session, but afterwards, a graphics mode seems to change (I can see
some activity in Xorg.log) and after that I can't see the mouse
pointer anymore. The mouse works, the pointer is just invisible. I can
even use it through VNC, I can see the VNC client showing the pointer
  perfectly too.

This is rendering my computer virtually unusable.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1436039] Re: List of desktop environmets spills off bottom of screen when it is too long - Cannot scroll through list

2015-03-27 Thread Jules Rene-Georges Ferdinand Bertholet
** Description changed:

At the logon screenwhen I boot Ubuntu (Trusty Tahr, 14.04.2 LTS), I am
able to choose from multiple desktop environments by clicking the button
to the right of the user name. I have many desktop environments
installed, though, so this list is so long tha it spills off the bottom
edge of the screen. The absence of a scrollbar, mouse-wheel support, or
the ability to browe the list using arrow keys makes it so that the
desktop environments near the bottom of the list cannot be accessed.

  EDIT:
- This may be the same problem as bug #1068605.
+ This may beis the same problem as bug #1068605, but for a newer ubuntu
version (and with no OK button, just options off the screen).
+
+ The obvious solution would be scrollbar and mousewheel support.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1394394] [NEW] pm-suspend-wakeup-hibernate (aka pm-suspend-hybrid before 3.6)

2014-11-19 Thread Matthias Ferdinand
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04LTS
pm-utils 1.4.1-13ubuntu0.1

before kernel 3.6, pm-suspend-hybrid would do suspend/wakeup/hibernate
(with full power-off).

since kernel 3.6, pm-suspend-hybrid will do suspend-to-both (without full
power-off).
The old functionality is not available any more. At times I would prefer using
the old
method, but pm-utils does not offer it anymore.

Attached patch adds back the old functionality, either by
   - setting SUSPEND_HYBRID_MODULE variable to "suspend_wakeup_hibernate"
in some /etc/pm/config.d- or /etc/pm/pm-suspend.config.d- File
   - invoking /usr/lib/pm-utils/bin/pm-action from a symlink called
pm-suspend-wakeup-hibernate

** Affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

** Tags: hibernate hybrid pm-utils suspend

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1394388] [NEW] pm-suspend not restoring /sys/power/disk with /bin/dash

2014-11-19 Thread Matthias Ferdinand
Public bug reported:

Ubuntu 14.04LTS
pm-utils 1.4.1-13ubuntu0.1

When issuing the pm-suspend command, the scripts set the HIBERNATE_MODE in
/sys/power/disk to "suspend".
There is some shell magic to save the previous setting in variable
HIBERNATE_MODE_SAVE, but this fails under
the default shell /bin/dash (works correctly with /bin/bash).

Effect: if you use pm-suspend once, the effective HIBERNATE_MODE in
/sys/power/disk stays in "suspend", and
any subsequent pm-hibernate will also just do a suspend instead of "platform"
or "shutdown".

** Affects: pm-utils (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1389858] Re: Libreoffice calc 4.2.7-0ubuntu1 not updating references after sort

2014-11-07 Thread Matthias Ferdinand
Hi,

this update broke several of my spreadsheets that I use regularly, and
have been using even back with StarOffice, then OpenOffice and finally
LibreOffice for years. While the Ubuntu patch makes it sort in some way
different from the "New LO way of updating References", it still breaks.

This is a major break/change in functionality on an LTS platform and
just "should not happen(TM)".

For the time being, I have reverted the upgrade and put the libreoffice
packages on hold using apt-mark.

Regards
Matthias

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1309773] Re: Nameless error when switching to NVidia graphics card from Nvidia settings using PRIME profiles on Lenovo IdeaPad y580

2014-05-26 Thread Ferdinand Prantl
I used Nvidia in the discreet mode (BIOS switch) with 12.04. I never
installed bumblebee. I upgraded to 14.04; nvidia-prime was installed
automatically and I was able to switch to Intel in Nvidia Settings. I
logged out, logged in again and Intel worked. I used Nvidia Settings
again to switch back to Nvidia and got the empty error message too. The
following commands didn't help - I still see the empty message and
cannot switch back to Nvidia...

sudo apt-get purge libvdpau-va-gl1 bumblebee* nvidia* bbswitch-dkms
sudo apt-get install nvidia-331 nvidia-settings nvidia-prime bbswitch-dkms

The /var/log/gpu-manager.log contains:

Is nvidia loaded? no
Was nvidia unloaded? no

Title:
Nameless error when switching to NVidia graphics card from Nvidia
settings using PRIME profiles on Lenovo IdeaPad y580

Status in “nvidia-prime” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
  Hello,

  Y580 is an optimus laptop.

I have installed nvidia prime and are using binary driver 331.38.

I open NVidia settings and choose to switch from Intel card to NVidia
one. When I do so (and enter my password), I get an empty error
message box and the display gets back to Intel card.

  The console prints just this:

  "astral@Lenovo-IdeaPad-Y580:~$ nvidia-settings
  ** Message: PRIME: Requires offloading
** Message: PRIME: is it supported? yes

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 923858] Re: Parallel printer over USB "usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev-configure-"

2014-04-24 Thread Ferdinand Haider
The bug appears in very similar manner on Kubuntu14.04 (Trusty Tahr). I tried
all the steps proposed above and also in Bug987485, but without any positive
result. The printer (in my case HP LaserJet 5L), connected via a prolific
usb->parallel converter, prints at most one page (after switching off and on),
then nothing. Printing the cups test page results in a stop after 38%. All the
measure given in the different bug description (lpadmin -p HP_LaserJet_5L -o
usb-unidir-default=true, lpadmin -p HP_LaserJet_5L -o
usb-no-reattach-default=true in all permutations, removing usblp, stopping
cups, cat-ing directly to /dev/usb/lp0) did not help. And - of course - the
printer is switched on, and did work under ubuntu10.04 for years.
Any help is highly appreciated, especially since the bug seems to persist for
several years now. My feeling is, that it has to do with some disturbed
bidirectional communication between printer and computer via the usb-adapter,
but I cannot prove.

Regards

Ferdi

Title:
Parallel printer over USB "usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev-
  configure-"

Status in “cups” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
I am trying to connect my parallel port printer (a Brother HL-1450
mono laser) to my new computer, which has no parallel port. I have
bought a Dynamode Usb To Parallel Printer Cable Box 36pin
(http://www.amazon.co.uk/gp/product/B000PIX8XS) and am so far unable
  to make my printer work.

I have Ubuntu 11.10 installed, and have also tried running Ubuntu
10.04 on a VM, and sharing the USB device with the VM, and had no
  success that way either.

When I click Add Printer in the CUPS web UI I don't see my printer
listed. Under "Local Printers:" I just see "HP Printer (HPLIP)" and
  "HP Fax (HPLIP)".

  $ lsb_release -rd
  Description: Ubuntu 11.10
  Release: 11.10

I enabled the -proposed repository yesterday (2012-01-29) and updated,
having seen comments by Till Kamppeter about various fixes to related-
looking bugs. Before that I tried enabling Till's ppa. Neither of
these seemed to fix the problem I was seeing. In both cases I
rebooted to ensure I was running the right kernel etc.

I have also tried modprobe -i usblp and then adding
parallel:/dev/usblp0 in the CUPS web UI, and this didn't work either.

When I plug in the USB cable connected to the printer (which is
switched on) I get messages like this in dmesg:

[72762.014344] usb 2-1.2: usbfs: USBDEVFS_CONTROL failed cmd udev-
  configure- rqt 161 rq 0 len 1024 ret -110

Please let me know if I can supply any other helpful information or if
I missed something. Thanks for your help.

  ubuntu-bug cups won't work for me - I guess because I am using a
package from -proposed? It says: "The problem cannot be reported:
This is not a genuine Ubuntu package".

Here are the details asked for on
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/DebuggingPrintingProblems. I have followed
the USB printer instructions - please let me know if I should follow
the parallel port version because this is a parallel printer plugged
  in via USB.

Title:
Status indicator shows charging status of mouse battery instead of
  main laptop battery

Status in “gnome-power-manager” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Since I've moved to ubuntu 12.10, the status indicator displays the
charging status of the mouse-battery instead of the charging status of
the main laptop battery. This is irritating, at it continuosly makes
me think my laptop is not connected to the mains and running with
battery power. I would expect the status indicator to show the status
of the laptop battery and only display the status of the mouse battery
if I click on the battery symbol.

The version of gnome-power-manager is 3.6.0-0ubuntu1
  OS: ubuntu 12.10

The mouse battery is recognized as battery_hid_00o14o51oD0o7Co85_battery
The laptop battery is recognized as battery_BAT0
The system is a Lenovo X201s
