[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1612367] Re: [Touch] Incoming call gets silent randomly

2016-11-17 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Andrea, Anupam, Robie: That's interesting indeed and might explain why
I've never been able to reproduce this myself. I would always have been
actively engaged with the phone when trying to reproduce this.

Bug description:
I've experienced this strange issue 4-5 times after OTA-12. It seems pretty
random and is hard to reproduce.
When I get an incoming call, the screen turns on, the incoming call pop up
appears, but there is no sound at all even though the phone is not in silent
mode (and also the speaker volume is not set too low). I can accept this call
and keep conversing as usual.
Once I asked the same caller to call me once again after a few minutes, that
time the phone rang as expected.

  Device: E5, OTA-12, stable channel

I can provide necessary logs if this happens again. Which ones should
  I gather?

  Possibly related to bug #1614943.

UPDATE: As mentioned in comment #7, it seems the phone rings for a
fraction of a second and then the sound pauses abruptly.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1612367] Re: [Touch] Incoming call gets silent randomly

2016-11-14 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Andrea: media-hub manages the playback state of nearly all playback
sessions on Ubuntu Touch. It utilizes pulseaudio for the sound server.
Any sounds coming from the web browser or web apps do not use media-hub.
Ringtone and notification sounds all go through media-hub for playback.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1612367] Re: [Touch] Incoming call gets silent randomly

2016-10-04 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Pat: I was looking into this a bit more the other day, reading the
attached logs. This no longer seems like a media-hub issue and instead
seems more like an issue at one of the higher software layers. If you
look at the time in the media-hub logs where Anupam has stated it
happened to him, you'll see media-hub try to play the ringtone and then
in less than 1 second it pauses it. It won't pause it itself so that
means it's most likely a bug at the controlling layer above the media
stack.

2016-09-21 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Anupam: sorry to hear that you're still experiencing this issue. It's
been a difficult one to pin down indeed. I've yet to reproduce the same
symptoms that you're experiencing. That being said, if you can continue
to try and notice much more precise times that it occurs and document
those here, that will greatly help in us being able to reproduce this
issue and come up with a confident fix.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544477] Re: No sound notification for new SMS (Ubuntu Touch)

2016-08-22 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Alfonso: well it is *a* cause but not necessarily all causes. I knew
that this was reproducible if you killed media-hub-server or it crashed
on its own and I did take care of several cases of unhandled exceptions
that would cause media-hub-server to crash. Having said that, ahayzen is
working on a QML wrapper that will automatically restore a new Player
connection to media-hub-server after it has restarted along with some
basic state such as the Playlist items. We might be able to create a
similar thing in C++ that wraps QMediaPlayer so that it could be used by
all platform supported playback sessions. Doing the restoration from
qtubuntu-media just wasn't really possible given how QtMultimedia is
written.

2016-08-19 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Anupam: with OTA-12 you already have the fix for bug #1596329. The
other one will come with OTA-13. Until we know what the cause is though,
which many people have been trying to identify, it'll be very difficult
to make sure that it's fixed. I appreciate your patience as we try and
figure this out though.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544477] Re: No sound notification for new SMS (Ubuntu Touch)

2016-08-18 Thread Jim Hodapp
@Michal: can you reproduce it reliably? What were you doing when you
noticed it wasn't working? Are Telegram notifications working for you
right now? How about alarms in the clock app? Can you play music from
the music-app?

It's possible that a fix that I landed in OTA-12 that took care of a
nasty thread deadlock issue took care of this issue, or at least once
trigger of it.

A handy feature of music players is the ability to quickly skip tracks
by long-pressing the volume buttons. This allows users to control
their music without having to take the device out of their pocket,
turn its screen on, unlock it, go to the music app and press "Next".

As of now, when I long press the volume button, it rapidly increases
the volume, which is not very nice to my ears ;-)

Is it possible to control the music app this way on Ubuntu phone?

  Device: Meizu MX 4
  System info: Ubuntu 15.04 (r4)

I've experienced this strange issue 4-5 times after OTA-12. It seems pretty
random and is hard to reproduce.
When I get an incoming call, the screen turns on, the incoming call pop up
appears, but there is no sound at all even though the phone is not in silent
mode (and also the speaker volume is not set too low). I can accept this call
and keep conversing as usual.
Once I asked the same caller to call me once again after a few minutes, that
time the phone rang as expected.

  Device: E5, OTA-12, stable channel

I can provide necessary logs if this happens again. Which ones should
  I gather?

didn't seem like media-hub as I was still able to play music and do
other things with media-hub. My theory is still that the volume for the
particular audio role is getting set to a very low volume.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1597755] Re: No ringtone or message tone in headphones in silent mode

2016-07-01 Thread Jim Hodapp
@marcustomlinson: thanks for the reply. I wanted to make sure that was
intentional in the UX design. I could also think of situations where you
have your headphones on and you wouldn't want the ringtone to come
through the main speaker so as to not disturb the public around you
(assuming you would not answer the call and start talking because then
that would be a moot point).

Confirmed this, I am also seeing this issue. Is it normal to have the
ringtone go through the main speaker and the headphones as well when not
on silent mode?

@Anupam: can you try doing the top portion of comment #5 where you try
and turn up the volume. Like Pat said this can be tricky, but see if
you're able to do that. This will help confirm if it's indeed a volume
issue or some other PulseAudio configuration issue.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1544477] Re: No sound notification for new SMS (Ubuntu Touch)

2016-06-07 Thread Jim Hodapp
Seems to me like that audio role's volume is getting set to 0%. If I
remember right, SMS alerts and the screenshot sound both use the same
audio role. One way to check this is to watch the media-hub log from a
shell by doing "tail -f /home/phablet/.cache/upstart/media-hub.log"
You'll be looking for a line that details the audio role and match the
filename to the one you're expecting (SMS being one, screenshot sound
being another). If you then validate that they're listed as the same
roles that will be a first step. Next step would be to try other things
that might be the same role type and verify again in the media-hub.log
that they are the same role. Lastly, begin to verify that only this
audio role type sounds are the ones that aren't playing.

If you remove the headphones while music is playing, the sound comes
out of the loudspeakers for about 0.5 seconds before stopping.

  Steps to reproduce it:

  1] Connect headphones
2] Start playing any track from the Music app
3] Make sure volume is 100% so you can hear it easily
4] Listen to the phone speaker and disconnect headphones, right after
disconnecting you should hear a sound on the speaker which is a bug.

2016-02-22 Thread Jim Hodapp
Anupam: I don't see anything wrong from the media-hub.log, at least with
this portion of the media stack. I'm thinking it may be an issue with
pulseaudio but this bug will require deeper investigation to really know
for sure. Anupam, which of the .ogg files listed in your media-hub.log
do you currently have set for playing for SMS notifications?

Geoff: Can you please attach your media-hub.log file right after this
occurs for you as well? I'd like to double check.

  Hi there! o/

After using this app since two days, i really like it. Some other bugs
i had have already been mentioned.

At the moment, i am having problems listening to music through my
  headphones:

The volume is not loud enough for older tracks. I am talking about
albums from the 70s/60s/80s, which were not effected by the "loudness
war". Nowadays, the albums are mixed pretty loud, screw dynamic! :D

However, it would be nice to have a menu option to activate/deactivate
the volume limits. Maybe it can be included into the equalizer, which
might be inplented some day in the app?

  Thank you in advance!

  Cheers,
  Kurisu

The Qt 5.5 packages at https://launchpad.net/~ci-train-ppa-

of QML Playlist and Audio Role patches that went in to Qt 5.6.

There are some differences in the Audio Role patch compared to the
version on vivid-overlay PPA that requires changes.

Qt 5.5 targets landing soon after xenial opens.

  For reference,
  Old API:

Patch some components to work with both old API & Qt 5.4 + new API &

  Unity 8 at runtime.

Pulseaudio and media-hub would land only to xenial, switching to the
new API as part of the Qt 5.5 silo.

Clock and dropping-letters drop the audio role usage as it's not
supposed to be used in those.

Bug description:
This might be a Media Hub bug - I'm not sure.

  Steps to reproduce:

  1. Start playing a podcast.
  2. Switch to a different app.
  3. Lock the screen.
  4. Wait for the Podcast to finish.
  5. Wait a bit longer.

  Expected results:

  No noise from speaker.

  Actual results:

Soft white noise from speaker. It seems that some part of the audio
subsystem is still switched on. I am concerned that this could be
  draining battery.

  Workaround:

After the Podcast finishes, unlock the phone and switch back to the
Podbird app. This causes the noise to stop.

  Comments:

I noticed the same soft white noise continues a second or two after
the phone plays any sound from any app, but then turns off. I presume
there is some time out turning off some part of the audio subsystem.
Presumably if there is a reason, it should happen even when the app
causing the sound to play is not active.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1224756] Re: Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store

2015-03-10 Thread Jim Hodapp
I would go one step further with the proposed indicator method of
letting the user know when an app is recording audio. I would have the
indicator-sound icon change to an image of a microphone (or even pop up
a new icon) and set the color as red. This would be much more self-
evident that recording is taking place than just a red speaker (the
first thing that I would think if I saw that without knowing what it
meant was that something was broken with my audio).

Title:
  Pulseaudio should integrate with trust-store

Status in the base for Ubuntu mobile products:
  Confirmed
Status in pulseaudio package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
Currently the 'audio' policy group allows access to pulseaudio which
allows apps to use the microphone and eavesdrop on the user.
Pulseaudio needs to be modified to use trust-store, like location-
service does. Integrating with trust-store means that when an app
tries use the microphone via pulseaudio, pulseaudio will contact
trust-store, the trust-store will prompt the user ("Foo wants to use
the microphone. Is this ok? Yes|No"), optionally cache the result and
return the result to pulseaudio. In this manner the user is given a
contextual prompt at the time of access by the app. Using caching this
decision can be remembered the next time. If caching is used, there
should be a method to change the decision in settings.

Targeting to T-Series for now, since the trust-store is not in a
  reusable form yet.

  Original description:
David and the security team (inspired by an observation from Rick) discussed
that when recording, pulseaudio should somehow unobtrusively show the user that
it is recording. The easiest thing to do would be for pulseaudio to alert
indicator-sound which would then turn its icon red (similar to
indicator-message turning blue with new messages). Marking 'high' because apps
with access to pulseaudio can currently eavedrop on users. If the app is
allowed to do networking (the default for apps), then it can ship that
information off to a server somewhere.

Note 1, the alert to indicator-sound must happen via the out of
process pulseaudio server and not the confined app itself to be
  effective.

Note 2, we should consider how to enforce this for foreground apps
only. Application lifecycle should probably handle this for 13.10
(apps are suspended if not in foreground or if the screensaver is on),
but we don't want an app on the converged device to record in the
background when the user isn't paying attention. Example eavesdropping
attack: start recording only when the screensaver is on (perhaps
inhibiting the screensaver during recording would be enough).

I noticed that when playing audio via the speaker/headphones the CPU
usage is higher than when playing via a paired bluetooth speaker.

  Speaker CPU usage:
  Format pulse media-hub
  m4a 30 20
  flac 30 15

  Bluetooth Speaker CPU usage:

It has been suggested that changing the buffer size may resolve this

Under Unity if you press the alt key the global menu becomes focused
and you can select menu items via alt+f (File), alt+e (Edit) and so
on. This works with all applications, except when the desktop is
focused. For consistency reasons and keyboard navigation nautilus
desktop too needs an alt-key navigateable menu.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 97253] Re: On reconnects, xchat's net-monitor plugin doesn't reuse SSL, the port number or server password

2012-09-20 Thread Jim Hodapp
This still happens for me on Quantal, beta 2 with xchat-gnome 0.3.0. It
only happens with servers that are configured to use SSL. Ones like
freenode reconnect just fine. I usually run into this when my laptop
wakes from sleep.

Bug description:

I have feisty's xchat configured with a server (the canonical server)
on a non-default port number and using ssl, and set to autoconnect at
startup. When I start xchat it connects successfully. However, if
the connection drops, it tries to reconnect on the default port
  number, not the configured port.
