[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1635872] [NEW] xorg freezes for long time after using virtual terminal

2016-10-22 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu: 16.04
xorg 1:7.7+13ubuntu3

Always reproducible, steps:
a) start computer
b) verify that Xorg is using some 0.7% CPU
c) f1+ctrl+shift #go to virtual terminal
d) f7+ctrl #back to the xorg

Maybe 60 seconds mouse cursor can be barely moved, but keyboard and clicks are
not responding after all. After that run script for monitoring CPU usage of
Xorg.
e)
while [ 1 ] ; do top -b -n 1 | grep Xorg | awk {'print $9'} ; sleep 1; done

CPU usage is almost 100% for 12...71 minutes and then calms down.

Not sure if this relates display controllers (lspci | grep VGA):
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor
Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GK107M [GeForce GT 650M
Mac Edition] (rev a1)

Or drivers (lsmod | grep video):
video 40960 3 i915,nouveau,apple_gmux

** Affects: xorg (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1471123] Re: suddenly tabulator-key stops working normally

2016-10-21 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
After fresh install on Ubuntu 16.04 I found this will break tab key instantly:
xmodmap -e 'clear Mod4'

My goal was to remap Super_L to be additional Alt_L (and not affect tab key at
all):

This works for me on Ubuntu 16.04 (with xfce):
xmodmap -e 'remove mod4 = Super_L'
xmodmap -e 'remove mod4 = Hyper_L'
xmodmap -e 'keycode 133 = Alt_L'
xmodmap -e 'add mod4 = Super_L Hyper_L'

I don't know how to trigger this bug, but I have seen it now more than

"Suddenly" = I can't figure pattern how this triggers. Sometimes it
  happens when computer just idles

'stops working normally' = tab-key alone doesn't do anything.

Running xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap will not fix.

  Attaching new usb-keyboard doesn't help.
  ---
  Reboot helps.
  Restarting xorg helps.

Changing to virtual terminal -> tab is working. But after returning to xorg,
tab is still broken.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1576977] Re: Lots of GEGL-gegl-operation.c-WARNING on starting gimp

2016-09-04 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
I tested with upstream source of gimp-2.8.18.tar.bz2
[https://download.gimp.org/mirror/pub/gimp/v2.8/].
It is specifically compiled against gegl-0.2.

Ubuntu 16.04 has gegl-0.3 (and not gegl-0.2). Debian and Ubuntu both use
bump_Babl-GEGL_versions.patch:
-PKG_CHECK_MODULES(GEGL, gegl-0.2 >= gegl_required_version)
+PKG_CHECK_MODULES(GEGL, gegl-0.3 >= gegl_required_version)

I made this modification and compiled upstream gimp-2.8.18.tar.bz2. And
encountered same startup warnings.

---
I installed gegl-0.2 (runtime+devel) from Ubuntu-14.04 (It needs also these old
packages: libopenexr6 libilmbase6 libumfpack5.6.2 libamd2.3.1 libcholmod2.1.2
libcamd2.3.1 libccolamd2.8.0 libcolamd2.8.0). Then I compiled Ubuntu-16.04's
version of gimp, gimp-2.8.16-1ubuntu1 against gegl-0.2 (dropping gegl-part of
bump_Babl-GEGL_versions.patch and tuning debian/control).

Now this gimp does NOT have these warnings. So the base reason for these
gegl-warnings seems to be too new gegl. (Or some of those other
dependency libraries).

---

bump_Babl-GEGL_versions.patch seems to relate this debian bugreport:
https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=790421 (migrating from
gegl-0.2 to gegl-0.3).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1073669] Re: Bluetooth won't stay disabled after reboot due to early upstart job

2016-02-18 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
Happens with 16.04.
Goal: start ubuntu without bluetooth

a)
 /etc/bluetooth/main.conf
+InitiallyPowered = false
Didn't work.

b)
rfkill-restore.conf from this ticket
Didn't work.

c)
/etc/rc.local
+rfkill block bluetooth
Didn't work.

Finally disabled bluetooth from BIOS.

Title:
Bluetooth won't stay disabled after reboot due to early upstart job

Status in rfkill package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using a Dell XPS 13 with Ubuntu 12.04.

In order to restore RF interfaces to their previous state between
boots, rfkill is run via two Upstart jobs in /etc/init/: rfkill-
store.conf (run while shutting down) and rfkill-restore.conf (run when
starting up). However, while rfkill-restore.conf starts on the Upstart
local-filesystems signal, there is a high probability that the RF kill
switches in /sys/class/rfkill/ still won't yet be populated (i.e.
every time on the Dell XPS 13). This results in behavior like the
  following:

  1. Disable bluetooth via applet.
  2. Reboot.
  3. Login.
  4. Observe bluetooth is re-enabled!

Bluetooth should have stayed disabled, but since the kill switches
weren't present when rfkill-restore was run, the kill switch states
  were not restored.

  happens when computer just idles

'stops working normally' = tab-key alone doesn't do anything.

And behaviour is like xev reports: tab pressed alone doesn't do anything, but
with any modifier it works as expected:
  alt+tab = change window
shift+tab = previous element (e.g. fields in browser)
  ctrl+tab = change tab (e.g. in firefox)

  -
I have ~/.Xmodmap and it contains line:
  keycode 23 = Tab ISO_Left_Tab Tab ISO_Left_Tab Tab ISO_Left_Tab

Running xmodmap ~/.Xmodmap will not fix.

  ---
  Attaching new usb-keyboard doesn't help.
  ---
  Reboot helps.
  Restarting xorg helps.
  ---
Changing to virtual terminal -> tab is working. But after returning to xorg,
tab is still broken.

  Reboot helps.
  Restarting xorg helps.

Changing to virtual terminal -> tab is working. But after returning to xorg,
tab is still broken.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1313275] Re: relogin fails with black screen, Xorg high load

2014-07-01 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
This happens me too.

Always reproducible, steps:
a) start computer
b) verify that Xorg is using some 0.7% CPU
c) lock the screen
d) login back
- Xorg uses 97 ... 105% CPU
Wait over ten minutes and it will not cool down.
('sudo killall Xorg' helps)

-
Step c) could be suspend/hibernate too, because they implies screen locking.
-
Also changing to the tty (i.e. ctrl-alt-f1) triggers xorg to use ~100% CPU.

Virtualbox mentioned earlier: I have virtualbox installed, but not running
('lsmod | grep vbox' gives hits).

relogin fails with black screen, Xorg high load

Status in “xorg” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Using a desktop with two users, it often hangs switching from one to
another. The console comes unresponsive, even text-only (ctrl-alt-f2)
does not show. System itself still runs, I can login over SSH. Process

The system came up from hybernate, the graphical display showed
password entry for other user, the switch towared the one user showed
the password entry for the one user. After entering the password the
display turns black, with ctrl-alt-f2 not responding either.

  Binary package hint: notification-daemon

After today's upgrade, I don't have anymore notifications when
changing audio volume on my IBM Thinkpad X31. It was working until
yesterday (Jaunty). This issue also affects all other hardware buttons
such as volume mute, LCD brightness, bluetooth/wifi radio switch.

  Steps to reproduce:
  - Change audio volume using the hardware buttons
  - Audio volume changes as expected but no notification appears

  - Mute audio using hardware button
  - Audio muted as expected but no notification appears

  - Change LCD brightness using function keys (Fn+Home, Fn+End on T42)
  - LCD brightness changes as expected but no notification appears

Another note:
When screen is corrupted and then computer is hibernated with pm-hibernate

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1037085] Re: 'disable-touchpad'-hardware-key is not enabling touchpad again

2013-07-14 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
I found another way to disable/enable touchpad from commandline:
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchpad touchpad-enabled
false
gsettings set org.gnome.settings-daemon.peripherals.touchpad touchpad-enabled
true
This is working. But after touchpad breaks with hardware-button this will not
bring it back.

*
After playing with gnome-settings-daemon (gsd):

gsd-media-keys-manager is handling three different touchpadkey-events:
{ TOUCHPAD_KEY, NULL, XF86TouchpadToggle },
{ TOUCHPAD_ON_KEY, NULL, XF86TouchpadOn },
{ TOUCHPAD_OFF_KEY, NULL, XF86TouchpadOff },
Where first (TOUCHPAD_KEY) is only which is really doing something about
settings, two latters are only about showing info on screen. And this laptop is
only sending these ON/OFF events.

I then commented out everything relating touchpad - Bug still triggers:
Hardware-button disables touchpad, but doesn't enable it back (this time there
are no visual icon on screen).
*

What another process/application is handling media keys? (acpi_listen is
not showing it)

2013-07-14 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
And one more way to disable+enable touchpad:
xinput list | grep TouchPad
 - id=11

xinput set-prop 11 Device Enabled 0
xinput set-prop 11 Device Enabled 1

And for checking current status: xinput list-props 11 | grep Enabled

But this is not the way what hardware-button is using, and is not
helping when touchpad breaks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 995401] Re: Ubuntu 12.04: keyboard layout does not change languages

2012-05-14 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
I'm also affected. System had only one keyboard layout (fi). Hardware
keyboard is fi. After upgrading to the 12.04, layout is english, but
every configs (and /etc/default/keyboard) claims it is fi (and doesn't
even show english layout) . Tty1-6 works as fi-layout.

Workaround for current session works: setxkbmap fi
(setxkbmap doesn't need sudo)

Title:
Ubuntu 12.04: keyboard layout does not change languages

Status in “gnome-control-center” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Probably this problem is reported but the ubuntu-bug system cannot
  trace it.

I have upgraded to 12.04 from 11.10 which was a clean install. My
keyboard language-settings (in the login screen as well) were
norwegian and greek. However when I installed the 12.04 version my
keyboard-layout was changed to english but the keyboard layout manager
  was showing norwegian.

On the keyboard-layout settings I put the english(US) layout and I
removed greek and norwegian. Typed a bit and then put norwegian and
greek and I removed the english (US) again and chose the Alt-Shift
combination for changing layouts. What I get is an unchangable
  english(US) layout.

Important note: My keyboard is US-keyboard. I mean the hardware.

P.S. The ubuntu-bug system has a serious bug. When I was looking about
the bug on Google I could find the launchpad relevant subject. I
wanted to use the ubuntu-bug system in order to report my system's
details. Then I could not find the subject again through the launchpad
search engine and I was forced to report it as a new problem

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 863154] Re: Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions

2011-12-12 Thread Aapo Rantalainen
Grumbels PPA adds something more than only this patch, and it caused
warning for every startup, so I decided to open my own PPA.

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:aapo-rantalainen/gimp26-noghostline
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install gimp

It contains gimp from Ubuntu 11.10 and patch from post80, nothing more.
Truly speaking I do not understand why this patch fixes it, but gimp
seems to work now.

Title:
Wacom Bamboo One tablet random coordinate malfunctions

Status in The GNU Image Manipulation Program (GIMP):
  New
Status in “gimp” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The tablet in overall seems to work correctly, with all pressure-
features working. But quite frequently, while drawing, GIMP seems to
wrongly read the coordinates of the stylus (as zeros, or negative
values?), resulting in frequent, random 'line-peaks' in the direction
of the left and upper image edges. With this bug it is hard to even
use the tablet, since these problems are very frequent (see the
  exemplary image attached).

The tablet works with no problems in MyPaint. The bug is reproducible
  in both Unity-2d and Unity-3d.

I also notice the CPU usage increasing dramatically during drawing
  with any brush.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Connect the Wacom Bamboo One tablet
  2. Open GIMP
  3. Start drawing longer strokes with any brush

  Expected result:
The brush stroke as intended by moving the stylus

  Actual result:
The brush stroke as intended with frequent, random line-strokes towards image
edges

System: Ubuntu 11.10 oneiric (development branch)
GIMP version: 2.6.11 (package version: 2.6.11-2ubuntu3)
