[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2049976] [NEW] multiscreen one display goes black on resume

2024-01-20 Thread James Cobban
Public bug reported:

Starting a few weeks ago after applying regular maintenance to 22.04.3
LTS one of my two displays, an LG 22MP47HQ-P connected to my tower by a
D-Sub cable, blinked multiple times immediately on resume from suspend.
My second display which is connected using HDMI works normally. This, of
course, was merely a mild annoyance because after a few seconds it
stopped. However in the past week that same display flashes on, and then
goes black. I power the display off and back on and again it flashes on
for a fraction of a second and then goes black. After several power
cycles of the display it stays on, so again this is only a mild
annoyance. Is this a known issue with a recent update?

Specifically this is after a deep suspend, one where on unlock you need
to press a key to get the login prompt.

I tried updating to 23.10 but the problem is there as well.

This bug tool does not permit reporting a problem against Wayland.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1839380] Re: Nautilus freezes when restoring files and a copy already exists

2020-08-17 Thread James Cobban
When I opened my laptop today the delete key stuck. Since the active
window was displaying the directory of my home folder EVERY SINGLE FILE
AND DIRECTORY was deleted. Now they are all in the trash but whenever I
try to recover from trash it hangs and the only way out is to power off
the laptop. I would appreciate some idea of how I can recover all of my
files from trash.

Nautilus freezes when restoring files and a copy already exists

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
I have trashed the hidden file using nautilus to the trash bin, be it
the hidden configuration file for XScreenSaver that is compiled from
source, and it regenerated the hidden file in the same location that I
have deleted the old copy in.

I attempted to restore the file, but because the file with the same
name is originated on the same location, Nautilus freezes. It should
give me the "Replace file with newer version" dialog so I can decide
if I want to replace the old file with the new one, or if I want to
rename the trashed hidden file to another name. It shouldn't freeze.

Here's the clearer example. Suppose that...

  1. I created a file named "test.txt" on "/home/eofla",
  2. I put it to the trash bin,
  3. I repeated Step 1, and
  4. I attempted to restore the same file that was on the trash.
  5. Nautilus freezes.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1660574] Re: IPv4 Address Lost 8 Days After Previous DHCP Allocation

2018-05-03 Thread James Cobban
I had this issue yesterday on 17.10. The IPV4 address for my Ethernet
interface vanished. I could not find any option in the network portion
of settings to ask the DHCP for the IP address, and sudo service
network-manager restart did not recover, so I rebooted the system. This
is obviously an extremely rare situation and I do not know how to
reproduce it. If there is no notification that the network manager can
register for to detect this situation automatically then there should be
a reinitialize button in the network settings GUI.

Title:
IPv4 Address Lost 8 Days After Previous DHCP Allocation

Status in network-manager package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
My Ubuntu 16.04 desktop frequently loses the IPv4 address on its wired
ethernet connection to my office's network. This happened this
morning and previously happened 8 days ago.

The network uses a Windows Small Business Server as its main Active
Domain Domain Controller which includes a DHCP service. There are
several other Ubuntu 16.04 machines on the network that do not seem to
experience this issue. This is an IPv4 only network, no IPv6 services
are configures and IPv6 is disabled on most machines.

My PC has two wired network ports. One connects to the office network
and uses DHCP to get an IPv4 address. The other connects to a switch
on my desk that has test equipment connected to it and uses a static
  IPv4 address.

  I have the output from:
   ll /var/lib/NetworkManager
   nmcli -p c
   nmcli -p c show TN\ Wired
Taken; after the renewal of the address eight days ago, this morning before I
"Disconnect"ed the connection from the drop down menu and after I reconnected
and an IPv4 address was re-acquired. If any of this would be helpful, please
let me know and I shall post it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1574862] [NEW] CUPS attached printer always paused

CUPS network printing has not worked for several weeks now. I can print
to the printer from the system it is physically attached to by USB; the
printer shows as Idle-ready to print. But from another computer on the
same LAN the printer shows as paused and all of the print jobs as held.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1530023] [NEW] USB Mouse doesn't work after suspend

2015-12-29 Thread James Cobban
Public bug reported:

My laptop suspended because the lid was closed while the laptop was not
connected to the power supply. After resume the USB mouse no longer
worked and I had to use the trackpad. I tried plugging the USB dongle
into other ports but this did not resolve the issue. I had to reboot
the system.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1477330] [NEW] open new folder in tab should put new tab on top

2015-07-22 Thread James Cobban
Public bug reported:

In the files menu if the user selects the option to open a folder in a
new tab it seems obvious to me that the user wants to immediately start
working in that folder. However the new folder is opened behind the
current folder, so the user must explicitly select the new folder to
work on. I cannot think of any logical situation in which after opening
a new folder the user would prefer to continue working in whatever
random folder currently happens to be on top. I cannot find any tweak
that controls this behavior.

James Cobban, thank you for taking the time to report this bug and

 Status: New = Invalid

The only reason I got this problem was because I followed explicit
instructions from the kernel group to install the 3.18-rc5 kernel. Now
my graphics is screwed up. Even removing the 3.18-rc5 kernel has not
fixed that. Your team created this problem, so I would appreciate some
assistance at fixing it.
