[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1310219] Re: Shutdown cannot be canceled

2020-05-18 Thread Jussi Lind
It seems that this bug was originally about Ubuntu 14.04.

I now tested that on Ubuntu 18.04 this works like it should. The
shutdown can be canceled and in addition there's an info text saying
that the machine will automatically shut down in 60 secs.

This bug can be closed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1870815] [NEW] My child was able to crash gdm

2020-04-04 Thread Jussi Lind
Public bug reported:

I let my 1-year-old child play with the login screen for ~5 minutes.
After hitting all kinds of keys (the sequence seemed to be very
complicated) we ended up with a black screen with mouse cursor only
slowly responding to mouse movement and lagging behind.

I couldn't do anything else but reset the PC.

First this seems to be funny, but then you realize how embarrassing it
is. It absolutely should not be possible to crash the login screen just
like that. How is that even possible? The login screen should just
either accept a password or reject it no matter what keys are being
pressed.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1193893] Re: Nautilus crashes/freezes when trying to open file while copy in progress

2019-01-24 Thread Jussi Lind
Not on Ubuntu 18.10.

However, there's another usability issue: there's no progress dialog.
This means that there's no obvious way to cancel the copy process. I can
see only progress indicator in the launcher.

Nautilus crashes/freezes when trying to open file while copy in
  progress

Status in nautilus package in Ubuntu:
  Incomplete

Bug description:
I run into this when copying several hundreds of photos from an SD
card to a server. The problem is fully reproducible.

I can reproduce the bug like this:
  1) Open a Nautilus window to view contents of an SD card (plugged into a USB
2.0 reader).
  2) Open another window to view destination folder on the server.
  3) Start to copy (drag'n'drop) photos from the SD card to the server as a one
big chunk so that the whole process will take several minutes to complete.
  4) Try to view a photo from the SD card while the copy is still in progress.

  What should happen:
  - The photo should open in the default image viewer.

  What happens instead:
  - Nothing happens. All Nautilus windows turn into grey and they don't respond
anymore. The progress indicator on the Launcher gets stuck.
  - Nautilus cannot be opened again. The computer has to be rebooted in order
to use Nautilus again.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1452096] Re: "Calibrate" in Systems Stettings -> Color disabled.

2017-10-14 Thread Jussi Lind
I'm not a Ubuntu developer. I just bumped into the disabled calibrate
button and came here via Google. I later realized that it was due to a
calibration device not being connected. I was expecting some manual
calibration instead and incorrectly confirmed this bug.

I believe that the calibration is supposed to be done with a colorimeter
and the button is grayed out because there's no colorimeters connected:

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1437700] [NEW] Active file selection is not removed on a new search result

2015-03-28 Thread Jussi Lind
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Search for a file so that exactly one file is found
2) Select the file
3) Copy it (Ctrl+C) and paste it to another folder
4) Search for a new file so that exactly one file is found, but don't clear the
file selection
5) Observe, that despite a new result, the file selection is still active

Now, confusing things will follow:

6) Copy the file as it's already selected and paste it the to same folder as
the previous file
7) Observe, that an overwrite confirmation dialog opens. The file selection was
pointing to the previous file despite the fact that the new file was
highlighted during copy.

What should happen:

- The file selection/highlight should be removed on a new search result
so that user has to explicitly select the new file.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078875] Re: Installing packages manually is slow

2015-01-15 Thread Jussi Lind
** Description changed:

Installing debian packages manually via Software Center is too slow.

  Steps to reproduce:
  1) Double-click a .deb package in Nautilus
  2) Wait for USC to open
  3) Click install when the package details is shown

  What should happen:
The actual install process (starting when user clicks the install button)
should be about
as fast as installing the package in the terminal with sudo dpkg -i [package].

  What happens instead:
On my machine USC is 4-5 times slower than plain dpkg. I used my own game as
a test application:
  dpkg -i: 4 secs
USC: 20 secs (time elapsed since the install button was clicked and password
given)

I repeated this several times with similar results.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1344990] [NEW] Volume control jumps back and forth

2014-07-19 Thread Jussi Lind
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:

1) Listen to music via Audacious
2) Open volume control from Unity's panel
3) Try to change the volume

What happens:

I believe this is regression as didn't notice anything weird in 13.10

Bug description:
Installing driver for Canon MP160 has worked perfectly from 12.04 to
13.04, but not anymore in 13.10. The USB printer get detected
correctly, but when installing the driver via New Printer dialog,
only gutenprint can be selected and the Installing driver gutenprint
dialog just gets stuck and nothing happens.

  [IMPACT]

High, as if locally unsupported printers cause a driver download from
OpenPrinting the download ends in an infinite loop and cannot be
cancelled due to a crashed user interaction thread, blocking system-
config-printer completely not allowing a manual setup of the printer.

  [TESTCASE]

In a terminal window run the commands

  cd /usr/share/system-config-printer/
  python newprinter.py --setup-printer=file:/tmp/printout
--devid='MFG:Canon;MDL:MP160;'

Accept to download the offered Gutenprint driver and enter your
password when you get asked for it. The download and installation of
the Gutenprint package from OpenPrinting will take place and right
after that, before closing the progress pop-up, system-config-printer
  will freeze.

In the terminal output of above commands you can see a crash of one
  thread:

With the proposed system-config-printer package neither the crash nor
the freeze will happen and both setting up the printer with the
package from OpenPrinting and canceling the OpenPrinting download and
after that setting up the printer manually will work.

  [Regression Potential]

None, as the patch is trivial

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1248303] Re: Regression: installing gutenprint printer driver fails

2014-01-04 Thread Jussi Lind
On the printer it reads simply MP160, but there's a separate Pixma logo,
so it must be Canon Pixma MP160.

And yes, I'm able to make the printer work if I configure it manually. I
only recently figured out that one actually CAN configure the printer
manually. It's a bit confusing since system-config-printer auto detects
MP160 so of course the user always selects that entry, resulting in this
bug :)

A clarification to my previous comment: clicking Cancel does nothing,
but in my case I can select also Gutenprint USB printer #2 instead of
Canon MP160, which triggers the manual configuring flow.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1248303] Re: Regression: installing gutenprint printer driver fails

2014-01-03 Thread Jussi Lind
I think that this is an (UI?) issue in system-config-printer, because I
was now able to install the driver like this:

1) Start system-config-printer from terminal (I didn't test otherwise)
2) Select your printer from the list once detected and start installing the
gutenprint driver
3) Hit CTRL-C (possible a couple of times) in the terminal when the installing
gutenprint dialog gets stuck, select Cancel for the crash report etc
4) Now a New Printer dialog opens in which you can select your printer
manufacturer and model
5) Choose your printer = Forward = Forward = Apply

The first crash again here:

-- clip --

Traceback (most recent call last):
  File /usr/share/system-config-printer/newprinter.py, line 3678, in
on_tvNPDownloadableDrivers_cursor_changed
iter = model.get_iter (path)

-- clip --

These are the corresponding lines in the code:

-- clip --

selection = widget.get_selection ()
if selection == None:
return

model, iter = selection.get_selected ()
if not iter:
path, column = widget.get_cursor()
iter = model.get_iter (path)

-- clip --

So in our case widget.get_cursor() returns so that path is None.

I assume that this happens, because the code expects user data from the
New Printer dialog, which is not opened.

system-config-printer seems to open the same configuration dialog with
similar results.

Now the progress bar of Installing driver gutenprint dialog gets stuck
in the halfway. I think that it happened also before. However, before
this phase I saw a system error about system-config-printer.py crashing:

The choose driver dialog has also some other problems, like enabled

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 992639] Re: Regression: Nokia CS-15 not working in 12.04

2013-10-28 Thread Jussi Lind
FYI: This trick made CS-17 work on my 13.10:

1) Set DisableSwitching=1 in /etc/usb_modeswitch.conf
2) Plug the device in and then execute eject /dev/sr1

(You might have different device path, mine was at /dev/sr1)

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1193893] Re: Nautilus crashes/freezes when trying to open file while copy in progress

2013-07-12 Thread Jussi Lind
This is really bad. Now I run into this when transferring photos from my
SGS2 via FTP. Trying to open an image from the phone while file copy is
still in progress trashes Nautilus and this time also the copy process
completely.

2013-01-02 Thread Jussi Lind
I started to suffer from this bug during this week. Last time I was
listening to music and suddenly the music started to loop the last 0.5-1
secs and everything else just froze. This has happened to only one of my
computers, running Ubuntu 12.04 64-bit and Intel hardware:

  Update: 6/12/2012
This bug is about a complete system lock-up. No other TTYs can be started.
Mouse doesn't move. Keyboard doesn't react. The only solution is hard reset.

Seems to happen on a variety of configurations, including nVidia, ATI
  and Intel graphics.

If you are still able to TTY or SSH into other sessions, move the
mouse or use the keyboard, file another bug.

  Thx. Joris V. (brains).

  Update: 5/21/2012
Updating the kernel to 3.3.6 as suggested by Michael in #91, the system seems
stable, no freezes yet in 5-6 hrs of using and watching videos for couple of
hrs.

  Original description:
I recently installed newly released ubuntu 12.04 LTS 64 bit version on my
desktop. And it is frequently freezing, for the first few hours it ran smoothly
and when I started watching videos it started freezing randomly.
I have to use hard restart every time.
Initially it was only during videos but now even during normal browsing it is
freezing.

I am using on board graphics and do not have any graphics card
  installed.

Can someone please help me here, I really love the new looks of 12.04
and it bugs me not being able to use :(

  Below is my hardware configuration:
Processor: Intel CORE i3 processor (2nd generation)
  Board: Intel® Desktop Board DH67BL
  Ram: 4GB
  Graphics: On board
  HDD: 500 GB

Please let me know if you need more information, or any specific logs
  I can capture (and how).

  Thanks,
  Ketan Patil

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1078883] [NEW] Application approval process via developer.ubuntu.com is too slow

2012-11-14 Thread Jussi Lind
Public bug reported:

Steps to reproduce:
1) Write an application
2) Try to get it included in the USC via developer.ubuntu.com

What should happen:
- The application should get approved or completely rejected within acceptable
period of time.

What happens:
- The application can be pending for months and nothing happens. I submitted my
app (fleetingpm) for almost a year ago.
I got one comment 9 months ago, fixed the problem and the application is still
pending. This is not acceptable.

I know that PPA's are cool and I'm happily using them. However, new
users necessarily don't understand the concept at all, they don't find
the software and PPA's are clumsy to install.

I'm not sure what's the point of developer.ubuntu.com if there are not
enough resources to run it.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 799465] Re: Calendar applet shows a different date from `date` command.

2012-05-02 Thread Jussi Lind
*** This bug is a duplicate of bug 793450 ***
https://bugs.launchpad.net/bugs/793450

I experience this bug sometimes when I leave my computer on over the
night. For the first time I open the calendar applet it still highlights
the previous day. Closing and opening the applet again updates the
highlight.

Calendar applet shows a different date from `date` command.

Status in “gnome-panel” package in Ubuntu:

Bug description:
  Binary package hint: gnome-panel

  I'm using Unity.

If I click on the clock, it shows yesterday's date above the calendar,
but highlight's today's date in the calendar grid. I've also seen it
  highlight the wrong date.

I can run date in a terminal and it shows the correct date. If I log
out and log back in, the calendar is now correct.

Generally, it looks like it's showing me the date of the last time I
looked at the calendar, but it might be the last time I logged in.
