Title:
  New Epson V19 scanner problems under Ubuntu 18.04.3

Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Bought new Epson V19 scanner, and it works fine on my wife's computer
  running Windows 7, and also on my computer running Windows XP.
  Rebooted my computer into Ubuntu 18.04.3, and installed the driver
  packages recommended by Epson (version 3.61.0 for Ubuntu 18.04, 64
  bit, release date 12-26-2019) using their install.sh file with the
  without-network option (imagescan 3.61.0, imagescan-plugin-gt-s650
  1.0.2, and imagescan-plugin-ocr-engine 1.0.2).  Looking at these
  packages using Aptitude, it appears that they are installed OK with no
  missing dependencies.  Imagescan (on the graphical desktop) appears to
  find the scanner, and when you click to scan, you can hear the scanner
  seeming to run normally, but no image is produced at the end.  Using
  the terminal, lsusb, sane-find-scanner, and scanimage -L all seem to
  work fine for finding the scanner.  But when I try scanimage -T, no
  image file is produced, although you can hear the scanner appearing to
  do a normal scan.  So it appears that all the control functions are
  working fine, but the problem is getting the scan data.  I also tried
  the suggestions in this video
  (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8q82X7PpRaQ) titled "ubuntu 18.04
  scanner problems how to fix them" concerning bug 1728012.  In the end,
  nothing appears to have changed, so it appears I didn't make it any
  better or any worse.  Any help would be greatly appreciated, including
  referring me to another place if I'm not posting in the right place
  yet.  Thank you.

  Up until recently, I've been able to scan fine with my Canon Pixma
  MX7600. Then I upgraded to Ubuntu Wily and I've started getting:

  OK.

  saned is running.

  
  In other words, the status call fails unless done from root.

  simple-scan does not recognize canon LiDE30 scanner

  Mint 16 *and* Mint 17
  Plug in USB scanner, start simple scan. It shows a spinner but never connects 
and scans.
  Strangely, the scanner is shown properly in the preferences!

  The scanner makes some noises but does not scan.

  This used to work under Mint16 until some upgrade pooched it.

  saned is not running, but pidfile existed.

  Running the status call once more after that will reveal that the PID
  file is now gone.

  I was trying to access my all-in-one Epson EP804AW's scanner through a
  WiFi network.

  This does not work out of the box.

  I had found instructions for generically enabling scan over WifI for epson by 
adding, in /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf:
  net 255.255.255.255 # using the printer's IP

  This is INCORRECT for the EP804AW.

  It caused Simple Scan and xsane to crash (hence the sane-backends bug report).
  It also locked up the EP804AW, which had to be power-cycled and recalibrated.

  I found the correct method in this guide:

  This procedure could be simplified by installing the avasys "iscan"
  drivers from jockey.

  Jockey already provides installation options for avasys's printer

Bug description:
  I'm using SANE with a Mustek BearPaw 1200CU Plus scanner, using the
  firmware from  (MD5 f2f275c5a8ad5dbdc43793f046612417).
  When I run "scanimage --batch", scanimage segfaults after scanning the
  first page and returning the head to the home position:

Bug description:
  The default install of Maverick installs sane-utils which provides an
  init script for saned.  It's disabled by default, but on every boot
  spams the VT with

  
  echo "$NAME disabled; edit /etc/default/saned"

  Looking at how simple the init script and /etc/default/saned are, I would 
contend that this should either:
  1) Be converted to an upstart script that's not enabled by default
  or
  2) Remove the line that tells the user that saned is disabled

Title:
  Remote network scanner is not being detected in "scanimage -L"
  although being published through avahi (karmic)

Bug description:
  The problem is as following: I got a HP 4400c USB Scanner connected to one 
machine (running karmic 64). The scanner is identified (scanimage -L) and used 
(xsane) without a problem. I was also able to make it accessible to another 
machine (also running karmic 64) by configuring saned on the server and 
net.conf on the client, and then solving the udev permissions issue, which 
seems to be mentioned in a few other bug reports - not relevant to this bug (I 
think).
  However, later I tried to make the remote machine detect the remote scanner 
automatically, through avahi - without having the saned server's IP address 
written manually to net.conf on the client machine. That didn't work. I 
verified that saned on the machine with the scanner publishes a proper service 
messahe in avahi - and it does. However neither "scanimage -L"  nor xsane are 
able to detect the remote scanner. 
  So, my question is - is the sane client configured with avahi support at all? 
If not - is that intentional?
  The package I report this bug on is sane-utils (because of scanimage).

There shouldn't be a problem here. The purpose of saned is to share
scanners that are physically attached to the local system, so that
remote systems can use them. If the scanner is already accessible over
the network, a remote system can connect to it without using saned.

/usr/share/doc/sane-utils/README.Debian regarding permissions for
scanner device files and saned in Debian/Ubuntu.

Bug description:
  I have a Brother MFC-L2710DW printer with integrated flatbed scanner.
  There are two major problems when scanning with sane:

  The first problem is that the quality of all scanned images is very
  poor due to 8x8 pixel JPG compression artefacts. The root coarse seems
  to be the backend, as the result is the same independently if the
  image is acquired through xsane or scanimage.

  The second problem is that sane only scans up to 300 dpi. 1200 dpi is
  not offered at all and for 600 dpi the error message "Failed to start
  scanner: Invalid argument" is displayed. Interestingly the message is
  displayed after the scanner has completed the scan, but the data seems
  not to be received or understood by sane.

  The scanner works fine in Ubuntu with the commercial software vuescan,
  which rules out a firmware bug or malfunctioning of the scanner
  itself.

Assuming you are not in the lp or scanner groups, what happens if you
try to use scanimage to scan an image? (See "scanimage --help" for
syntax, and use the device name that appears when you run "scanimage
-L".)

  I am trying to setup saned for remote scanning, but without luck. On
  server side I have allowed 192.168.1.0/24 subnet, but remote host does
  not find a scanner. During investigation I found the following in
  server's logs:

  It looks to me like it is treating the IPv4 to IPv6 converted address as a 
hostname and trying to resolve it, what of course fails. This looks like a bug 
for me. Adding ":::192.168.1.2" to access list does not resolve the problem.

  net.ipv6.bindv6only = 0

  Most of the Epson scanners nowadays are supported by the epson2 backend :

  But the needed udev rules and peson2 config file are not present to
  enable OOTB experience like for HP products.

  How to reproduce :
  - install ubuntu 14.04
  - Plug an epson scanner like the XP-405 ( 0x04b8 0x0898)
  - Launch Simple scan : the scanner is not recognized.

  WORKAROUND: Add in the /lib/udev/rules.d/40-libsane.rules file:
  ATTRS{idVendor}=="04b8", ATTRS{idProduct}=="0898", ENV{libsane_matched}="yes"

  Add in the /etc/sane.d/epson2.conf file:
  usb 04b8 0898
  usb /dev/usbscanner0
  usb /dev/usb/scanner0

  We should enable all those epson models to be plug n play by shipping
  the needed config files like we do for HP.

Yes, that is what I meant by physically logged in.

You shouldn't need to be in the scanner group (or the lp group) in that
case.

If you remove yourself from both of those groups, does this stop
working? If so, what is the output of "sudo scanimage -L"?

This seems like you have more than one process listening for an incoming
connection to saned.

Please see the last three sections of /usr/share/doc/sane-
utils/README.Debian. These each describe a different method of enabling
the daemon (inetd, systemd, or sysvinit). You should only be using one
method.

Note that with inetd or systemd, the saned process is not started until
there is an actual connection. However it will be listening on TCP port
6566. Please check the output of "ss -p -l -t" to see what process(es)
are listening on this port.

Please see the "SETUP" section of
/usr/share/libsane1/doc/README.Debian.gz. You must either be logged into
a physical console on the system (not an SSH/VNC session) - or if you
want to bypass that requirement, you must add the user to the "scanner"
group. This is expected behavior.

(Adding the user to the "lp" group happens to work because your device
is also a printer - but that's technically not the right answer for
scanning.)

If this issue occurs when you are _physically_ logged in, please change
the status back to Confirmed.

Multiple issues were reported upstream regarding USB 3.0. In some cases
this was power management related (placing a USB hub in between the
system and the scanner).

Title:
  USB 1 and USB 2 scanners fail when connected to USB 3 ports

Status in sane-backends package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Plugging a number of USB 1 and USB 2 scanners into the USB 2 port of
  various computers works as expected. Moving the scanners to the USB 3
  port of the same computers causes the scanners to stop working. The
  scanners are recognized by sane-find-scanner, but fail to scan. The
  difference appears to be the USB 2 ports using ehci-pci and the USB 3
  ports using xhci_hcd.

  The problem is becoming more serious as new computers come out with
  only USB 3 ports and no option to disable xhci_hcd in the bios.

  Is there a workaround or fix for this problem?

  releases of Ubuntu.

  Before hardy, there was a udev rules assigning to the "scanner" group
  all the usb devices that appeared to be scanners under comparison to
  the /etc/udev/rules.d/45-libsane.rules.

  Now, that file is no more, and the access to the usb scanners is
  controlled by HAL+Consolekit.

  The result is that only the user who is sitting at the console has
  permission to use the scanner, since the usb devices now get owned by
  root, with a special ACL allowing access to the console user.

  This is a very very wrong thing to do.

  The beauty of sane is that it can work over the network.  But with
  "hardy" it cannot anymore: there is no possibility to set up a scanner
  server.

  Saned is supposed to be run via xinetd as the saned user. But with the 
current setup, the saned user cannot access the scanner, since only the current 
console user and root can. It is not possible to tell xinetd that saned should 
be run as "the current console user". And in fact there might be no current 
console user at all.
  Nor it is possible to tell xinetd that saned should be run as root, because 
this is just too bad from a security point of view.

  What makes the matter worse is that putting the 45-libsane.rules from
  gutsy back in place does not help.

  So, with the current consolekit thing, sane is not sane anymore, and
  can only be run from the console (a la Twain) and not as a server.

  Please, rethink about console kit and scanners.  Consolekit is a very
  desktop-centric thing, assuming that most pluggable peripherals should
  be owned by the person at the console. But this is generally not true
  of anything that can be shared on the network. Things that can be
  shared should be independent from the console user. Please go back to
  treating scanners with a dedicated system user or group owning them.

  veering off into Debian experimental space which the Debian Maintainer

  packages to Xenial and Trusty.  Simple code inspection seems to
  suggest that the Ubuntu delta needs to be rebased and carried over.

Bug description:
  For some days, I observe an annoying lag with my Logitech K380
  keyboard and Ubuntu 20.04.  After a couple of seconds not typing, new
  keystrokes are registered only after 1–2 seconds lag.  From there on,
  I can type without lag, until the next typing pause.

  I seems that the Bluetooth component switches Bluetooth in some sort of 
hibernate after a couple of seconds of not typing, and then it needs 1–2 
seconds to wake up again and process the keystrokes. 
  No keys are missing – they just arrive with a lag.  Probably the keyboard 
buffers them.

  Important: If I listen to music with a Bluetooth headset, I can type
  without *any* problems because the Bluetooth module remains awake due
  to the music transmission.

  The keyboard does not exhibit this issues at my Android tablet.
  Furthermore, I am sometimes lucky can work with the keyboard without
  any lag (and without music).

  In the BIOS settings of the computer, I do not find anything
  Bluetooth-related.

bug?

@David Woodhouse: p11-kit-trust.so only handles CA certificates; it does
not pull in the PKCS#11 security module configuration, which is stored
in the system-wide NSS database. This is required where smart cards are
used (using security modules such as OpenSC, either directly or via the
p11-kit-proxy security module). This was part of the issue reported with
this bug.

As it stands now, the PKCS#11 module configuration still has to be
manually added to every Firefox/Thunderbird profile after the
application is first launched by the user and the NSS databases are
created at that time. Changes to the system-wide NSS database won't
propagate (for example, if the system administrator replaces the CoolKey
module with OpenSC).

  Updating the list of trusted root certificate authorities across all users of 
a system seems requires rebuilding a library. Non-root certificates may 
similarly be impacted.

  update-ca-certificates could be a mechanism  to update the root
  certificates used by firefox.

  On a corporate install of firefox, currently the only options to adding an 
internal root certificate authority are to:
 * Hack it into the user creation script to extract a pre-created profile, 
and update all the existing users profile directory. This bypasses the random 
profile directory creation.
 * Re-compile the shared library (.so) containing the root certificate 
authorities (extra maintenance for dealing with ubuntu package updates).
 * Have every user of the system go through a manual process of adding the 
root certificate (most users don't know how).
 * Use a plugin extension for firefox (do any exist?) that is automatically 
used by all users (can this be done?)
 * Have the root certificate signed at great expense by an external root 
certificate authority already included. CaCert integration would lower the cost 
but that seems far away, and is still an external authority. These root 
certificates also might be limited to a single domain (wildcard certificate?) 
or have other limitations ("low" expiry?, contractual restrictions...).

  It seems unlikely that Mozilla will move away from having the root
  certificates stored in the shared library as it would take some
  control away from them. The shared libary method makes it harder for
  malicious changes to be made, but only by adding the barier of
  recompilation and installation of a shared library.

In the kernel package for Ubuntu, CONFIG_SND_SOC_SOF_INTEL_TOPLEVEL
(introduced in 5.2-rc1) needs to be changed from 'Y' back to its default
value of 'N'. As described by Intel, this option cannot currently be set
together with CONFIG_SND_SOC_INTEL_SST_TOPLEVEL.

Comment #10 indicates this was fixed in OpenSC 0.12.2, which was
released in precise (before it reached end-of-life).

- debian/patches/missing-libs.patch: Add libraries to allow opensc to build
- debian/opensc.docs: include html documentation

- debian/rules: Call autoreconf sequence to rebuild autotools files
- debian/opensc.install: Added profiles
