[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2028006] [NEW] ps2ascii man page is wrong about PDFs on standard input

2023-07-17 Thread Daniel Barrett
Public bug reported:

The ps2ascii man page says: "PDF input must come from an explicitly-
named file, not standard input." This is incorrect. ps2ascii is
perfectly happy to read a PDF from standard input:

   cat file.pdf | ps2ascii

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1661486] Re: nouveau write fault, CTXSW_TIMEOUT, hangs the display

2017-02-23 Thread Daniel Barrett
I switched from nouveau to the proprietary nvidia driver (nvidia-375),
and the crashes have stopped.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1658185] Re: nouveau occasionally won't come back from DPMS suspend/off

2017-02-12 Thread Daniel Barrett
David, by any chance, are you running VMware Workstation when these
problems happen?

My computer has similar symptoms, and when I ssh in, VMware Workstation
seems to be in an odd state. I can't suspend my VMs from the command
line (in preparation for a reboot of the host).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1628707] Re: Highlighting a region in emacs is invisible because region color equals window color

It's possible that some X resource hidden in my account is setting the
background color. Can someone please tell me where to look for these
resource settings?

Title:
Highlighting a region in emacs is invisible because region color
  equals window color

Status in emacs24 package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
If you open an Emacs window in Plasma/KDE, and you try to highlight a
region of text by dragging the mouse, no highlighting appears. This is
because the color for highlighting a region is identical to the color
for the window background. I believe this color clash occurs between
  Ubuntu's emacs24 package and Ubuntu's X resource settings.

To reproduce, log into Plasma, remove your $HOME/.emacs init file (so
you have no personal customizations), and run emacs in an X window:

$ emacs

The window's background color is a light gray. Then type any text,
click and drag the mouse over the text (or use keystroke commands to
define a region). No highlighting appears, because the "region" color
is also light gray. You can see this by running the emacs command:

M-x list-faces-display

I'll attach a screenshot so you can see that the "region" highlighting
  doesn't show up.

The problem goes away if you disable the Ubuntu-supplied emacs init
  files:

$ emacs -Q

This is why I suspect the color is set badly in the Ubuntu emacs24
  package.

You can see the X background color by running the "appres" command in
a shell window, which proves a light gray background is set, the same
  color as region highlighting:

*background:#eff0f1

I tried to find the file where this background color is set, but I was
  not successful.

I realize that there are workarounds, like manually sending the
  suspend signal:

$ sudo kill -TSTP pid of emacs

but something special and new (and unwanted) is happening with emacs

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1223291] Re: sudo emacs cannot be backgrounded afterward by shell

2013-09-10 Thread Daniel Barrett
Sorry, I made a typo in my report. The command:

  $ sudo emacs gnome-terminal

should be:

  $ sudo gnome-terminal

** Description changed:

  When I run:

- $ sudo emacs /etc/myfile
+   $ sudo emacs /etc/myfile

and later try to background it by typing ^Z in the invoking shell, the
keystroke is ignored and merely echoes to the screen as ^Z.

This did NOT happen in Ubuntu 10.04 LTS.

This does NOT happen for any of the following commands:

- $ sudo emacs -nw /etc/myfile(which runs emacs in the existing
gnome-terminal window)
- $ sudo emacs gnome-terminal (a different program that also opens
a window)
+   $ sudo emacs -nw /etc/myfile (which runs emacs in the existing

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 969359] Re: [keyboard]: gnome-settings-daemon consumes 100% cpu (and blinking numlock)

2013-09-07 Thread Daniel Barrett
I can confirm this error message occurs in Ubuntu 13.04 64-bit while
running VMware Workstation 10, each time that the mouse pointer crosses
onto, or off of, the VMware window.

(gnome-settings-daemon:5101): libappindicator-CRITICAL **:
app_indicator_set_label: assertion `IS_APP_INDICATOR (self)' failed

However, my CPU does not spike to 100%, at least as far as I can tell.

  Impact:
gnome-settings-daemon uses 100% cpu for ever in some cases

  Test Case:
Seems to happen sometimes after docking or connecting with vnc, try to
connect to the machine using a vnc client a few times and check there is no
numlock cycle and cpu usage loop starting

  Regression potential:
The numlock state could be wrongly set, restored on login in some cases

  Original message:
  -

I don't know how to reproduce this bug, but after varying amounts of
normal usage of my laptop, I notice gnome-settings-daemon is consuming
  100% (approx) CPU.

I am not sure how to restart gnome-settings-daemon, I tried opening a
terminal and running gnome-settings-daemon again but this crashes my
system - my external monitor switches off and my laptop locks up. I am
  able to reboot with SysRq+REISUB.

Sorry I cannot provide more information - it happens twice now, maybe
someone can tell me how to get more information for the next time this
  happens.
