Title:
terminate process when processing svg file

Status in librsvg package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
  - Description
In 2.52.5, the stable version distributed on ubuntu22, the process is
terminated due to large font size when processing svg files.

The vulnerability occurs in the assert!(h >= 0.0); code in
src/text.rs:359. Since the font size can be controlled by an attacker,
  this is a 'Reachable assertion'.

An attacker can prove the poc by using a large value for the font size
inside the tag of the svg file.

Any application that uses a vulnerable version of the librsvg package
may be affected. I observed that other applications using version
  2.52.5 terminated.

This can prove it using the rsvg-convert tool provided when building
librsvg version 2.52.5, and also the Image Viewer does not execute
  normally and terminates.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-02-14 Thread John Johansen
So appimages are interesting. They don't all need a profile. I have run
several that are not using user namespaces, or only need to be able to
create the user namespace and don't need capabilities so the default
unpriviled_userns profile works for them.

It is applications that need privileges within their namespace that are
problematic.

Right now no matter what we do, we are stuck with less than satisfactory
solutions. The user must physically intervene in some way to make it so
the application can run.

I see basically 3 options.

1. Just have the user fix manually, a really bad experience.
2. Seth's suggestion of creating a small script to create a template profile
3. have a default profile already loaded as part of the base set and go with
the security label approach. ie. tag the appimage with an apparmor security
xattr.

Neither 2, or 3 can determine the set of needed capabilities in advance,
but the current approach is to just grant the capabilities (unconfined
mode), we will be able to restrict that better in 24.10 but there just
isn't time to land the improved capabilities work for 24.04.

Approach 1 could address the capabilities but, that is an awful lot of
pain to put on the user.

All approaches will require user to have access to sudo because loading
profiles and creating the security xattr are privileged operations.

If aa-notify is installed we could alert the user, and give them
directions to a document explaining what to do. This would require some
work to seed aa-notify by default (would have to be approved by the
different flavors). To make this more amenable we could add a new
mode/default filter that only notifies for user namespace denials. This
is a small chunk of work that could be achieved in the next two weeks.

The long term goal is to create a behavior similar to what the mac is doing
with downloaded applications. The unknown application will create a prompt and
the user will need to go to the security center to enable it.

As for restraints on appimages, I wouldn't bother for 24.04, there just
isn't time. This side of things will get improvements as well. These
template profiles are just a start and are to get fleshed out in the
future. Prompting the user for certain accesses etc is coming in the
future as well. For now lets just focus on the basics of getting
applications to work.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2046844] Re: AppArmor user namespace creation restrictions cause many applications to crash with SIGTRAP

2024-02-14 Thread Seth Arnold
Scarlett, Simon and I had discussed preparing a small program that could
prepare a wrapper profile: given a path to an appimage, it could emit a
small profile to /etc/apparmor.d/ for the file, with the right
attachment path and then load the profile.

As I understand our new strategy, it would probably also have to include
whatever capabilities that appimage uses as part of setting up the new
namespaces -- ideally, it'd be the same capabilities from appimage to
appimage.

If there's some reasonable restraints on appimages, like using
XDG_SOMETHING for user data storage, that might be nice, too. But that's
harder to do.

Thanks

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2051466] Re: Un-clickable/inactive menu items Firefox/topbar conflict

2024-02-14 Thread Daniel van Vugt
This sounds like either bug 1986451 or bug 2012388. The easiest way to
tell is to run:

  gsettings set org.gnome.shell.extensions.appindicator legacy-tray-
enabled false

or

  gnome-extensions disable ubuntu-appindicat...@ubuntu.com

and then log in again. If the problem is solved then it was bug 2012388.

  Un-clickable/inactive menu items Firefox/topbar conflict

Status in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I'm running Ubuntu 23.10 kernel 6.6.7 both wayland, and Xorg
protocols, and Gnome and/or not gnome. Although it makes no difference
which kernel or protocol is running as anything up to 6.7 kernel (So
far) does the same sort of thing.

When a right clicked menu item is over of the topbar, the item is unlickable.
If the item is below the "Topbar", it seems to work as designed. Furthermore,
there is a larger conflict with certain apps, such as Zoiper5 (A voip
soft-phone application). In which the entire area of the upper right corner of
the browser is unlickable, yet when it is clicked on; say to a reduce the
screen (-) sign or the delete exit (X) sign the application such as Zoiper5
comes to the forefront instead of reducing the browser. As if, it has taken
over the entire 1/4 section of the upper right corner clickable area.
Very strange. To actually get my Zoiper5 to work, at the very least. I had to
add a gnome extension "Just Perfection" (Not a great ext, but it did what I
needed, and set the topbar at the bottom, where it caused less problems.) and
move the "topbar" to the bottom so as to get it out of the way of my right
click menus. So this could be a Gnome problem, or an Ubuntu 23.10 problem,
and/or a zoiper5 problem, or a combination of the bunch.
Although it does seem to reproduce itself even when Zoiper5 is not installed.
Zoiper5 just seems to confound the issue even more.

I started having this issue with Ubuntu 24.04, so I reloaded 23.10,
and tried many kernels and all caused some issues, but the newer the
kernel the more issues it caused, it seemed. I hope this helps narrow
  it down.

Windows go to behind others when clicking with mouse

Status in mutter package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
After installing ubuntu graphics-drivers ppa nvidia-550 driver, the
  bug appears.

When there are several windows on top of each other, clicking within
the topmost window, the window seems to disappear. Actually, the
window is still there, but just goes behind another window, that comes
in front of the clicked window. The program in the window that is
clicked will not notice the click.

This does not happen with all programs. Mines is a good example
program. If the window fills full screen, this happens, but if it is
smaller, only partially covering the screen, it does not happen.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2051466] [NEW] Un-clickable/inactive menu items Firefox/topbar conflict

2024-02-14 Thread Launchpad Bug Tracker
You have been subscribed to a public bug:

I'm running Ubuntu 23.10 kernel 6.6.7 both wayland, and Xorg protocols,
and Gnome and/or not gnome. Although it makes no difference which kernel
or protocol is running as anything up to 6.7 kernel (So far) does the
same sort of thing.

I started having this issue with Ubuntu 24.04, so I reloaded 23.10, and
tried many kernels and all caused some issues, but the newer the kernel
the more issues it caused, it seemed. I hope this helps narrow it down.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2053197] [NEW] User faces an error when last used folder is unavailable : for instance the usb drive has been removed

2024-02-14 Thread antistress
Public bug reported:

Hi,
My father runs simple scan and sometimes I use myself his computer to scan
documents onto my usb key.
Then, when it's his turn to use simple scan, he got an error (since my usb key
is not plugged anymore) that he doesn't understand.
Maybe the message erreor should be replaced with a choice of folder, or, maybe
better, automatically select the former folder if the last folder is missing
Thanks !

Thanks for the ping.. I have had no feedback from NVIDIA (DGX,
Bluefield, Tegra), and I have informed them that from now on, we
consider that 'no feedback' meant they are ok with the change.

  Issue/Bug Description:

  as per konkor/cpufreq#48 and
  http://konkor.github.io/cpufreq/faq/#irqbalance-detected

irqbalance is technically not needed on desktop systems (supposedly it
is mainly for servers), and may actually reduce performance and power
savings. It appears to provide benefits only to server environments
that have relatively-constant loading. If it is truly a server-
oriented package, then it shouldn't be installed by default on a
desktop/laptop system and shouldn't be included in desktop OS images.

Steps to reproduce (if you know):

This is potentially an issue with all default installs.

  Expected behavior:

  n/a

  Other Notes:

I can safely remove it via "sudo apt purge irqbalance" without any
apparent adverse side-effects. If someone is running a situation where
they need it, then they always have the option of installing it from
  the repositories.

Title:
  lpoptions -d as root

Status in cups package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in cups source package in Jammy:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
  Copied from https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/issues/454

Yair Yarom submitted Debian bug 1008053 and observed that running
lpoptions as root does not update /etc/cups/lpoptions but
  /root/.cups/lpoptions.

Running lpoptions as root (e.g. "lpoptions -d HP-OfficeJet") should
update /etc/cups/lpoptions to be the defaults for all users. But
instead it tries to update /root/.cups/lpoptions.

This has been fixed upstream in cups, in debian sid, and mantic.
Proposing to add this change in jammy and older (still supported)
  series as well.

The fix is a one line change in
  https://github.com/OpenPrinting/cups/pull/456

  Thanks.

This might make one think[1][2] that it will install a critically
outdated Chromium while it does not, because it installs the snap.

  [Test plan]

Install the package and confirm the version change with e.g.

    dpkg -l | grep '^ii *chromium-browser *2:1snap1-0ubuntu1'

  [Regression potential]

If the version were incorrectly constructed the deb build could fail.

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: network-manager-openvpn

I use OpenVPN to secure my wireless network. A connection with the
  command-line openvpn client works perfectly.

The problem I have is that I do not use the OpenVPN-specific features
at all to configure my network, I just use TAP and the clients should
get their network information via DHCP (IP address, routes etc.)
through this TAP interface. When trying to connect to the VPN via the
network-manager applet, I get a VPN Connect Failure with the message
that no adequate network configuration has been provided, which makes
the applet unusable for my purpose.

Could you please add a feature (check box in the config dialog etc.)
to run dhclient on the tap* interface after a connection has been
  established?

As far as I have seen, a lot of other people have such a configuration
so this would be great help. Thanks in advance!

  I am using Hardy Heron.

Bug description:
  [Impact]
The graphics HWE stack from mantic needs to be backported for 22.04.4

  directx-headers
  - build-dep of the new Mesa

  mesa
  - new major release (23.2.x)
  - new HW support, Meteor Lake..

  [Test case]
We want to cover at least 2-3 different, widely used and already previously
supported GPU generations from both AMD and Intel which are supported by this
release, as those are the ones that cover most bases; nouveau users tend to
switch to the NVIDIA blob after installation. No need to test ancient GPU's
supported by mesa-amber. And best to focus on the newer generations (~5y and
newer) as the older ones are less likely to break at this point.
  - AMD: Vega, Navi1x (RX5000*), Navi2x (RX6000*), Navi3x (RX7000*)
  - Intel: gen9 (SKL/APL/KBL/CFL/WHL/CML), gen11 (ICL), gen12
(TGL/ADL/RKL/RPL/DG2)

Install the new packages and run some tests:
  - check that the desktop is still using hw acceleration and hasn't fallen
back to swrast/llvmpipe
  - run freely available benchmarks that torture the GPU (Unigine
Heaven/Valley/Superposition)
  - run some games from Steam if possible

and in each case check that there is no gfx corruption happening or
  worse.

Note that upstream releases have already been tested for OpenGL and
  Vulkan conformance by their CI.

  [Where things could go wrong]
This is a major update of Mesa, there could be regressions but we'll try to
catch any with testing. And since it shares bugs with mantic, we'd already know
if there are serious issues. We will backport the final 23.2.x at a later
stage, the first backport is needed for enabling Intel Meteor Lake.

    * Restore M-A installability of focal/i386 package (LP#1916327)
by adding xenial, bionic, focal, jammy to the list of releases
  built with the ATK bridge, but not enabling it by default;
keep jessie on, stretch and sid and mantic/noble off the list:
please report bugs for issues with the bridge, so sthibault
  can find, debug, fix them

  See LP: #1916327

The alternative is to publish atk-wrapper for i386 in mantic, jammy
  and focal.

  Options:
   a) rollback the fix in Ubuntu
   b) publish atk-wrapper

Title:
gvfsd-trash uses 50GB of memory and crashes pc

Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Every day this week every few hours my pc would suddenly freeze. I
noticed this morning in System Monitor that an app called gvfsd-trash
was at 30GB RAM. I killed it. It restarted itself and in a few minutes
  went up to 50GB.

Google said it had something to do with the recycle bin. So I tried to
empty that but my file explorer hung and it said The name:1.183 was
not provided by any .service files.

So I downloaded trash-cli from apt and tried trash clear. That still
  didn't help.

So I went into ./local/share/Trash and there was some file in there
with restricted permissions. So I used sudo rm -rf and it seems to
  have finally stopped.

People, whatever this app is doing, please let it handle files it
doesn't have permission to access without bringing down the whole
  system! Thanks.
