[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1208218] Re: intermittent left-channel audio distortion

2013-08-13 Thread Gottschalk Klaus
Never mind that -- the problem continues, although turning off auto-mute
seems to have changed the character of the distortion, making it
slightly quieter, and it also made it unresponsive to the "rm -r
~/.pulse ~/.asound* ~/.pulse-cookie" command.

However, I discovered that the left channel is only distorted in the
sound coming out the front headphone jack -- the line-out jack in the
back of the computer case sounds fine.

Title:
  intermittent left-channel audio distortion

Status in “pulseaudio” package in Ubuntu:
  New

Bug description:
Since I installed this version of Ubuntu (Xubuntu 12.04 upgraded to
Ubuntu Studio), I occasionally get crackly or fuzzy distortion in the
  left audio channel.

It doesn't happen completely consistently, but it often happens while
playing Flash videos in Firefox or editing audio in Audacity. It also
happens pretty much every time I try to use Pure Data with JACK, and I
can also replicate it by opening Audacity while using JACK (which will
create distortion in all audio playing through JACK). But JACK doesn't
need to be running at all for the problem to occur.

  Entering this command:
  rm -r ~/.pulse ~/.asound* ~/.pulse-cookie
in the terminal is the only way I can fix the problem, and sometimes it takes
several tries. I also have to restart some open applications after doing that
to get them to play audio again.

  I tried the suggestions on
  https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting , but that didn't
  solve the problem.

2013-08-13 Thread Gottschalk Klaus
I disabled auto-mute mode and am finding it impossible to replicate the
distortion now. Will test further after a reboot and report back, but my
initial impression is that that solved the problem.

Thanks for the responses! I compiled and installed hda-emu, but after
that I'm completely lost regarding how to use it to get the pin-ctls

I haven't finished trying all of your suggestions yet (will post more
results as I go through them), but as for the output of amixer -c0

With the headphones plugged into the front headphone jack:

Is that value something that can be changed by the user, or does it have
to be set by software? Will changing it fix the problem, or is it a
symptom of the actual issue?

to get them to play audio again.

I tried the suggestions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Audio/PositionReporting , but that didn't solve
the problem.

I have PulseAudio 1:1.1-0ubuntu15.3 installed.

Title:
  intermittent left-channel audio distortion
