[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1016012] Re: Backup (Déjà Dup) needs to run with root permissions in Precise

2015-02-17 Thread Bachi
Well if Deja Dup is Ubuntu's general / packaged backup solution and it
can not backup system files, then Ubuntu is by default not able to to
proper system backups, only user data backups. Which is a really big
limitation.

I would strongly recommend to add the ability to backup vital system
folders like /etc or /var (or those files in the user's home that are
owned by root). Without, Ubuntu users are way behind other OS'
capabilities in terms of system backups (of course one can solve this by
a manually set up backup - but what's then the point in having a bundled
backup solution?)

As for security, you could make backing up root files an option, which
requires an encryption password to be set.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-02-15 Thread Bachi
I would love to have a word with the developer of this feature and I wonder how
this went through QA. It's so obviously broken that it looks like the feature
was never tested. And I also wonder what takes so long to just remove the
unwanted feature.
(sorry, but such silly things are annoying - and would be easy to circumvent
with the proper QA process)

certainly over feature enhancements as it ruins the experience.

This is rather annoying for users of high DPI screens.

GNOME and KDE (used?) to set 96 DPI by default in their settings. We
should check whether they still do, and if so let them handle this; I
don't think X should be handling this.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1071345] Re: empathy contacts list compact mode is missing in 3.6

2013-05-07 Thread Bachi
This bug (and it really cannot be called a feature) is still present in
13.4 and makes Empathy rather useless (I see 9 contacts where Pidgin
would show 17 in the same space).

Side note: This becomes even more urgent since the alternative Pidgin
suffers from another Ubuntu change (dropping of the notification
whitelist), which makes it impossible to show notifications on new
messages properly.

  contacts simultaneously.

Under Empathy 3.6 on quantal, the option for a compact mode

@Jerry, this is hardly the same bug as in 2009. But I confirm it does

I'm running the Jaunty beta, and I cannot get the libnotify plugin to
show a notification when a new conversation has started.

Once the conversation is underway, I get the notifications coming up,
but they don't show for the first new message in a conversation. In
that case, I just get a window popping up showing the conversation
(when I would really prefer the notification without a new window).

The libnotify popup (version 0.14) configuration window has 'New
Messages', 'Ignore events from blocked users', and 'Buddy signs on'
ticked, but the rest are unticked.

The new jaunty notification popups are working for showing when a
buddy signs on (as well as wifi sign-on/volume changes/etc) so it is
not the notification that is broken.

I have confirmed that this happens for me on a live CD installation,
so it doesn't appear to be left-over crud from before the beta
upgrade. However, I never did manage to get the libnotify plugin to
work properly in previous versions either, but I got motivated due to
  the new jaunty notification system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1049598] Re: Cannot change avatar size in contact list

2013-05-06 Thread Bachi
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 1071345 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1071345

This ugly contact list that cannot be modified / styled is one of the
major reasons people still switch to Pidgin etc. Why not giving users a
choice of the avatar size (row size)? It's so simple and makes a huge
difference when you have lots of contacts and want your IM client to be
a non-intrusive work tool.
