Title:
gvfsd-sftp do not preserve file ownership on file modification
  operation

Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
  Problem overview:
When using gvfs-sftp connection to modify some remote files, editing remotely
(with gedit, sublime, etc) then saving these files changes their user and group
ownership on server.

  Problem configuration:
  - one desktop with Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS and Unity desktop
    (3.2.0-39-generic #62-Ubuntu SMP Thu Feb 28 00:28:53 UTC 2013 x86_64 x86_64
x86_64 GNU/Linux)
  - one server width Ubuntu 12.04.2 LTS server
    (3.5.0-25-generic #39~precise1-Ubuntu SMP Tue Feb 26 00:11:13 UTC 2013 i686
i686 i386 GNU/Linux)
  - one server directory with some files
    - directory permission : drwxrwx--- serverUser clientUser
    - files in this directory : -rw-rw serverUser clientUser
  (aka )

  Problem reproduction:
1- Use Nautilus (3.4.2) to "Connect to server ..." from your desktop pc to
your server pc using your ssh 'clientUser' credential (as mentioned above).
2- Browse to the above mentioned directory through Nautilus (from desktop
client in the remote served directory)
3- Open a remote file for edition with gedit (or any other desktop editor,
from nautilus or command line like gedit ~/.gvfs/...)
  4- Edit and save file
5- Check file permission on server directory
6- the file ownership has changed to something like -rw-rw clientUser
clientUser

Using vi (or vim) give an error at save time, but, the content is
save succefully, permission are set to something -rw--- clientUser
  clientUser

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 227808] Re: file permissions destroyed by vim/gvfs/fuse

Title:
  file permissions destroyed by vim/gvfs/fuse

Status in gvfs:
  New
Status in gvfs package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
This bug is a little difficult to explain, but I will do my best. I'm
using Ubuntu Hardy Heron with no third party repositories. Every
package is up to date as of this posting.

It goes like this. When I edit files with vim or gvim through
gvfs/fuse/sftp the file permissions on the real remote file system get
destroyed. Here is a procedure you can follow to duplicate this bug.
The only non-default package you need installed is vim or gvim.

1 - Open a terminal and ssh to a remote machine.
2 - In this terminal create a text file on the remote machine, and set the
permissions to 644.
3 - Go to the Places->Connect to Server... menu item, and create an SSH
connection to the remote machine.
4 - Double click the new sftp folder icon that appears on the desktop to open
nautilus.
5 - In nautilus browse to the directory containing the text file you just
created.
6 - Use the command ls -l in the ssh terminal to verify the permissions of
the file are still 644.
7 - In nautilus right-click on the text file, open it with "Text Editor"
(gedit)
8 - Make a change to the file in gedit and save it.
9 - Use the ls -l command in the terminal to verify that the permissions of
the file are still 644.
  10 - Exit gedit.
11 - In nautilus right-click on the text file and select the option to open
it with "GVim Text Editor"
12 - Make some changes to the file in GVim, and save those changes.
13 - Use the ls -l command in the terminal, and you will see that the
permissions of the file are now 600, not 644.

Some interesting things to note about this bug.

If you open the text editors from the command line, instead of through
  nautilus, the same problem happens.

  So opening gedit like this:
  gedit ~/.gvfs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/test.txt
  will not damage the permissions.

  However, opening vim like this:
  vim ~/.gvfs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/test.txt
  will damage the permissions.

Also, I notice that if you do this
  ls -l ~/.gfvs/sftp\ on\ remote/home/user/
the permissions of test.txt (and every other file) will appear to be 600 (700
for directories), regardless of the file permissions on the "real" remote file
system. If you attempt to chmod any files, it will result in a chmod of the
actual permissions on the remote file system, but it will not change the
permissions of the file in the local ~/.gvfs directory.

This has led me to conclude that this bug is a combination of two
things. First, using the chmod command on files through gvfs/fuse/sftp
does not work in an expected fashion. Secondly, gvim and vim appear to
be chmod-ing files when they write to those files.

I'm not sure this bug is an actual security risk. It seems it can only
result in file permissions becoming more strict, not more permissive.
However, I have checked the security box just to be safe. If file
permissions involved, there could always be an unseen security issue.
I can see a situation where an application losing the ability to read
a needed file causes system breakage, if not a security hole.

Title:
  file permissions destroyed by vim/gvfs/fuse

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1299604] Re: evolution keeps asking for password

2014-06-09 Thread LeadMan
Mikhail, that is... odd at least :)

Lately I found a workaround for Evo password issue, go to:
Edit>Preferences>Email Accounts>choose your EWS account>click Edit>Receive
Options> set "Check new email every ... minutes" to some short time.
I have changed it from default to two minutes, and that helped. Now Evolution
asks for password only once right after start :)

Please let others know if that helped you or is my case isolated lucky
shot?

few minutes it asks again and claims password is wrong - which is untrue - i
made sure of it. At the same time Evolution's entry disappears from gnome

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1314820] Re: locale date-time format not displayed in 14.04-nautilus

2014-05-14 Thread LeadMan
I totally agree with Greg. We really need ISO date-time format. It is
the only reasonable format!

Title:
locale date-time format not displayed in 14.04-nautilus

Status in “nautilus” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
ubuntu 14.04's version of Nautilus has omitted a critically important
feature for a File Manager to have: ISO date-time format.

In ubuntu 12.04's version of nautilus an ISO date-time setting was
offered in the Preferences Display tab ( dconf-editor setting existed
as well). MAKING MATTERS WORSE: 14.04 Nautilus does not even display
correct date-time format when the locale is set to one that defaults
to the international standard [e.g., System Settings > Language
Support > Regional Formats = English (Denmark)]

Ubuntu's file manager should display the international standard for
date-time format. At a minimum, it should be a setting
  option/preference that users can choose.

It is a bug to NOT have an ISO date-time format option in a File
  Manager.

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 1061195] Re: Can't create EWS or MAPI account

2014-05-13 Thread LeadMan
I confirm. I have also noticed that EWS account's entry is disappearing
from gnome keyring. This may be linked with repeated password prompts.

Title:
Can't create EWS or MAPI account

Status in “evolution-data-server” package in Ubuntu:
  Confirmed

Bug description:
Evolution appears unable to create an EW or MAPI account. All the
steps proceed normally, including fetching the URL (for EWS) or
authenticating (for MAPI). However, at the conclusion of account
creation process, no actual account appears in the list.

I've tried starting Evolution from the command line using various
DEBUG_ variables and there are no EWS- or MAPI-specific errors. So I'm
not exactly sure what to do next.

I am fairly certain the problem doesn't lie with my corporate Exchange
server, as web mail works fine and any other EWS-capable client (like
  the mail app in Android).

[Desktop-packages] [Bug 160311] Re: Resizing windows by grabbing window borders is difficult

2012-03-12 Thread LeadMan
I agree with Renbag. I use terminal windows without scroll bar all the
time. Thi is not a solution. The only reasonable solution is to restore
invisible grabbing area of size~5 pixels within all long window's
borders.

This should mostly be fixed for Natty and might get backported to
  earlier releases as well.

  *

  *Blueprint for Natty, Ubuntu 11.04:

  https://blueprints.edge.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+spec/packageselection-
  dx-n-resizing-windows

  Work items1 * Make sure the new resize grip fits in current applications;
doesn't interfere with anything. We should make some noise about this during
the Natty cycle so people keep their eyes open and file bugs.
2 * Invisible window resize area - around 3px invisible area to allow resize
on all sides.

  *

Working grip backported to gtk2 already available in ppa :
  https://launchpad.net/~bratsche/+archive/gtk

  *

  Workaround: Edit /usr/share/themes/Ambiance/metacity-1/metacity-
theme-1.xml. Set the following values in frame_geometry_normal as
  desired:

  Binary package hint: metacity

  - The issue has been an issue for users (especially of large) screens
for several releases- Trackpad users seem to be particularly impacted
by this- The issue appears to have been significantly aggravated in
Lucid by changing the border width from 3 pixels to 1 pixel

The window borders in metacity are far too thin to be used for
comfortable window resizing, and resize handles are not available in
all applications (or even most). In fact, of all the windows I have
open right now, not a single one of them has a resize handle. The
result is that I get a lot of "misses" when I try to drag a window
border, which usually results in my clicking on the wrong window
altogether. The best fix for this usability bug is to create an
"invisible" region around each non-maximized window about 4px thick
that can be used for resizing (in addition to the visible border). Or
perhaps there should be a border thickness option on the System >
Preferences > Windows dialog (although the default thickness should
still be increased considerably). Ideally all windows would also have
a resize handle but I realize that these have to be application
controlled (at least that seems to be the position of the metacity
  team).
