrew
Public bug reported:

After upgrading my MacbookPro 14,1 from 23.04 to 23.10 dm-crypt unlock prompt
doesn't respond to key presses and I'm not able to type in my password to
unlock the disk.
The only option that works now is to boot with the kernel left from 23.04
(6.2.0-35-generic).
Any tips to troubleshoot the issue would be much appreciated.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2041732] [NEW] Touchpad is extra-sensitive on Wayland

2023-10-28 Thread Connor Nolan
Public bug reported:

Whenever I use Wayland, the touchpad is *much* more sensitive than on

   * A minor release with a total of ? bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
  features were removed.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

gnome-shell gets unceremoniously SIGKILLed on some Ryzen systems,
sometimes when the screen locks, sometimes when launching particular
  apps.

  [ Workaround ]

  Add this to /etc/environment:

    MUTTER_DEBUG_KMS_THREAD_TYPE=user

  and then reboot.

  [ Test Plan ]

Not all Ryzen systems (including one I just purchased) are able to
reproduce the bug. We have no choice but to leave final verification
to the community. Anyone affected should try locking their screen and
verify they are not instantly returned to the login screen.

[ Where problems could occur ]

Anywhere in frame scheduling and particularly for mouse cursor
movement since that's what the real-time thread exists to optimize.

  [ Original Description ]

I have this issue on Ubuntu 23.10. Lock screen works only with an external
monitor connected. Otherwise the session is ended and the user is logged out
and brought to the gdm screen.
  All works in xorg.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2041722] [NEW] Duplex printing error on Brother MFC-J825DW

2023-10-28 Thread David Tombs
Public bug reported:

Using the default "implicitclass" printer setup by Ubuntu, trying to do
Duplex printing does not function properly. E.g., printing a four page
document will result in the printer printing pages 4, 3, 2, and 1 in
that order on four separate sheets of paper. Note that pages 3 and 1
print upside-down.

As in bug #2041721, manually adding the printer using "dnssd" and using
that one resolves the issue. I am opening a separate bug in case this is
a different root cause, though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2041721] [NEW] Brother MFC-J825DW squares copy number when printing

2023-10-28 Thread David Tombs

Using the default "implicitclass" printer setup by Ubuntu, printing to

Title:
Brother MFC-J825DW squares copy number when printing

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Using the default "implicitclass" printer setup by Ubuntu, printing to
my Brother MFC-J825DW "squares" the number of copies. E.g., trying to
do 2 copies prints 4 and trying to do 3 copies prints 9.

I manually added the printer using the "dnssd" connection instead, and
using that one resolves the issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 738526] Re: crash accessing font info with xfs in fontpath

2023-10-28 Thread Paul White
Both upstream bug reports were fixed along time ago

An 'Incomplete' bug report raised against Ubuntu 10.10 is
of little use now as the last manual comment was made almost
ten years ago.

Will close as being fixed due to any comments suggesting that
the bug is still extant in a currently supported release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1806242] Re: kernel: [drm:intel_pipe_update_end [i915]] *ERROR* Atomic update failure on pipe A/B/C

2023-10-28 Thread Paul White
We are sorry that we do not always have the capacity to review all
reported bugs in a timely manner. This bug (and its duplicates) were
reported some time ago and there have been many changes in Ubuntu since
that time. It seems that only releases of Ubuntu that are no longer
supported are referred to:

Ubuntu 19.10 (eoan) reached end-of-life on July 17, 2020.
Ubuntu 18.04 (bionic) reached end-of-standard-support on May 31, 2023.

Does anyone still see the reported problem while using a currently
supported version of Ubuntu? Please let us know if you do and with
which one(s) otherwise this report can be left to expire in
approximately 60 days time.

Thank you for helping make Ubuntu better.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1357227] Re: broken charset/encoding autodetection for encrypted messages

2023-10-28 Thread Paul White
The upstream bug report has seen no activity for nine years now.

There has been no reply to comment #6 for over five years.

The Debian bug report was closed as 'fixed' in another package.

I'm closing this now as 'Invalid' but if it is still an issue
then both this bug report and the upstream Thunderbird report
need to be updated with current 'version' information.

Title:
broken charset/encoding autodetection for encrypted messages

Status in Mozilla Thunderbird:
  New
Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu:
  Invalid
Status in kdepim package in Debian:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  Version: 1:31.0+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1

  Hi,

this is a bug Mozilla™ Thunderbird and KDEPIM share:

When I send an Inline PGP encrypted message, whose body is using
UTF-8, to another user, the message is ASCII armoured (and thus 7bit).
The other user, running Thunderbird or Kontact, (or my own Kontact
instance in the “sent-mail” folder), gets the message and interprets
the post-decryption body as ISO-8859-1 (or Windows-1252, probably)
  instead of UTF-8.

Manually switching the encoding to Unicode in the menu corrects this…
  for this one message. (See
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/thunderbird/+bug/1108980 as
  well.)

The problem here is that the human message encoding (everything within
the PGP armour) must be separated from the transport message encoding
(the RFC822 message in which the “-BEGIN PGP MESSAGE”…“END PGP
MESSAGE-” is transmitted) must be separated from each other, which
  they aren’t.

Please fix this, it harms using those MUAs in an enterprise
  environment.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2041716] [NEW] [SRU] libreoffice 7.5.8 for lunar

2023-10-28 Thread Rico Tzschichholz
Public bug reported:

[Impact]

 * LibreOffice 7.5.8 is in its eigth and last bugfix release of the 7.5 line:
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/ReleasePlan/7.5#7.5.8_release

 * Version 7.5.5 is currently released in lunar. For a list of fixed bugs
compared to 7.5.7 see the list of bugs fixed in the release candidates of 7.5.8
(that's a total of ? bugs):
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.5.8/RC1#List_of_fixed_bugs
 https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Releases/7.5.8/RC2#List_of_fixed_bugs

7.5.8 RC2 is identical to the 7.5.8 release

 * Given the nature of the project, the complexity of the codebase and
the high level of quality assurance upstream, it is preferable to SRU a
minor release rather than cherry-pick selected bug fixes.

[Testing]

 * Upstream testing. Bugs fixed upstream typically include
unit/regression tests, and the release itself is extensively exercised
(both in an automated manner and manually).

  * A recent set of upstream's automated jenkins testing can be found here:
https://ci.libreoffice.org/job/gerrit_75/1762/

  * More information about the upstream QA testing can be found here:
* Automated tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Automated_Tests
* Automated UI tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/Development/UITests
* Regression tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Regression_Tests
* Feature tests
  https://wiki.documentfoundation.org/QA/Testing/Feature_Tests

 * Launchpad testing. The libreoffice packages include autopkgtests that were
run and verified as passing.
Tested build can be found at
https://launchpad.net/~ricotz/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+sourcepub/15348703/+listing-archive-extra
* [amd64] ...
* [arm64] ...
* [armhf] ...
* [ppc64el] ...
* [riscv64] not available
* [s390x] ...
 * General smoke testing of all the applications in the office suite were
carried out by going through the manual testplan as documented by:
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Process/Merges/TestPlans/libreoffice

[Regression Potential]

 * A minor release with a total of ? bug fixes always carries the
potential for introducing regressions, even though it is a bugfix-only
release, meaning that no new features were added, and no existing
features were removed.

 * A combination of autopkgtests and careful smoke testing as described
above should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked
in.

Title:
Ubuntu 23.10 Latvian keyboard layout (apostrophe) broken

Status in wayland package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
When using keyboard layout Latvian (apostrophe), when writing accented
characters like "š", second character is outputed accented, too.

When writing, for example, 'so, šō is outputted (should be šo)

When testing keyboard during Ubuntu 23.10 installation and choosing
Latvian (apostrophe) layout, the behaviour was correct.

    affects ubuntu/mantic
