[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1702071] Re: Search spins forever, returns no results.

2022-01-18 Thread John Leach
this is happened for me on 21.10 and I just upgraded to the development
release of 22.04 and it was still happening.

version 41.2-1

the spinner would just sit there spinning on a search.

strace of gnome-software showed it doing nothing really.

I sent a TERM signal to the gnome-software process and restarted it, and
search is working fine now

nothing seems very relevant in the systemd journal:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1730728] Re: gnome-shell crashes randomly, error in libgobject-2.0.so.0.5400.1

2017-11-13 Thread John Leach
I have this same crashing problem, several times a day. Started about a
week ago.

I also have the same problem trying to report it. I have /var/crash
/_usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.crash which is 65M. When I try report it
using either appport-bug or apport-cli, those commands just exit
silently (apport-bug prompts me if I want to report a bug report first
and then does so). They create a 0 byte _usr_bin_gnome-shell.1000.upload
file.

So I'm having trouble reporting it too.

For the record I've tried disabling all extensions, but that hasn't
helped.

Same for me under saucy with 3.0.1-1ubuntu6~saucy1 - importing process
scans files for a bit and then crashes.

  I'm running the following command to play an mp3 file over a samba

  gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2

  it starts to play, but after about 1 second the audio goes silent, but
  the command doesn't finish. Playing the same file in rhythmbox does
  the same thing and the progress indicator keeps moving, suggesting
  playing but is just silent.

  If play the same file from the same server but via ssh or sftp, it
  plays fine:

  gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2
  uri=ssh://lion/media/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -

  If I manually build a chain of sinks using giosrc directly, rather
  than using playbin2, it plays ok:

  gst-launch-0.10 giosrc
  location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -
  Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

  If I play a flac file from the same server (using playbin2 again), it
  also plays fine (yes, you heard right, hehe!):

  gst-launch-0.10 playbin2 uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Admiral
  Fallow/Boots Met My Face/Admiral Fallow - Boots Met My Face - 01 Dead

  I've attached logs with GST_DEBUG=*:5 for all the above commands. They
  all succeed except mp3 over smb.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
I've done some more digging. Using the gstreamer debugging options, I've
at least identified a difference between totem and rhythmbox here.

I can see totem somehow translates the smb:// url to the fuse mount path
and just uses the filesrc gstreamer source element to read the file (and
can successfully play it):

0:00:00.722405619  2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:374:gst_file_src_set_location: filename : /home/john/.gvfs/music
on lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy - Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3
0:00:00.722418749  2515 0x7ffd6bfd3730 INFO filesrc
gstfilesrc.c:375:gst_file_src_set_location: uri  :
file:///home/john/.gvfs/music%20on%20lion/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

rhythmbox doesn't use the fuse mount - instead using the gio_src gstreamer
source element. It appears to be continue reading it fine, though as explained
above the output goes silent after about 1 or 2 seconds.

0:00:01.292036091  2468   0xf8c8d0 DEBUGgio_src
gstgiosrc.c:335:gst_gio_src_get_stream:source opened location
smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy%20-%20Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

But I can have gstreamer play the file successfully using giosrc using
gst-launch:

gst-launch-0.10 giosrc location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy
- Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

I've attached debug logs of my gst-launch and the rhythmbox commands
attempting to play the same file - using the options
GST_DEBUG_NO_COLOR=1
GST_DEBUG=gio_src:5,gio_base_src:5,basesrc:5,gnomevfs:5,filesrc:5

There are some differences between the two, but I'm not sure what is
relevant. In particularly, one appears to be in push mode and one pull.
They both read the file in 4k chunks, but rhythmbox does it from a weird
initial offset for some reason (perhaps due to it reading metadata info
though). Nothing obviously conclusive to me though.

  Fallow/Boots Met My Face/Admiral Fallow - Boots Met My Face - 01 Dead

  I've attached logs with GST_DEBUG=*:5 for all the above commands. They
  all succeed except mp3 over smb.

  I'm using gstreamer0.10-plugins-base 0.10.36-1 on Precise.

  This started out as bug #977866 reported against rhythmbox, but I've
  found that it's a gstreamer (or gvfs?) problem, so am resubmitting
  here with a clearer report.

  fails to play mp3s from a samba share using gio

Status in “gstreamer0.10” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  I'm running the following command to play an mp3 file over a samba
  share:

  gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2
  uri=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy - Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

  it starts to play, but after about 1 second the audio goes silent, but
  the command doesn't finish. Playing the same file in rhythmbox does
  the same thing and the progress indicator keeps moving, suggesting
  playing but is just silent.

  If play the same file from the same server but via ssh or sftp, it
  plays fine:

  gst-launch-0.10 -v playbin2
  uri=ssh://lion/media/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -
  Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3

  If I manually build a chain of sinks using giosrc directly, rather
  than using playbin2, it plays ok:

  gst-launch-0.10 giosrc
  location=smb://lion/music/Music/Therapy/Therapy -
  Nurse/Teethgrinder.mp3 ! flump3dec ! autoaudiosink

  If I play a flac file from the same server (using playbin2 again), it
  also plays fine (yes, you heard right, hehe!):

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-07-12 Thread John Leach
I've pared this down to a gstreamer bug and have opened a new ticket in
the gstreamer project:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/gstreamer0.10/+bug/1024117

It has some simple ways to reproduce the problem using gst-launcher -
could someone please test my findings there please, and mark the bug
confirmed.

Seems to be working fine here now on latest official version of Precise.
Same version of rhythymbox as before, though there have been many other
updates. Can someone else confirm this is now fixed for them too and
this can probably be closed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-05-02 Thread John Leach
Further investigation reveals that Rhythmbox can play flacs via a samba
share but not mp3s (sounds crazy, but I've triple checked!)

Totem can play both only if the ~/.gvfs fuse filesystem is mounted.
Today, the gvfs-fuse-daemon process had crashed (or otherwise stopped
for some reason) and totem was having the same problem as rhythmbox
(playing the first second or two of mp3s). When I remounted .gvfs totem
was able to play mp3s (though rhythmbox still could not).

So this is not fixed, but there are some more hints about the problem
there and this bug is beyond just rhythmbox.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 977866] Re: no sound while playing music from a gvfs mounted samba share

2012-04-13 Thread John Leach
Same problem here, playing a track from the local filesystem is fine but
when playing the same track from an samba share, it plays for maybe 1
second and then silence (though the progress bar keep moving as if it is
still playing).

Totem can play the same file from the same samba share with no problems.
