Bug description:
  [Impact]

Changes in gnome-settings-daemon v. 42 resulted in IM issues in GNOME
on Xorg. On Ubuntu the effect is that the candidate window is
misplaced, and appears at the bottom of the application window instead
of close to the cursor. It's an annoying enough issue to justify an
  SRU.

  [Test Plan]

  On an updated Ubuntu 22.04:

  1. Install ibus-libpinyin

  2. Run these commands:

 sudo locale-gen zh_CN.UTF-8
 sudo update-locale LC_CTYPE=zh_CN.UTF-8

  3. Reboot and log in to an Ubuntu on Xorg session

  4. Add "Intelligent Pinyin" to the input sources

  5. Open gedit, switch to "Intelligent Pinyin", and input something.

=> Find that the candidate window is misplaced.

  6. Install gnome-settings-daemon{,-common} from jammy-proposed and
 reboot

  7. Repeat step 5.

=> Find that the candidate window is shown close to the cursor as
 expected.

  [Where problems could occur]

The change is an upstream MR and a one-liner. It shouldn't reasonably
affect anything but ibus configuration, and I have successfully tested
it back and forth in both x11 and wayland sessions.

  [Other Info]

This change has not yet reached kinetic, but will do so later when
g-s-d is upgraded. The issue has temporarily been addressed in Debian
(and soon in kinetic via sync) through an im-config workaround, which
will be dropped later when g-s-d is updated. But for an SRU I think
it's better to make the more proper g-s-d change directly.

  [Original description]

I know it is not im-config issue. I don't know what is root cause.

  how to reproduce:
  1. Install Ubuntu 22.04 LTS or apply newest update
  2. boot
  3. select a user
  4. select Ubuntu on Xorg
  5. input password
  6. login
  7. run gedit
  8. push Hankaku/Zenkaku key
  9. input any keys
  10. lookup table appears bottom left of application

Sorry for late reply.

> Do you understand what their intention actually is?
It is too difficult question for me. I don't understand "the gtk-im-module
setting can be considered in full control of the user." is mean.
We may consider to revert c8981ef0b1e915e89c79e301080541baef0f9fa9 just like
keyboard-Use-ibus-sources-from-locale.patch for gnome-settings-daemon.

> Is GTK_IM_MODULE unset there?
GTK_IM_MODULE is set by anyone (imchooser?).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1969637] Re: lookup table appears bottom left of application

2022-04-21 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
Hi Gunnar, thank you for your testing!

It is my current analysis:
It must be caused by bottom two commits.

https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/commit/e2d268eb00f06f497b2f62ae9f3b6e7e1fe4bd9e
https://gitlab.gnome.org/GNOME/gnome-settings-daemon/-/commit/c8981ef0b1e915e89c79e301080541baef0f9fa9

$ gsettings get org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-im-module
''
$ gsettings set org.gnome.desktop.interface gtk-im-module 'ibus'

This command works as expected immediately.
But according to commit messages, it is not intended for GNOME 42.

And I don't know why Fedora 36 works so great.

IBus 1.5.25 introduces systemd user unit files.
  /usr/lib/systemd/user/org.freedesktop.IBus.session.GNOME.service
  /usr/lib/systemd/user/org.freedesktop.IBus.session.generic.service

https://github.com/ibus/ibus/blob/master/bus/services/org.freedesktop.IBus.session.GNOME.service.in#L21
  It may be bashism.
- It changes to "ExecStart=bash -c '/usr/bin/ibus-daemon --panel disable $([[

Thank you for your comments!

> However to reproduce this behaviour, you need to reboot on twice, isn't it?
Yes. You are right. Always right.

> It would be good if any of you could submit an upstream GNOME issue.
I think it is not mutter or gnome-shell issue but ibus-mozc issue.
ibus-mozc should work under wayland session.
Latest Mozc renderer was completely re-written.
https://github.com/google/mozc/commit/3b3068e924e17f8820a35899f105f2ef838d0535
I will try it later.

Title:
Without sudo, system-config-printer freeze when changing printer
  driver

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Distribution: Ubuntu MATE 20.04.1 LTS.
  System-config-printer version: 1.5.12-0ubuntu1.1

If I run system-config-printer by clicking Menu -> Administration ->
Printers, the system-config-printer will be run without prompting for
my user password, mean without using sudo. I can install the printers
successfully without any issue. But, when changing the driver, system-
  config-printer will freeze.

Here are the steps to reproduce the issue:

  1. Run system-config-printer by clicking Menu -> Administration -> Printers.
You will not be prompted to enter any password.
  2. Install any printer.
  3. Close system-config-printer.
  4. Run system-config-printer again by repeating step 1 above, clicking Menu
-> Administration -> Printers.
  5. Right click on any installed printer, then click properties. Printer
properties will be shown.
  6. In printer properties, click the "change" button located at the right side
of "Make and Model" text field. The "change Driver" dialog will occur.
  7. In "Change Driver" dialog, by default, "Select printer from database" will
be choosen automatically. Do not do anything, and just wait for a few seconds.
Another dialog occur, showing "Searching for drivers".
  8. Wait for a few minutes, you will see nothing happen. System-config-printer
will continue to hang/freeze.

  There is a workaround.

  Steps for workaround:

  1. Exit system-config-printer if it is still running. If the
system-config-printer still hang or freeze, use system monitor to kill it.
  2. Run terminal.
  3. In terminal run system-config-printer by using command "sudo
system-config-printer". You will be prompted to enter your user password.
  4. Enter your user password, then press the Enter key.
  5. In system-config-printer, right click on any installed printer, then click
"properties". Printer properties will be shown.
  6. In printer properties, click the "change" button located at the right side
of "Make and Model" text field. The "change Driver" dialog will occur.
  7. Wait for the "Searching for drivers" dialog to appear and disappear, list
of printer brands will be shown.
  8. You can proceed to follow on screen instructions to change the driver.

  Please fix this issue.

If changing printer driver require sudo, system-config-printer should
  prompt for my password.

20.04 - Printer Change Driver window becomes unresponsive

Status in system-config-printer package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
User yetanotherbryan from Ubuntu Forums has reported on this since May
2020, and I've also experience this bug this week when I upgraded to
  20.04.

Unable to Change Printer Driver in Ubuntu 20.04
  (https://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=2444046)

I'm trying to get my printer setup on a fresh
install of 20.04. In setttings, when I add my
network printer (Samsung M287X), it is found
and installs a default driver. I am able to print
normally. I trying to swap out the printer driver
("Additional Printer Settings" > "Properties" >
"Make and Model -Change") to install alternative
drivers. This is necessary to enable some features
such as two sided printing. When I click "Change"
it attempts to search for drivers but comes
unresponsive. This is something that I have done
many times on previous versions of ubuntu. Anybody
have an idea of what is happening here?

  Thanks,

  Bryan

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1827451] Re: Japanese new era "Reiwa(令和)" support

2019-05-15 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
> Is this really a sufficient test case?

Yes."R" means "令和".

If you want to show "令和1年5月1日", they should be

 5. Set “Format" to "平成11年12月31日"
 6. Cell should show "令和1年5月1日" (not "Naruhito1年5月1日”or "平成31年5月1日")

Bug description:
Japanese new era "Reiwa(令和)" has began at 2019-05-01.
These patches add Reiwa support for Libreoffice Bionic/Xenial.

  ProblemType: Bug
  DistroRelease: Ubuntu 18.04
  Package: libreoffice (not installed)
  ProcVersionSignature: Ubuntu 4.18.0-18.19~18.04.1-generic 4.18.20

  [Impact]

   * This effects all users who use the Japanese era date format in
  LibreOffice.

   * The fix is currently in LibreOffice 6.2.3 on eoan.

  [Test Case]

   1. Start Calc
   2. Put "01/05/2019" into a cell
   3. Right-click on the cell and select "Format Cells"
   4. Set “Language" to "Japanese"
   5. Set “Format" to "H11.12.31"
   6. Cell should show "R1.05.01" (not "N1.05.01”)

  [Regression Potential]

   * The fix is minor so potential for regression is low.

   * A combination of autopkgtests and manual testing as described above
should provide reasonable confidence that no regressions sneaked in.

Title:
ip4 static routes added in NetworkManager UI fail and prevent
  connection

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  lsb_release -rd:
  Description: Ubuntu 16.04.1 LTS
  Release: 16.04

Network Settings package version in Software Center:
  15.04.0+16.04.20160705-0ubuntu1

Prior to upgrading to 16.04 LTS I was running 14.04 LTS. Using the
"Edit Connections..." menu option I had created a custom Ethernet
connection that had some custom routes added. These routes are
required for me to connect to certain resources on a local network
while using Wifi for basic internet. (Physical network locked down, no
  Internet access available)

I've attached a screenshot showing the routes. These routes were
working great in 14.04 (And prior releases of Ubuntu).

However, upon upgrading to 16.04, I noticed this connection would no
longer "connect". It would just silently fail. I noticed that if I
deleted my custom routes, it would work, but I need those in order to
connect to my required network services.

When I try to connect with the routes in place, the connection
silently fails in the NetworkManager UI (I get no error message in the
UI) but I took a look at syslog and found these:

  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:
[1470057319.7268] platform-linux: do-add-ip4-route[2: 10.104.0.0/16 0]: failure

  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:

  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:

failure 101 (Network is unreachable)
  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:

'config-failed') [70 120 4]
  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:
[1470057319.7289] device (enp0s31f6): Activation: failed for connection

  Aug 1 08:15:19 jeremy-ThinkPad-X1-Carbon-4th NetworkManager[2868]:
[1470057319.7309] device (enp0s31f6): state change: failed -> disconnected
(reason 'none') [120 30 0]

Now, if I remove the custom routes from the UI, then I can connect. I them
manually add the routes using the "ip" command:

  sudo /sbin/ip route add 10.104.0.0/16 dev enp0s31f6
  sudo /sbin/ip route add 10.105.0.0/16 dev enp0s31f6
  sudo /sbin/ip route add 10.51.35.0/24 dev enp0s31f6
  sudo /sbin/ip route add 10.140.76.0/24 dev enp0s31f6

This is able to add the routes successfully. So there has to be some
problem in the new implementation of NetworkManager in 16.04, because
these routes worked in 14.04 and they still work in 16.04 if I just
manually add them from the command line.

For now I can work around this issue by manually adding these routes
from the command line every time I connect.

Status in gnome-session package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Currently these variable settings are hardcoded in gnome-session:

  QT_IM_MODULE=ibus
  XMODIFIERS=@im=ibus

That way the use of alternative IM frameworks, for instance fcitx, is
prevented. gnome-session should drop those variable assignments, and
  rely on im-config instead.

As discussed in bug #1439006, we would like to use fcitx-mozc as

This would need to be conducted in the following steps:

  1. Strip src:mozc's dependency, by dropping uim and possibly zinnia/tegaki
support.

  3. Switch to fcitx-anthy in language-selector, and demote anthy related

Title:
Keyboard shortcut for layout switching works in Unity but not in
  Gnome-Flashback

Status in im-config package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in language-selector package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Committed

Bug description:
My keyboard layout is "us,gr", and the new Gnome way to switch between them
is by pressing "Super+Space".
  This works fine in:
   * Gnome-Flashback (Metacity) 14.04
   * Unity 14.04
   * Unity 15.10

  It doesn't work in:
   * Gnome-Flashback (Metacity) 15.10

I've tested with the 15.10 default (Unity) installation, selecting
Greek language in ubiquity, and adding gnome-flashback after the
  installation.

Just for reference, here are my related gsettings:
  $ gsettings list-recursively org.gnome.desktop.input-sources
  org.gnome.desktop.input-sources show-all-sources false
  org.gnome.desktop.input-sources per-window false
  org.gnome.desktop.input-sources current uint32 1
org.gnome.desktop.input-sources sources [('xkb', 'us'), ('xkb', 'gr')]

My Xubuntu 15.10 with latest updated does not start fcitx automatically.
But reverting to im-config 0.29-1ubuntu5, fcitx works great.
Maybe something is wrong.

According to this fix, every flavors must be "IM_CONFIG_DEFAULT_MODE=xim".
Is it intentional?

I don't have any modification about locales after the installation.
I am sure that LightDM persists wrong language value. And I know that LANGUAGE
and GDM_LANG not set by GDM and SDDM.

As discussed in bug #1439006, we would like to use fcitx-mozc as
default ja_JP input method, replacing the dated anthy back-end.

This would need to be conducted in the following steps:

  1. Strip src:mozc's dependency, by dropping uim and possibly zinnia/tegaki
support.
  2. MIR for the stripped version of mozc.
  3. Switch to fcitx-anthy in language-selector, and demote anthy related

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1439006] Re: Install Fcitx for Japanese users

2015-06-13 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
@aron, yes, it is true that Mozc conversion engine is the *best* for Japanese
input.
I always use Mozc instead of Anthy.
Mozc is default conversion engine on Ubuntu Japanese Remix which is our team is
released.
Anthy is stopped to develop for a long time.

But I think it is hard to pass MIR because Mozc has a lot of dependency.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/wily/mozc

So I think libkkc is *better* than Anthy and it is not difficult to pass MIR
rather than Mozc.
http://packages.ubuntu.com/source/wily/libkkc

fcitx-kkc is now in menters.debian.net as you know.
https://mentors.debian.net/package/fcitx-kkc

Thanks,

  Connection or Remmina.

  [Regression Potential]
This patch adds an additional check for modmask. It is already in upstream
metacity.

WORKAROUND: Applications > System Tools > System Settings > Keyboard >
Shortcuts > Disable all shortcuts containing the Super key.

WORKAROUND: Don't use the .xsession file with tightvncserver, but this
then creates a shared desktop experience, instead of ones own, not
seen by the user at the local console.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1439006] Re: [FFe] Install Fcitx for Japanese users

2015-04-02 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
1. Most of Japanese users already use Fcitx because of using our remix.
2. Some Ubuntu flavors does not depend on IBus. Users should install IBus or
Fcitx individually.
So, these changes are huge benefits and low risk, I think.

mature projects, but Fcitx is better suited to Chinese users than IBus
is, and is already the default in Ubuntu Kylin. IBus is increasingly
moving in the direction of removing features upstream like tracking
input state on a per-context basis. Also, the leading input method
provider in China with more than 300 million users, Sogou, only
supports Fcitx under Linux. Skinning support is non-existent in IBus.

We've added support for Fcitx on the same level as IBus in Unity, so
this FFe is a proposal to make Fcitx the default for Chinese locales
this cycle, as a transition towards making Fcitx the default for all
users next cycle. The changes should simply be seeding Fcitx and its
related packages on the CD image, as well as possible changes to im-
config. Those who have explicitly selected IBus as their chosen input
method should be unaffected; these changes will only affect new users,
and users who have never explicitly chosen an input method framework
  in their language settings.

Also, this FFe propose to make language-selector to install more input
method packages for Chinese users to their Fcitx equivalents
(currently IBus) when adding/completing Chinese language support.

@Aron
I send a mail to ubuntu-desktop@l.u.c.

I understand your opinion. You are correct. Status bar is outdated.
I don't know about OS X, but GNOME Shell shows IM status instead of IM icon.
Please see attached screenshot.
If fcitx-qimpanel implemented the same look, Japanese users will be happy.
(Of course I don't like this style, I hope to show the status bar at right
bottom on the Desktop. Yes, I know this is old-fashioned opinion.)

2015-03-21 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
@Aron, I've finished to translate fcitx-qimpanel and test it in a short time.
fcitx-qimpanel does not suit on Japanese environment, I think.
Because it does not have status panel. Japanese IM like Anthy or/and Mozc have
own IM status, e.g. direct input, Hiragana mode, and so on. And users can not
recognize their status without status panel or click on indicator icon.
Also I cannot test it on Virtualbox VM due to an OpenGL issue. Is it another
issue?

I will write a mail to ubuntu-desktop@l.u.c. It is hard for me to talk
on IRC.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1363150] Re: [FFe] Fcitx input method integration in Unity

2014-09-04 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
We, Japanese loco team, release the own remix.
It makes Fcitx by default as same as Ubuntu Kylin.
I think Japanese users prefer to use Fcitx.
So im-config's modification is not good for us

Status in “unity-settings-daemon” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
Fcitx is being included in main, but Unity lacks support for it in
  various ways:

  - The Text Entry panel in unity-control-center has no effect on Fcitx' engine
list
  - Per-window source options in Text Entry panel don't affect Fcitx
  - Fcitx engines (specifically for keyboard layout) are not available under
unity-greeter
  - Fcitx indicator isn't available under the lock screen, only
indicator-keyboard
  - Keyboard layout switching shortcut behaviour provided by Unity and
unity-settings-daemon doesn't change Fcitx' current IM
  - Fcitx indicator is missing some options that are normally provided by
indicator-keyboard
  - Running indicator-keyboard and Fcitx concurrently is redundant as
indicator-keyboard only works with Xkb layouts and IBus IMs

Some of the changes we need:

  - Add support for Fcitx input sources to unity-settings-daemon,
unity-control-center, indicator-keyboard
  - Customize the Fcitx indicator under Unity to show some menu options that
are available in indicator-keyboard (already merged upstream)
  - Hide indicator-keyboard in the session when Fcitx' indicator is visible
  - Add D-Bus property to Fcitx API for the current IM, so that we can detect
when the user changes the current IM in the Fcitx indicator, and update the
current input source accordingly (already merged upstream)
  - Use indicator-keyboard icons for keyboard layouts in Fcitx and
fcitx-qimpanel when running under Unity

We have a PPA that includes most of the proposed changes. It is
  available at https://launchpad.net/~fcitx-team/+archive/ubuntu/fcitx-
transition. It does not hide indicator-keyboard in the session yet, as
having both indicators visible is helpful for testing purposes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1073949] Re: system-config-printer found the suitable printer driver for EPSON printer, but can't install

2014-03-13 Thread Ikuya Awashiro
I tried on 14.04, and I could confirm this issue.
Due to this log, it seems to find an old driver.

Title:
system-config-printer found the suitable printer driver for EPSON
  printer, but can't install

Status in “system-config-printer” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
In Ubuntu, very few (EPSON only I know) printer vendor supports automatic
driver download feature.
When I tried the feature with EPSON PX-503A in Oneiric and Precise, it worked
fine.
But I also tried my new Quantal system, s-c-p seems to found correct the
printer driver (see attached screenshot), but not installed when I press
"Forward" button; nothing happens and no driver package is downloaded or
installed.

  Reproduce Process:

  1. In s-c-p, click "add" button and select the network printer EPSON PX-503A.
  2. Ubuntu says "looking for the drivers...," then attached screenshot is
appeared. It seems correct.
  3. Press "Forward" button.

  Expected Result:

  - The found driver package will be downloaded and automatically
installed, then we can select the right PPD in s-c-p.

  Current Result:

  - Nothing happens, and s-c-p says select "Generic" PPD.

I'm not sure which module has a problem (s-c-p or ubuntu-driver), sorry if my
choose of the package is wrong.

about 5 seconds or more for my custom background to be drawn and Unity

This is particularly funny under gnome-session-flashback, since the
panels load quite fast (I can launch applications and stuff), but the
indicators and background take a really long time to load. I can see
indicator-keyboard and indicator-messages, but not the others. I
cannot right click on the desktop and Startup Applications haven't

  With:

Title:
Avoid conflicting Space shortcut with g-s-d

Status in “ibus” package in Ubuntu:
  Fix Released
Status in “ibus” source package in Saucy:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  [Impact]
Now we are using Space as the shortcut of switching IME forward, and
the shortcut is handled twice: first in g-s-d and then in ibus. This leads to a
conflict and the shortcut does not really work.

  [Test Case]
  Old behavior:
Press Space does not have any effect of changing the IME forward.

  Expected behavior:
After installing the updated package, user removes ibus configuration files
in ~/.config/ibus and ~/.cache/ibus, and re-login to the system, Space
should work for people who are using Unity or GNOME Shell.

  [Regression Potential]
IBus may still push notification message about Space as the shortcut
for users of other desktop, but the shortcut in effect would be Space
when there is no other program grabbing the key press (like what g-s-d does).

It is good solution for Ubuntu. And this does not affect on Ubuntu GNOME.
But Kubuntu/Xubuntu/Lubuntu etc affect this fix. Users may get into a mess.

I'm running Ubuntu 12.10 inside a VirtualBox 4.2RC2 VM, and Ubuntu
doesn't recognise the 3d drivers so it is falling back to llvmpipe.

When I move the mouse around, it sometimes vanishes completely, and
sometimes jumps over to the left or top left of the screen. If I'm
moving a window with the mouse at the time, the window vanishes or
jumps over to the left or top left as well.
