I found one other soul that has this issue on B590 and it looks like it
is not just a Ubuntu issue. After finding these articles I ran Windows 8
for a couple of days and got one such crash.

Maybe the comments in those forums could help aleviating the problem in
Ubuntu at least.

In the mean time I suppose I will just have to pray that the intel-
linux-graphics-installer is updated to work with 13.10 soon.

In another desperate step I installed the latest Xubuntu and at least
the crashes are limited to one or two per day now.

  I have a Lenovo B590 laptop that crashed occationally with a scrambled
  screen on 13.04 but since I upgraded to 13.10 it crashes a couple of
  times a day and needs to be hard reset or left for a while to reboot
  on its own.

  This error occurs periodically in various application and until now I
  could not see a pattern, but I recently started using teamspeak3 and
  with that application I get at least 3 crashes per hour, a lot of
  times a lot more.

  (As far as I can see the bios is up to date, I downloaded the latest
  bios update from the lenovo website and when I run it it actually
  warns me that it would downlevel the bios if I run the update program
  so I assume that means the version on the laptop is newer.)

  The only proprietry driver used on the laptop is the Broadcom Wireless
  driver.

I did the normal Ubuntu updates today and now both gnome3 and unity is
crashing 3 to 4 times per hour.
