[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1441603] Re: The "CURLY LOGICAL OR/AND" glyphs across all Nanum fonts are swapped over.
Don't expect this issue be fixed. FYI, only the upstream (Naver Corp) can fix it, because "fixing" it by others without changing the font name is a clear violation of SIL OFL license. And Naver doesn't care about this font and is focusing on other "BarunGothic" font. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to fonts-nanum in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1441603 Title: The "CURLY LOGICAL OR/AND" glyphs across all Nanum fonts are swapped over. Status in fonts-nanum package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: SYSTEM AND PACKAGE VERSIONS Ubuntu Precise 12.04.5 LTS Package fonts-nanum. Tested with version 3.010-2, but appears still to be present in versions 20131007-1 (Trusty) and 20140930-1 (Vivid). The Firefox referred to below is version 37.0.1+build1-0ubuntu0.12.04.1. SANITY CHECK Just in case you are also having the same problem that I describe below, the following characters should all point in the SAME directions: - Pointing DOWN: ⋎ ∨ v (0x22CE, 0x2228, 0x76) - Pointing UP: ⋏ ∧ ^ (x022CF, 0x2227, 0x5e) Those all display correctly for me in the text box I'm submitting this report from (in Firefox), but the first character of each group (the CURLY LOGICAL OR/AND character) is upside down for me in the submitted bug report. If some characters above point in the wrong direction for you too, you should also expect them to be displayed incorrectly in the bug description below. PROBLEM DESCRIPTION The four font files - /usr/share/fonts/truetype/nanum/NanumGothic.ttf - /usr/share/fonts/truetype/nanum/NanumGothicBold.ttf - /usr/share/fonts/truetype/nanum/NanumMyeongjo.ttf - /usr/share/fonts/truetype/nanum/NanumMyeongjoBold.ttf all have an error in their glyphs for Unicode codepoints 0x22CE and 0x22CF. (I'm using http://www.unicode.org/charts/PDF/U2200.pdf here for reference, which other fonts (e.g. DejaVu Sans) also agree with on these codepoints.) 0x22CE (⋎) is the codepoint for the "CURLY LOGICAL OR" symbol (point downwards) but the glyph given in the fonts above is the CURLY LOGICAL AND symbol (point upwards). Similarly, 0x22CF (⋏) is the codepoint for the "CURLY LOGICAL AND" symbol (point upwards) but is rendered by the fonts above with the CURLY LOGICAL OR symbol (point downwards). The NanumMyeongjo fonts are selected (at least for me and my colleagues) by Firefox when it renders those glyphs, and these fonts are installed by default in Ubuntu 12.04 Desktop. The Firefox font choice is unchanged even after we installed additional fonts (e.g. STIXGeneral) which contain the glyphs in their correct form. I have attached a screen capture demonstrating an example of this "in the wild". As the glyphs are swapped (rather than simply missing) they still *look* correct when viewed in context, and this causes subtle and quite serious problems because it can literally change the meaning of the mathematical formulae we use in our work. (For example, these symbols are used for rendering formal specifications in the Z language, and the meaning of a specification can be fundamentally altered by swapping one of those characters for the other.) I realise that the primary purpose of this package is to provide Korean characters, not mathematical symbols, but since this bug is a) potentially quite serious, literally changing the meaning of displayed content, b) present when viewing content in the default browser on a default Ubuntu Desktop install, and c) presumably correctable by swapping over the two existing glyphs, I hope it can be fixed quickly. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1581160] Re: Switch to Noto Sans as default font for Japanese and/or Korean?
Correction: that oss-desktop-korean mail [1] is not only intended for Debian, though I created that group and also I am a Debian developer. (Actually Debian doesn't have distribution-wide custom font config.) I already filed the change request to the upstream (fontconfig) [2]. I prefer Noto Sans CJK. As I described in the mail, Noto Sans CJK has many advantages over Nanum fonts. On the other hand, Nanum fonts has many flaws but it is unmaintained in upstream and its OFL license makes the flaws to difficult to fix. Please remember that the discussion is about providing reasonable *default* font to Korean users, not about Nanum font deletion or about using a font you don't like. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 780725] Re: Romaja hangeul commit behavior unclear, space does not operate as expected
FYI, Romaja input is not for practical use by design. Your "patch" will break usual Hangul input. In the 2-bul or 3-bul Hangul IMEs, pressing space just works as you have seen; it just inputs space after the precomposed Hangul character. Space is never used for explicit commit key like what it does in Japanese or Chinese IMEs. ** Changed in: nabi (Ubuntu) Status: New => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to nabi in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/780725 Title: Romaja hangeul commit behavior unclear, space does not operate as expected Status in “nabi” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: nabi I'm trying to use the Romaja method in nabi since I didn't grow up using a Korean keyboard and I'm learning Korean. but when I press space after entering a hangeul, a space actually appears in addition to committing my last hangeul. so there is a space between every single hangeul i commit, which obviously causes a problem, because not each single hangeul on its own is necessarily a "word" here's an example of where it would cause a problem: if I wanted to type "bag su chyeo": 박수쳐 (what i expect to commit: what it should be according to the real phrase and the syllables) 박숯혀 (if i don't press space at all and just "keep typing", possible ambiguous interpretation and not what i want) 박 수 쳐 (when i press space, correct but the undesired spaces are there) Perhaps I simply don't know how to use the package, but I wasn't able to find documentation on specifying how to commit what I just entered. I can use the right arrow key but that's ergonomically uncomfortable; I find the space much easier. With scim I press space and it simply commits, not adds another space, so that's what I was used to. I'm not using scim because it has another bad focus bug in it. I'm not sure if this applies to 2-bul and 3-bul, but at least for Romaja it causes a problem. I came up with a patch that fixes it in the meantime. I don't claim to know anything about IMEs but I can confirm that it produces the desired behavior. === Add space for commit ability. src/ic.c:~1980 /* PATCH: imitate scim: commit hangeul when space is pressed */ if (!nabi_ic_is_empty(ic) && keysym == XK_space) { nabi_ic_flush(ic); return True; } === Please consider this behavior for Romaja users. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 660957] Re: ibus Korean(Hangul) duplicates previous character after moving to a different input entry with mouse
I believe it's not ibus-hangul bug. Probably browser or webkit bug, but never an IME backend bug. Please find exactly which software caused this bug. ** Changed in: ibus-hangul (Ubuntu) Status: Confirmed => Invalid -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to ibus-hangul in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/660957 Title: ibus Korean(Hangul) duplicates previous character after moving to a different input entry with mouse Status in “ibus-hangul” package in Ubuntu: Invalid Bug description: Binary package hint: ibus The ibus Korean(Hangul) has a bug that duplicates previous character after moving to a different input entry with mouse. For example, when entering Korean characters in multi form entries on a web site, if you finished one entry and move to the next one with Tab key, it is okay. However, if you move to the next entry with mouse, the ibus Korean(Hangul) duplicates the last character typed in the previous entry. Entry1 Entry2 가나 나 Even though I've never typed 나 in Entry2. By just moving the input mouse pointer to Entry2 by clicking it, the ibus Korean(Hangul) duplicates the last character typed. I guess that the solution would be to make a mouse pointer move equivalent to Tab key, thus the Korean(Hangul) automaton just resets its input buffer in this case also. Is it hard to implement this? Other input method like nabi has no such problem. Thank you. Since Sep. 2007, ttf-unfonts-core has been a suggested package of ubuntu-desktop. In a default install, Unfonts are set as the default Korean font. A superior quality Korean font (ttf-nanum) became available as from late 2010 under OFL. In May 2011, Google ChromeOS adopted ttf-nanum as the default Korean font. After an extensive discussion in the Ubuntu Korean LoCo Mailing list since last year, a consensus has now been reached that it is time to migrate to ttf-nanum as the default Korean font in Ubuntu. To achieve this, (1) ttf-unfonts-core (7.4Mb package size) must be replaced with ttf-nanum (7.5Mb package size) as the suggested package of ubuntu-desktop (2) language-support-fonts-ko should now include ttf-unfonts-core and ttf-nanum-coding (3) appropriate changes need to be made in some of the configurations files shipped with language-selector-common and fontconfig-config (proposed patches are attached herewith).
