[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Forgot to mention: this is with Ubuntu 20.04. And since I upgraded my
main system 14.04->16.04->18.04->20.04 I also confirmed the brokenness
in a VM with a fresh 20.04 setup, just to convince myself that this
issue actually happens out-of-the-box.

Title:
  nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

Status in nautilus-share package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Package libpam-smbpass is removed from 16.04 archives because of bug
  causing segfault.

This makes nautilus-share very confusing since you won't be able to access
the shares if they are set with authentication.
Users might be stuck thinking file sharing simply doesn't work because of
this.
Perhaps nautilus-share should have a dialog explaining that a samba password
has to be set or have it only with guest access for shares unless the issue
with libpam-smbpass is fixed and back in archive.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1554652] Re: nautilus-share broken with libpam-smbpass removed

2020-05-14 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Wow, this is a frustating issue! It took me hours to figure out, simply
because I couldn't believe what most solutions for older Ubuntu releases
told me: it's broken out of the box and I need to fiddle with samba
internals.

Yes a simple "sudo smbpasswd -a myusername" is sufficient to make it work (with
authenticated shares).
But there is no indication whatsoever in the GUI for this! It even proposes to
install samba in the first place!

It unequivocally passes the message "This is a nice GUI and it takes
care of this. No need to worry."

But the exact opposite is the case. IMHO this is worse than having no
GUI. Without a GUI I know that I just have to do a quick google search
and follow some instructions (set up samba...) and all is well in a few
minutes or half an hour. At least it's straightforward.

I'm a seasoned Linux user, but the current GUI sent me in all the wrong
directions. It actively suggests that it takes care of everything, so I
thought it'd be highly counterproductive to get in its way and edit
samba's configuration myself. (Too many cooks...)

I see that there are longstanding technical issues with the connection
to PAM and those may be hard to fix. I totally accept that!

But please, please, at the very least add some tooltip or popup dialog
or text label (or modify an existing one) that informs the user that he
is expected to manually add a samba user!

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1143495] Re: udisks reporting input/output error that seems to be nonsense

2016-07-19 Thread Gilles Schintgen
I tried disabling udisks's checking of SMART attributes: open gnome-
disk-utility ("Disks"), select the SSD, click the "hamburger" icon in
the top right corner, SMART, disable. But unfortunately it is
automatically re-enabled after a reboot.

Is there a workaround?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1072206] Re: [nvidia] Window content is black or transparent

2015-09-04 Thread Gilles Schintgen
Hi,
I wasn't following this bug until today when I thought enough is enough. (It's
been annoying me for quite some time)

I'm skeptical of the "fix released" status, since I am *still*
experiencing the described behaviour: black or transparent windows.

Ubuntu 14.04
compiz 1:0.9.11.3+14.04.20150313-0ubuntu1
nvidia-304-updates 304.125-0ubuntu0.0.2

Thanks to everybody for investigating this non-critical but very
annoying bug!

Bug description:
  [ Impact ]

With nVidia hardware from time to time window content is rendered
black or transparent. The problem manifests more frequently as
  session uptime increases.

Apparently the problem was caused by textures being cached and not
freed, resulting in memory exhaustion conditions. It turns out the
  texture caching is unnecessary anyway.

  [ Test Case ]

Verification requires an nVidia GPU with proprietary drivers. The
problem can not be reproduced at will, only after some time (depending
on resident GPU memory and usage) and even then only randomly and
  unreliably.

  [ Regression Potential ]

It is unlikely this change has the potential to introduce new
  regressions.

  [ Other Info ]

Fix was cherry-picked from the Ubuntu "Vivid Vervet" dev relase where
it has been in use for some weeks without problem.

No scanners were identified. If you were expecting something different,
check that the scanner is plugged in, turned on and detected by the
sane-find-scanner tool (if appropriate). Please read the documentation
which came with this software (README, FAQ, manpages).

$ls -l /dev/bus/usb/001/002

Does this device correspond to my scanner?. Shouldn't it be owned by the
scanner group? (But changing group ownership to scanner doesn't fix the
scanimage -L issue.)

Before the update to 14.04, scanning worked just fine. It's a
regression.

Sorry, I've finally found the issue on my system: /etc/sane.d/snapscan.conf had

Running SANE_DEBUG_SNAPSCAN=128 scanimage -L put me on the right track.
