[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1441592] [NEW] Unity restart broken (Vivid)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1411620] [NEW] Unity requires restart after enabling always-show-menus or LIM

I was able to switch the Nvidia card off manually, by using these
commands which were present in the old prime-switch script (from nvidia-
prime pre 0.6):

/sbin/initctl emit nvidia-off
/sbin/rmmod nvidia
echo OFF | sudo tee /proc/acpi/bbswitch

$ cat /proc/acpi/bbswitch

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289298] Re: bbswitch stopped working with the latest ubuntu-drivers-common / nvidia-prime

2014-03-07 Thread Alin Andrei
Both are installed, my laptop overheats like crazy because bbswitch
doesn't work. After spending an entire day I managed to get it to work
using older packages.

This is not invalid, I didn't spend a day fixing something that doesn't
exist :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1289298] Re: bbswitch stopped working with the latest ubuntu-drivers-common / nvidia-prime

2014-03-07 Thread Alin Andrei
I currently have bbswitch installed from the Bumblebee PPA but the
result is the same with the version from the Ubuntu repositories (that's
what I was using when I submitted the bug). I'll install the version
from the Ubuntu repositories if you want and repost the logs.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1281113] [NEW] Should depend on unity-settings-daemon only

2014-02-17 Thread Alin Andrei
Public bug reported:

Currently Unity Control Center depends on unity-settings-daemon OR
gnome-settings-daemon but due to recent changes in Unity / Compiz,
gnome-settings-daemon no longer works properly with Unity and I get a
broken theme with gnome-settings-daemon. Screenshot:

Here are reports from users being hit by this bug:
http://www.webupd8.org/2014/02/ubuntu-1404-unity-gets-new-gtk3-css.html
(see the comments)

Unity-Control-Center should now depend on unity-settings-daemon only.

** Affects: unity-control-center (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: Confirmed

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1281113] Re: Should depend on unity-settings-daemon only

I see an update for Unity is on the way that will allow gnome-settings-
daemon to work under Unity, so never mind, I'll mark this as invalid.

Bug description:
  [Impact]

   * Failure to complete installation.

  [Test Case]

   * At times, apt cache can run out of file descriptors as seen in this bug
and its duplicates.
   * There is no clear-cut way to reproduce it in ubiquity, but there is a
significant amount of crash reports submit, which dropped off after the
proposed fix has been applied.

  [Regression Potential]

   * The proposed fix has been well tested in trusty both automated
manual testing and does not regress on any configuration.

  [Other Info]

This error occurs each time I try to install a .deb file with Gdebi in
Ubuntu 12.10, after the deb installation finishes.

Bug description:
I updated by raring installation and found that the power indicator
now shows my wireless keyboard and mouse as (missing) and with
extremely low power. Both the keyboard and mouse work (I'm using them
to type this bug) and the low battery light on the respective devices
do not show low power. Even switching to brand new batteries don't
  make the indicator change state.

I've attached a screenshot of the indicator and a screen shot of the
power setting dialog which seems to be in conflict with the indicator.

I've reproduced this behavior with the 3.8.0-0-generic
  vmlinuz-3.8.0-1-generic kernels.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1103064] Re: power indicator shows Logitech wireless keyboard and mouse batteries with 0%

2013-03-18 Thread Alin Andrei
After a recent update, the mouse no longer shows up in the power
indicator / power statistics, but now the mouse stops working every few
seconds for a second or so which is very annoying. Anyone else
experiencing this issue? I've checked the batteries, etc., that's not it
- further more, this doesn't occur when my laptop isn't running on
battery.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1081691] Re: Launcher - Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software Updater

2013-03-07 Thread Alin Andrei
Mm after the Humanity icon theme update from a few minutes ago, the
Software Updater icon did change, but the Nautilus icon didn't. The only
way to get the new Nautilus icon is to switch to the Humanity icon
theme, but it doesn't work with Ubuntu-mono icon theme for some reason.

Update the icons used for the Software Centre, Nautilus, and Software
Updater to the new icons supplied in the attached file
  Nautilus_USC_Updater_new_icons.zip.

When any of these three applications are running, the Launcher tiles they are
mounted on should be illuminated in the following colours:
  Nautilus: #af4853
  Software center: #ffbf87
  Software updater: #4c9e39

(Note this functionality was added to the Launcher in Unity 6.0 as a
  result of bug #962120)

So, packages shipping Nautilus, Software Center and Software updater
should define in their .desktop file the proper X-Unity-
IconBackgroundColor field with the mentioned colors.

This change is part of a larger set of Launcher icon changes, see
attached image preview-new-launcher-icons.png for how the launcher
will appear when the full set of changes are made.

The other bugs that are part of this same change request are:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1110498] Re: [raring] GNOME System Monitor leaks memory

2013-02-22 Thread Alin Andrei
Unfortunately it's not fixed. I've left it running for the night and
this morning it was using more than 1GB of RAM:
http://i.imgur.com/vRng63A.png

I'm using the latest version 3.7.90-0ubuntu1

Also, I've noticed the GNOME System Monitor memory usage increasing
rapidly when upgrading a lot of packages using Synaptic Package Manager,
maybe someone could check that out...? I'll try to reproduce it when I
have lots of updates...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1131754] [NEW] [raring] Totem is missing the GNOME AppMenu functions: Open, Preferences, etc.

2013-02-22 Thread Alin Andrei

System Monitor was using ~15MB of RAM, then after I've used Synaptic to
upgrade about 15 packages, the GNOME System Monitor memory usage has
jumped to 124 MB.

No response? It's pretty serious...

I'm attaching a valrgind log, but please note that I've only let GNOME
System Monitor run for a few minutes because it kept my CPU close to
100% and the CPU temperature was getting close to 100C.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1110420] [NEW] [raring] Mouse disgcharged notifications, Power Indicator are wrong

2013-01-30 Thread Alin Andrei
Public bug reported:

I keep getting mouse is discharged notifications (or something like
that, I can't remember the exact text) when I log in to my Ubuntu 13.04
Raring laptop, but that's not true, my mouse is charged. Also, in the
Power Indicator, it says Mouse (not present) but the mouse is there,
and it even shows up in the Power Statistics dialog, here's a

Bug description:
I keep getting mouse is discharged notifications (or something like
that, I can't remember the exact text) when I log in to my Ubuntu
13.04 Raring laptop, but that's not true, my mouse is charged. Also,
in the Power Indicator, it says Mouse (not present) but the mouse is
there, and it even shows up in the Power Statistics dialog, here's a
  screenshot: http://i.imgur.com/f2lbcz8.png

And while we're at it, the mouse entry in the Power Indicator is
missing the icon (see the same screenshot above).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default on dual monitor setup

2013-01-26 Thread Alin Andrei
Update: after the last xserver-xorg-video-intel update
(2.20.19-0ubuntu3) both Steam and Totem work and even mplayer with vaapi
(and now the subtitle shadow displays properly too) - all with dual
monitors and SNA enabled ('m still using the Kernel installed via
http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/drm-intel-
nightly/2013-01-24-raring/ though) . So I'll mark this as fixed.

Thank you!

Mmm I remember that bug even in Quantal without SNA so I don't think
it's the same but once you'll fix it I'll try to reproduce both and will
let you know. Thanks!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default on dual monitor setup

2013-01-24 Thread Alin Andrei
At first I though it was fixed, but only for ~30 seconds. Then the soft
freeze happened again. I've tried all combinations and here's what I
got:

Dual monitor + SNA: mplayer in full-screen still gets the system to freeze, but
now it happens after about 30 seconds after playing the video.

Single monitor + SNA: full-screen videos are ok.

Dual monitor + UXA: full screen videos are ok.

Both dual and single screen, both SNA and UXA:
- mplayer with vaapi support no longer works, the video is not displayed anymore
- Totem doesn't play videos anymore, no video is displayed (blank screen, just
like for mplayer with vaapi)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default on dual monitor setup

2013-01-24 Thread Alin Andrei
Yes, full screen mplayer videos work with SNA enabled and two monitors
using this kernel! Totem still can't display videos but maybe that's a
different issue? Any idea? Also, mplayer with vaapi doesn't work any
more but since vaapi is not officially supported for mplayer, I guess
you won't care about that...

Title:
[raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default
  on dual monitor setup

Status in “xserver-xorg-video-intel” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
My system freezes (sometimes completely, sometimes I am able to
recover by restarting LightDM) when playing a video using mplayer in
full screen (in either Gnome Mplayer, Smplayer, etc.), after the
recent Intel SNA by default change. This also crashes when using full
screen Skype video calls and full screen HTML5 YouTube videos.

Changing AccelMethod to uxa in xorg.conf fixes this and full
screen videos work without any issues. So this is definetly an SNA
bug! Also, the crashes only occur when I'm using 2 monitors. It
doesn't happen when I'm using only one display!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default on dual monitor setup

2013-01-24 Thread Alin Andrei
Mmm however, regarding Totem, I see it hasn't been updated in Raring
since December (and Gstreamer 1.0 since 9th of January and it was
working just a couple of days ago so that's not it either) so I think
the xserver-xorg-video-intel upgrade had something to do with it. Videos
don't work in Totem no matter what (with or without SNA, with 1 or 2
monitors) - should I open a new bug for xserver-xorg-video-intel?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default on dual monitor setup

2013-01-24 Thread Alin Andrei
It could be something on my system but I didn't do anything related to
Gstreamer... And by the way, Opera with hardware acceleration (enabled
in the Opera settings) now looks like a ghost window (repainting
whatever it was behind it) and it's unusable. I think these two are
related and both are related to the Intel driver update... Maybe you can
try this and see if Opera works correctly for you?

To enable hardware accel for opera: type about:config and:
Find Enable Hardware Acceleration and set value to 1
Find Enable WebGL and set value to 1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default

2013-01-23 Thread Alin Andrei
Update: I've added AccelMethod to uxa in xorg.conf and the bug is
gone, full screen videos work without any issues. So this is definetly
an SNA bug!

** Description changed:

My system freezes (sometimes completely, sometimes I am able to recover
by restarting LightDM) when playing a video using mplayer in full screen
(in either Gnome Mplayer, Smplayer, etc.), after the recent Intel SNA by
- default change. Note that I'm using mplayer with hardware acceleration
- enabled (with va-api for Intel graphics).
+ default change. This also crashes when using full screen Skype video
+ calls and full screen HTML5 YouTube videos.

- Edit: it also crashes with the regular mplayer and no va-api.
+ Changing AccelMethod to uxa in xorg.conf fixes this and full screen
+ videos work without any issues. So this is definetly an SNA bug!

2013-01-23 Thread Alin Andrei
I've found out what was causing this. The crashes (only when SNA is
turned on) happen only when using 2 monitors. When using a single
monitor and playing a video in full-screen with SNA enabled, the system
doesn't crash! I'll update the description.

** Summary changed:

I've played a video which caused x to crash I think because as soon as
I've started playing the video, the LightDM login screen showed up, and
I'm attaching the i915_error_state file after logging back in following
that crash.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default

2013-01-22 Thread Alin Andrei
Any video does this. Also, full-screen skype calls freeze the computer
as well. The same for youtube videos played in HTML5. I don't know how
to get the i915_error_stat if the system is frozen...

As for the mplayer configuration, now I'm using only defaults in
Smplayer or GNOME Mplayer and it still freezes (xv video output). So
to replicate it, all I have to do is start playing a video with a
mplayer-based video player in full-screen, that's all.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1102654] Re: [raring] full screen video crashes after Intel SNA enabled by default

2013-01-21 Thread Alin Andrei
** Description changed:

My system freezes (sometimes completely, sometimes I am able to recover
by restarting LightDM) when playing a video using mplayer in full screen
(in either Gnome Mplayer, Smplayer, etc.), after the recent Intel SNA by
default change. Note that I'm using mplayer with hardware acceleration
enabled (with va-api for Intel graphics).
+
+ Edit: it also crashes with the regular mplayer and no va-api.

My system is a Dell XPS 17 L702X using the following graphics: NVIDIA
GeForce GT 555M 3GB with Optimus technology and Intel(R) Sandybridge
Mobile - 2nd Generation Core Processor Family Integrated Graphics
Controller, running Ubuntu 13.04 Raring Ringtail 64bit.
