[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1386803] Re: [TOPBLOCKER] unity8 crashing a lot since image #126

2014-10-29 Thread Brendan Donegan
I've just been testing silo 13 - it makes the crashes go away but after
enabling flight mode I can't disable it. The fix might need a bit of
tweaking.

Bug description:
  [SRU Justification]

Impact: The internal speaker does not show up in the sound settings,
which causes this to block certification.

Test case: With the affected machines, open sound settings without
headphones plugged in. If the Internal Speaker does not show up, the
  bug is present.

Regression risk (Quantal): Cirrus is a rare codec, mostly used in
macbooks. Upstream has reviewed and blessed the patch.

Regression risk (Precise): These machines are quirked individually and
won't affect other machines (and even if they did, the worst thing
that could happen would be a speaker output that shouldn't be
  there).

This is due to the Internal Speaker Phantom Jack kctrl not being
  created.

HDMI wired to Nvidia does not work in a Nvidia Optimus Enabled Laptop

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Having a Xinerama desktop environment is impossibe as long as the HDMI
video port is linked to the Nvidia car in a optimus enabled laptop
(here , the Dell XPS 15).

Installing Bumblebee, openbox, and synergy with some tweaking, we can enable
the HDMI video having a separate window manager with low quality rendering.

Title:
[HP Workstation z420, Z820]: Unity menu dock visually corrupted after
  resume from suspend.

Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
  Problem encountered:

I've seen this happen on a couple of machines running 12.04 LTS with
  base 3.2.0.23 kernel level.

1.) Choose suspend from menu drop down.
2.) Shake mouse or hit key to resume
3.) System will resume and unity launcher on the left hand side will be
distorted. Display is otherwise fine.

  Workaround:

All you need to do usually to clear the distortion is to hover the
mouse icon over the affected launcher menu. The menu will then return
  to its original unaltered condition.

Reproducable? Yes, this can be reproduced after every suspend in a 250
  cycle loop.

  Screenshot is attached.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 562005] Re: Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs no longer function while using proprietary drivers

2012-10-19 Thread Brendan Donegan
When certifying systems with Ubuntu, we only test with the open-source
graphics drivers installed by Ubuntu. If these do not work properly then
we will try with the proprietary drivers. So this particular system has
never been tested by us with the proprietary drivers, and it is correct
to refer to it as being certified since it apparently works fine with
the open-source ones. Is there a particular reason why the proprietary
NVIDIA driver is desirable over nouveau for this system?

Title:
Backlight controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS and Quadro FX 880M GPUs
no longer function while using proprietary drivers

Status in Ubuntu Certification Programme:
  Incomplete
Status in “nvidia-graphics-drivers” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
The brightness controls of laptops with NVIDIA NVS 3100M or Quadro FX
880M GPUs work while running Nouveau or when using a text mode VT,
but not while running X and using proprietary NVIDIA drivers. It is
possible to force the NVIDIA driver to control the backlight by adding
[Option RegistryDwords EnableBrightnessControl=1] to the Devices
section of xorg.conf . While this allows the backlight to be
controlled, the increments are inconsistent and often result in a
buzzing noise from the LED backlight on Lenovo ThinkPad T510s and
W510s. Since this did not occur while running nouveau or when
switching in text VT, something is wrong.

This bad backlight behaviour has been confirmed on ThinkPad models T510 and
W510 with NVIDIA NVS 3100m and Quadro FX 880M chipsets, respectively, via
http://www.thinkwiki.org/wiki/Category:T510
Because this issue is related to NVIDIA's proprietary video driver, this
issue can only be solved by them. An NVIDIA developer has said he will
investigate the issues, which are discussed on the nvnews.net forums at
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=145105 and
http://www.nvnews.net/vbulletin/showthread.php?t=150069 . For future reference,
the latest NVIDIA drivers can be found in the Ubuntu X-Swat X updates PPA:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1023486] [NEW] Cannot resolve domain names if eth0 is in /etc/network/interfaces

2012-07-11 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

I installed two systems with Quantal via a preseed. After booting,
neither of them could connect to the web. A workaround was to remove the
eth0 section from /etc/network/interfaces (which the preseed added).
This is the interfaces file before:

auto lo
iface lo inet loopback

auto eth0
iface eth0 inet dhcp

After restarting network-manager service it worked again immediately.

It was also suggested that the state of resolv.conf on the system might
be a problem:

nameserver 209.6.3.210
nameserver 127.0.0.1
search lexenab

Removing nameserver 127.0.0.1 and restarting networking/resolvconf and
network-manager seemed to fix it.

(having looked at the resolv.conf file after it worked again the
127.0.0.1 is back, which is interesting)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 937934] [NEW] Rhythmbox integration with indicator-sound is broken

2012-02-21 Thread Brendan Donegan
Public bug reported:

I have none of the following problems with Banshee, so I'm pinning these
on Rhythmbox.

1.) Selecting the 'Rhythmbox' option from the menu of indicator-sound doesn't
do anything. It should open an instance of the application
2.) While a track is playing, clicking the large 'Play' button on the menu
causes a 'waiting' icon to appear on the button, but nothing ever happens (I
need to kill indicator-sound for the play icon to reappear)
3.) No track information is displayed on the menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 880331] Re: Can no longer shutdown when laptop lid closes

2011-10-28 Thread Brendan Donegan
Not sure how valid this bug is, since it seems more likely that the
'Shutdown' option was removed very deliberately as a simplification of
the gnome-control-center design, but it's definitely not a Nautilus
issue so I have moved it from there to g-c-c

3.2.0-0ubuntu1
3.expected to keep this option I had configured in Natty after upgrading to
Oneiric
  4. after migrating to Oneiric, this feature (closing the lid shuts down the
laptop) disappeared. There is no way to set it again inside the power settings
menu of the software center, as this option does not appear anymore under the
settings for the lid options. Nor is it possible to set it again via
gconf-editor: apps--gnome-power-manager--buttons and set lid_ac and/or
lid_battery to shutdown (when changed to shutdown, it does not change the
power manager behavior when the lid closes)-
