[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2083299] [NEW] Ubuntu 24.04: Occasionally screen stays black while booting

2024-09-30 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Unfortunately the screen stays black before password prompt shows up.
This happens since I've migrated from 22.04 to 24.04.
Even a fresh install shows the same symptoms.

What helps is to detach the HDMI cable, attach it again and the TV shows
the password prompt for luks.

I did not try yet the removal of "splash" in the parameters. As this was
indicated by others who faced the same issue.

my fedora computer has pkexec version 121 which has the --keep-cwd

option too.

Bug description:
When running multiple commands like this:

  SUDO_ASKPASS=/usr/lib/openssh/gnome-ssh-askpass sudo -A cp ./ez_bkup
/usr/local/bin/

from my gtk4 app, the ssh-askpass-gnome dialog and the gnome
inhibitShortcutsDialog pops up. i click allow on the
inhibitShortcutsDialog, then enter my password, which is accepted,
then they both pop up again for each of these sudo commands my app
  calls.

This happens in ubuntu 22.04-23.04 (completely updated) using gnome.
If i use xfce in the same ubuntu versions, the gnome dialog doesn't
pop up, of course, and ssh-askpass-gnome works properly (one entry and
then all commands executed without further prompting). Fedora 37 works
properly with gnome x11 or wayland, and xfce. Not sure if this is a
  bug in ubuntu's ssh-askpass-gnome, gnome-shell, or both/something

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 2026307] Re: ssh-askpass-gnome pops up for every sudo command

2023-07-07 Thread john doe
i didn't see your comment and i just changed the project to gnome-shell
instead of openssh b/c it does the exact same thing when using seahorse
as ssh-askpass provider instead of ssh-askpass-gnome. But i guess
seahorse needs a desktop file too. :) thanks for the info and the
workaround. will change back to openssh.

So will ubuntu get updates that add a desktop file for this package
then? Should i open another issue for seahorse?

This happens in ubuntu 22.04-23.04 (completely updated) using gnome.
If i use xfce in the same ubuntu versions, the gnome dialog doesn't

Thanks to Alkis Georgopoulos @alkisg for the hint, `Exec=nm-applet

It also breaks games from Steam in full-screen mode. For example,
Counter-Strike 1.6 fullscreen window become minimized after layout
change. Ridiculous.

Bug description:
When pressing any global keyboard shourtcut (configurable via System
settings -> Keyboard -> Shortcuts; i.e. for switching keyboard layout,
volume up/down), focus temporary switches from active text input to
something else, then restores back shortly. Maybe even active window
loses focus, but window frame does not shows this (window header
  remains to look active).

For example: when I press ctrl+shift here to switch keyboard layout,
when writing this description, yellow frame disappears from text input
box, text caret disappears too; they appear again when releasing
ctrl+shift. The same occurs in all other programs, i.e. terminal.

It causes serious annoyance, for example in Twitter when losing focus
in Reply text box, reply rolls up and I have to click it again with
mouse and set caret to correct place each time I switch keyboard
  layouts.

Other key combinations, not only ctrl+shift, also cause this.

It is especially annoying when using keyboard layout switch shortcut
handled by the same subsystem (media-keys plugin):

  case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_KEY:
  case SWITCH_INPUT_SOURCE_BACKWARD_KEY:
  do_switch_input_source_action (manager, type);
  break;

(Original gnome-settings-daemon, from which unity-settings-daemon was
forked, does not use media-keys plugin to switch keyboard layout).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1755202] Re: Clone Mac Address Function On Default Wifi Setting Does Not Work (Ubuntu 17.10)

2018-03-14 Thread John Doe

  Feb 16 20:07:48 UTC 2018 x86_64 x86_64 x86_64 GNU/Linux.

Before Using Ubuntu 17.10, I was on fedora 26. I notice that there is
also (MAC Address Randomization issue). I can fixed it and can use
default mac address spoofing function from wifi setting -> Network
Profile Setting (*) -> Identity -> Cloned Address -> And Add mac address
  to spoof for particular network.

This Default mac address spoof function is very useful for me.

Clearly, I doesn't mean (MAC Address Randomization issue)
  https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/network-manager/+bug/1681513

Now I have a trouble with this feature (default mac spoffing). I can
connect Wifi-s with great signal easily without using cloned address
  function.

But when I added spoof address to setting, the wifi-s cannot be
connected. I tried two wifi-s from near me which can connect on fedora
  26. One is open type network and the other is WPA Enterprise network.

If this function doesn't work for anyone, this must be a bug.
If it is a bug, hope it will fix it next release.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 353356] Re: Gnome screensaver lock always reports "incorrect password"

2017-01-10 Thread John Doe
Observing same issue on Ubuntu 16.04 (after upgrading from 14.04 where
same problem was appearing).

I consider that this effect is also there if you lock the screen manually.
Same workaround works:

- (lock screen manually; re-login says "wrong password"
- try to login as another user with wrong password
- after error, switch back to your user
- now login works

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-screensaver

When inactive, the screensaver locks the workstation. When logging
back in, I enter my password. This always returns "incorrect
  password".

Workaround: hit "Switch User" log in as that same user with the denied
password, revealing the session that was logged out of.

I changed the password: "sudo passwd". No change in behavior.

The question: where is it drawing the password from if not from the
same place that the regular login derives it? And how can I fix this
  admittedly small but annoying problem?

As said is #104, I can now confirm after 2 days of usage that issues
(missing letters, etc.) have disappeared since I installed packages from

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1432194] Re: Graphics unstable on Ubuntu 14.04 and 14.10 using Intel HD Graphics 5500

2015-05-15 Thread John doe
@Timo: your last packages seems to work for me ! At least I have no issue since
the beginning o the day and after several reboots.
I will confirm in 1 or 2 days as the issue may still occurs after several
hours. Thank you very much to have spent time looking for the issue: it's so
much faster with SNA !

is thje problem present with xserver-xorg-video-intel

2015-05-07 Thread John doe
@timo: i'm confident that my bug is related to the one reported by seth in this
bug issue:
seth bug screenshot:

my bug screenshot: https://launchpadlibrarian.net/201749121/missing_letter_1.png

Of course it will not be the case if seth issue is fixed.

@seth: does the kernel 37.51 fix your issue ? if not, I think we may
keep open this bug report no?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-26 Thread John doe
It seems. I mark Bug #1432194 as duplicate as Chris told me it was the
same bug as the current one. As some people may have the same different
issue, what should I do? Create a new bug? De-depulicate #1432194 ?
Thanks.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-26 Thread John doe
Unfortunately, the proposed package don't fix my problem.

I install the proposed package :

dpkg -l | grep video-intel | grep ii$
ii xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-utopic
2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.3~trusty1 amd64X.Org X server
-- Intel i8xx, i9xx display driver

You can see the prb is still here in attachment. Important note: I have
Intel® HD Graphics 5500 announced as Broadwell GT2 by Ubuntu System
Information, not GT3.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-22 Thread John doe
*** dirty temp workaround for hurry people ***
If you want to use SNA on Ubuntu 14.04 with lts enablement stack while waiting
for the patched xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-utopic package, you may just
replace the following files with the same files coming from the
xserver-xorg-video-intel ([1] or [2]) package in trusty-proposed version (do it
in tty1 for example as you will replace in use driver! ):
/usr/lib/libI810XvMC.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/libIntelXvMC.so.1.0.0
/usr/lib/xorg/modules/drivers/intel_drv.so

Don't forget to remove any conf file you may have added to use XNA in
/etc/X11/xorg.conf.d/.

This is really dirty, I don't know what will happen when the official
package will come (don't forget to backup original files), but at least

As a workaround for utopic graphic stack users in trusty, I'm looking
for a good way to revert back to the stock trusty package to use the
proposed package, so if anybody try it, please share :)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1444436] Re: [BDW GT3] Backport fixes to unbreak X

2015-04-16 Thread John doe
@girisha: if you're OK to have last packages from proposed-updates you
may follow instructions on
https://wiki.ubuntu.com/Testing/EnableProposed to easily test the new
package.

In my case I just realize that I had previously upgraded to Utopic
graphics stack so my curent package is xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-
utopic (2:2.99.914-1~exp1ubuntu4.2~trusty1) and no more xserver-xorg-
video-intel (2:2.99.910-0ubuntu1.4).

If anybody with trusty original's graphic stack can test the new package
(ubuntu1.5) (maybe trying to force ut with dpkg, if you don't want to
enable all proposed-updates, but at your own risks).

Also if a new xserver-xorg-video-intel-lts-utopic proposed package is
release I will try it on my system as descrive above.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1319207] [NEW] Contextual menu keyboard button can create important display bugs in almost all ubuntu applications

2014-05-13 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Most applications handle a right click event, and react to that by providing a
contextual menu. They usually handle a second right click by making the menu
disappear.
Moreover, some keyboards provide a 'contextual menu' key, which acts as a right
click.
However, when you press this key a second time on many ubuntu applications
(unity, file manager, gedit, just to name of few, but it's probably an
underlying problem), the first contextual menu doesn't disappear, and instead a
new one appear, which has the very nasty side effect of filling the screen with
contextual menus if the key accidentally gets pressed too long - and sometimes
with no other solution than to quit the application to make them all disappear.

** Affects: unity (Ubuntu)
 Importance: Undecided
 Status: New

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1290539] Re: Nautilus turn off "show hiden files" does not work

2014-03-11 Thread John Doe
Yes it's specific for the first user which was created during the installation.
Tried it with a new account and it does not show up.
I tried to turn it off twice. First the usual way with ctrl+h and then with the
menue (down arrow) "show hidden files" and unchecked it. When I close and
restart nautilus hidden files are visibile again. Of course the entry in the
menue is also checked again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1290103] [NEW] 3x [pidgin] found when running pidgin but runs normal

2014-03-09 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Hello.

Just checked today the Processes with "ps x" and found that Pidgin
seems to have some issues which do not affect the usage of Pidgin in any
way.

I asked in the ircchannel #ubuntu+1 if anyone can confirm that behaviour and it
seems I'm not alone.

If you need anything else, please let me know.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1093342] [NEW] DMZ-White and DMZ-Balck pointer themese cause slowdowns and freezes on nouveau

2012-12-23 Thread John Doe
Public bug reported:

Using default pointer themes(DMZ-Black and DMZ-White) causes slowdowns
and freezes.

Fresh 12.10 install with all updates and gnome3.

Default pointer theme(i see it in gnome-tweak-tool) is 'DMZ-White'.
Using Unity I open '/usr/share/doc/account-plugin-google' directory and try to
switch between '/' and '/usr/share/doc/account-plugin-google' using nautilus
location bar. Switching takes about two or three seconds.
However once I change pointer theme from 'DMZ-White' to 'Handhelds' switching
becomes much faster.

Other example is search dialog in eclipse(C-h). When I switch to 'file
search' tab in eclipse with 'DMZ-White' pointer theme I can see white
pane before window content is redrawn. Problem goes away with any other
pointer theme.

Also I experience random short freezes in gnome3 + chromium. With
'Handhelds' pointer theme I have no freezes anymore. However I couldn't
find a stable way to reproduce this case.

This problem is much worse in gnome-shell:
In nautilus when I switch to another directory using 'DMZ-White' pointer theme
the content of the window is not rendered at all until I move mouse outside the
window.

I don't have this issue with nvidia-current driver installed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 723624] Re: apport-gpu-error-intel.py keep crashing after login

2012-12-15 Thread John John Doe
I run into the same problem since a while. I followed the advice of Brian
Murray and manually applied the patch to the file.
I have to mention that the script is not the same as the patch suggests.
Therefore I edited the following line: (see screenshot)

BEFORE: report['Lspci'] = command_output(['lspci', '-vvnn'])

AFTER: report['Lspci'] = root_command_output(['lspci', '-vvnn'])

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 868358] Re: Hibernate hotkey (fn + ...) triggers suspend to ram

2012-11-22 Thread John Doe
I noticed that pressing Fn+F4 (suspend) actually triggers hibernate,
while Fn+F12 triggers suspend. I have set all power-keys to hibernate as
hinted in #22.

Keycode for Fn+F12 is:

~ $ sudo /lib/udev/keymap -i input/event4
Press ESC to finish, or Control-C if this device is not your primary keyboard
scan code: 0x0B key code: suspend

while Fn+F4 is:

scan code: 0x03 key code: sleep

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
@ossjunkie: Didn't look at it before my previous comment as I hadn't
noticed it was there. It looks OK apart from the predictable location.
As you say, not a big adjustment to change that though.

# only apply when home directory is on NFS
if [ "$(stat -f -L -c %T $HOME)" = "nfs" ]; then
  # remove existing ~/.gvfs dir if empty
  rmdir ~/.gvfs
  if [ ! $? -eq 0 ]; then
# remove link or move unempty dir/file
if [ -h .gvfs ]; then
  rm ~/.gvfs
else
  mv ~/.gvfs ~/.gvfs_moved_for_gvfs-fuse_on_nfs
fi
  fi
  # create the symlink to unpredictably named directory with secure permissions
  ln -s "$(mktemp -d)" ~/.gvfs
fi

As well as creating an unpredictable location using mktemp also means
you don't need to worry about permissions since by default it creates
files/directories with read/write for owner only.

Title:
gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

Status in GVFS:
  New
Status in “gvfs” package in Ubuntu:
  Triaged

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gvfs

gvfsd usually start a gvfs-fuse-daemon for GVFS mounts, which fuse-
mounts to $HOME/.gvfs. This fails if the home directory resides on an
NFS share with root squashing enabled. Thus, users in a
corporate/networked environment with such NFS homes cannot use gvfs
effectively, since a lot of applications rely on the fuse mount.

For those unfamiliar with NFS, root squashing means the local UID 0 is
mapped to the anonymous/nobody UID on the remote system when it tries
to access the NFS share. Since home and subdirectories have
permissions 0700, $HOME/.gvfs cannot be accessed by root in this case.
This makes the mount() call of gvfs-fuse-daemon fail (verifiable with
  'strace gvfs-fuse-daemon /home/user/.gvfs').

There are two solutions to this:
  a) disable root squashing
  b) move the .gvfs directory somewhere else

  a) is not a good choice for security reasons. b) seems not to be
possible at the moment. I looked at the sources for the current
(jaunty and karmic) gvfs package and found

  mount->fuse_mountpoint = g_build_filename (g_get_home_dir(), ".gvfs",
  fs_name, NULL);

in daemon/mount.c. Even though gvfs-fuse-daemon can be called with any
path you like, it looks like the path which gfvsd uses for the call is
hard-coded. I was able to symlink /home/user/.gvfs to /tmp/.gvfs, and
this works. But I am not sure if that is a good solution.

I would like to ask the package maintainers to a) include a README.NFS
in the package which points out the problem and workaround (I can
write one if you like) and b) forward this bug upstream to the right
place, so the path with which gfvs-fuse-daemon gets called can be
  configured.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 435719] Re: gvfs-fuse fails to start on NFS mounted homes

2011-12-20 Thread John Doe
Timo's workaround is just what I was looking for. I wouldn't use
/tmp/.gvfs-$USER though since that's a predictable location. On a
machine where lots of people log in to it someone could maliciously pre-
create such directories for other users resulting in at best denial of
service and at worst them being able to access other people's files. I'd
use mktemp

rmdir ~/.gvfs 2>/dev/null || rm ~/.gvfs
ln -s "$(mktemp -d)" ~/.gvfs

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 509843] Re: nm-applet doesn't show Clear WiMAX network available

2011-12-04 Thread John Doe
Since the latest version of Network Manager states it supports WiMax,
there should be a user interface to assist users connecting to WiMax
networks.

** Changed in: network-manager-applet (Ubuntu)
   Status: Expired => Incomplete

--
You received this bug notification because you are a member of Desktop

Title:
nm-applet doesn't show Clear WiMAX network available

Status in “network-manager-applet” package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:

  2) network-manager-gnome 0.8~a~git.20091014t134532.4033e62-0ubuntu1

  3) My Expectations: I click on the nm-applet icon in the notification
area. Under WiMAX Link 5150, I would expect to see something like
"Clear" or "Clearwire". I would then click on it, NetworkManager would
connect to my Clear service, retrieve an IP address, and I'm free to
use the internet from anywhere. Both Windows XP and Moblin show Clear,
which I connect to no problemo. Unfortunately, those two particular
  OSes are horrible :-/

  4) Reality (for now): I click on the nm-applet icon. Under WiMAX Link
  5150, I see "Auto wmx0". I click on it, though I don't know why.
Unsurprisingly, it doesn't get me connected to my Clear service.

What I've learned so far: In both Windows and Moblin, by default, WiFi
is disabled and WiMAX is enabled. Clear is automatically detected. If
I try to enable WiFi, my WiMAX connection gets dropped and things get
wonky. I'm guessing that my Intel 5150 WiMAX/WiFi card is an either/or
situation, and that because Ubuntu is bringing up the WiFi side of the
card first, the WiMAX side fails. Maybe if I could switch the boot
order, WiMAX would work and WiFi would be broken?

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 641357] Re: Required method to remove rhythmbox from soundmenu does not exist or is not obvious enough

2011-11-05 Thread John Doe
In reply to #5:

Steps to reproduce:

1. Fire up the Live CD.
2. Install rhythmbox: $ sudo apt-get install rhythmbox
3. Start rhythmbox: $ rhythmbox
4. Realize there's no way to remove the integration with the Sound Menu.

Required method to remove rhythmbox from soundmenu does not exist or
  is not obvious enough

Status in “rhythmbox” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: rhythmbox

  From https://wiki.ubuntu.com/SoundMenu ...
"A compliant player should not insert itself into the menu merely because it
is installed, but should insert itself as soon as you start actively using it
(e.g. playing something with it for the first time, or adding music to its
library). The player’s own settings interface should also have a checkbox for
whether to integrate the player into the sound menu"

Rhythmbox 0.13.1 included in Ubuntu 10.10 does not comply.

Unfortunately, it doesn't work anymore. This feature has been removed by
GTK developers because of "this may surprise user" :

they are going to reimplement it.

Totem Movie Player can't scroll in certain mp3 files (the slider is
  disabled), e.g. http://chaosradio.ccc.de/media/tim/mm/mm071-sicheres-
durchstoebern.mp3 (VLC media player can scroll in this file without
any problems). Sometimes the problem can be solved by constantly
reopening the audio file until the slider gets enabled.

Other files always work fine, like
  http://meta.metaebene.me/media/raumzeit/rz023-rosat.mp3
