[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1883415] [NEW] Net profile dialog too small

2020-06-14 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

The New Profile dialog in the Network Settings is too small.
Not all options are visible.

It can not be resized.

Is there a reason to cram a GUI into a poststamp sized rectangle? I have
this huge monitor.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 658004] Re: brasero dvd capacity estimation is broken

2017-12-02 Thread David Balažic
I tried ubuntu 17.10 (live) and it seems thing changed.

When I try to test an ISO file, in the right click menu there is no more
a "Write to Disc..." option.

The closest thing is "Open With Disk Image Writer", which then ask for the
destination drive, but does not allow the DVD unit (there is a blank DVD+RW
inserted, displayed as so on the desktop) to be selected, it is greyed out.
Even if I try a smaller (391MB) ISO file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1315265] Re: Broadcom Device BCM43142 Wireless Driver for Ubuntu 14.04 LTS 64Bit Desktop not working out of box

2014-12-05 Thread David Balažic
Ofer, is that a fix for the missing driver or the Creating object for
path issue?

I also have the second problem on a 14.10 live system.

Probably a new bug should be opened for that issue.

There is some info (and workarounds) about it here:
http://askubuntu.com/questions/469783/ubuntu-14-04-cant-connect-to-new-
password-protected-wifi-network

After installing Ubuntu 14.04 Desktop version 64 bit on my Dell Vostro 2520
Laptop, I expected the wirless card to automatically be detected and to be able
to connect to any wireless network for seamless internet access.

However, the driver for wifi did not get automatically installed. I
looked around for some information in the web and found a blog
suggestion to run the following command for wifi to work:

  $sudo apt-get install linux-headers-generic build-essential dkms

After running this command, I found the driver to show up in the right
corner, but when I select a wifi network, I saw another error:

  (1) Creating object for path
  '/org/freedesktop/NetworkManager/ActiveConnection/2' failed in libnm-
  glib.

I tried asking in the freenode ubuntu irc chatroom but did not get any
  solutions.

After trying out several suggestions from the chat room, nothing
  worked.

  Workaround:
Finally, through nm-applet I clicked on Edit Connections and selected the
wifi network I was trying to add. Then in the security settings, I typed the
password for accessing the wifi and configured it.

When I unplugged my LAN and restarted wifi, it worked. Now I am able
  to access the wifi.

The forum member in Ubuntu chatroom suggested I file a bug:

To summarize the issue is, there is no inbuilt driver for Broadcom
  BCM43142 Network Controller.

Please help fix this in the next update. Let me know if you need any
  further information.

  Thanks
  Sharath

It is the same with Ubuntu 13.10 amd64.

The only thing that happens is an automated message once a year, asking
if the bug somehow magically disappeared, all by itself.

Is anyone (beside users) reading this?

I booted the live environment from an USB stick using the
  ubuntu-10.10-desktop-i386.iso

I inserted a CD into the built in optical unit.
It is mounted and an icon appears on the desktop.

   - I open it by double-click : the contents are displayed in a window
   - in terminal I check with df that is is mounted
   - I press the eject button on the unit: the CD is ejected

  Problems:
OS does not notice the CD is ejected. The content windows is still there,
also the icon on desktop. df also shows it as still mounted. (mount also).

   - I insert a different CD
   - In the CD content window (still showing content of the first CD) I open a
folder:
the folder content from the first CD is displayed (probably cached)

   - I open a text file in that folder: the text editor opens and
complains it can't read the file due to I/O error

syslog has a few lines of : ISOFS: unable to read i-node block

ls also show the old file contents.

If I right click the CD icon on desktop, it is refreshed:
   - the label changes to the label of the second CD
   - it is remounted (the content of the second CD is now readable), but under
/media/label_of_first_CD , not its own label

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 658004] Re: brasero dvd capacity estimation is broken

2013-02-24 Thread David Balažic
I teseted again. When brasero is started from a terminal window, the the old
version gives the mentioned no space error.
After updating to -ubuntu3.1* it works without giving that error.

The right click an ISO file and select Write to Disc... scenario still gives
the same error.
Is that handled by a different package? Or somehow the old version is cached
(running all the time in background)?

* why does comment 15 mention ubuntu4 ?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1083737] [NEW] Monitors can not be selected or moved

2012-11-27 Thread David Balažic
Public bug reported:

Can not select (and therefore move) the monitors.

There are 3 monitors shown in the app, it is a laptop with two external

After some random clicking I discovered that it works if I click about
an inch higher that where the monitor icons are.

Basically monitor selection or placing is impossible unless the user
discovers the above trick.

Brasero claims an iso file is too large for the disc.
The inserted disc is a blanked DVD+RW.
The file is 4,700,372,992 bytes big, which is the official capacity of DVD+RW
discs (as per wikipedia and other sources).

  What I did:
   - insert a DVD+RW with content
   - cp /dev/sr0 dvd.iso
   - check dvd.iso size to be 4,700,372,992 bytes
   - right click dvd.iso and select Write to Disc...

  Result:
The brasero/nautilus dialog claims: The data size is too large for the disc
even with the overburn option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2012-11-07 Thread David Balažic
From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut:

A paper cut is a trivially fixable usability bug that the average user
would encounter in default installation of Ubuntu or Kubuntu Desktop
Edition.

Firefox is part of the default installation.

On the other hand, this fails on the trivially fixable part.

PS: The https://wiki.ubuntu.com/PaperCut page is missing in action. (it
shows This page does not exist yet. You can create a new empty page, or
use one of the page templates.)

  * No. For human eyes, such a small object is much easier to find by movement

pointer will appear, and they'll see where it is.

  This is nuts!
  * It's worked on the Mac for over two decades. Most people haven't noticed.

Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2012-11-06 Thread David Balažic
Actually, GTK3 is the only library having it fixed.
Also some GTK2 apps might have had it fixed (cursor over text input
box and similar).
(almost) Everything else (like non GTK apps) still has this problem.

This is not the same request. The gnome bug is about automatic

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 658004] Re: brasero claims dvd image is too large for disc

2011-11-14 Thread David Balažic
Why is this marked with importance Low?
Certain data sets can not be written at all due to this bug.

From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Bugs/Importance :

Low: Bugs which affect functionality, but to a lesser extent than most
bugs, examples are:

Bugs that have easy work-arounds

Bugs that affect unusual end-user configurations or uncommon hardware
Bugs that affect a non-essential aspect and limited scope of the application
Bugs that have a moderate impact on a non-core application
Cosmetic/usability issues that does not limit the functionality of a non-core
application
Non-ideal default configurations

None of this applies.

Besides, the fix is trivial. What should be done to have it committed as
soon as possible?

   - cp /dev/sr0 dvd.iso
   - check dvd.iso size to be 4,700,372,992 bytes
   - right click dvd.iso and select Write to Disc...

  Result:
The brasero/nautilus dialog claims: The data size is too large for the disc
even with the overburn option.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 658004] Re: brasero claims dvd image is too large for disc

2011-11-02 Thread David Balažic
The error seems to be in the file libbrasero-burn/brasero-session-cfg.c
function brasero_session_cfg_check_size() line 873:

BRASERO_BURN_LOG (Session size %lli/Disc size %lli,
  priv-session_blocks,
  priv-disc_size);

if (priv-session_blocks  priv-disc_size) {  // line 873
priv-is_valid = BRASERO_SESSION_VALID;
return BRASERO_SESSION_VALID;
}

The log output says:
BraseroBurn: (at brasero-session-cfg.c :871) Session size 2295104/Disc size
2295104

So there is enough space, but the code expects _more_ than enough space. The
correct check would be:

if (priv-session_blocks = priv-disc_size) {  // fixed line 873

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 16492] Re: Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

2011-10-11 Thread David Balažic
It seems you are talking about the text cursor, while this bug is about
the mouse pointer (also called cursor).

Title:
Mouse pointer should disappear when keyboard is in use and mouse isn't

Status in GTK+ GUI Toolkit:
  New
Status in One Hundred Paper Cuts:
  Triaged
Status in “gtk+2.0” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged
Status in “gtk+2.0” source package in Maverick:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:
  1. Click near the top left of a text field to focus it.
  2. Start typing.
  Or:
  1. Click in a browser window to focus the page.
  2. Read the page, scrolling with the arrow keys.
  Or:
  1. Click in an e-mail message window to focus the message.
  2. Read the message, scrolling with the arrow keys.

  What happens:
  * The mouse pointer gets in the way of what you're typing/reading.

  What should happen:
  * Whenever you press a non-modifier key on the keyboard, if the pointing
device has been neither moved nor clicked in the past ~0.25 seconds, the
pointer
should disappear until the pointing device is next moved or clicked.

But won't this make people lose the pointer?
  * No. For human eyes, such a small object is much easier to find by movement
than by searching the entire screen. As soon as they grab the mouse again, the
pointer will appear, and they'll see where it is.

  This is nuts!
  * It's worked on the Mac for over two decades. Most people haven't noticed.
They just get slightly irritated on *other* platforms when the pointer gets in
  the way.

(Apologies if this is filed under the wrong product.)
