[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772066] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Network-Manager-OpenVPN won't connected, worked in 17.10, 17.04

Looking at Synaptic, the current version of network-manager-openvpn is
1.8.2-1 .

When I look at https://wiki.gnome.org/Projects/NetworkManager , I see

So is Ubuntu 18.04 just behind in updating NetworkManager to be
consistent with the new file locations for OpenVPN 2.4?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1772066] Re: Ubuntu 18.04 Network-Manager-OpenVPN won't connected, worked in 17.10, 17.04

2018-06-16 Thread David Ing
Looking at Synaptic, the version of OpenVPN is 2.4.2-2ubuntu1.

Over on the Manjaro forum at https://forum.manjaro.org/t/vpn-connection-
failed/15259/4 , I see that ..

> !! NOTICE !!

> OpenVPN 2.4.0 update may require administrative interaction

> The upgrade to openvpn 2.4.0 makes changes that are incompatible with
previous configuration. Take special care if you depend on VPN
connectivity for remote access! Administrative interaction is required:

>> Configuration is expected in sub directories now. Move your files
from /etc/openvpn/ to /etc/openvpn/server/ or /etc/openvpn/client/.
The plugin lookup path has changed. Remove extra plugins/ from relative
paths.
>> The systemd unit openvpn@.service was replaced with
openvpn-client@.service and openvpn-server@.service. Restart and
reenable accordingly.

My guess is that the OpenVPN update that impacts Manjaro also impacts
Ubuntu 18.04.

Bug description:
  Its very simple.

  1- Install ubuntu 18.04.
  2- Install Openvpn using apt.
3- Put your configuration at path /etc/openvpn, for example :
/etc/openvpn/myconfig.conf.
4- start openvpn service! It won't start automatically.

Note : my config have a security weakness, but it still valid and
works perfect if I start it manually. For example : openvpn
  /etc/openvpn/myconfig.conf - it works !

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1751005] Re: libreoffice cannot open a document not within $HOME

2018-02-22 Thread David Ing
I have just run upgrades, and am now at LibreOffice 5.4.5.1 on Kubuntu
17.10 . I found this thread because I had the "access was denied"
issue.

My Thinkpad has original Windows 7 disk (where data is obviously stored
on NTFS), and a mSATA on which I have a triple boot install (i.e.
Kubuntu 17.10, Ubuntu 17.10 and Deepin Linux). On this "never fail"
configuration, I should be able to invoke LibreOffice on any of the
three Linux versions, or from Windows 7 (which I practically never do).

I have now run:

  sudo ln -s /etc/apparmor.d/usr.lib.libreoffice.program.*
/etc/apparmor.d/disable/

... so LibreOffice works.

So, I haven't stored my documents under $HOME/ since 2009, and have used
similar configurations running back to Ubuntu 9.04 and Windows XP and
multiboot.

I am not a developer, and would describe myself as a "power user". I
don't really understand apparmor, so I see this new change as something
that could potentially disrupt any user who has multiple partitions on
his or her computer.

Title:
libreoffice cannot open a document not within $HOME

Status in libreoffice package in Ubuntu:
  Opinion

Bug description:
Starting with today's update to LibreOffice 5.4.5.1 40m0(Build:1),
files not within the user $HOME directory cannot be opened. This has
nothing to do with ownership or permissions - the target document is
owned by the user with full permissions. Moving the file to ~/Desktop
allows it to be opened normally.

  Error message in popup window:
Access to /home2/mico/documents/personal/2018 lists.ods was denied.

Error message when launched from terminal:
  $: localc "2018 lists.ods"
javaldx: Could not find a Java Runtime Environment!
Please ensure that a JVM and the package libreoffice-java-common is installed.
If it is already installed then try removing
~/.libreoffice/3/user/config/javasettings_Linux_*.xml
Warning: failed to read path from javaldx

The file mentioned in the error message does not exist.
I removed the corresponding file under ~/.libreoffice/4/ but that makes no
difference.

This but started in Ubuntu 18.04 (alpha) around Feb. 15, and with
today's update (Feb. 22) it appeared in Ubuntu 17.10.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1686130] [NEW] Unity greeter doesn't show other desktop environments, yet allows login to Unity

2017-04-25 Thread David Ing
Public bug reported:

On Ubuntu 16.04, I followed instruction to install KDE Plasma via the
Backports PPA. This didn't work out well. I have been in the process
of removing that installation. The Unity greeter looks normal on
launch, and will let me log in to Unity as usual.

However, when I try to select another desktop environment, that panel
goes blank so that there's no place to log in.

Selecting shutdown from the upper right panel doesn't work. I have to
turn the laptop over and pull the battery to restart.

A similar problem was reported as "Selecting other session in login
screen doesn't do anything" for Ubuntu 12.04 at
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/lightdm/+bug/918072 . This
suggests a workaround to ..

I appreciate that Unity has been announced are stabilized in future
Ubuntu releases. If unity-greeter will no longer be supported, what
greeter will be used in future releases?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1444586] Re: Connection to IMAP timed out, Thunderbird 31.6.0, Ubuntu 14.04.2

2015-04-16 Thread David Ing
No change, after 4 hours. However, after 8 hours (laptops on, but I was
away), the messages started flowing in. Weird.

Bug description:
  Steps to reproduce:

Ran Ubuntu Software Updater on 14.04.2 on April 15 for both a Thinkpad
X200 and a Thinkpad X230T. Started Thunderbird. Expected IMAP

  Actual results:

On two different laptops with the same configuration, IMAP connections
  refused and timed out.

e.g. Could not connect to mail server myn...@gmail.com. The
  connection was refused.

e.g. Connection to server myn...@coevolving.com IMAP timed out

All of the e-mail from April 14 offline is visible. There is no

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1365570] [NEW] XScreensaver 5.15 Ubuntu 14.04 breaks RSS URL, 5.26 available?

2014-09-04 Thread David Ing
Public bug reported:

I installed XScreensaver using Synaptic Package Manager, which shows the
installed version and latest version at 4.15-3ubuntu1.

In Screensaver Preferences ... Advanced ... Image Manipulation ...
Choose Random Image ... I have pasted a URL from my public web site as
...

 http://daviding.com/webphotos/index.php?rss=gallerylang=

... and then change tabs over to Display Mode and then back to
Advanced.

The URL now reads
http:/daviding.cm/weebphotos/index.php?rss=gallerylagg= ... so the RSS
images don't seem to be downloaded.

The problem was noted on Bug #1116006 for Ubuntu 12.10, but appears to
still be a problem with Ubuntu 14.04. There, on 2014-05-14 it says ...

This bug was fixed in the package xscreensaver - 5.26-1ubuntu1

... but that doesn't be included as the current release.

Here are the release and version numbers.
