Obviously this package should *never* be installed on a desktop or even on most VMs, but only within WSL instances. However... wslu provides the virtual package www-browser, as one of its features is to open links in Windows 10 using the default browser set there. This means that if a package depends or recommends www-browser, it may attempt to pull in one of several packages, wslu included. In the past, this hasn't been a problem because Firefox was present on all flavor images, and Firefox provides www-browser as well. However, now that Firefox is a Snap, it is possible for Firefox to be installed without the firefox transitional apt package being installed. (This is the case in a default installation of Kubuntu Noble Beta.) As it turns out, Kubuntu Noble Beta ships with *no* packages that provide www- browser, meaning that any package that depends on it will have to install a new browser. Due to some stroke of misfortune, apt is picking wslu out of all packages as the package for this use case. Installing gimp-help-en will also install www-browser, which results in wslu becoming installed. wslu causes quite a few problems when installed on a desktop system - among them, the syslog is spammed with errors due to the system not in fact being a WSL VM, audio breaks in weird ways, and application launchers sometimes fail. Why this happens is unclear, but the issues appear to resolve once wslu is removed from the system. It is therefore probably a good idea to avoid wslu becoming installed on accident in this way. Probably the best way to resolve this is to ensure that some package that provides www-browser is available on every Ubuntu image. This could be done via seeding or by adding a package to ubuntu-minimal. Alternatively, wslu could be set to no longer provide www-browser, though it's unclear if that would break its functionality. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060814] Re: dist-upgrade in noble fails when using TPM FDE
I have uploaded printer-driver-foo2zjs 20200505dfsg0-2ubuntu6 where I have moved the firmware file directory to /var/lib/foo2zjs/firmware/. Ken VanDine has tested this version and it works on Ubuntu 24.04 with TPM-based FDE, not interfering with the snapped kernel any more. This will not break printing. /lib/firmware is only for firmware files which are managed by the kernel. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2061022] [NEW] Intermittent keyboard lag with Tecknet EKB01002BK01 keyboard
Public bug reported: This bug manifests itself slightly differently across different scenarios. To summarise, scrolling through a long file/directory listing in Midnight Commander (e.g. > 40 items) causes the cursor to lag, stutter and pause. In 23.10 if the up/down key is depressed there is a delay of about 0.25 seconds before moving onto the previous/next item. In 24.04, the cursor will stick on the previous/last item until it is released. This behavior is not exhibited in a console session [e.g. via Ctrl+Alt+F5], with Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or under Wayland. It also does not seem to affect the Tecknet EMK01707 keyboard under Ubuntu 23.10. This behavior has been observed using both Guake terminal [Version 3.10] and Gnome terminal [Version 3.52.0 for GNOME 46]. [Affected Ubuntu versions] Ubuntu 23.10 Ubuntu 24.04 [To recreate] Open mc in terminal and browse through a long directory/file listing (> 40 items). This behavior will manifest immediately or after a few cycles. [Expected behavior] The cursor should scroll linearly throughout a list without pauses, juddering, lag or requiring the user to release the key. [Workarounds] 1. Switch to Wayland 2. Use a different keyboard. The problem was not apparent using a Tecknet EMK01707 keyboard under 23.10, however this has not been tested under Noble Numbat. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037017] Re: Sharing tab hangs gnome-control-center
Failed to reproduce on noble beta images; marking invalid as that's two failures now. ** Changed in: gnome-control-center (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2037017 Title: Sharing tab hangs gnome-control-center Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: On the Ubuntu Desktop for Raspberry Pi current Mantic beta images (with gnome-control-center version 1.45.0-1ubuntu1), on a Raspberry Pi 4B, switching to the "Sharing" tab hangs the application (presenting the Force Quit / Wait overlay prompt). Worse, re-launching the application simply re-opens the "Sharing" tab resulting in another hang. A workaround for now is to launch the application from the command-line, forcing initial selection of a different tab, e.g. "gnome-control-center info-overview". Launching the application from the command line with "gnome-control- center sharing" also causes the hang, but unfortunately there's no additional console output to shed any light on the situation. I'm not sure if this is Pi specific (haven't attempted it on any other platforms yet). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2057842] Re: FFe: [MIR] freedp2 -> freerdp3 in main

It is requested to switch both to freerdp3. Therefore only one version of freerdp will be in main. freerdp2 will be demoted to universe since many universe packages use it and are not prepared to switch to freerdp3. This also requests updating gnome-control-center to fully enable the features of gnome-remote-desktop 46. Impact -- A headline feature of GNOME 46 is support as a Remote Desktop server without requiring someone to already be logged in locally ("headless" mode). This feature requires gnome-remote-desktop 46. gnome-remote-desktop 46 requires freerdp3. Impact if this does not happen -- - We would need to patch gnome-control-center to use the older Remote Desktop panel (or at least hide the new tab for Remote Login) - We would need to keep using gnome-remote-desktop 45 instead of 46. The gnome-remote-desktop upstream maintainers would be unhappy with this decision. gnome-remote-desktop 45 was tested against Mutter 45. Changes in Mutter 46 may require changes in gnome-remote-desktop for things to work well although a simple test showed that basic remote desktop seems to work ok with the mismatch. (See comment #1 from upstream developer.) Why this did not land sooner --- It required the packaging of a new source package freerdp3. And we had to do this sooner than Debian. Sorry too many things to do before Feature Freeze and this did not make it. Affected Packages - - gnome-remote-desktop 45 -> 46 - gnome-control-center (to update the Remote Desktop settings page) - remmina 1.4.34 -> 1.4.35 and swap build-depends. Remmina 1.4.34 did not work with freerdp 3.3 in my testing - gnome-connections (build-dependency swap): Not required by other changes and not in Main but makes sense to switch it also Affected Flavors Only Ubuntu Desktop and Edubuntu ships gdm3, gnome-control-center, gnome-remote-desktop. (Cinnamon 23.04 and daily 23.10 also ships gnome-control-center but this appears to be a bug since they ship cinnamon-control-center and is likely already fixed in noble-proposed) Remmina is included in Ubuntu Desktop, Cinnamon, Kylin, and Unity. gnome-connections has no reverse dependencies or recommends. Upstream Changes https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-remote-desktop/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS https://gitlab.com/Remmina/Remmina/-/blob/rel/v1.4.35/CHANGELOG.md gnome-control-center 46~beta was already in Ubuntu 24.04 LTS before Feature Freeze. It will be updated to 46.0. The relevant part here is whether we use the 46~beta version of the Remote Desktop page or the 46.0 version. https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-control-center/-/blob/46.rc/NEWS Build Logs -- I have backported GNOME Shell 46 RC and GTK4 4.13 to the Ubuntu Desktop PPA. The PPA currently has noble-proposed disabled so that it is easily possible to try this set of packages without dealing with the incomplete 32-bit time transition in noble-proposed. In addition, the PPA has the affected packages from this FFe. https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-desktop/+archive/ubuntu/ppa/+packages Testing Done --- 1. From Ubuntu 23.10 client using Remmina, I was successfully able to connect to Ubuntu 24.04 LTS host using GNOME Shell 46 RC and GNOME Remote Desktop 46 RC. Remote control worked. 2. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with Remmina 1.4.35 built with freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote control worked. 3. From Ubuntu 24.04 LTS client with GNOME Connections 46 RC built with freerdp3, I was able to connect to Ubuntu 23.10 host. Remote control worked. 4. I added a new Remote Login test case to https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DesktopTeam/TestPlans/RemoteDesktop and verified that remote login worked. Notably, enabling this changes the port for the older service, now called "Desktop Sharing" to 3390. Since 3389 is the default port, users would then need to manually specific port 3390 for Desktop Sharing in their remote connection app (Remmina, GNOME Connections, etc.). [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060898] Re: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu
wslu includes wslview which has a feature of being a "fake web browser that allows opening urls in your default browser on Windows 10". Therefore, Provides: www-browser is not a bug. https://manpages.ubuntu.com/wslview -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060898 Title: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu Status in kubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in lubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in ubuntu-budgie-meta package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in ubuntu-mate-meta package in Ubuntu: Triaged Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in wslu package in Ubuntu: Invalid Status in kubuntu-meta source package in Noble: Triaged Status in lubuntu-meta source package in Noble: Triaged Status in ubuntu-budgie-meta source package in Noble: Triaged Status in ubuntu-mate-meta source package in Noble: Triaged Status in ubuntu-meta source package in Noble: Invalid Status in wslu source package in Noble: Invalid Bug description: Filing this against ubuntu-meta since I believe this is a seed problem that potentially affects all variants of Ubuntu (flavors or otherwise). wslu is "a collection of utilities for the Windows 10 Linux Subsystem, such as for converting Linux paths to a Windows paths or creating Linux application shortcuts on the Windows 10 Desktop." Obviously this package should *never* be installed on a desktop or even on most VMs, but only within WSL instances. However... wslu provides the virtual package www-browser, as one of its features is to open links in Windows 10 using the default browser set there. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060898] Re: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu
I do not believe this is fixable in ubuntu-meta at all, unless the Flavors want Firefox to be moved to desktop-common which would prevent any flavor from choosing chromium-browser. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060898] Re: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu
Yes, Ubuntu Desktop Flavors that want to use Firefox need to install the Firefox apt package. Or if they want to use Chromium, they need to install the chromium-browser apt package. The firefox and chromium-browser apt packages should have their package descriptions updated because they are not only transitional packages but provide a few things that can't be provided by a snap. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2059335] Re: FFe: Sync file-roller 44.1-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main)
** Summary changed: - FFe: Sync file-roller 44-2 (main) from Debian unstable (main) + FFe: Sync file-roller 44.1-1 (main) from Debian unstable (main) ** Description changed: Freeze Exception Request I request to sync file-roller 44 from Debian. The largest change is that file-roller was ported from GTK3 to GTK4. However, this is also the strongest argument to doing the update: it will be significantly easier to backport bugfixes if Ubuntu 24.04 LTS is using the GTK4 version rather than by trying to port those fixes to GTK3. Although switching apps to GTK4 was problematic for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, a significant number of apps these days are GTK4 and at least all the Ubuntu desktop flavors that ship file-roller do have appropriate basic themeing for GTK4 apps. Potential Problems -- The new release drops the AppMenu option. In other words, showing a traditional File/Edit/View menu instead of a hamburger ☰ menu. Out of the desktop flavors that ship file-roller, it looks like this feature was only used in Ubuntu Unity. Notably Ubuntu Unity ships many MATE apps because of Unity's unique "global menu" feature. MATE does offer an older GTK3 file-roller fork named engrampa. If this feature is important to Ubuntu Unity, I recommend they switch to engrampa. However, Ubuntu Unity ships nemo as the default file browser. nemo recommends nemo-fileroller which Depends: file-roller. (Instead of engrampa). There is another nautilus fork named caja which Ubuntu MATE ships. Although switching apps to GTK4 was problematic for Ubuntu 22.04 LTS, a significant number of apps these days are GTK4 and at least all the Ubuntu desktop flavors that ship file-roller do have appropriate basic themeing for GTK4 apps. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060898] Re: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu
If you have Gimp installed then gimp-help-en is automatically installed by Settings > Region&language > Manage installed languages and wslu is NOT installed. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to ubuntu-meta in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060898 Title: Trying to install gimp-help-en threatens to install wslu Status in ubuntu-meta package in Ubuntu: New Status in wslu package in Ubuntu: New Status in ubuntu-meta source package in Noble: New Status in wslu source package in Noble: New Bug description: Filing this against ubuntu-meta since I believe this is a seed problem that potentially affects all variants of Ubuntu (flavors or otherwise). wslu is "a collection of utilities for the Windows 10 Linux Subsystem, such as for converting Linux paths to a Windows paths or creating Linux application shortcuts on the Windows 10 Desktop." Obviously this package should *never* be installed on a desktop or even on most VMs, but only within WSL instances. However... wslu provides the virtual package www-browser, as one of its features is to open links in Windows 10 using the default browser set there. It seems the stylesheet *is* applied before the extension is activated. But even if I add an extra wait for "custom-stylesheets-changed", that's still too early for the dock/dash to know about the new style that's already been loaded and signalled. The issue occurs when attempting to establish a mobile broadband connection. The modem enters an enable sequence but fails with an "Invalid transition" error, leading to a failure in enabling the modem and thus preventing the connection. Steps to Reproduce: Start or restart Ubuntu 24.04 on a ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12. Attempt to connect to a mobile broadband network using the default Network Manager GUI. Observe the failure in the connection process "/var/log/syslog". Expected Result: The modem successfully transitions through its enable sequence, allowing the mobile broadband connection to be established without errors. Actual Result: The modem fails to enable, logging an "Invalid transition" error. This results in the modem being stuck in a disabled state, and the connection process is halted. The specific error messages from the ModemManager log are as follows: ModemManager initiates the simple connect process, moving through states to enable the modem. The modem state changes from disabled to enabling. Shortly after, warnings of "Busy" are logged, followed by "couldn't enable interface: 'Invalid transition'" and "failed enabling modem: Invalid transition." Eventually, the modem transitions back to the disabled state, and NetworkManager logs indicate a fallback to a disconnected state due to a 'user-requested' action. System Information: Device: ThinkPad X1 Carbon Gen 12 lsb_release -rd No LSB modules are available. Description:Ubuntu Noble Numbat (development branch) Release:24.04 Solution for the community :) : After further investigation and testing, I have found a workaround that successfully resolves the issue with ModemManager not being able to enable the modem, which was preventing the establishment of mobile broadband connections. Solution Description: The solution involves two main steps: - Creating Symbolic Links for FCC Unlock Settings: This step ensures that ModemManager has the necessary permissions and configurations to manage the modem's FCC lock state. - Directly Setting the Radio State to 'On' Using mbimcli: This command directly interacts with the modem to enable its radio, bypassing the limitations encountered with the Network Manager command-line interface (CLI) or graphical user interface (GUI). Steps to Apply the Solution: Create symbolic links for FCC unlock settings by running the following command in the terminal: bash sudo ln -sft /etc/ModemManager/fcc-unlock.d /usr/share/ModemManager/fcc- unlock.available.d/* Enable the modem's radio state to 'on' using mbimcli by executing: bash sudo mbimcli -p -d /dev/wwan0mbim0 --quectel-set-radio-state=on Note: These actions were not achievable through the Network Manager CLI interface or its GUI, indicating a limitation in the existing tools for managing specific modem states and configurations. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2060915] [NEW] Comments in source files flood "other software"
Public bug reported: Reproduction case: Add the attached source file to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. You don't need to 'apt update' for this test. Open software-properties-gtk. Issue: All the comments at the top of the file are displayed, flooding the interface. Limiting the number of comment lines displayed and only displaying the full comments in a tool tip (GTK.Tree has a couple of set_tooltip functions) may result in a better user interface. ** Affects: software-properties (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Attachment added: "foo-bar.sources" https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060915/+attachment/5763609/+files/foo-bar.sources ** Merge proposal linked: https://code.launchpad.net/~nteodosio/software-properties/+git/software-properties/+merge/463886 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to software-properties in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2060915 Title: Comments in source files flood "other software" Status in software-properties package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Reproduction case: Add the attached source file to /etc/apt/sources.list.d/. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 2037015] Re: Screen corruption of slides during install on Raspberry Pi
** Changed in: webkit2gtk (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => In Progress ** Changed in: webkit2gtk (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided => Medium ** Changed in: webkit2gtk (Ubuntu) Milestone: None => ubuntu-24.04 -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to mesa in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/2037015 Title: Screen corruption of slides during install on Raspberry Pi Status in mesa package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in ubiquity package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in webkit2gtk package in Ubuntu: In Progress Bug description: During the initial configuration of the Ubuntu Desktop for Raspberry Pi (the oem-config process, derived from ubiquity), on the Mantic beta images, after the various pages of information have been filled out and the process moves onto configuration, the "slide deck" that is usually displayed during the process appeared corrupted as if a horizontal stride were incorrectly set somewhere. I'm attached a photo of the screen (as, while I could take a screenshot during the process, it evidently wasn't saved somewhere persistent). I originally thought this might be a regression of LP: #1924251 as the corruption in the window looks very similar (incorrect horizontal stride causing "banding"), but I tested the embedded browser (via the help system) after completing setup and it worked perfectly so that's *probably* unrelated.
