[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2013-03-21 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Trevor Saunders (:tbsaunde) from comment #40)

I think the only thing we try to fix here is the infinite recurssion.

  and code madnness :)

why? the reason for the bug was crashes with a change to atk, so just fixing
the way we interact with atk should be fine.

the crash was fixed on atk side, we need to make our side robust.

consumer might need name change event when it asks for the name.

what if there is more than one consumer, then it may be arguably less bad
for other consumers to get the event late rather than never.

it's intermittent failures, it's not the way the software is supposed to
work

I think the way it works is that consumer processes have a local
repreentation of atkobject in their process which keeps the name and atk
updates the name based on name change event. So each consumer can choose
for itself to use or not use cache as it likes, and might well want to not
use the cache because it can easily become out of date due to us not always
 firing name change events.

in any case I'm not really willing to remove the madness we have now atleast
until we talk to atk people about it, and I don't see a reason to make vd
 block on that.

see comment #7:

after irc chat with Alejandro it seems we don't need to call
atk_object_set_name at all. We override atkobject-get_name so we are
guaranteed that we always deliver correct accessible name, in other
words it doesn't make sense to call atk_object_set_name to change
atkobject-accessible-name.

If you are really sure than some cache exists that we must update then
could you please run a testcase with orca or check it with Alejandro?

 +static void

so, both of the times this is called we have to check if we actually want to
 fire an event first.

we don't want an event in the former case

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2013-03-20 Thread Alexander Surkov
atk_object_set_name() called inside get_name is a wrong thing we try to
remove here. It made us fire name change events which is ridiculous I
think. If I get right then ATK implementation internals don't need that
event as long as we override get_name. On the another hand I don't
understand why the consumer might need name change event when it asks
for the name.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2013-03-20 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Trevor Saunders (:tbsaunde) from comment #38)
(In reply to alexander :surkov from comment #37)
atk_object_set_name() called inside get_name is a wrong thing we try to

I think the only thing we try to fix here is the infinite recurssion.

and code madnness :)

remove here. It made us fire name change events which is ridiculous I think.
If I get right then ATK implementation internals don't need that event as
long as we override get_name. On the another hand I don't understand why the
consumer might need name change event when it asks for the name.

I absolutely agree what we do is crazy, but I know there is caching involved
and I'm atleast somewhat concerned not fireing an event in getName() could
break that even more than it is now.

what kind of caching? And how does this caching is supposed to work if
somebody asks us to calculate the name (bypassing that cache)? Or
alternatively who uses that cache and why all consumers don't want to
use it?

If your offering to fix name change
events so they're fired whenever a name changes and never when it doesn't
then of course I'm happy to remove this madness.

iirc AT needs this event every time when name is changed. In this sense
our name change event might never work for this purpose.

2013-02-13 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to David Bolter [:davidb] from comment #88)
I heard from Alex and we can work out the a11y fix/followup separately. Note
 uplift is Tuesday...

We can't ship Firefox breaking hardly the accessibility of HTML
controls. So the fix must be at least on Beta. Having broken HTML file
input on nightly and aurora is a bad thing too since we likely loose
testers using nighties as daily browser (I think Marco is one of them).
But probably that's acceptable if it doesn't take too long.

If uplifting is Thuesday then we likely get inaccessible nightly and
aurora both for uncertain period because we still don't have working
a11y solution. I would land this patch after uplifting.

In the meantime I'll try to get a11y patch on top of Mounir's patch.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 209509]

2013-02-11 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to James Teh [:Jamie] from comment #77)
(In reply to alexander :surkov from comment #73)
Jamie, I think we need your help. Can you take a look please at try build:
and say how we should expose the input@type=file to AT to make it working
  with NVDA?
The problem is that XUL labels expose the IAccessibleText interface, but the
text is empty (IAccessibleText::nCharacters returns 0). If the label text is
exposed via IAccessibleText, it should work correctly.

If we would expose IAccessibleText correctly then would it fix a
problem?

Mounir, I assume you use @value attribute on that xul:label. Is it
possible to switch to text node instead?

 Alternatively, you
can stop exposing IAccessibleText for these labels altogether, but we'd need
to discuss this, as NVDA currently won't fall back to accName for labels.

I'd be great if we end up here having an optimal solution for user
experience.

2013-02-11 Thread Alexander Surkov

(In reply to alexander surkov from comment #78)
Mounir, I assume you use @value attribute on that xul:label. Is it possible
to switch to text node instead?
He can't *switch* to text node because he requires the crop behaviour, but I
believe the value attribute takes priority over the text node so that if he
provides both then it will show cropped text but obviously I don't know
whether the accessibility code will see the text node.

Do you mean
xul:label value=file:///c:/path-to-filefile:///c:/path-to-file/xul:label
?

but then if @value takes precedence and it gets cropped then it'd be
great if text node would be the same as representation of @value
attribute. That doesn't happen I assume.

So crop doesn't give desired effect on
xul:labelfile:///c:/path-to-file/xul:label
or
xul:descriptionfile:///c:/path-to-file/xul:description

 (Is it possible to
query the accessible tree in DOM Inspector to find out?)

sure, just switch to Accessible Tree viewer in left panel and inspect
the accessible tree.

BTW, do we have to expose the anonymous nodes to the accessible document?

it depends, we expose them when we need them

 It
seems that regarding a11y, it would be as good to simply have one element
that has some value and can be open (popup state?). I don't know much about
a11y so I might be missing some reasons why we expose those anonymous nodes.

the idea is to keep a11y closer to the UI, what the user sees on the
screen he hears the same by screen reader. It doesn't necessary
contradicts to what you said though. I'm certain we need to have that
'Browse' button, mapping of all other controls can vary I guess.

 Comment on attachment 710783
 Patch

This patch removes the read-only input that holds the path and name of the
chosen file. In a regular nightly build, this is accessible to both JAWS and
NVDA. In the try build, using the first testcase above, or any other file
input, the path and file name are no longer accessible. All that remains
after choosing a file is the Browse... button, as if no file had been
 chosen yet. Denying feedback.

the fix will be rather on a11y side but I agree this shouldn't go until
we have accessibility solution for this.

Jamie, I think we need your help. Can you take a look please at try build:
https://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/try-builds/mlamo...@mozilla.com-b61257dc2541/
and say how we should expose the input@type=file to AT to make it working
with NVDA?

It should be as easy editable as in firefox 2.

  I use Hardy amd64.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2012-04-05 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to JeffreyDecker from comment #24)
I would like to take on this bug if that's alright.

done, thank you btw.

 Just reading through the
comments though it looks like it's a little unclear as to how we want to
 refactor to fix the bug.

I think go with solution from comment #21.

Has there been any decision made?

Ginn, Trevor, does comment #21 approach sounds acceptable for you?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2012-03-16 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Ginn Chen from comment #20)

We need to copy the string to gchar* anyway.

yep, just copy the string every time when we were asked. Doesn't sound good?

 Actually it's not possible.
atk_object_get_name() returns const gchar*, caller will not free the return
 value.
We have to keep it somewhere in AtkObject, otherwise we leak.

I see

So if provide getName/setName implementation that will use
accessible-name to store a value then would it be acceptable solution?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 948788]

2012-03-16 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Trevor Saunders (:tbsaunde) from comment #22)

or we could do what we do for a bunch of other atk methods reutrning const
gchar* nd use nsAccessibleWrap::ReturnString() which keeps a static
nsCString and returns a pointer into its buffer, and so requires caller of
atk method to copy returned string before calling another atk function,
which I think its very likely the bridge will always do.

I think I would try to avoid assumptions like this. Ginn?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 857153]

2012-01-19 Thread Alexander Surkov
(In reply to Karl Tomlinson (:karlt) from comment #57)
Supporting the new methods for detecting settings is by definition new and
therefore not thoroughly tested. It seems reasonable to put this through
the same QA process as any new feature.

It's not a feature that's serious regression. the patch is on trunk for
a while and there's no any known regression. I suggest to ask for aurora
approval.

On a related note, will this fix also address the issue of the File input
not exposing the aria-label and aria-required attributes that are set on the

No, could you please file new bug?

Mounir, would you willing to take a look at this one? I think the approach
everybody feels ok is to follow safari's way (it works both for sighted and
  blind users).

By that you mean removing the text field and have only a simple text?

right

The committed fix will be awailable in Firefox 3.6 for example with
 Lucid release future?

No, it'll be available for Firefox 10. It's tricky to port it on earlier
releases because it's based on number of other fixes which are likely
not going be ported too.

We have a working, tested patch, but more investigation is going into
enhancing the new regression test case. This patch isn't in Firefox
3.6, or 3.7. However, this patch is critical for blind users who use
Ubuntu with Orca. Without this patch, Firefox is basically unusable.
If this patch could be included for Ubuntu Maverick, that would be
great news for blind Ubuntu users.

Not sure what you're asking me to review but the call to MoveFocus looks ok.

The FLAG_BYMOVEFOCUS won't flag actually do anything here.

Yes, for flags. I removed frameSelection-ScrollSelectionIntoView call.
Do I understand right that MoveFocus will do that?
