[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1982852] [NEW] software hangs on "checking for updates"
Public bug reported: Gnome software regularly seems to have problems with getting it's updates or handle them properly. It's not clearly reproducible, as sometimes it sems to work. This time, the steps to get there were: * open the gnome software app * see some updates being offered * click on update all * wait a while * return to the computer and see the application saying "checking..." at the top left * wait for 10, 20, 30 minutes - but nothing changes, it keeps trying to fetch some updates, but I dont get any information from where and what and why it takes so long to just look if there are any updates or my installed applications are current There are a bunch of journalctl entries maybe related to that, that I will add in the comments for their size ProblemType: Bug DistroRelease: Ubuntu 22.04 Package: gnome-software 41.5-2 ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 5.15.0-41.44-lowlatency 5.15.39 Uname: Linux 5.15.0-41-lowlatency x86_64 NonfreeKernelModules: nvidia_modeset nvidia ApportVersion: 2.20.11-0ubuntu82.1 Architecture: amd64 CasperMD5CheckResult: unknown CurrentDesktop: ubuntu:GNOME Date: Tue Jul 26 16:20:41 2022 ExecutablePath: /usr/bin/gnome-software InstallationDate: Installed on 2020-04-12 (834 days ago) InstallationMedia: Ubuntu 19.10 "Eoan Ermine" - Release amd64 (20191017) InstalledPlugins: gnome-software-plugin-flatpak 41.5-2 gnome-software-plugin-snap41.5-2 SourcePackage: gnome-software UpgradeStatus: Upgraded to jammy on 2022-04-28 (88 days ago) ** Affects: gnome-software (Ubuntu) Importance: Undecided Status: New ** Tags: amd64 apport-bug jammy -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-software in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1982852 Title: software hangs on "checking for updates" Status in gnome-software package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: Gnome software regularly seems to have problems with getting it's updates or handle them properly. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1977660] Re: Power settings have no effect and offer nonexisting options
I have a thinkpad x1 extreme gen2. I have a bit trouble to exactly understand what I could do with the information from that URL - will try to read it again later with some more time. What I can confirm ist that thermald reports some kind of incompatibility as far as I understand: $ sudo journalctl -b -u thermald.service Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e systemd[1]: Starting Thermal Daemon Service... Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e thermald[1968]: 22 CPUID levels; family:model:stepping 0x6:9e:d (6:158:13) Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e thermald[1968]: [/sys/devices/platform/thinkpad_acpi/dytc_lapmode] present: Thermald can't run o> Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e thermald[1968]: Unsupported cpu model or platform Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e systemd[1]: thermald.service: Deactivated successfully. Jun 08 10:25:34 tp-x1e systemd[1]: Started Thermal Daemon Service. If it should turn out that settings and indicator are unable to change/display the currently used cpu governor, then they probably should not give me the impression they could. Or they should try to do it the same way as studio-controls does, which does it succesfully. Anyway, please let me know if there is anything else I should try to analyse or fix this thing. I will come back and report if I myself find anything, too. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1977660 Title: Power settings have no effect and offer nonexisting options Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: The "power" area of the settings offer three options: powersave, balanced, and performance. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1951698] Re: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved
The output of firefox --version is Mozilla Firefox 97.0 and the package is 97.0+build2-0ubuntu0.21.10.1 amd64 One more thing: I have a bunch of folders in my bookmark taskbar, which means when I pull something out, I need to go back and forth a bit to find a free place where I can drop the icon taken from another folder. When trying a few more times, I succeeded in one of 20 or so cases when I was very quick. So it seems to be either a timing issue or an issue that on a very low level when I'm hovering over another folder on my "way out" to the place where I want to drop the icon the strange effect of "losing the grip" (I hope it's understandable how I describe this) happens... This problem does not exist in X11. There, I can just drag my icon, take all the time I need, let it "travel" over the whole taskbar or even firefox window back and forth until I decide to let the mouse button go so it drops where I just put it to. I also have the general impression that my mouse is a bit faster than on X. But this is really hard to measure exactly and probably not relevant for the issue at hand. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to firefox in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1951698 Title: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved Status in Mozilla Firefox: Invalid Status in firefox package in Ubuntu: Incomplete Bug description: When running firefox on wayland, it appears to be impossible to move bookmark items in the menu bar sub menus. Re: [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1951698] Re: [upstream] under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved
The Bug in the exact way as described originally is gone. I *can* move items *inside* the bookmark toolbar folder up and down. That being said, the handling of bookmark icons and folder still is not "normal" as in X11 sessions! In an X session, I can move Icons also in and out of folders, into subfolders in a taskbar folder, and back again. I can move an Icon from a taskbar bookmark folder directly to the taskbar. Under Wayland I can Move things *inside* a folder, but not back! This is valid from task bar into a main taskbar folder, but not back, and inside a taskbar folder into a subfolder - but not back. On the way back, there is a shortin blinking blue line showing where the icon is about to drop, but before i can let the mouse go to let it drop in that place, the icon goes back into it's original place in the folder. Not sure if I should open a new Bug for that, its probably technically the same area where the bug must hide, and very close to the originally described behaviour, only that up and down works now. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1950925] Re: alt-tab doesnt work anymore after upgrade to 21.10
maybe it is interesting that, before i got it working under wayland as I want it to be, I reverted back for a while to xorg. It was after I got the hints here to uninstall extensions, that I did that, and only then got back to the wayland session. I dont know why it should be, but it could also be that intermittently using xorg might have fixed something, even though it sound strange.+ The information about the extensions is interesting... and strange. People need their desktop environments to do specific things. The need for more extensions is mainly since Gnome made huge changes and introduced gnome-shell, which had many things of the previous gnome missing. So it's natural and also necessary for many users to get that functionality back. I normally dont install obscure extensions from the internet - but the ones I had solved also another problem. The fact that an update resulted in the nextcloud application being not working well anymore. If I install extensions from regular ubuntu packages I am assuming they are fine to use. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1950925 Title: alt-tab doesnt work anymore after upgrade to 21.10 Status in gnome-shell package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: I want to swicth windows with alt-tab. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1952539] Re: Power Mode keeps switching back to balanced afert performance is selected manually
I looked into some more things to get this solved. While the Setting application says my power mode - the one it keeps getting back too despizte I chose another is "balanced", looking into the system it tells mie it's on powersafe: $ cat /sys/devices/system/cpu/*/cpufreq/scaling_governor powersave ... (repeated with one line like this for each cpu core i have) Looking at cpufreq-info, it tells me there is not "balanced" option: $ /usr/bin/cpufreq-info cpufrequtils 008: cpufreq-info (C) Dominik Brodowski 2004-2009 Report errors and bugs to cpuf...@vger.kernel.org, please. analyzing CPU 0: driver: intel_pstate CPUs which run at the same hardware frequency: 0 CPUs which need to have their frequency coordinated by software: 0 maximum transition latency: 4294.55 ms. hardware limits: 800 MHz - 4.80 GHz available cpufreq governors: performance, powersave current policy: frequency should be within 800 MHz and 4.80 GHz. The governor "powersave" may decide which speed to use within this range. current CPU frequency is 4.43 GHz. So I wonder what the balanced option is about, if it's not reflected on the system, but despite that the system keeps going back to it. I read the ubuntu help pages about the power mode, and it says these options in the setting application should do what they look like. But I cant confirm this. It ignores my choices, and reverts back to a setting that doesn't event seem to be known to the system. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-control-center in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1952539 Title: Power Mode keeps switching back to balanced after performance is selected manually Status in gnome-control-center package in Ubuntu: New Bug description: I want my computer to keep running in performance mode. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1951698] Re: under wayland items in menu bar sub-menus cannot be moved
Additional information/research: In the "manage bookmarks" window, it appears to work fine to move the items to the positions i want them to be. Most of the time this works as expected, but sometimes they dont land exactly where I placed them (as indicated by the line that appears as soon as they are in dragging mode). It was marked as broken in the gnome extensions management tool but also turned off. I removed it additionally. After logging out and back in, alt-tab worked again. After installing gnome-shell-extensions back, logging out and in again, it worked, too. So, to me it looks like I dont have that problem anymore, thanks! Probably gnome shell should be somehow more robust so and outdated extension that is even recognized as such and disabled whouldn't break other unrealted functionality, but I guess that's hard to debug. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1932328] Re: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows
I have this problem too. The real problem for me is less the dots staying in place, but alt-tab not working anymore. With so many people being affected - did anybody find a workaround other than not using wayland or logging in and out? Is there anything people not deeply into Gnome and/or thunderbird development can do to help it getting solved? I tried to kill and get gnome-shell reloaded, as I used to to before sometimes, but that just leads to the whole gnome-shell going down and not coming up again, as far as I understand this is related to using Wayland, where killing gnome shell and having it restart automatically seems not to be supported. -- You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop Packages, which is subscribed to gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock in Ubuntu. https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/1932328 Title: Thunderbird under Wayland does not correctly close (or manage) windows Status in Mozilla Thunderbird: New Status in gnome-shell-extension-ubuntu-dock package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Status in thunderbird package in Ubuntu: Confirmed Bug description: Using Ubuntu 21.04 (Hirsute) that starts in Wayland, by default. Thunderbird version: 78.11.0 with "gnome-support" package. Same problem in safe mode. Description: By default in this context, TB is a Wayland task. When opening a compose windows (or reply or transfer), sending mail apparently close the windows, but gnome shell continue to show multiple "points", as if multiple windows are still active. And after closing TB, it seems maintained in the same state, so it becomes impossible to relaunch it from the desk. But task manager of "looking glass" does not show it and it is possible to launch from terminal. Provisional solution: Modify .desktop file to launch with --display=:0 option, that force to use XWayland interface, as shown by xlsclients (for example). But it is actually a bug under Wayland context, that also badly interfer with many add-ons or extensions. [Desktop-packages] [Bug 1935074] [NEW] Plugins cease to work due change in plugin loading and key shortcuts handling
Public bug reported: One example: Thunderbird cannot anymore handle the "s" key shortcut as expected(handing it over to the Nostalgy++ plugin for doing what it does when receiving this key) and as it worked before the update. The developer write: "Attention for TB 78.11: on TB loading, TB first sets Nostalgy keys, and after that, it sets its own TB keys, overwriting the keysetting of Nostalgy. In earlier versions of TB, TB did wait with loadiing of addons until TB itself was ready. That means after TB start, out of the box, the keys do not work. There is a workaround: open TB addons page (tools-> addons), deactivate Nostalgy++ with the blue slider switch, then reactivate Nostalgy++. Now it sets its key after TB is ready and they stay until the next restart." IMHO It's not good to introduce such a major functionality and API behaviour change with a minor version update labelled as security.
