[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1033579] Re: NM doesn't autoconnect to mobile broadband -- Nokia 2730 classic

2012-08-17 Thread Dave Russell
So this is a regression since the release of 12.04? Works fine when
first installed, doesn't work as expected after it's been upgraded to
the latest versions?

I have verified this on both a Lenovo X201 and a Lenovo T500 laptop.

Both work perfectly with fully updated 10.10 and 11.04 versions of
  Ubuntu.

However, booting into a fully updated 11.10 (as of 28/08/11) I get
very poor wireless networking performance. Between 6-10% packet loss,
very very slow connection and transfer rate. All in all, practically
  unusable.

I have reported the bug on the X201 laptop, I will add the similar
logs from the T500 also if required.

As soon as I swap back to either 10.10 or 11.04 I get perfect
wireless, it's only on 11.10 that I get problems, this would suggest
it's not hardware or configuration on my side.

I have had this since first installing 11.10 which was a little after
  Alpha 2.

  Wired connection is fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2011-12-09 Thread Dave Russell
Confirmed. Natty with Oneiric Network Manager (and deps) suffers from
the same performance problem as pure Oneiric.

Tested with 2.6.38-13-generic #52-Ubuntu kernel.

Will attach dpkg lists (before and after) and update log from network-
manager install/update from oneiric repos.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2011-12-09 Thread Dave Russell
@ Mathieu Trudel-Lapierre (mathieu-tl) wrote on 2011-10-24: #72

Given the weight of recent testing, the issue is indeed looking like a
userspace issue of some sort, potentially network-manager. Therefore I
have set the status of the network-manager task back to "confirmed" for
Oneiric.

I have set the Precise one to "Incomplete" as I have not performed any
such testing on that platform yet... probably my next step.

This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage...

As you can see from the above... using wicd on oneiric provides a stable
connection even with N enabled. However also note from the spreadsheet
that the rate is limited to G speeds even when using wicd on Oneiric,
something that does not happen when using Network Manager on Oneiric.

I'm about to use Oneiric Network Manager on Natty, but there's such a
huge swathe of dependancies, I'll need to re-install the machine after
testing as it'll be a hideous Frankenstein's monster of a build.

very very slow connection and transfer rate.

2011-12-07 Thread Dave Russell
Equipment: Laptop Lenovo X201 with Intel Corporation Centrino
Ultimate-N 6300 (rev 0x74)
   Wireless Router Belkin
Environment Router in room below, many devices connected.

Ubuntu Kernel AP ModeMeasured Speed (iperf)
Link Quality Bit Rate Works

Oneiric 3.0.0-12-generic #20-ubuntu ABGN mixed 158 Kbits/sec
64/70240 Mbits/sec No
Oneiric 2.6.39-020639ABGN mixed 101 Kbits/sec
63/70135 Mbits/sec No
Oneiric 3.0.0-0300-generic #201107220917 ABGN mixed 17.5 Kbits/sec
67/70120 Mbits/sec No
Oneiric 3.0.0-0300-generic #201107220917 G Only 11.2 Mbits/sec
60/7054 Mbits/sec Yes
Natty2.6.38-13-generic #52-Ubuntu ABGN mixed 11.7 Mbits/sec
66/7054 Mbits/sec Yes
Natty2.6.38-020638-genericABGN mixed 12.3 Mbits/sec
68/7054 Mbits/sec Yes
Natty2.6.39-020639rc4-generic ABGN mixed 13.5 Mbits/sec
66/7054 Mbits/sec Yes

So I've run nearly identical kernels on both natty and oneiric, 2.6.39-020639
only difference being the natty one was RC4
So unless something changed between those kernels, natty is limited to G speeds
regardless and suffers no performance degredation
Where as oneiric isn't limited and even with what should be a *good* kernel, is
hopeless
Unless there were significant changes between the Natty 2.6.39-020639 RC4
kernel and the Oneiric 2.6.39-020639 kernel

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened

2011-12-01 Thread Dave Russell
I should also add I tend to ctrl+alt+arrowkey to switch between
workspaces because I run firefox on workspace1 and tbird on workspace2,
irc on workspace3 and then other random stuff on workspace4.

I used to run everything maximised, but because of this bug I'm
currently running nothing maximised. It does seem to lessen the issue...
but it still happens a lot.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened

2011-12-01 Thread Dave Russell
Interesting... I tend to use the unity sidebar to switch between
applications, or occasionally alt-tab rather than expo.

I do get the problems when Firefox is *not* maximised, but they happen
far more often when firefox *is* maximised.

I must admit I'd forgotten about this bug recently since I switched back
to unity2d because it was so irritating, but I'm back in unity3d for a
while to see if I can find out what's going on.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 872207] Re: When Firefox is running in Unity, drop-down menus sometime close when opened

2011-12-01 Thread Dave Russell
This is also seriously affecting 11.10 on unity3d.

Other workarounds I've noticed is un-maximising firefox and re-
maximising it. That seems to get things working for a while longer.

It eventually has the same problems again though.

I get this 20+ times a day.

This is something which used to happen regularly though not always (I
switched to using fallback mode for a while because of it).
Basically, drop-down menus in Firefox such as RSS feeds (or in Natty
without the global menu the normal application menus were affected
too) are simply not shown when clicked on. Context menus also fail to
appear. This often disappeared for no apparent reason after I had
used Firefox for a while. I haven't seen it for a while, but it has
just re-appeared, possibly because I started Unity as "unity
--replace" since I am currently testing an application's behaviour
  with different window managers.

I'm sorry if this information is a bit threadbare. Please let me know
if I can provide any additional helpful information.

This may be either network-manager or kernel, depending on triage...

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 861265] Re: [Oneiric] [Regression] firefox title bar does not appear (same problem with thunderbird) no window decoration for either application.

2011-10-21 Thread Dave Russell
This bug was where the window decoration was disappearing completely.

That's certainly not intended behaviour.

However I've not seen this bug for a while, it may well be fixed now...
anyone else still getting this? Otherwise I'll close it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 868684] Re: vblank counter failed - screen hung

2011-10-12 Thread Dave Russell
I agree, for me it's "mostly" when the system has been running for a
while, so I've seen it 2-3 times first thing in the morning when the
system has been left running overnight.

I'm able to ssh into the machine and poke about, look at logs, report
bugs etc, but the display is hung.

Unfortunately I'm travelling at the moment so not much chance of having
a system running for very long.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828623] Re: gnome control centre does not allow you to disable the laptop screen while leaving an external connected screen working

2011-09-14 Thread Dave Russell
I've just done some further testing. The behaviour varies depending on
whether I use the displayport or vga connections.

Laptop Panel + VGA = With both on, the picture is perfect and I can move
windows from one to the other.

NO Laptop Panel, Just VGA = I am able to disable the onboard laptop
screen and just have the external monitor, however the external display
is corrupted.

Displayport connectivity behaves as described previously mentioned, i.e.
still completely blank when attempting to disable laptop screen, but
fine if both are allowed to display.

I have also verified that the same behaviour is exhibited under Fedora
16 Alpha LiveCD. Will raise upstream and Fedora Bugs.

** Also affects: gnome-control-center (Fedora)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 836250] Re: [Oneiric] Intel Corporation Centrino Ultimate-N 6300 poor networking, packet loss and very slow Lenovo X201 and T500 laptops

2011-09-13 Thread Dave Russell
Dustin - good catch... I can confirm it's only wireless-n connections
that expose the problem. Just tried connecting to phone hotspot and that
works fine.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 792636] Re: Power section no longer allows configuration of "when the lid is closed" action in Oneiric

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely agree with you that the functionality
should be in the default system config tools.

I'm just assisting in providing another workaround until this problem
gets solved properly.

Yup, just goes blank.

If you prefer a gui, you could install "gnome-tweak"

Shell > Laptop lid close

You can change the setting for when running on battery and when
connected to AC.

A workaround is to run the following commands:

xrandr --size 1920x1200 --output LVDS1 --off --output HDMI1 --mode 1920x1200
compiz --replace

Still, it really should work via the gui...

affected, please shout out.

Title:
Unable to login without logging into the terminal first

Status in “lightdm” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released

Bug description:
Ok, it turns out removing the .dmrc file isn't the cause of my logins
  working:

I removed it yesterday while I was logged in and shutdown my computer.
Today I switched my computer on and the login screen, again, wouldn't
let me in. I jumped into terminal to remove the .dmrc file, only to
discover that it wasn't there. I went back to the login screen and
this time it let me straight in.

So it looks like simply logging into the terminal allows the login
  screen to work...

  OLD:
After a recent dist-upgrade, I have been unable to login without first
deleting the .dmrc file within my home directory.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 828623] [NEW] gnome control centre does not allow you to disable the laptop screen while leaving an external connected screen working

2011-08-18 Thread Dave Russell
Public bug reported:

Lenovo T500 with displayport has a 1920x1200 monitor attached, I use the
displayport in a similar way to a docking station in that I attach the
monitor with a displayport to dvi cable, and then expect to be able to
switch off the laptops internal display, only leaving the external
monitor working.

Screen detection works fine, mirrored screen works fine, but disabling
the internal display and activating the external display just leads to
the screen going black until the timeout has been reached, whereupon it
reverts to its previous setting.

This is a fully updated oneiric install

ProblemType: Bug
DistroRelease: Ubuntu 11.10
Package: gnome-control-center 1:3.1.4-0ubuntu5
