[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-05-01 Thread Carsten Schnober
I'm happy to see that this bug has been more or less resolved in 14.04
by changing the dialog to a less intrusive notification.

Title:
Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when
  resuming from suspend

Status in Gnome Settings Daemon:
  Unknown
Status in “gnome-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to 13.10 today, every time I unlock my computer after
leaving it for a long time I get this prompt:

  --

  Power

  Automatic suspend

Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity.

  --

However, the computer doesn't actually suspend.

And even if I do this manually (which works) and then resume, the
prompt is still there (and in that case, not true at all).

This is ugly and seems broken!

As suggested by the upstream Gnome bug report, this is an issue
pertaining to Ubuntu's lack of systemd integration.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-01-19 Thread Carsten Schnober
I second pdknsk's suggestion. There might be some rare situation in which a
notification before going to sleep could be helpful, but in a typical scenario,
being inactive implies that a user is not watching the screen anyway.
On the other hand, I suppose that users that are silently reading on the screen
would actually be pleased by a notification. Having them in mind, I would
suggest to replace the notification window with an onscreen message through
empathy.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1232454] Re: Computer will suspend very soon because of inactivity. dialog when resuming from suspend

2014-01-10 Thread Carsten Schnober
Thanks for the suggestions. I'd like to point out, however, that automatically
killing the notification windows affects any notification, including ones that
might indicate completely unrelated issues. I suppose this could result in
quite annoying effects when potentially important messages are dismissed
through this. Therefore I would not even consider this approach a workaround
for the actual problem.
There might be a way to kill specific notification windows only, but I don't
think that this leads to a clean solution for the bug either.

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  ubuntu 11.10,
  rhythmbox 2.90.1~20110908-0ubuntu1.1

Rhythmbox should prevent suspension when music is playing, if power-
manager plugin is enabled. Even though rhythmbox-plugins is installed
on my laptop and power-manager is found in /usr/lib/rhythmbox/plugins/
, I cannot enable power manager in rhythmbox because the relative
entry is not listed in the edit plugins dialog. Thus the system
goes to sleep even when rhythmbox is playing. I tried enabling it
through gconf-editor, but it is not effective.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1161599] Re: Backup to Ubuntu one failed, after 5 attempts status 400 bad request

2013-05-04 Thread Carsten Schnober
Hi,
I'm just wondering whether there is any progress on this issue. Unfortunately,
this bug makes the Ubuntu backup system unusable for the affected users,
leaving them without a backup of their data. So I believe this creates a
certain level of pressure of eventually fixing this. Thanks!

Bug description:
On Raring using deja-dup to backup to Ubuntu one, when I add a particular git
repository to the folders to backup and then start the backup, the process sits
for some minutes at the start of the upload operation and then fails with a
popup Backup Failed. Giving up on request after 5 attempts last status 400 bad
request. The progress bar does not get started as far as I can see.
While it is saying that it is uploading I can see in System Monitor that data
is being continuously sent, but after the failure there are no new files on U1.

By a process of elimination I determined that it is the objects
directory (which itself contains a large number of subdirectories each
containing a number of small files) that is causing the problem. I
attempted to determine whether it was a particular file or folder that
was causing the problem but it seems not to be consistent. I thought
that I had found a particular subfolder causing the problem, I cleared
.cache/deja_dup, and then it accepted that folder. However when I
then put back the rest of the subfolders it failed again.

I copied the complete git repository to another machine (running up to
date Ubuntu 12.04) and backing up from there (to a different U1
  account) deja_dup has no problems.

I also notice that on Raring it always takes a long time in the
verification phase even when only a trivial change has been made. It
is as if it is downloading the whole repository, but whether that is a
related problem I do not know.
