[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1856997] Re: Nvidia driver is not working / not supported

2019-12-20 Thread Eduardo dos Santos Barretto
Thanks for taking the time to report this bug and helping to make Ubuntu
better. We appreciate the difficulties you are facing, but this appears
to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.
Please feel free to report any other bugs you may find.

libjack-jackd2-0 double close on a failure to connect to jackd which
  causes crashes in multithreaded programs

Status in jackd2 package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed
Status in jackd2 package in Debian:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
After upgrading to Ubuntu 19.04, I started experiencing sporadic
crashes in kodi when turning my AV receiver on. Ubuntu 19.04 upgraded
  alsa-plugins to 1.1.8. For alsa-plugins >= 1.1.7, the ALSA jack plugin
is enabled by default in /etc/alsa/conf.d/50-jack.conf.

The crashes are caused by a race condition when kodi's audio engine
thread is enumerating the ALSA sound devices, and the udev thread is
enumerating the udev devices triggered by the sound device add from
  turning the AVR on.

When enumerating the ALSA jack plugin device, it tries to connect to
connect to jackd. Since I don't have jackd installed, it fails to
connect. libjack closes the socket on error, and then closes it again
in it's cleanup code. Since it's closing the same file descriptor
twice, it interacts with other threads that have potentially opened
file descriptors, and causes the crash.

This same bug could potentially affect other multi-threaded programs
  that enumerate ALSA devices.

  Fix committed upstream:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1833745] Re: [MIR] required new dependency of appstream

2019-07-09 Thread Eduardo dos Santos Barretto
I reviewed lmdb 0.9.23-0ubuntu1 as checked into eoan. This shouldn't be
considered a full audit but rather a quick gauge of maintainability.

lmdb is a software library that provides a high-performance embedded
transactional database in the form a key-value store.

- No CVE History
- Build-Depends
  - debhelper
  - doxygen
- No pre/post inst/rm scripts
- No init scripts
- No systemd units
- No dbus services
- No setuid binaries
- binaries in PATH
  - /usr/bin/mdb_copy
  - /usr/bin/mdb_dump
  - /usr/bin/mdb_load
  - /usr/bin/mdb_stat
- No sudo fragments
- No udev rules
- A couple of tests available in the source code:
  - mtest.c: tests for main DB. It's the only test executed during build
(./mtest && ./mdb_stat testdb)
  - mtest2.c: tests for subDB
  - mtest3.c: tests for sorted duplicated DBs
  - mtest4.c: tests for sorted duplicated DBs with fixed-size keys
  - mtest5.c: tests for sorted duplicated DBs using cursor_put
  - mtest6.c: tests for DB splits and merges
- No cron jobs
- Build logs:
  - Lots of warnings during build, mostly related to doxygen macro definitions
  - The warnings are attached.
- No Processes spawned
- Memory management
  - Lots of dynamic memory allocation and memory copying. In general they look
safe, they are checking for NULL, strings are also NUL terminated and they
are freeing memory after use.
- Lots of File IO
  - some paths come from argv but buffer is allocated dynamically based on
user's input.
- Logging
  - Binaries in path are logging only to stderr
- No Environment variable usage
- No Use of privileged functions
- No Use of cryptography / random number sources
  - srand used in test code
- No Use of temp files
- No Use of networking
- No Use of WebKit
- No Use of PolicyKit
- No significant cppcheck results
- Coverity results
  - Some NULL pointer derefence
  - Some pthread lock not being unlocked
  - Use after free
  - Resource leak
  - Out-of-bounds access
  - I will be forwarding this to upstream to get more feedback if any of them
is a high priority issue.
  - Talked to upstream and they confirmed all are false positives.

The code is well maintained and upstream is responsive.

Security team ACK for promoting lmdb to main.

  Security breach with CRTL+ALT+F7

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
This problem concerns every versions of Ubuntu 18 (Desktop or LTS) :

When I lock my session with the padlock icon, I can open it with
  CRTL+ALT+F7 without password.

This is the step to reproduce the problem:

  - Install Ubuntu 18 (Desktop or LTS) with the default option.
The default windows manager is gnome

  - Install lightdm => the opening window logging will be replaced by
the opening window logging of lightdm

  - Open a session

  - Lock the session with the padlock icon (in the right upper corner,
click on the down arrow and click on the padlock icon)

  - The session seems lock because you can see the opening window
logging wich asks you the password but press on CRTL+ALT+F7 and you
can open the session without password.

Title:
Lock can be circumvented by switching tty when using lightdm

Status in lightdm package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Steps to reproduce (only works on X11, not on wayland):
  1) install lightdm
    a) run "sudo apt install lightdm" on a fresh 18.04 install of ubuntu
    b) switch to lightdm with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3"
    c) reboot to make the login manager switch take effect
  2) log in to your account
  3) click switch user (clicking lock should also work) in the dropdown in the
top right corner
  4) switch to a different tty (ctrl+alt+f2 for example)
  5) switch back to your original tty (with lightdm usally tty 7)

You are now logged back in your account without having to type your
  password.

I have marked lightdm as the vulnerable package because all I had to
do to reproduce the issue was install lightdm with "sudo apt install
lightdm" and then switch to lightdm with "sudo dpkg-reconfigure gdm3"

So I think something should either be changed in lightdm or in dpkg-
  reconfigure.

I have been told that I should be using light-locker instead of dm-tool, but
I have no idea what those things are, or how to switch between them, i'm just
clicking switch user.
The user does not know, and is never informed of the existence of these tools.

Since neither apt, nor dpkg-reconfigure warns me that i should use
lightlocker instead of dm-tool, I think this is still a security
vulnerability, because a user that wants to use lightdm and installs
it by quickly searching online for "how to switch login managers" will
not be informed of this vulnerability.

  Extra info:
ubuntu 18.04 (fully up to date)
  lightdm version 1.26.0-0ubuntu1

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1205384] Re: Lock can be circumvented by switching to console

2018-12-05 Thread Eduardo dos Santos Barretto
Hi smurfendrek,

Please check jarnos comment #89, you need to use light-locker, using dm-tool
for lock is not recommended.
You could also try with other screen lockers program.
Also this is an old bug, if you are still experiencing the problem, please open
a new bug.
I am unsubscribing the security team from this ticket.
If needed please subscribe it again.

to be a "regular" (non-security) bug. I have unmarked it as a security
issue since this bug does not show evidence of allowing attackers to
cross privilege boundaries nor directly cause loss of data/privacy.

  screensaver crashed on wake up

Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Sometimes when the laptop wakes up from hibernation (by opening a
lid), I can immediately see my apps running and I can interact with
them, without any need to input the login password. I perceive this is
a serious security issue which needs to be addressed.

Perhaps the gnome-shell crashed (or the screensaver crashed), but it
shouldn't simply restart without querying for the password.

I have the crash report on my machine, however apport uploaded it
automatically without allowing me to add additional info. Please let
me know how I can track it down.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1797785] Re: heap buffer overflow in ft_font_face_hash of gxps-fonts.c CVE-2018-10733

2018-10-15 Thread Eduardo dos Santos Barretto
** Changed in: libgxps (Ubuntu)
   Status: New => Confirmed

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1797785

Title:
heap buffer overflow in ft_font_face_hash of gxps-fonts.c
  CVE-2018-10733

Status in libgxps package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2018-10733

This issue is fixed in Ubuntu 18.10 and needs to be fixed in at least
  Ubuntu 18.04 LTS.

  https://launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/libgxps/0.3.0-3

  https://salsa.debian.org/gnome-team/libgxps/commits/debian/master

I believe you'll want these commits:

* Cherry-pick
gxps-archive-Ensure-gxps_archive_read_entry-fills-the-GEr.patch
  & gxps-archive-Handle-errors-returned-by-archive_read_data.patch:
  - Fix heap buffer overflow in ft_font_face_hash of gxps-fonts.c
CVE-2018-10733 (Closes: #897954)
* Cherry-pick gxps-images-fix-integer-overflow-in-png-decoder.patch:
  - Fix an integer overflow

This is a bug fix that might not be needed for the security update.
* Cherry-pick
gxps-images-clear-the-error-before-trying-to-load-an-imag.patch:
  - clear an error so that fallback image loading works

Note that there is another reported security issue that appears unfixed:
  https://security-tracker.debian.org/tracker/CVE-2018-10767

It looks like the Debian and Ubuntu security teams have determined
that these 2 CVEs are low priority.
